Reviews of The York Ghost Merchants

A must see shop in the Shambles. It's a great experience. Team friendly, and great costume/uniform to fit the theme. It was fun to look through peepholes and press buttons to light bits up. A lot of effort into decor. Really reasonable price wise and every ghost unique which makes it more personal.

It's a really fun shop with interactive Nd hidden elements. Well worth a visit. It's a perfect memento from your visit to your. They're cute and and small and easy to travel with. And they're all unique and handmade, which makes them a little more special. (be prepared to queue for a couple of hours).

Literally the cutest shop I’ve ever been to. Personally I didn’t wait in line for that long, approx 10 min. Staff were so lovely and I loved their outfits. Saw a person on the floor above making the little ghosts and it made my heart warm, so wholesome. The ghosts are a tiny bit pricy, but this is a unique and independent shop so it completely makes sense. I found my little guy hidden behind a painting!

I have been wanting to visit here and purchase a York Ghost for a while and was not disappointed. Now there is a queue to get inside as its only a small shop but if you are aware of this before you go its not to bad .When I arrived on a Sunday morning about 10.45 the queue was not that bad I ended up waiting for about 45 -50 minutes when I got into the shop the line was maybe another hour on top of that. As you queue along the Shambles staff do come out to manage the long line of people. Inside the staff are friendly and tell you to have a look around and take your time to choose your ghosts you are not rushed at all .The ghosts themselves are great with loads on display to choose from and come in 2 sizes a large ghost was £19 and a small £7. I was really happy with my ghosts, if this is your thing then visiting here is a must when in York .

I was lucky enough to visit the shop last month after following their socials for a long time and making a couple of purchases online. I made the 2 hour trip to York via train specifically to visit the shop and was not disappointed in the least.
I arrived at opening time and the queue was already estimated to be around a 50 minute wait however it was closer to 40 when all was said and done. The shop is quite small and very popular hence the queue time but I assure you its worth it. The staff were both friendly and professional making a point to interact with people waiting to get in and seemed genuinely happy to see people in the shop.
The products speak for themselves, amazingly well crafted, all unique, and somehow manage to get their character across despite being inanimate you can really tell each ghost has a unique spirit so to speak. I'm now the proud owner of 9 different ghosts and they're always the first thing guests ask me about and I'm happy to talk at length about them haha.
The building itself is even amazing, located on the shambles which is an incredible street on its own, and then jam packed with things to look at. Not only fully stocked with ghosts but you can tell a lot of care was taken when designing the interior displays. I won't spoil the intricacies of it but I encourage you to take a second glance at everything in there.
I really can't speak highly enough about this shop I was blown away. If you guys ever want to open a Manchester Ghost Merchants I'll quit my job and sign up right now haha.
I can't wait to pick up more ghosts that call to me and I sincerely hope I'm lucky enough to be able to visit again soon. Thank you.

The best shop I've ever had the pleasure of visiting. It's a wonderful experience; each ghost is unique, and crafted upstairs I believe. When you've chosen yours, they can meet you at the front door on a little train ride. 🚆 There's also a mini photoshoot area for your ghost. Service is super friendly and helpful, too.
It's absolutely worth a visit and I'll always stop here when I return to York.

The queue is 2+ hours right as they open each day. But the shop is still quite fun! So glad I waited it out and picked my ghosts. Be sure to fully explore the shop, the ghosts like to hide. And be sure to let your chosen ghosts have their photo-shoot moment, too!

One of the unique shops in the Shambles, if you want a quirky gift or a reminder of your trip to York then this is the shop for you! Ghosts are made here, each individually made, they come in two sizes and each is different in the colour markings. The story behind the gift, the shop experience, the shop workers dressed up, picking your ghost - all of these makes up this shopping experience. It’s literally just one room, so of course there are only so many customers allowed in at once, so you could well be queuing to get into this shop - our wait time was about 30 mins, depends how busy it is at the time. I loved it, thought it was a great selling idea and a unique memento to take home with you!

Lovely small shop. Got there at 11am. Only 4 people ahead of us in queue. Bought 2 small ghosts.
Staff very friendly and helpful.
Looked in 2 peepholes in wall and opened the hidden door in wall. Took pictures of our ghosts in the photo area. Highly recommended a visit

The queue was very long thanks to the popularity of this place on social media, but in my opinion it was well worth the wait. The staff were very friendly and enthusiastic, and my partner and I were spoiled for choice on how many different designs they had available even when we arrived which was pretty late in the day. We are both pleased with our souvenirs from our visit to York.

A brilliant experience! Make sure you turn up at least an hour before closing as the queue is long! However worth the wait. Lovely quaint shop in the Shambles with a great experience. Brought two little ghosts and the staff were amazing

If you are in York or are looking to go you will already be aware that the city itself is known for being haunted and will offer many many ghost hunting or story telling tours in the day and in the evenings.
This adorable store is a must visit when coming through York, even if you do not bare to wait in the line and just peep inside. The cute trinket ghosts are each handmade in the upper parts of the historical store, I love to collect a special pieces from new places I visit for for this reason alone I knew I had to get my hands on one, regardless of the cost.
The purchase was an experience, the staff dressed in attire fitting the vibes, they were incredibly kind and constantly ensuring the line was kept in control, fairly and often thanking each person for their patience. Once inside you are free to look without pressure, peeping inside the hidden doors or holes for cute hidden surprises. After picking the once which we felt most drawn to the clerk took care with each one, wrapping it inside its own little box, I am told there normally is also a train but sadly it was not in commission the day we visited, though this did not in anyway dampen our visit. The big ghosts were £17 and the mini ones £9, there were also special edition ghosts which ranged in price as some were made from different materials
Please keep in mind that they do cut the line well before closing to ensure those waiting get the full experience, lines also start at 9am, we visited during the holidays and it went up the entire street and wrapped around to the left towards the market, we waited an hour and we arrived at 9.30am.
N. M.
We joined the queue just before 11 and it took about an hour to get in, but well worth the wait! The staff were all lovely and we left with a small family of ghosts. Will most certainly be back next time we visit York.

