This place had customers, but it wasn't nearly as packed as the 9 3/4 in London - that's good! It allowed for customers to shop! Unlike London, this place also had a HUGE variety of items to choose from! I'm afraid I might have to buy a larger suitcase or leave all of my clothes behind! The staff was friendly and helpful, the place was charming and whimsical, and I will be going back to make my purchases at the end of my stay. UPDATE: I returned to make my purchases. They let only so many people in, so the shopping experience wasn't too crowded. I was able to spend a lot of time in the store looking at everything. When I made my choices (which took over an hour), the staff went upstairs to get fresh versions of the merchandise I had chosen. I also spent a bit of money, so received a free bag (I think it was only 10p to buy one). It was still nice - I felt valued. If you are able, shop this store instead of King's Cross. I hate to say it, but King's Cross store was way too busy and overshopped with much less selection. Get to York, if you can.

This shop is amazing, we had to queue to get in for 20 minutes but it was worth the wait. The shop is an experience in itself with Harry Potter stuff seeing all the things from the books/films. Prices I think are reasonable for what you can get in there and none of the cheap rubbish you find online.

As someone who is not a Harry Potter fan, I really did not expect to find anything I would like in this shop. Honestly... I agreed to come in for my partner to be honest. We were met at the door by a friendly member of staff though who was extremely knowledgeable about the Harry Potter franchise... and has persuaded me to give the movies a shot! After having a walk around the shop I got a few gifts for friends as well as something for myself whilst my partner bought himself a wand. Honestly, this shop just had an amazing positive vibe and I seriously enjoyed my visit!

Quirky place in the most appropriate location and packed with all things magic and fun! We loved the handy place for parking one's broom, the latest collection of magic wands (because the old one need replacing!), the many many gift and souvenir options, the fun and helpful staff ..and the overall friendly atmosphere that can only lift all young and old witches off the ground.

Visited late last year on a whim while I was in the area for a wedding. Lengthy queue outside to get in, but worth the wait. I left with 1/4 of the shop (slight exaggeration) including items that were out if stock except for the ones hanging from the ceiling display (absolutely not an exaggeration): but the staff were exceptional and patient and offered to get them down if I really wanted to buy them (which I did, so thank you for going the extra mile). My friend is visiting York later this year and I've already recommended she visit this shop, and asked her to pick me up more merchandise, oops. No regrets.

This shop is itself a magic experience. In a tiny street of York city center you can get inside of a memorable harry potter land. Prices are not so low, but definitely worth if you are a fan and want to grab some exclusive items that you can't find anywhere else.

Once you are inside the store, shopping is a good experience with so few people allowed in and unobstructed views of the merchandise. Oh my word, what a place!! A must for any Harrry Potter fans. There is so much to choose from, at decent prices, and the staff are amazing. Huge thanks must go to Matt for his patience and help in choosing my wand. He knows his stuff, and was absolutely brilliant, even looking up my Pottermore wand to see who was the closest match. Pleased to say mine is unique, but it did make choosing one even harder. I could have emptied my bank account in here very easily. Love, love, love it and will no doubt be back before we go home.

What an utter EXPERIENCE! Visited yesterday with really high hopes and they were met, each and everyone of them. ALL staff are super knowledgeable and friendly, they can’t do enough for you! Yes the prices are high… you get what you pay for. High quality products/replicas. It’s a small independent shop, they’re not going to give there profits away are they?! First time we went in we bought 2 pin badges, all flavoured beans (not yet tried.. a little scared 😂) and also the Elder Wand… we left with massive smiles. We then went back to the shop before going home, to buy another wand😁. Harry’s wand this time, both wands were checked before the transaction took place, they took great care in handling them and made sure there was no damage to them. We will be back, with a bigger budget 😁. Thank you to everyone who works there.

This is a fun Harry Potter themed shop, there are a few HP shops here which ruin it slightly. All of the prices in all the shops are on par and wouldn't surprise me if they were owned by the same people as I saw the same staff working in different shops. I found it very expensive for items you can buy elsewhere much cheaper. I know the internet is killing off small shops but this one didn't help itself on the prices. A number of items were reasonably priced and we did purchase some items but we found ourselves looking online after going in the first day and if there was no difference in price we went back the next day to purchase. Some items like the plush Monster book of Monsters for just under £50, was ridiculous in price. £36 for a dressing gown similar to those in Primark for £10. Yes it's a fun shop and I do enjoy HP, so it is good to go and have a look as all the different items they have. I would imagine we would go back the next time we are in York as I have to HP mad kids and again, I imagine I will be put off by those prices, but definitely worth a visit.

Located on the Shambles and surrounded by a couple of other wizarding shops this stands out for it's dark window display adorned with death eater masks. Inside the shop you can get anything you can imagine from the J K Rowling inspired world. The staff are knowledgeable and friendly and help add to the magic. If you or your little ones are fans of the Harry Potter realm then this shop needs a visit. The staff are very friendly and also potter mad so will happily indulge in all things Potter! The shop is well laid out with a lot of novel items, souvenirs and collectables not often found in mainstream Potter stores. They also have a great range of wizards wands and really get the kids involved in picking one out. The shop is situated in the Shambles lanes so really fits the part and for those with good imagination, will feel like your in Yorks version of Diagon Alley But be warned!!!! Due to its size and popularity it can get Very Very Busy ... well worth it though.

