Reviews of The Hairy Fig

We popped in for our lunch, great homemade food and really friendy staff. Shop & deli next door also sells more of the same food you can choose from the menu. Will return before we go home for sure 😋

What a wonderful experience. The two tall guys who are called ewan and will. They were wonderful, incredibly polite and helpful and helped us find exactly what we were looking for. They were very patient with my elderly aunt and I left feeling so happy. They just made my day. Would recommend to anyone who loves coffee or a wide range of balsamic a
A. P.
An amazing, varied platter for a very reasonable price, and they double checked our cheese preferences before assembling their presentation. Fentiman's lovely range of offbeat soft drinks was a welcome addition, and my sole quibble was my inability to book a table by phone. Given the three table maximum indoor capacity, I was (unnecessarily) concerned we might not get in.

An excellent little deli with lots of interesting things on the shelves. The pie and peas were to die for

My absolute go to shop for treats. Fantastic products, quality, staff are so warm and welcoming. Here's my newly acquired coffee. My kitchen smells lovely. But you have everything from pies, cheese, pasta, jars, it's heaven
R. D.
Fantastic food, chatty friendly staff, and some amazing produce available, I can't recommend this highly enough.

Absolutely delicious warm goats cheese salad and the house tea was lovely - so much so that we bought a bag to enjoy at home. There is only room for about ten people but it's definitely worth a visit.
A. L.
Food and service were excellent, would not hesitate to re-visit when next in York.

We visited just after they opened in the morning during the weekend and the place was quickly full (they only have 3 tables inside - for 3, 2, and 2 people), so that is something that you maybe want to keep in mind before coming. We only had black coffee and their specialty tea, which both were great. I highly recommend their Japanese cherry green tea, it was very lovely. We are not sure about the food menu, but we saw they had some pastries available.
E. L.
Lots of interesting foodstuffs sold here between the two next door shops, one of which also contains a tea room.
Cheeses, locally based pies, sauces, ingredients, chocolates, sweets, licorice, oils, drinks, you name it and they have it!
All in all just a really lovely deli.

Dimly lit, quirky setting. Table for 3, 2 and 2 inside, similar outside. Good drinks menu, no alternative milks. Food menu good, though few vegetarian options. The main vegetarian option (Mediterranean Vegetable and Feta Roll was out of stock). Service pretty standoffish. On another day, might be brilliant. Today, unfortunately, just ok.

Really pleased to stumble across this deli. Was enticed by the smell of delicious fresh food and was not disappointed. Picked up a pie, sausage roll and some cheeses, all of which are excellent. The staff were very friendly and pleasant to talk to as well.
A. B.
Great little shop and deli and great little restaurant as well. The smell alone is fantastic. Was so tempted to call in. But as I was on the job I had to remain professional. Will definitely go in next time I'm in the area.

Had the soup of the day which was beetrot and horseradish. Deliciously creamy and tasty. Many exciting things on the menu! Great selection of speciality teas.
W. R.
Small shop with amazing selection of cheeses, pies, pasties, and lots of other beautiful things.

Managed to escape the chaos of the Christmas markets for lunch. Enjoyed a yummy chicken pie which was just the perfect amount for lunch. Friendly service and plenty of bits and pieces to treat yourself to in the deli!
S. J. H.
Stumbled upon this, and bought loads of cheese and loads of tea. All delicious. Lad on Sunday 8th Aug recommended the most beautiful creamy blue cheese and it was so yummy. And the dark chocolate covered orange peel! What a treat. Really lovely shop, will be back for the gins as well!

Wow what a find. We wanted to go local and not a chain for lunch.
We saw the hairy fig and was pleasantly surprised food excellent We shared a platter as more than enough for 2 people. My friend Is vegetarian and had a great choice of food which makes a change.
The spannish hot chocolate is a must.
It is so reasonable friendly querky fun a real gem.
Will definitely be going again as nothing was too much trouble.

This place has an excellent range of goods, from aged balsmatics, to rare chocolates and cheeses. It's slightly on the expensive side, but you can find things that are impossible to get elsewhere.
R. F.
Went to The Hairy Fig where my partner bought licorice and I bought some tea. Then we decided to get some afternoon cheese and the waitress, Alison, expertly curated a hand crafted cheese board for us and it was absolutely delicious. Will certainly be back.
R. H.
Lovely, quaint, quirky, little deli and cafe.
G. B.
Call in to see what food they had. The owners said yes we will sort something. Out came a beautiful platter of cheese and meats and a lovely bottle of wine. Absolutely amazing. Highly recommended. Will definitely be back when visiting.

My only experience of this place is buying cold cooked snacks, such as pies and pasties, to take away. Every time the quality has been excellent: well-cooked and full of taste. I've never had even a mediocre experience of their products. The pasties, in particular, are definitely the best York has to offer. Also, don't miss the Chicken and Ham pie: superb.