A wonderful little shop, highly recommend going to pick up a ghost souvenir if you're in York. They're all beautifully unique and very reasonably priced, going in the morning or on a weekday can help with avoiding queues if you're having concerns. Atmosphere, decor and ghost merchants are great and make it a fun experience. We were chatting with one of the merchants and she showed us the cutest friend (3rd photo) a little child had made for the shop, too cute! ❤
K. !.
I was so excited to be able to come to the York Ghost Merchants. There's so many uniquely painted ghost, one is sure to stand out to you. Loved the experience of looking for my own unique ghost.
a. f.
What an incredible little shop! The vibe of the shop is brilliant with a haunted vibe. We bought two ghosts, which are completely unique, each one hand crafted. We travelled to York just to go this shop. The lore and myth they have created really adds to the experience. The staff were kind informed and motivated. They were very kind and answered all of our questions. We will go again!
B.
Lovely little shop located within the Shambles. I've been to York a few times and always have to get a ghost every time I visit. The staff are amazing and lovely to have a chat with.
E. F.
A charming gem of a shop, the perfect fit for the Shambles. The whole shop decor is in the spirit (no pun intended) of the ghosts they sell. It’s a real experience. The ghosts are varied and handmade in York. The shop staff are lovely.
Admittedly you do have to queue, the Shambles is always busy and very narrow. The shop itself is tiny so it cannot accommodate many customers at a time.
C.
We anticipated a wait - our queue time was 1 hour. The staff kept us updated and were joyful.
On waiting to go it, speaking to the staff I indicated what my son was looking for a makers mark ghost. He explained makers mark are 1 in 1000 or 1 in 100 dependent on size, but supported him when inside making the experience magical. And yes, he managed to find 2. One of each size.
You are not rushed when viewing the ghosts, over 600 to choose from. Time given for photos. Customer experience is at the top of the agenda here. Well worth the wait.
C. M.
Amazing experience and super cute ghosts and at a really good price. The staff were dressed for the part and were super friendly throughout. I will say we did wait a long time to get in though this is partly due to it being half term so if you are going be ready to queue but well worth the wait. The ghosts were reasonably priced and a really good memory! We will be back again!
M. P.
I loved it! Unfortunately It's too popular! But I can see why! The figures are so cute! And the reason behind the shop is so lovely and the people who worked there were so patient and kind!
I went on a Thursday and it was a 2 hour wait for most of the day. So be prepared! And it is small and can be a bit cramped but people on the whole were okay squeezing round each other and they only let like 6 people in the shop at a time (hence the queue)
K. A.
If you're reading this you already know how cool this place is. If you don't know...
If you want to pick up a unique gift for someone or for yourself, the ghost here are really something else and very cool.
Get here early if you don't want to wait too long in line. Opens at 10, get there by 9 or your gonna have a 60+ minute wait during the busy days, which in York is probably most days.
Well worth it...
And if tou do get in line...watch out for the markings on the ground, don't block the walk ways or other business entrances.
E. H.
This is the cutest little shop. It's the tiniest little shop so don't be suprised if you have to queue. They have a large selection of ghosts in a couple of sizes. The whole set up of this shop is amazing from start to finish. The way the staff address each other, the quirky extras in the shop, the packaging and even the way you can have your order delivered to the door of the shop on a wee train! Awesome!
J. L.
The Queue is part of the experience and honestly I loved it. It added to the excitement and was worth the wait. Me and my partner picked out two beautiful ghosts in our favorite colours, green and blue, got a picture and they are ready to come home with us. The staff were fantastic and I recommend people go and experience the York Ghost Merchants
C. M.
We finally managed to visit the shop for the first time yesterday after waiting over a year. We arrived around 2pm and were told the queue was 1hr 25, we entered the shop exactly 1hr 27 later! The queues were well-managed and the staff were polite and apologetic about the wait times, but the lines were constantly moving forwards so it didn't feel like we were waiting that long even with a young child in tow. A lovely staff member (I didn't catch her name sorry!) brought our 4y/o a tiny seedling ghost which absolutely made her day!
Once we were inside the store, we were given information about the prices and told to explore the whole store at our own pace- we didn't feel rushed at all and spent around 25 minutes inside. The store itself is so whimsical with hundreds of ghosts laid out across huge shelves, and others hiding in all different nooks and crannies. We originally planned to only pick up a couple of plain-ish phantoms but with our daughter having the orange seedling, she ended up choosing a matching orange ghost family.
The same staff member that gave us the seedling was so patient and engaging with our 4y/o inside and made her experience so special, showing her lots of little secrets around the store and talking to her about the ghost walks and old map of York. A lot of the time in small stores it can feel like you’re being ushered out of the way when you have a chatty small child with you (which I totally get when it’s busy) but we didn’t feel like this at all, and I think it says a lot that our daughter hasn’t talked about anything else for the last 24hours and can’t wait to go back! I truly can’t recommend this place enough. Thank you for making our first of many visits so magical.

Visited on my birthday. What an amazing little place! It's about the whole experience - not just the purchase of the ghosts. There is little quirky things to see and discover inside. The staff are all friendly and inviting. We only had to wait about 10 to 15 minutes in the que, for entry. This wasn't an issue as we enjoyed chatting with purple man, and the couple in the qué ahead of us. Inside, spoilt for choice with the Ghosts. Love the little street scene to photograph your ghosts in, and staff check, before they wrap them, if you wanted to take any photos. I don't know when the model train that runs around the shop is used. Have seen videos of it in use but not sure as to when it is. Would have been fun to see that in use, adding to the whole experience. Maybe it only gets used when there is no que? Came away with three items which I'm very pleased with. The packaging and everything is perfect. Such great details and such a fun idea. Definitely worth visiting.
K.
There was a small queue to enter which was managed well by a member of staff, we went on a Thursday morning in May which is one of the quieter times, and queued for 30 minutes. The shop is small but this adds to the charm of the place. Staff were helpful and the experience/service was excellent. Well worth the wait
A. C.
Great place to go if you want a spooky souvenir from your visit to York. So many different ghosts to choose from, all totally unique.
Be prepared to queue to get in, we waited an hour and a half to get in. From what I gathered there is not really any quieter times to go and you will always be queuing. So set aside plenty of time if you want to go here.
R. B.
A really lovely shop set in a beautiful location. The staff have set up a welcoming atmosphere with a very British queuing system to ease the demand of influencers.
e. b.
This shop is really quirky, it's best to get there early as there tends to be a long queue, but inside there are many different coloured ghosts which is nice as each one is unique and also some hidden surprises that you have to look around and find in the walls, The price is really good for these little figures. They also have a train that delivers the ghost to you once you've bought them but it wasn't working when we went.
A. P.
An absolute must see in York! This shop was the spark that ignited the idea of visiting York as we saw a lot of pictures of people getting the little ghosts and there was something really heart warming in the idea that they are all unique and in the idea of transforming something like a ghost into a symbol of goodness. The shop did not disappoint at all! Yes the quewe was long but it is totally worth it as you get quite a unique experience when you're inside. It's really fun and I'll say it again, it's really heart warming. The staff really makes sure you absolutely enjoy the experience and there's even a little train that can deliver your ghost to the exit!
M. M.
I was dying to visit this shop during my trip to York. The week we went was very busy and there was a huge queue outside the shop even early in the morning. I had to wait for almost 2 hours outside even if I have a horrible back pain. I wanted my ghosts so bad! The experience inside the shop was amazing. I love how they added a lot of details everywhere. Like you can take a picture of your ghost in a little photobooth or find some hidden ghost behind a frame. After you payed they put your ghosts in a locomotive that you can follow around the shop to the exit. I think it’s very original and so cute! I am very pleased with my ghosts and I want to applause the ones who invented it because it is brilliant. The success is very well deserved!
R. J. L.
An absolutely wonderful shop that isn't just a retail store but an experience in itself. The staff are absolutely amazing, so accommodating and assist with the long queues. I cannot recommend this shop enough if you want a unique souvenir of York but be prepared to queue as the shop is understabably very popular.
C. D.
Absolutely stunning little shop stacked to the rafters with their highly collectible and sort after ghosts. A stunning array of colours and sizes displayed in a unique and highly creative way with your purchase even being delivered to you in a model train!! Lots to look at and see, might have to queue to get in but the wait is well worth it, you cannot visit York without a trip here. Highly recommended.
J. H.
The two hour wait on a freezing cold day was made bearable by the two lovely people managing the queue. They not only kept things moving but were full of information about the company and helped in any way they could. Once inside the shop you have so many to choose from its likely you may buy more than one. A true step back in time to old style, courteous shopping.
M. H.
Cute shop and little experience. Long queues at times. Would recommended queuing in the morning before they open or on a weekday. The only downside is that the shop is quite small and the train in the shop wasn't running when we went. The ghosts were adorable and the outfits the shop assistants wore aided the experience.
D. R.
Cute, spooky, unique little ghosts.
No visit to York is complete until you adopt at least one.
Get there early to avoid queues.
C. d. L.
It’s a ghost shop. That’s it, nothing else. However, each ghost is unique and there’s one for every taste. The queues are massive (I waited almost 2h) so go there early. It’s totally worth it!
S. L.
We visited the ghost merchants for the first time on Valentine’s Day 2022.
The queue was always huge, every time we passed so we didn’t stop but realised that it just wasn’t going to get any smaller so eventually have in and joined.
The staff outside were lovely and was chatting to the Pele in the queue to try and keep our ‘spirits’ up.
It was very wet and freezing cold but the 1 and 3 quarter hours that were queued was totally worth it.
We purchased a few ghosts to join our family and start a new obsession.