The lady on the door was a Finnish student who asked us a few questions and had a nice chat while we waited in the fairly long queue to get in (covid restrictions). The man on the till was lovely and funny too. They accept cash. There is a lot of merchandise, including wands, clothing, magnets/ keyrings, books etc. It is also very picturesque. It is a must visit if you are a Harry Potter fan and 100% worth waiting out the queue.

If you were tasked with making the best Harry Potter shop you could (in a small space) I'm pretty sure you'd be doing most of things they do here. As well as a vast range of items the shop is absolutely brimming with themed decorations. What makes it great though is the staff, not only are they all passionate about the franchise but they interact with customers of all ages brilliantly. They have a lot of patience and I don't envy what they must have to tolerate on a daily basis. The shop does get busy and there's always that one family that insist on trying to walk the "wrong" way against the flow of customers. They seem to have implemented a good system under the current coronavirus situation although I decided to wait around the corner on our last visit to York and let my family go in without me. The inferior shops across from here must hate being so close to something that's implemented so well.

My kids loved it, kept talking about some sort of character or creature called 'mama viktor' which they love (which i admit i can't make heads or tails of!). Although I am not an avid Harry Potter fan, this is a wonderful shop that even had me interested. For anyone interested in this, the lines are certainly worth the wait, or do what I did and go nearer closing time on a weekday. Whilst there is a huge line most days, the shop sits wonderfully in The Shambles to help give the feeling of shopping in Harry Potter and the name is a wonderful play on Lord Voldermort, he who shall not be named (oops did it). Immediately from the street you get into the mood. The shop is small but holds plenty of Harry Potter merchandise to gawk at and my partner happily went around the shop to decide what she wanted a few times over. The prices aren't too extortionate compared and the smile on Harry Potter fans is well worth it. Staff were very friendly and accommodating, making the trip that little bit more pleasurable with their support staff doing a fantastic job to help us out when we had a question. Overall fantastic place and likely to return at some point. Thank you to those at the shop for making our visit so pleasant and the support staff backing the team :)

ABSOLUTELY MAGICAL EXPERIENCE ✨✨✨ I have waited for 20 years to buy my wand, and I'm so glad I came here. You actually get an Ollivanders style shopping experience, alongside the merchandise from the different houses. Music is played throughout the shop, I walked in to the song played at the yule ball and when I left the Triwizard Tournament's band was on. The shop was worth queuing for and the staff made my family and I feel Covid safe with their one way system.

Every Harry Potter fan needs to visit this shop! It's amazing!! The staff dress as witches and wizards and are legitimately interested in having a conversation about HP. The stock in the store is fantastic and they have gifts for everyone. The clothing range is quite broad and generally have a decent selection of sizes available. I always make it my mission to visit at least once Everytime I visit York. Their sister store "give a dog a bone" is equally as fantastic.

Great shop if you are a Harry Potter fan! Tucked away in a corner in the Shambles, this is not hard to miss. Quite a small shop but they have a lot of stuff in there from famous objects in the book (eg. Triwizard trophy) to games, this and cloths. Slightly on the expensive side but worth it if you are a Potterhead!!

I know this shop is a polarising place for some. It sells Harry Potter souvenirs and memorabilia for a start. If you're not a fan, don't visit. It was also the first of its type, so has a reputation and queues to match. There are two more Potter stores on The Shambles now, but for me this is the original and best. The staff are great, and because of the one-in-one-out policy, it's never too busy. You'll know if you're the type of person who will enjoy this place before you set off. I loved it.

This review is a bit of a tricky one for me • My partner and I left saying that this shop could really benefit from implementing a system that would only allow a certain number of people in at a time, but in reading the reviews here, I've learned that they normally do. So, what was going on the day we were there, I'm not sure, but it made for an incredibly unpleasant experience. The shop was absolutely •p•a•c•k•e•d• with some pretty inconsiderate teenagers, who managed not only to step all over our feet, but to give us proper pushes & shoves, too; a crazy-aggressive group of Potter enthusiasts! We were fully prepared to spend loads of money, but couldn't even get near the cash & decided we were better off getting out before claustrophobia really took it's toll. It's a good shop, lots of Harry Potter stuff. We went early in the morning so the queue wasn't as bad. Think we waited 5 minutes? Really friendly staff, a lot of the items are standard price/expensive as they are at HP World or HP Studios. They do sell unofficial butter beer which I was excited about. There are 2 other HP shops opened up next to The Shop That Must Not Be Named so there's plenty to look at. It's only 1 floor but it can get quite cramped. Things are quite high up and low down.

I visisted with ny wife and we wanted to get two jumpers so he helped us pick out the right size and talked to us about his love of Harry Potter. Its great to see staff who genuinely love their job even when its busy (we went around Christmas time). There are other shops selling Harry Potter merch nearby but this is by far the better store. Full of all things to do with Harry Potter, great shop for the HP fanatics, one way entrance and exit of shop. Picked up a hogwarts pencil case for my niece, I used it as a souvenir shop, others may go wild in the world of wizards and witches.