This is our must visit place for a cuppa on every visit to York. Plus their pies/quiches are fantastic. The indoor tea room is closed due to COVID. Outside seating on pavement is great as you can people too
M. T.
A MUST VISIT LOCATION... Whether a visitor to York or resident, the hairy fig is a must for buying local and quality produce. Staff are knowledgeable, helpful and very friendly. The goods baked on site are also amazing, with the Yorkshire Pasty being a personal fave.
M. I.
A lovely meal had for my boyfriend and I, nothing was too much trouble even though we kept them open late. We left having dined, had a bottle of wine and with a bag full of products. Will be back if we visit York again
M. P.
We just had to try the homemade quiches from here after accidentally catching a heavenly whiff coming from the side door of the kitchen. The pastries are a cut above any others we've ever eaten in York and many of the other products on sale are locally sourced. Owner Julie and all the staff are a delight to deal with, making this deli a must visit when in York. Highly recommended.
M. L.
We called in after a few hours shopping. Super spot for people watching, decent coffee and cake plus we bought some nougat which was a bit overpriced but hey ho. The lady who served us was lovely so overall well worth a visit.
S. R.
Amazing cafe, very good value and great quality. Staff were very helpful and friendly. Great selection of things to buy in the shop also.
M.
Perfect place to grab a bite or have some tea. Everything was beautiful!
A. C.
Very helpful staff and delicious treats. We popped in for tea and cakes and had a good selection to choose from. The front of the shop has a great variety of balsamic products and the reasonable priced too. Definitely recommend and will be visiting again.
E. R.
A tiny trove of culinary delights, with simply the best pies and sausage rolls. The staff are always incredibly helpful - the lady in charge saw my face when the customer before me bought the last pie, so went next door to the cafe to squirrel up the last ones in there. Very kind.
J. G.
What a gem! This place is one of my new favourites! Great cafe with cosy, homely feel. The pie, peas and gravy was absolutely delicious. Staff are super friendly and I cant wait to come back and try more of the menu.
C. B.
Beautiful products, some very unique. I sent a hamper to my family in York (I live abroad). Their team made it super easy to coordinate and were very accommodating to my needs. Would highly recommend!
Z. R.
The food is excellent, I had the sausage roll with chutney and it was just to die for, the coffee was also excellent, the staff were really friendly and I’d highly recommend if your in the area.
C.
So many delicious things to browse! Friendly, helpful staff 😊
S. B.
A tiny place... A shop to the right which sell all kinds of peculiar food things you'll never find in any supermarket. And good quality too!
To the left, also a shop. A little more spacious with a café. A relaxed and warm place. Which should be enough to go for. And if that isn't enough... then go because of the name. The Hairy Fig is an awesome name.

We felt coerced to buy something, it was very embarrassing..
Me, my husband and dad went to one of the stores looking for a York chocolate. The owner was very lovely and asked where we were going. When we said we were going to Winchester, he said “That’s far, I can make a bag with something for you to eat on the way”. We refused at first because we were going to eat in a restaurant, but he insisted in opening the other store to give us something that he said they sell only fresh made during the day. Only after he was behind the counter he said he wasn’t giving us anything, but selling it. It was very embarrassing because we were just looking for chocolate and we accepted it because we thought he was being very nice and kind. We ended up buying three pies even though we were going to eat after that.
If he had said he wanted to sell it we would have said we were going to a restaurant, but he insisted as if he was going to give us a gift.
The pies were very delicious, but as I said, it was an embarrassing situation for us.
P. B.
I love this shop, cafe and delli. If you like liquorice there's a good selection and all different flavoured Balsamic vinegars x Fab shop on.Foss gate xx

j. F.
I took my friend who isn’t from the uk and I’m glad I did! She was able to experience a proper Yorkshire pie and peas, they do great loose leaf teas and beautiful cakes too.
J. w.
2 small shops one door apart. One acts as a cafe, the other as a small, very high quality deli. Beautiful breads and cheeses. Some rare sausages as well
J. F.
Smashing food staff really friendly and welcoming. Spotless restroom. Adhering to covid rules so felt safe.
T.
Love this place when vis but recent service poor
Tap water requested 3 times. Never materialised so went elsewhere to eat after my coffee. Shame really
S. S.
Great place. Don't go though, because then it will be too busy and I won't be able to get my lunch.

Absolutely 💯lovely. So sorry, due to paying by card I forgot to leave a tip. When I'm around will pop in again and definitely make up for the last time. So sorry 😞😢
S. Y.
A small but excellent deli and café where you can have unusual and interesting lunches. Staff are friendly and attentive. Highly recommended.

The café is really good, butit's the delhi that I love most. Their balsamics in particular are so delicious, and they have such a good selection of them. Lovely staff too
R. H.
I wish I actually knew some good recipes to use all the stuff they have in there. Everything in there looks really yummy, and tastes so too. I pop in to buy a few things, but usually the pre-cooked Mediterranean-pastry things, or some pork pies.
S. C.
Lovely independent with great stock and really friendly and knowledgeable staff. Local and specialist stock which is reasonably priced. Would definitely recommend