The York Ghost 👻, This particular store is in the shambles. Very busiest place and you can find so many different stores in here.
The York Ghost store is the busiest one , You have to wait at-least an hour in line to enter the store. But the wait is totally worth it. There is a store behind this store but I’m not much aware of that so I’m not gonna mention that here. But I can tell u that whoever visit York they would buy one ghost 👻 at-least. I dint have much time so I dint get my ghost, I hope you get ur ghost when u visit the place.
T. “. T.
Had to queue but worth it. We were greeted in the street by the merchants and given some history about the ghosts. Lovely little shop, each ghost is unique, no 2 the same. If you go to York you must make a visit
J. B.
Very tiny shop but a worthwhile visit! The ghosts are unique and one of a kind with specific York history. However be prepared for the extremely long queue!
B. P.
I've visited the York Ghost Merchants twice now and both times have been delightful. It's such a wonderful experience and it's great to return back to add to your collection. Can't wait for round 3!
S. W.
So pleased with my little ghost. Staff are really friendly. When you buy your ghost it is delivered on train. This is a shopping experience with a photo op for your ghost & other fun ghostly elements to discover. Highly recommended 👻🌟
s.
If you like ghosts you'll love it here. There's a bit of a waiting time to see the popular ghosts. The shop is filled with different size and colour ghosts. There also is a scene where you can put ghosts and take pic to see what they look like in different light. I recommend this place
C. S.
I have literally only just stepped out of the shop after an absolutely amazing experience and just needed to leave them a review straight away! I am honestly beaming with joy! The staff were magnificent, it really has those spooky vibes all round, It’s also not just a little shop either, it is a whole experience! The lovely lady who welcomed us in even went so far as to gift me one of their tote bags after finding out it was my birthday the next day! Highly recommend and definitely worth the wait to get in!!!
C.
Bought into the hype and queued to get a ghost.
Process was let down by an Entitled Reality TV Star (Made in Chelsea) and staff using their position to jump the queues. Owner was insistent for him to join the queue but relented and let them push in.
The shop is great, quaint and you need to start queuing. (we got there at 0900 for a 10 O'clock opening)
L. H.
It's a cool experience but only worth it if you're really into it and know what you're getting into. I had to wait over an hour to get into the shop and despite them only letting in a certain amount of people, it was still very cramped. At least the staff is super lovely and really adds to the overall atmosphere and they all have so much patience. I did get a cute little ghost that I really like, but I would have liked to really take my time in the shop, which wasn't possible due to the amount of people in there. No one rushes you, but it's not a nice feeling to be squished between everyone.
T. M.
The initial incentive for our York adventure and wow, did it exceed even high expectations! Such a lovely welcome from the team and the most heartfelt and amazing concept! Our ghost have be found!
A.
I absolutely love the york ghost shop! I think that is it amazing for gifts or just as a treat for yourself.
The queue is often quite long and the last couple of times we have been, we have waited around 30 minutes. I do not mind waiting though as you can spend as long as you want in the shop (although it is small so you are usually there for 10/15 minutes). Also the staff are very friendly and help keep the queue moving orderly.
Definitely look around the shop as there are pictures you can open with more ghosts behind as well as peep holes!
F. W.
The ghosts are very cute and one spoke to me! The shop is very cute and atmospheric. Seeing the ghosts on the shelves is a beautiful sight.
Only downside is the long queue, which seemed slow moving. We got there at 9.50 and waited about two hours to go in. Staff do manage the queue and are very friendly and helpful. It was difficult to tell where the queue ended though - I ended up accidently cutting in the queue before a person in front of me kindly told me the line continued down the other side of the road! Although the wait was long I did not feel disappointed. They are a little expensive, but this is because they are handmade above the shop.
Be prepared for the long wait. It is unavoidable unfortunately, at least whilst I was there (Aug 2022) - there seemed to be a long queue no matter the day or time.
I hope that the owners will be able to reduce waiting times. Perhaps by putting a reasonable limit on time people spend in the store during busy times or having a second place to sell them either online or in York.
A. B.
Lovely tiny shop of unique handcrafted ghosts. A very unique souvenir to take home with you from York.
J. K.
Probably the most enchanting place I’ve ever visited. Every thought has gone into this store, from the ghosts to the little quirks inside. The people there were chatty and fun, keeping our toddler entertained while we queued outside and pointing out little secrets for him to find. Very reasonably priced and would make a wonderful gift or keepsake. Worth the wait!
m. w.
What an amazing place. I hate queues but the tame 1 hour wait was well worth it. The staff were enchanting and very engaging throughout the wait. The history of the building was great then the real fun of which ghost is coming home. We will be back for another queue as all part of the experience, as most people are also hooked on the trip back in time to a butcher’s shop, turned into a ghost emporium. Whilst there try the butchers across the road, amazing sausages and pork pies heavenly!!!!
S. S.
Wonderful little shop 🖤 The process was great , as there are tons of ghosts to choose from , including a month ghost and other limited editions . One the opposite side of the ghosts theres an interactive wall with peepholes to see some cute ghosts chilling out in their own world , and the street where you can take a photo with your ghost. If you wish there is a train ride that takes your ghost from the register the door ( a sweet addition to the overall experience). Everything is so beautifully decorated , and the staff are so friendly and kind. The box you take your ghost home in shows how much detail and effort goes into these things. They take cash card and contactless so you dont have to worry about finding the nearest bank , which is very helpful. Whilst there was a queue , it was quite small and got through quickly. Overall one of my most wholesome experiences , all about the little details :)
M. A.
Small and quirky with row upon row of small individually painted pot ghosts.
Yet without a doubt one of the most popular shops on Shambles.
Polite staff and a wide selection of spooks to buy.
Worth the wait to get in if its busy.
A. R.
The queue is long but definitely worth it! We waited in the queue for about and hour and a half. The staff were lovely and kept my son engaged during the wait, answering all the little questions he had about the shop and the shambles in general. A blonde gentleman gave my son a small ghost and he hasn't stopped talking about it since. If you get the chance to visit this charming shop while in York I couldn't recommend it enough. We bought two little ghosts to live in our house and suspect we will be getting more next time we're in York!
P. J. (.
Absolutely charming little shop, An amazing concept and something I've never seen before.
As the name suggests they sell ghosts in all different colours and a few different sizes they even have a limited edition ghost for each month
The staff are lovely and the decor and feel is definitely very whimsical. Needless to say me and my wife have got another new collection we're going to grow.
Definitely a must see if you ever find yourself at the Shambles in York
b. s.
The most creatively wonderful shop in York! It has become very popular recently so there was a queue to get in but worth the wait for the magic inside! Lots of brilliant hand made one of a kind ghost figures to choose from! So different to any other kind of shop in York and the staff are absolutely amazing and so invested in their work. 100% recommend visiting this shop to anyone who is planning a trip to York.
尘.
Very cute ghosts with colourful styles. The shop busy every day and it needs you to stand in line for a long time if you get there late!
J. M.
We entered the queue at 14:10 and had finished and exited the shop at around the same time an hour later, but it was so worth the wait! We had tried to join the queue in the morning when the wait time was at about 1hr 15 minutes, so it is just luck of the draw when you turn up, but I guarantee you will have to queue. It is all part of the experience in getting your very own York Ghost. This was a memento for our anniversary and I am very pleased with our new little friend. The staff are wonderful and will assist you while you are still in the queue. If it's raining they have umbrellas, if you can't stand for a long time, they have little stools. All the ghosts are unique and very special. The shop itself is a little treasure trove with hidden doors, and a little place to take a photo of your ghost. Enjoyed the whole experience very much. I didn't know this shop existed but to have visited it is an honour!
C. R.
I loved coming here, it was a fab experience. The ghosts are super cute and unique, the wall of secrets was an absolute thrill to play about with, the staff were wonderful and really made it special - and i adore how everything is so oldy worldy and just fits ! Advice - get there super early, well before it opens and start queuing to avoid the crowded queues - the queue fills up fast!!
A. J.
Absolutely loved it! A most if you are in york! I'd recommend getting there early.

