Reviews of Grimy Times Model Railways
Friendly and helpful staff who provide a fantastic services. The shops weathering service is the best I have ever used. They have different levels of "grime" they can add to your locos from shed clean all the way to heavily weathered. They can advise you about what is right for your loco and can use reference pictures if you want a specific look. All my locos are now subjected to Grimy Times weathering when I buy them.
A good little model shop from n to o can not fault very helpful 👌
Very friendly staff, give me advice for my first model truck!
Asked for a Hornby Class 153 to be Weathered, done in quick time and at a Very Good Price.
The work by Ste is outstanding! Very Recommended!
A great little shop. Not a huge amount of stock, but more than enough for most modellers, and they are very happy to order on your behalf. The guy behind the counter is very helpful and friendly. Well worth a visit, if only to look at the wonderful weathering done by "grimy times"
Friendly staff with knowledge. Pristine and weathered stock displayed, good range of second hand stock and the weathering service is second to none. The love's that I have had done are superb and done to the spec required. Thoroughly recommended. 5 stars all round!
Fantastic shop, fair prices, friendly and knowledgeable staff Steve was great he popped a DCC chip in the 37 I purchased and Alan I think his name was was also super friendly in making sure what I was buying was all okay would 100% recommend ☺️
One of the finest railway orientated model shops in the country run by Steve and Alan.
Always nice to pay a visit and be greeted with a mug of tea or coffee.
Steve's expertise is weathering locomotives and rolling stock, the results of which are second to none. Recommended !
I have used Steve at Grimy Times for my OO gauge models to be weathered and is absolutely fantastic!! Friendly and great communication, very reasonable prices.
Highly recommended 👍🏻
Had to go to Warrington for work today and Googled nearby model shops - as you do!
Just spent a thoroughly enjoyable hour in Grimy Times on Orford Lane. The shop is crammed with a fantastic selection of stock; brand new and second hand locos, rolling stock, buildings, scenery etc and there’s a good mix of OO/HO and N-gauge plus some nice O gauge items too.
Bought a few bits and pieces (obvs) and got some inspiration for the layouts. This is exactly what we wanted from a model shop. The owner was very friendly and helpful and we will certainly be visiting again in the near future.
Highly recommend this shop, well worth a trip!
Great service. Needed large amount of track and called to discuss what I needed. Steve very helpful so I emailed track list and order was ready when needed He had included a track set as part of order so slightly cheaper than paying full price for each piece of track. Highly recommended
I have dealt with Steve at Grimy Times for over 7 years. The standard of work carried out on my locos has been excellent and I cannot thank him enough.
The detailing and weathering has passed my expectations and the cost has been fantastic. I would never use or trust anyone else to carry out the work on my locos, thank you for your excellent standard of work, price and service.
Excellent shop just how it should be for model rail enthusiasts. And friendly and understanding Alan being a model rail man him self is very helpful full of lots of advice .Steve the owner is busy in the back ground I think make new look old excellent job too.if your in the Warrington area well worth a visit you will not come out empty handed be it new or second hand .Keep up the good work guys
Fully recommend. I ventured in there for the first time, just over a month ago. They've got a great range and really well displayed. Steve and Alan were really knowlegable- Steve is an expert weatherer and Alan an amazing scratch modeller of buildings- they both have great knowledge of model railways in general.
It brings me on to why I wanted to write this review: After chatting to Steve, he said that one of his specialities is weathering. So soon enough, I brought in my new Hornby 87 with full 9 coach rake plus brake van. Absolutely fantastic! It surpassed my high expectations and really does make the whole train look so incredibly realistic. What I thought especially insightful, was the differing grades of weathering used on the loco (med to heavy), the brake van (also med to heavy), and the mark 3 coaches (med to light)- which would have been the realistic condition of the said loco/coaches.
Anyhow, I strongly recommend any fellow modellers to pay them a visit. The shop has a great range, display, with two experts in Steve and Alan at the helm.
Not a big shop but there is definitely a wide range of stock, bought an early hornby class 35 and it runs beautifully, the staff there were very helpful and were willing to order in stock for you if it wasnt in, definitely recommend.