For those people saying ITS A MUST SEE in York...I'm not seeing it myself. I'm a lover of all things spooky and loved the idea of a shop dedicated to ghosties.
I went here in the UK summer holiday and this us probably the busiest time you could go.
Every day we walked by the que was snaking down the shambles and round the corner.
If you were at the end of the que you can expect an 2.5-3 hour wait.
We were not intending to go until we had a couple hours to kill before our train on our last day.
We arrived at 930am and the que was already leaving the shambles.
We qued unti just after 11am before we got in.
Staff have patients of a Saint and had fabulous customer service ensuring no que jumping and no council rules were broken.
Finally inside it is a small room that allows around 6 or 8 people in at anyone time. On the left is shelves of unique made large ghosts priced at £17 each. Below these were the smaller ghosts at £9 each. (Special edition ghosts were individually priced in cabinets)
To the right were holes in the walls that you peep through to reveal hidden mysteries.
We were glad we looked behind the photo frame on the wall as these had the phantoms in which I immediately wanted to buy £20 each.
All in all...is it worth the 2 or 3 hour wait...probably not unless you absolutelyhave nothing else to do...and when in York theres always plenty to do. Am I glad I bought 1.. or 3..yes.
I do think though that in future if they had a stall elsewhere or a different que for people not bothering going into the shop but just wanting to buy a ghost then this could also be successful. If the ghosts were wrapped up do it was a lucky dip! I think that would ease pressures. I wouldn't revisit if I had to que again.

Lovely little shop the ghost figures are a bit overpriced but I do like to support local artists. The shop has a couple of fun secrets for you to discover. Do be warned the shop was made popular by social media so unless it's a work day and during working hours and not a holiday you're going to be waiting a long time in the queue. I ended up waiting for around 20 minutes in the street to get in on a Tuesday at 11 am so be prepared for the wait if you're really dead set on going in.
J. P.
Queued for 1.5hrs on a friday to get in, luckily it was a sunny day. Very well organised as to not block any of the other shops. Not rushed into chosing and you're encouraged to photo your choice in the little booth. I believe Tues/Thurs are quietest days

Must-visit for York! Bear in mind, due to its popularity, you'll likely queue for around an hour to get in, but staff is great once you get in. Great outfits, very friendly, lots of curiosities to see other than the ghosts. Each ghost is unique and reasonably priced, (though difficult to avoid getting a few and it soon adds up!) Very pleased with my choices though, or rather, the ghosts that chose me ;)
J. B.
Such a unique shop. But if you want to get in, prepare to queue or arrive early. Every ghost is handmade and 1 of a kind. The staff are super friendly and add a great feel to the vibe of the shop. Lots of Hidden features within the shop as well, also, don't forget to ask about the train!!
J.
I really loved this quirky shop!! I finally got to buy my very own ghost!!! They are finely crafted and unique you get to select your very own. You can take pictures 📸 of them to in various scenes, the staff are very friendly too! You must come here! Bare in mind you may have to queue up as its a small shop.
B.
Friendly, engaging staff in a wonderfully well made and thought out shop (‘shop’ doesn’t do it justice).
The Ghost figures are obviously a big part of the visit, and they’re well made with quite a thoughtful background to some.
There is real charm to be found in the interactions with staff and enjoying the store itself with it’s many little surprises.
It is worth getting there early, but the queue looked to move quickly enough anyway, which was managed very well with another attendant on the street.
M. B.
Visited this weekend, was an hour wait in the queue but kind of expected the wait as its a popular attraction. The shop assistant at the door was very friendly and very informative. I brought home a large and small Ghost which are very cute. Only disappointment was the train wasn't working which is meant to deliver the ghosts to the customers and I'd been looking forward to it - but everything else was lovely.

Loved this place and bought my first lil Boo.. I will definitely return.

We visited The York Ghost Merchants amazing shop today. We travelled from Wales to get a special ghost for a birthday present for my daughter. She ended up with 4 ! and I bought 2 for myself and my grandson (who patiently sat in his pram ) was so lucky to get a seed ghost. 🥰 The queue was 1 hour 15 mins but well worth it.
The staff interacted all the time in the queue, giving out information and chatting and the shop itself is so charming and quirky.
Thank you 😊
P.
I love the ghost shop! ❤️ I love how each ghost is different and enjoyed the experience of picking my ghosts and getting to take pictures of them in the store. Unfortunately on my most recent visit the store was so busy and we had to queue for a long time to get in. Once I was in the store I was really rushing to pick my ghosts, I didn’t get to take pictures of them and the ghost train wasn’t working either (I’m not sure if this was due to it being so busy); however, staff were by no means rushing me and it was just myself being conscious of the fact that many more people were waiting to get in so this is not the stores fault - this was just a pointer to try and go on quieter days if you’re like myself and want time to enjoy the experience without feeling guilty for the others waiting. Also, is it possible for the store to provide paper bags perhaps? I bought a lot in the store (oops) and needed a bag to carry my ghosties round in for the day and had to buy the £3 canvas bag which I won’t use again. Overall, I love it here and is the main reason we travel 3 hours to come to York 👻❤️
J. Z.
Queuing for around 2 hours, but every second is worth when u get your lovely and unique ghost 👻
S. W.
Massive queue which wasn't great but once inside we were able to browse for as long as we wanted. Chose our new ghostly friends and were encouraged to take a photo of them before paying at an old fashioned till, served by staff dressed in amazing old style uniforms. Our new friends once wrapped and boxed were delivered to us at the door by a ghost train!!!!! Amazing. But probably a good idea to time your visit wisely to try and avoid the queues.
P. A.
This was our main priority to visit this place when we came to York as I saw it via tiktok. It did not disappoint 🖤 yes we had to queue for 2 hours but its totally worth the experience. Staff are so lovely and I love how they dress, very to theme 🖤 happy with our little ghosties 👻
C. G.
A delightful shop, kept by endlessly patient shopkeepers who do a great job of keeping the experience special despite the long wait times! Their online customer service was excellent too - my spook got a little grubby in transit, and when I emailed to ask how best to clean him I got a friendly response the same day (warm soapy water and a sponge btw!)
J. S.
Queuing was half the battle, but once inside the experience of seeing all the ghosts and being able to grab and buy the ones which speak to you? Fantastic, brilliant time getting them!
L. C.
Well worth the wait, lovely little place, couldn't decide so came away with 5 😅 all of the little ghosts spoke to me! Started queuing at 9.15 and got into the shop around 10.30. would recommend going early as they do turn people away from the queue if it gets too long. Not my usual place to visit but absolutely loved it!
E. C.
Shame the train thing I'd heard about wasn't happening any more. We queued 30min before it opened and was about 10th in the queue. Love the little ghosts, decor of the shop is really good and the staff were lovely. Also thought the ghosts were well priced (£9 for small ones and £17 (I think) for the larger ones).
M. D.
Fantastic experience. Only queued for a short time. It was very well orchestrated and well worth the wait. The shop is small but there are so many ghosts to choose from although I feel that they choose you!
P. Q.
Great experience to visit this shop little ghosts are so cute and fancy 😍 you have to sometimes wait in queue to went inside but it's worth it. Staff helpful lovely and dress in old style fashion i love it
J. C.
Absolutely lovely little shop. The ghosts are so cool and cute. I love mine I chose. The staff are so in character and super chatty and helpful. The wait was quite long though and the queue system is a bit confusing first time around but that can be blamed to Tiktok for making it go viral
D. K.
You must visit this unique little shop if you come to York. We visited during the week to purchase a ghost for our granddaughter. We can never thank David the ghost merchant enough. We will never forget the kindness that he showed us during our visit. Thanks again David, from Donald and Sally-anne.
w. h.
A lovely oddity long queue but worth it for me personally. Also very well priced in my opinion.
A. R.
1 word of advice is get there for when it opens if not you are in for a very long wait we qued for over an hour to get in as my brother had wanted to have a look inside the shop etc the staff are great and tell you all about the ghosts and how they are maid and inside the shop you can purchase a ghost and it can be delivered by the ghost train near the cashier.
E. B.
Absolutely love this shop! The craftsmanship is just lovely, what a creative and unique momento for visiting York. You can pop in to pickup your very own unique ghost and the staff are just wonderful. I'm so pleased this shop is going from strength to strength. I've got my lil house ghost, you definitely need to pop in to get yours! Highly recommended 👌
E. W.
We visited on the 9th September and queued in the pouring rain for 45 minutes, the staff were kind, fun and handing out umbrellas to those of us who forgot to prepare for soggy weather! We were welcomed into the queue and the shop by a fabulous gentleman with an excellent beard, he showed us how to pick our ghosts and made our experience every bit as kooky as we wanted it to be. As we left the shop he asked us if we enjoyed ourselves and if our experience was everything we hoped it would be. Without a doubt the most unique shop in York and well worth queuing for, even in the pouring rain! Thank you for making all our spooky dreams come true, we will be back for more when we venture north again.
H. D.
Amazing experience! Queued for one hour! Picked the cutest little ghosts ever!! Staff are wonderful!!
S.
Fantastic little shop on the Shambles, persuaded my wife to get there early as previous 2 days the queue was snaking down and around the street. I was not disappointed, the merchants on hand are brilliant and I found my Phantom hiding within the shop and even my wife who was at 1st a bit cynical, fell in love with and picked a little Boo! They were delivered to us on the miniature train and we left very happy. This rounded off our mini break to York perfectly. Thankyou Merchants!!
E. P.
Happily surprised at the character of the little shop and the staff and ambience really helped with the atmosphere of the interior.
As far as ghosts go, they were cute little devils....if not a little fallic.
If you don't mind waiting it's worthwhile for the novelty for sure.
H. S.
If they had a sixth star I’d have given an extra one! I’ve been anticipating a trip here for a while as the figurines are just adorable. The store opens at 10 so I anticipated a long but worth it wait. I arrived at 9:45 with a queue already around the corner of the Shambles so knew I was in for a few hours of admiring the area. The merchants were so friendly and polite and really didn’t deserve the verbal abuse from tourists who weren’t accepting that the line had exceeded the amount of people the area could hold (no one deserves abuse even at work so I hope those people get a visit from Karma). It took me 2 hours to get in but would tell everyone reading this that if you are not early it will definitely be a 3 hour wait. I was super happy to see all the ghosts in the shop with hidden holes which you could peep in to see ghosts wearing hats! Even with the long wait the merchants were so kind and polite inside which was the icing on the cake for me ☺️
Anyway- it’s definitely worth it! Xx 👻

If you have come across the queue for the York Ghost Merchants while walking through the Shambles you may have wondered what the fuss was about. The answer is hard to explain. To start with York ghosts are not available to buy freely online. They are hand made in small batches, each single one slightly different so no two are the same . They are either sold directly from the shop or in releases from the website where they sell out in minutes. As each one is different no collection can be the same. In size they come in original and boo, boo being the smaller of the two. The colours vary from brightly coloured to plain white or black.
The shop is full of ghosts to choose from and the shopkeepers are dressed in old style clothing to match the interior of the shop and can be seen wandering up and down outside policing the queue so it does not cause obstructions to the other businesses or pedestrians. I love the shop the staff are friendly helpful and a credit to the business. The ghosts themselves are unique and a great memento of York the city of a thousand ghosts
R. A.
Yes you can sometimes get limited releases on their website (if your super quick) but nothing compares to the experience of the quirky shop in the shambles. Just as interesting to go and see all the unique ghosts now as it was a few years back. Though it can take a little longer to get in the shop it’s well worth the wait!!!
M.
A brilliant souvenir to remind you of your visit to York. Visited last year and of course due to its popularity growing, there is now a queue that can be as long as 2 hours to wait. We were there from 9:30am and there was a queue already for the shop to open at 10am.
The merchants are amazing folk that not only try to manage the queue, but always greet with a smiley face. All of these ghosts are handmade and unique hence being collectable. Whilst others say they are overpriced knick knacks, others see them as pieces of art that should be appreciated (people collect thimbles, patches, badges) so when something is different and ‘weird’ people are quick to jump to conclusions.
If you are planning to queue- bring a drink, prepare for not moving for a while, people passing and asking why you are queuing etc. if you cannot stand for long, ask a merchant who will be queue managing if you can have a stool. If you have kids, make them aware that they will have to wait.
To note the shop is quite small so people will take their time looking at everything.
Respect the craft and respect the merchants that are trying their best to manage this unique experience.
O. R.
The most wonderful wee shop I've been in for a while!! it was a such a great experience and the staff were absolutely lovely :)) I love my phantoms so much (*´ω`*)
G. J. M.
Had a bit of a wait but was so worth it, had an amazing experience, staff were really friendly, love the decor and how the staff dress. Couldn’t choose just one ghost, ended up getting three! Will definitely be back!
H. M.
Beautiful little shop with a fascinating history. All of the ghosts are individual so there’ll never be one the same as yours which I think is pretty cool. The staff are dressed appropriately for the historic feel of the shop.
The only bad points I had, was that I thought they put the ghosts you buy on a train to be collected on the way out, which wasn’t working when we visited. Otherwise the queue was very very long.
I wish we had had the time to be able to get there when it opened at 11 to avoid the queue but we already had other plans. It would be so much better if they had an online queuing system like some of the restaurants had where you get a call or a text to say your slot to enter was coming soon. There’s so much to visit and see in the area and seems a shame to waste an hour and a half queuing
S. M.
Great little shop with fantastic service, friendly funny and outgoing staff at hand to get the history of the ghosts of York. You will have to que to get into this shop and it can take over 30 minutes so be prepaired for that. Overall I would recommend visiting this shop, if not to buy one of their hand made ghost but to at least look at what these guys are doing.
E.
I had been wanting to go here for over years and finally made.
Totally loved the experience. If you love strange and unusual you will love this place. The staff were friendly and overall awesome and best of all I got myself a family of ghosts who I will treasure forever 👻❤️
L. C.
A shop with real life magic! The ghosts themselves are fascinating and unique and the shop I'd like nothing I've ever seen before. The staff are knowledgeable and friendly and it was a pleasure to meet and chat with Mr Bloodworth
V. W.
Absolutely love this place, the staff are amazing so friendly, got there early so didn't wait long to get in, took my 5 year old to choose her own ghost and one for her sister and they were both over the moon. Can't wait to visit again.
O. C.
A lovely little shop full of ghosts. very nice, and good customer service
J. “. C.
Well worth the 30mins wait to get in, great selection of ghosts, fairly priced!
A. C.
This is an amazing shop to visit. The ghosts are the highlight but the entire journey is an experience to be treasured. Can't wait to visit again
R. R.
Lovely little shop with hidden secrets. A very unique product and experience. The staff were incredible and very good with my kids.
T. “. A.
Lovely quirky local shop. The staff are super friendly. We queued for about an hour and it was well worth it.