Good prices extremely knowledgeable and helpful staff good old fashioned service a pleasure to recommend this business
Went to the shop today for the new LMS brake van, and came home with a nice kit built loco as well. Great shop plenty of good quality stock with helpful asvise.

I’m new to model railways and not sure what I was/am doing well these guys are brilliant. Very helpful advice and suggestions. I live local so Steve even offered to do the electrics for my track. Can’t thank these guys enough for getting me started.
I recently had a dozen loco's weathered to various degrees and some re-named/numbered by grimy times, and what an excellent job they did. If you want a fast, friendly, superb and extremely good value for money job done these are the boys for you.
Grimy Times have renumbered most of my Hornby and Bachmann locos - always a great job!!
A rare model shop, friendly, helpful and knowledgeable staff, well stocked and of course the base for Steve's excellent weathering operations which are very worthwhile and cost effective.
Absolutely perfect service with very helpful staff and perfectly maintained preowned and brand new stock
It maybe a small shop but a strong contender for hattons will definitely come again
This is a fantastic shop with two great blokes running it, nothing is to much trouble, at 58 years old I'm a complete novice when it comes to model railways but they sorted me out with a great starter set to get me up and running, I've been back a couple more times with my locos asking ridiculous questions but there knowledge experience and patience is vast..........not many places like this about nowadays so if your after great service and great choice make sure you come here !
Great selection of Styrene products well priced. Friendly and helpful staff too
Great little store
Excellent model shop with friendly staff and plenty of advice. Weathering service is superb.
my husband picked up his weathered class 40 s today ` he said they were so good he was back at springs branch in 1984 before he discovered girls that is which in the long run worked out to be far more expensive
Went in for some advice on my model railway and the people in there were very knowledgeable and gave me good advice
Excellent well stocked shop very knowledgeable staff picked up some great bargains well worth a visit
Very helpful,will definitely go back.
Great model railway shop. A real good knowledge and the weathering service is second to none.
Nice little local Model shop.. Friendly staff. Know what they are talking about..
Small shop but good amount of stock to choose from....
Sent my model in order to have some transfers fitted and some coal. Model came back as soon as work was completed and Steve was very understanding in the requests I made. It returned looking the part. Pricing is unbelievable and will definitely continue to be a customer at this shop. Highly recommend to anyone even from a far like myself.
A great shop run by helpful, friendly and knowledgeable model railway enthusiasts.

The best model railway shop for weathing.
I like this little store. I was in there a few times, but didn't bought anything. Finally, on the 10th of July I walked in searched for a bit and I found a Class 66 in DB livery with TTS decoder. It was a bargain. They showed me all the sounds and how it runs. I really like they weathering workshop. Friendly people and you can have a good chat and laugh with them. Recommended store for Trainiacs :)
Lovely place easy to get to
Good advice (had a problem)
I love this shop!
simply great blokes
Great shop
Fantastic staff
Great place
Amazing experience, can't wait to get back there. Very helpful staff, with expert knowledge. My son loved the place, which means I love it too.
Did a fantastic job renumbering, changing crest and weathering my Dapol B4. I'd had a couple of locos renumbered and weathered elsewhere before I was told about Steve at Grimy Times and there really is no comparison. Steve's attention to detail means that the result is at a completely different level to the others. Brilliant job and a very happy customer!!
Have started coming to Grimy Times as it’s my nearest model railway shop in Warrington. Customer service is excellent. Great for advice. Went in on Friday with my 4 year old son who is just starting to get interested in the hobby who loved the shop was also able to have an old engine of my dads repaired as well. Well definitely return. 👍👍
Really pleased I visited Grimy Times after a very disappointing trip to Hatton's. I came away with 2 Pullman Brake Cars (brand new) saved £5 on Hatton's price and some second hand buildings also at a great price. Grimy Times have a good selection of pre-owned items, which you can actually see and feel, unlike the rather empty and basic shop that is Hatton's. Really chuffed I found them on google maps. Will definitely visit again when I'm up north. Thank you.
Steve's weathering service is second to none, he spends time to understand what finish you require and goes on to produce exactly what you wanted