Absolutely amazing little shop! My fiance and I were in York to visit our wedding venue and caterer and had a day exploring York. We took a walk down the shambles and I was drawn to a window display of these cute little ghosts. I didn't realise the queue behind me though, so as the shop is very small you you have to wait to be admitted in. However this was explained to me by the lovely staff that are in victorian dress to match the theme :) The queue was about 20 minutes so not too long but it is 100000% worth waiting! The man on the door explained to me in the queue what the ghosts were, they are all unique and handmade in the workshop above the shop. When I got in the shop, the member of staff inside was super lovely, telling me a story about the ghosts and how everything worked. They assured me that even though there's a queue to make sure I take my time browsing and not to worry. I never felt pressured while in there and wasn't heckled at all, it was a very lovely experience. My fiance and I picked two ghosts for us at home and there was a little set where you can take pictures of your ghosts. We also picked black and white phantoms for our wedding also!
Would defo recommend visiting this lovely shop and getting a lil ghost for yourself!
P. F.
Wonderful little place that oozes character and is full of little ghosts each with their own individual idiosyncrasies and personalities.
Discovered this place after a friend posted their ghost on Instagram and have since bought a few of the open release monthly phantoms, but finally made it across to York today to visit the shop in person, so obviously our ghost gang grew by a few more...
Needless to say it was a hard choice given the range in the shop, and the fact that no two are alike make these beautifully collectible!
Now we just need to find a fitting place to display them...
C.
Fantastic little shop right in the middle of the shambles. Please be warned the queues can be extremely long. We arrived at 9am (1hr early) to queue and people were already waiting. We were approx 10th in queue.
D. W.
The most popular of York souvenir shops, take home your very own unique ghost.
S.
Ohh, if only Google allowed me to rate this place ABOVE 5 stars!
The staff were welcoming, talkative and friendly, the store itself was full of secrets and exciting elements such as the train, and the ghosts were adorable! There was a huge range of new friends to choose from in varying shapes, sizes, colours and price ranges.
I could've spent all day there choosing my ghosts and talking to the staff!
It's got to be my new favourite shop in York! We'll be back, for sure!! 💙
A. L.
Waited in the queue for a couple of hours while kids wondered around the town. The kids absolutely loved the theatre, and choosing their own Ghost, and they felt it was worth the wait.
J. P.
Love this shop so much. It’s amazing for tourists visiting the area. The ghosts are great as gifts and the experience is really fun. Only 2 people are allowed in the shop at a time but it’s definitely worth the wait!
R. B.
Absolutely my favourite place to go to in York. Such a cool and quirky little shop and the ghosts are made upstairs by master ghostmakers. The staff in the shop are so lovely and accommodating, even in stressful covid times. The whole experience in one little shop is amazing!
A. C.
This is a must see for visiting York, staff are very friendly and a great all round experience.
G. C.
The ghosts are so cute and this shop is definitely worth looking at while your here but try and come before it opens as the queue during the day can be hours long.
C. H.
Always a pleasure to arrive, hard to leave. Fab new designs and new spirit visitors.
Friendly staff/curators....if a little pale and wispy 👻
S. B.
A first rate visit with authentic Victorian vibe, lovely polite staff and the most wonderful ghosts your likely to see. Five stars from me.
K. h.
I've now brought a few people York Ghosts for Christmas and birthdays, and have two myself. I absolutely adore this little shop with all its sneaky fun twists and highly recommend it to anyone who'll listen. Even at their busiest periods the staff are friendly and wonderful.
G. H.
Incredible little place. Staff were wonderful making sure everyone was updated on the waiting time and striking up conversations with everyone.
J. S.
We visited over the weekend and had the best shopping experience we've had in a long time! The staff were so friendly and welcoming while we were waiting in the queue, telling us the history of the shop and the street.
Once inside the shop has little bits you can engage with and even a mini replica of the road to take a picture of your ghost on. They come in beautiful little boxes and are so well priced.
Overall the best experience and worth the visit.
A. S.
We waited for over an hour but it's part of the visit very popular and worth the wait
E. M.
The most amazing and unique spooky little shop!! Staff are absolutely lovely and have so much patience dealing with the queue. I did wait about an hour altogether which also involved an 'informal' queue (this is not regulated by the shop and purely on the honesty of other people waiting) to then be admitted to the queue, so just be prepared to wait a while, made it more exciting I found. The ghosts are so well made and just the cutest thing, I love mine so much!! I'll defo be visiting again but might try to get there a lot earlier.
I. C.
Absolutely stunning collection of ghosts in a wonderful Victorian boutique setting. Get your ghosts delivered by train for that extra spark of fun.
A. M.
Brilliant. Perfectly spooky addition to visiting York. The Shambles location is amazing too. The whole concept is amazing. The craftsmanship, the ethos. Everything. I LOVE it. And it's obviously working too as November's phantom sold out online in a few minutes! So, to ensure you can 100% grab a ghost, you need to pop to the shop. Now, this is where it lost a bit of it's edge for me (and a star). Due to the size, we quite rightly have to queue and entry is limited to just a handful of people at any one time - which gives you a chance to browse the ghosts available and explore the little nooks and crannies once inside without having to push past people. With each ghost being unique in their design, the selection obviously lessens as the day goes by so, having queued for an hour or so, it was extremely frustrating to see people further back behind us in the queue able to make a purchase from a selection of ghosts brought out to them on a tray! I know a number of other people were put out by this and it happened quite a few times, with the customers being invited into the shop to pay, meaning this was not a collection of an online order and our entry to the shop was further delayed. This service should be provided to all and made inclusive rather than elite although I fully appreciate why that would be impossible and therefore urge you not to falll into this routine. The half a dozen or so customers around me in the queue were obviously disgruntled. Getting there early really doesn't mean you get better pickings of what's available when those who arrive after you are given this opportunity! As much as I love the ghosts now guarding the books on my bookshelf, I do feel the experience was dampened slightly by this - although I'll certainly be back and highly recommend visiting to other people too...
J. C.
If you don't mind queuing this place is well worth a visit to pick up a ghostie.
D. P.
Love this original concept store, ordered online without any issues. Can’t wait to visit the shop in person and add to my collection
S. P.
Shop in the Shambles York. Get your ghost on. Unique individual ghosts delivered by train. You may have to queue but worth it & adds to the excitement & anticipation.
C. S.
Went with my 3 daughters and mum, had to queue to get in but didn't wait long, fantastic shop lots of ghosts to choose from every colour you can think off, and to have yo⅝ur ghost delivered to you in the shop on a tain brilliant , will definitely be visiting again ,
C. B.
Queued for an hour in the rain but what a lovely little enchanting shop. Full of ghostly figurines and quirky hiding holes in the walls service was excellent and your ghost is delivered by train!
P. H.
Amazing little shop! All hand painted with such character, a must visit if you are in York. Staff are super friendly...
K. F.
Gorgeous, quirky little place. The lady who greeted us was very accommodating and showed us around the massive selection of York ghosts. Absolutely love the little ghosts they make and sell on site. Will be purchasing one every time we visit.
S. W.
This shop us so quaint and beautifully themed. I absolutely loved the story behind the ghosts and the variety to choose from.
They're reasonably priced too plus the train ride to the front of the shop for our newest member of the family was the cherry on top of a lovely experience.
Thank you and we can't wait to add another to our collection when we visit at Christmas.
Edit - I came back the following day and bought a second one, they're just too adorable 😍
C. 1.
The ghosts are brilliant! They are abit overpriced in my opinion and I waited in queue for an hour and a half(to be expected)but atleast I can say I own 2 ghosts from the York merchant and I love them. 😊
E. S.
Absolutely amazing, obviously there was a long queue to get in, but it's well worth it for the magical and uniquely mystifying experience. Will definitely be going back next year!
M. B.
Long wait today but more than worth it. The staff do give you the option to buy outside too so there is an option to not need to queue.
D. C.
Amazing shop. Popped in for my sister whilst staying in York for the weekend. The staff were fantastic and couldn't do enough to help.
N. C.
I loved going here last year the ghosts are so unique and different there's little secrets throughout the shop would definitely recommend
L. F.
My sisters and I love spooky, bonding gifts and YGM felt kismet! I wanted a gift that felt uniquely York but still unique to our likes and these little ghosties fit the bill! Our stewardess to the other side told the origin story well and was generous with her time. Thanks from we three ghostly sisters!
N. S.
AMAZING. The customer experience is fantastic and the little ghosts are really cute - I got a big one and a little one. All the hidden places and photo opps are great too.
J. S.
my most favourite shop ever. I adore the staff - they are the best. they give the warmest welcomes every time. the shop is just SO unique and amazing. I love picking the ghosts out (as they have a range)!
highly recommend you give this shop a visit, couldn't put in to words how much I love it.
S. H.
Lovely friendly staff and we are very happy with our ghosts! There can be a bit of a wait but it's totally worth it.
M. M.
The shop, the staff, the experience and even the buzz of being in a queue whilst waiting for your new ghost is all what makes the visit here special.
The shambles as a location is perfect and the experience is a total treat.
W. A.
Wow. A must go to when you are in York. So spooky. The ghosts are so cute a large ghost Costa around £17
L. R.
Super unique little shop, staff are amazing and really add to the vibe of the shop
K. J.
Amazing little shop. Have seen it so many times but have always been put off by the queue. As there was only one family waiting, we joined. SO glad we did! The staff are incredible, really friendly and chatted away to our 9 year old while we waited. There are loads of hidden spaces in the shop for kids (and grown ups) to investigate. The ghosts aren't too expensive, we chose a large ghost and small which was £23. Your purchases are delivered to the front door on a little train (another big treat!). We always get a Christmas decoration when we visit York - think this will change to ghosts now!
S. K.
Amazing place great collection of ghosts, had to wait to get in but only for about 20 minutes, staff really friendly and reasonable priced
A. H.
Absolutely love this place!! I only have been twice, but my first experience kept me wanting to come back for a second time! I have a strong feeling that this will be a monthly thing for me - I'm so hooked!
The shop is quite quaint and discreet, so if it's your first time in the Shambles, you would easily be distracted by all the vibrant colours around. However, if you tread slowly along the alley, there's a whimsy to this place that just pulls you in.
Like all shops nowadays, they would politely ask you to queue and wait for your turn outside. They only allow 1 person or group to go in and browse within a reasonable amount of time. As you go in, there is also a sanitising station for guests to disinfect their hands.
The shop is quite small, but every corner and wall holds little surprises - shining a torch through a tiny hole in the wall can reveal amazing things! Also, the selection of ghosts - ohmy. I could stay there for hours and not make my mind up still on what to pick. Every single one is different, and the kind owner who I spoke to said that they usually represent good fortune for travellers.
Once you make your purchase, they deliver the boxed ghost via train (a little choochoo train) all the way back to the shop entrance - a thrilling sight for kids and kids at heart!
My recent visit was to purchase one of their limited edition Kraken ghosts, signed by the artist and entertained in store by the artist, too! Amazing! I miss the store already! Coming back for moreeeeee!!!
J.
Really cool shop, the experience is amazing! The staff are lovely, worth a visit.
J. B.
The York Ghost Merchants is tucked away at no 6 Shambles York This Shop is situated in one of the oldest Parts of York The Shambles.
York is renowned for its ghost and is regarded as the most haunted city in the World.
The ghosts in the shop are individual and unique though a little pricey at £17.00
Staff are very helpful and friendly and when you buy your ghost they carefully wrap and box, then place it on a train that's runs around the shop, for you to pick up your ghost at the entrance of The York Ghost Merchants.
C. R.
A very unique shop with a great experience to offer. Expect to be queuing for a little bit. Once you get in, the staff are very friendly and have a great character that matches the vibe of the store. As small as the store is, it still has quite a bit to offer, with little things to explore and plenty of ghost to pick and choose. This is a store you mudt visit when in York!
C. R.
Fantastic little shop, I already have train tickets booked to come back in December. The queues are very lengthy so I would recommend arriving early but it is worth it to go into the shop and to be able to choose any ghosts that you would like, especially when previously limited to the online monthly releases! The staff are friendly and welcoming and I can't think of a better location than the iconic, spooky Shambles for such a shop. If you get the chance please please go!
a.
Staff was so nice and the place was very inviting. The line getting in was a bit long and the inside can get crowded so keep that in mind
S. O.
Originally saw the que and wondered what the hype was, after doing some research it got me hooked, York is all about this and it was a great experience to buy into and very well done to what they have made
E. R.
Literally my favourite shop in York! It's incredible, all the gorgeous little ghosts are handmade, the staff goes above and beyond and it's such a wonderful experience to pick our your own little ghost. We come back here every single time we come back to York, it's amazing. An absolute must for anyone who loves anything spooky. Incredibly warm and welcoming little shop, so interactive and fun.
B. W.
the most amazing little shop you will ever visit we had the pleasure to do the ghost hunt which they host and OMG! It is the greatest evening you could wish for in a beautiful city. the staff go above and beyond for customers. Honestly can not express enough how much of an amazing company it is and how lucky you will be to go to this store it is one not one to be missed !!!
E. K. L.
Such a wonderful small store full of surprises, it is a unique concept!
If you are in York is a must to visit this place and maybe get a couple ghosts or even start your ghosts collection as I did.

A masterclass in customer service and experience. Staff were lovely. I now have 2 ghosts of my own (just 1 would be lonely!). There were so many neat little features, really brightened my day. Train was so cute! The ghosts now live on my shelf and fit right in, they seem very happy with their new home :)
l. b.
Yes there's a long queue but it is half-term and leading up to Halloween. The shop staff appeared to manage the queue best they could, politely and in an upfront way. Love my wee ghosties. Querky unique shop.
A. H.
Interesting! Having queued for 40mins finally got into the quaint shop ,did a goul call to me? I have to admit I was drawn to one which was a big surprise to me...the whole shop/assists were brilliant well run and no pushing in ..the queue was well managed by a very knowledgeable lady dressed in 'days of old' costume...yes I enjoyed the experience!! Meet Florence... .
R. R.
Great experience. Staff play the part well and the details are delightful with plenty of surprises!
J. W.
All of the staff are amazingly friendly, more than happy to help and have an amazing character, the merchants and their staff team are always happy to see you, always conduct themselves with the utmost decorum and they always make the experience of visiting the shop a memorable one.
Kind Mr, Mrs, Miss, Masters, sirs and madam's you are all amazing, thank you for your service.
_.
Such a cute and unique shop. Great customer service
J. L.
Love this place! Super quirky, gorgeous place. Always make sure we get a little ghost when we visit york 👻
S.
Long queue but a unique and worthwhile experience. Love my little ghost.
J. M.
Wonderful shop, tho prepare to queue. Browsing is definitely worth it, as the whole shop is themed and done up gorgeously, and the staff are doing an amazing job creating atmosphere. If you know exactly what you're there for (the Christmas ornament for example, which is particularly cute this year) the staff may be able to bring out a few on a tray for you to select from, and then bring out the remote card machine so you can get your ghost and go, without waiting in the queue for ages.
M. M.
Such a cute little place to visit if you're in York. The ghosts are all hand made and delivered to you by a miniature train which rides round the store.
S. T.
Always an absolute delight to visit this unique shop. The original ' merchants' are so welcoming...check our the not so secret cupboard behind the painting ...look through the crack in the wall... watch your newly adopted ghost take a ride on the train after your purchase...such a complete treat every time you visit. You will return time and again ...its a fabulous destination...
S. P.
Queues very long on both days, didn't get to enter the shop but the window display is impressive. Quirky ghosts, ended up ordering online, but that process is a bit odd as they don't have the traditional online shop, they release a few designs possibly once a week 7pm on Friday, and occasional rare spectors. They post online purchases once a week only on a Friday. I unfortunately had to chase my online purchase had a quick response to my email advising that due to a shortage of boxes they are confident my order would be with me by 27th September, that will be nearly a month since purchasing.
M. G.
My wife and I found this shop while walking around York over the weekend. We purchased a small ghost to go with our international collection of memories and loved the store (and ghost) so much we went back to buy two more!
This is a must visit store. The ghosts are interesting and the entertainment valued and experience of the store will create memories (and stories) for years to come!
Boo!
G. F.
How can anyone not fall in love with this shop. There's not too many Ghost Merchants around, but if you're only going to visit one then I would recommend this on!
J.
Visited today with my partner during our day trip to York.
Visited simply out of curiosity for the unique store front with no idea what the shop was.
We were both instantly welcomed by the person working who explained in detail what the ghosts were and the history behind them. Was a great experience, much more than just a shop in my opinion with interactive displays and a little area to take photos of your ghost!
We left as the happy owners of four of their ghosts and a surprisingly great experience to look back on.
Thank you!
H. T. (. X.
The York Ghost Merchants were absolutely amazing. They saw we had arrived early and were more than happy to have a chat with us about the shop, the history and the ethos behind what they do. Once we were in, the range was vast and the shelves fully stocked. If we had something in mind, they were more than happy to check for us! I cannot recommend the shop more highly and the staff were knowledgeable and friendly. I fully intend to visit again in the future.
J. B.
Such a cute little shop and the lady who works there puts in effort to everything, including giving you your ghost via a tiny steam train to the door and having the option for a tiny photoshoot. Loved it.
A. T.
We visited this store by chance in April, on our visit down the Shambles in York. We were really impressed with the customer service, the quality of unique ghosts on display, as well as the patience of the staff here. We ended up buying two little ghosts and, after some more wandering, decided to return and buy two more for our friends and family in NZ. Would highly recommend this beautiful store and it's wonderful curators, thank you for such a lovely experience; visiting the York Ghost Merchants was a highlight of our trip!
M.
Me and my boyfriend absolutely love this place. First time visiting York and it's definitely our favourite place. The guy who served us was absolutely lovely, we didn't expect the experience we had. Told us a bit about the origin of the ghosts, showed us all the cool interactive bits. Not only is it such a unique shop but
the experience itself was really fun. We left the shop with a original and three boo's! Thank you to the guy who was showing us everything! We will be back!
J. H.
First time I have visited here and what a unique, quirky and a memorable way of remembering my visit to York.
The quality of these ghost products and the story behind the concept is great and the variety of thes ghost keepsakes is amazing. The shop gives the feel of care and devotion to these collectibles and their quality shimmers through. Although busy with customers awaiting turns to visit shop, time was still afforded to chat about product and to view available items. After my initial visit, I returned to purchase more a few hours later as the are great items and hope to build a collection and carry on building a display.
A. C.
Really lovely shop and a great place to buy a little souvenir of York City! So nice to see a shop that sells unique gifts. When we went in to choose our ghost the chap on the shop was super lovely and made it a really fun experience. We also know families with younger kids who have loved the little fun additions to the shop such as the ghost train and peep holes!
M. W.
Huge queue was not expected but just shows how popularit is, and with 2 children one of whom is autistic and really was desperate to have a look at the shop, realised we would not be able to make it in. However David the owner brought out 2 little ragamuffin ghosts for the girls. This was so kind of him and made our trip to York very special. Thank you
T. E.
Great unique little shop, just a shame about the hour long queue to get inside. Just as well it was a nice day.
C. “.
York has more than its fair share of unique attractions, but this has to be the most unique. It's quite eery, in a wonderful way, and the finishing touches, when choosing the right ghost for yourself makes it a most memorable experience. Please pay a visit... Every York Ghost needs a home to haunt!
D. V.
If you're looking for a ghost, you'll find everything you need here. Each ghost is handmade and unique. And the in shop experience is unbelievable. We queued 90 minutes, but totally worth it!
C. N.
Charming shop with friendly staff. There was more of an experience to be had than just choosing your ghost, but the current 4 person Covid - 19 limit and the large queue outside meant we felt like we should just get on and shop. Hardly the fault of the owners - in fact, thanks for keeping us safe.
We will be back, hopefully post Covid, and will feel able to enjoy the full experience next time.
A. A.
The merchants are in amazing clothing brining the old York into the new era.
All the staff are lovely and will help you with a smile.although queues can be annoying the shop is well worth the visit with its secrets and ghosts
E. Y.
Lovely little shop that you just have to be in awe of, very friendly welcome when you walk in through the door, and a nice little explain room of the meaning of the Ghosts. There’s hundreds of ghosts to choose from, all hand made and individual, and reasonably priced, there are even ghosts hiding in the walls, and in various secret places around the shop. Extremely cute and the sort of shop that suits York’s history, would highly recommend if you are looking for a little reminder of this great city.
D. T.
Such cute little figures, a must have collectable from the City of York. What an atmosphere from the whole vacinity and a buzzing market at hand. Plenty of artisan shops to explore. You can find the York Ghost Merchants at the foot of the queue of people eager to purchase these querky apparitions 👻
G. s.
Slight que to get in when it's busy, but loved picking out a ghost, there's so many too choose from and all individually handpainted. The staff are in period clothing and the shop has original features. The big ghosts are £15 and the smaller ones are £8 .
T. Q.
Quirky little shop if you don't mind queueing when it's busy. Enjoyable experience, everyone needs a little ghosty. Still waiting for my bowler hat for helping with the queue 😏
B. L.
A brilliant place, there is a bit of a queue, but definitely worth the wait
s. t.
This shop is amazing and what makes it more amazing is the owner and dedicated staff. We met the manager outside talking to the public who were waiting in the cue he was upset that he had to turn people away because of how big the cue is and he was upset at doing this, he said he just wants to people to be happy.
M. M.
Lovely little shop, friendly staff and interesting decorations. Love my Ghost 👻
T. H.
Lovely shop, massive queue to get in staff very nice and helpful

K. R.
Amazing shop.Excellent customer service, the staff are sooooo nice, helpful and friendly.
R. K.
I preferred it to going at Halloween as the queues we less bad. Staff very friendly and helpful.
L. S.
Absolutely love the York ghost merchants, even though I had to que for an hour to get in
K. S.
Incredible little shop im not ashamed to say I made a 115 mile trip to come and vist this place. We where instantly made to feel welcome and given plenty of time to choose our little ghosts. The guy running the shop was awesome he gave us a little back story and was really just incredibly helpful.
We will be back for more ghosts 👻 May be a bit of a obsession now 😂
A. B.
Great shop, fantastic tourist attraction, worth the visit.
N. J.
Love this shop staff are fantastic very helpful amd cheerful
K. H.
Such a lovely shop set on a cute cobbled street in York. It's a small shop however if like me you are in a wheel chair they go all out to help if they can. And they do hand out umbrella's if needed like they were today.
C. O.
Great shop beautiful and a fabulous product but visit the store don't bother with online it is the most frustrating experience ever on several occasions its website has been processing payment then stopped and sold out while processing, I've then had the payment authorisation sat on my credit card but no order. Same again today twice I've sat refreshing the page got it to payment processing and while it's processing it stops and no stock the website sells out in seconds and you stand absolutely no chance of getting one, it's a great product and store but the websites model is poor.
Edit.
I feel I have been unfair as the shop state they are founded on good old fashioned principles and it adds to the joys of the ghosts, mass production would ruin the charm the shop and people are lovely and I find I'm juat so very frustrated with the online release maybe if the website reserved your ghost for 60seconds while you check out that would function better but please don't change the product is fantastic as is the store its just the online process that's frustrating.
S. W.
What a brilliant idea. Each and every ghost is unique. The girl in store was so friendly and chatty. Definitely something to collect each time we visit. Hope this shop has a long life. Worth a visit
Y. J.
Great place visit staff lovely daughter loved picking ghost
L. T.
We were there early to queue for it opening. It gets very busy and hour and more queuing times can be expected as we experienced the day before one Happy daughter though
A. F.

S. B.
Best shop in the world ever, run by the best people in the world ever selling the best ghosts ever.
R. K.
Shop full of character , friendly and helpful staff, great ghost. But queuing times were atrocious. 1.5 hours as people were encouraged to take their time despite lots of others waiting outside in bad weather. Not ideal.
M. C.
Quirky little shop, usually with a huge queue to get in, if you can avoid Saturdays or even Sundays then you’ll be better off.
a. n.

All products are naturally unique. I bought 4.
The staff are lovely.
I think they could make flat ghosts for pendents
R. S.
Great shop, and as it is restricted to only four in at any one time at the moment, it does improve the experience. The ghosts are all incredible and I will be going back to buy more.
S. S.

Well worth the wait in the queue, got to see a fantastic shop. The lady and gent (both had blonde hair) were super enthusiastic and helpful.
Only downside was the guy sorting the queue (had a hat with a peacock feather in) spoke a bit rudely to myself and other people waiting, but I still had a great experience once inside the shop!
T. L.
Very cute and worth a visit. Of course the earlier you come in line the better
B. L.
Loving my new family of phantom ghosties!! Staff are friendly & fun, shop & costumes are fab. We walked past the queue on our first day wondering what it was about, we looked at the Instagram & loved the attention to detail & the overall theme of the ghost merchants. Nice memory to display!
S. C.
Loved this place. Hated waiting an hour and a half in line, but staff ran everything efficiently and it was fun people watching time in the Shambles. Ultimately the wait was worth it because once you get inside it is a really cool experience like nothing else. Will do this again when I'm in York
S. N.
Fantastic this Really completed our little Trip to York wonderful ♥️💯♥️👻
e. R.
An incredible experience. Staff were super friendly and fun, shout out to Mr.W in particular who was the first member of staff we spoke to who made us feel welcome and that we were in the right place... at the back of a very long queue, but absolutely worth the wait! Really entertaining staff and even better product, I adore my little ghosts 🖤
S. C.
Was dying to get into the shop ever since my friend mentioned it. Staff were so friendly and helpful and the products were so amazing and unique. Purchased a large phantom and two smaller ghosts for my kids. Loved it. There is literally a que around the street so the best advice is get there before opening time to start quing. We qued for about 1.5hrs, some people had qued longer - but if you're wanting to get in then the wait is worth it
