Reviews of Central Arcade
Nice old fashioned building. Has a few small shops that have changed lots over the last 10 years then on the other side is windows the music store. Love this place but can't play any instruments well enough to want to buy them.
Nice selection of high Street retailers plus a couple of local producers such as a gin shop. And a great local coffee shop. Piped music (not too loud!) and outdoor seating to enjoy coffee or cocktails in the run!
Still busy with businesses and an excellent music shop windows. Nice, dry and safe place.
I love ambience and it's distinctive look along with the range of shops over a great shortcut in the rain.
Absolutely beautiful structure well worth seeing, there's a fabulous music shop inside too. Sad to see some empty shops but hopefully will fill back up soon!
Great historic shopping arcade. Worth a trip even if your not visiting a store. Local tip: look up!
Such a beautiful old arcade with lovely Edwardian architecture. Sad to see vacant shops in the arcade. Clearly impacted just like the local high streets.
If you enjoy the built environment, just walk through here and look around at the incredible craftsmanship of the arcade...plus it has j g windows music shop...a fantastic place for players and listeners alike
Beautiful architecture. I love looking at the amazing tiles and columns, with that gorgeous glass roof overhead.
Just walking through gives me a boost I've loved this place for many many year's Y that's another thought but one thing is just loving walking through and all my memories return
Beautiful arcade that's mainly made up by a musical instrument store. Nice cut from grey to grainger st when it's open
To be honest, I'm not exactly sure which bit is "central arcade"? We got off the Metro from South Gosforth and headed to AskItalian. Central arcade must be somewhere along the way..
Much more character than the huge boring ships malls a beautiful place lovely old architecture .
Beautiful arcade nationally important in architecture. The glazed tile interior changes as the light shifts during the day. There are some shops open but it's worth going just to see it.
Long walked though to have a look. But looks lush to walk though. Reminds me when I was younger walking though with my sisters.
Beautiful architecture in the heart if the city well worth a visit
Amazing architecture, everything looks nice: from the floors to the pillars. Great place for a selfie! There is a quiet Starbucks too that is good for some relax in between errands
Beautiful architecture makes this little shopping arcade something very special.
Very beautiful architecture but I didn't shop here
Good old fashioned market with loads of stalls including wholefood, butcher, coffee, clothes, books. Wide range of goods
Not many places like this still exist! It's the home of the North's leading music shop: Windows.
I maintained this building for years, nice nice coming back and seeing it
Its our Ancient Windows Arcade, Buskers paradise since 60s* Beatles came in here 1961 to buy Guitar strings, and onto a gig in Durham, 😃✌Love the place, been a pitch of mine since 1985 sounds fab! Enjoy
Great place to visit when visiting Central Newcastle. Fabulous building and historic music shop!
Tremendous architectural gem in the centre of Newcastle. Beautiful stonework, detailing and light falling into mosaic filled walkway. Has had interesting shops occupying it's units over the years. The best of which has to be JG Windows a genuine shop for musicians andd music lovers. Don't miss this stunning little piece of urban history in the city centre.
This one is a tough one cos it's well placed. But the low ceiling and lack of artificial light make you feel closed in and the air is sickly. You'll get hot and bothered and want to get out into the freshness of the outside world.
Great place to peruse if you have any spare time
Nice building, but dowdy shops
A gave central arcade 5 stars as its nice so clean lovely shops to look at like me and to even do a bit shopping for yourselves are a present for who ever yous like but to be honest a really lovely place to visit if you are in town so take it of me you will really enjoy yourself like a did so my email is on here somewhere please let .e no how good you enjoyed Central arcade okay takecare william 👌
A very must location to walk through if wanting to take images when in Newcastle
Its small, but it's stunning architecture and part of Newcastles history. Never allow this place to change.
Windows music shop in the arcade is well worth a visit and if you want a generic coffee Starbucks has an entrance there. Not a fan of Starbucks myself, but many are.
Great little Arcade plenty of choice under one roof
A great place to shop & browse, totally recommend.
Great shop selling vinyl and instruments.
Don't use it can't say anything about it apart from architecture which is outstanding
Worth going in just to see the decor! The music shop is really good aswell.
First time ever in Newcastle, really enjoyed it, made better with the incredible weather, the centre was buzzing with uni student's finally getting to dress up in robes for the day after finally getting their degree's, real eye opener of a place.
Lovely place to go, fully recommend.
Unbelievable tiling, well worth the visit to view
A variety of shops . From hardware to crafts. And plenty of places to eat .
Wonderful architecture.... Even if the stores are somewhat limited
Got some manga for a decent price
Amazing arcade real Victorian look, not many shops open i think due to covid, but well worth a walk through
Being going since the 60tys always welcoming
Central Arcade has been a feature of Newcastle Upon Tyne city center and contains a number of retail establishments which have been there for many years including Windows which is the go to place for anything to do with music or musical instruments and equipment. However in recent times there have been a lot of changes all round in the name of progress but that is a moot point.
Nice architecture and is a nice small short cut and has a few stores worth visiting such as JD windows if you play instruments
Nothing much in there, it is worth visiting as it's a beautiful and unusual building
It is undergoing some renovation at the moment but you can still get around all of the stalls/shops/cafés.
Fantastic old arcade in the centre of Newcastle
Shops in an arcade environment. Food, clothing, jewellery, gaming electronic products etc.
One of the best buildings in the centre of Newcastle so probably on a demolition list at Newcastle City Council they wreck everything they touch, who elected these plonkers?
A beautiful building for music instrument shops...
It's a lovely place to walk through. Nice and quiet very clean and pleasant.
Just walked through it this morning and it was good to see such places are being preserved as an important piece of our heritage, nice to see Newcastles city centre is surviving better than most.
A fabulous place great shops of all types, undercover wide walkways,Lots and lots of different eating places ,from afternoon tea at Fenwick's to fish and chips ect,Well worth a visit to spend a few hours All Çovid safety rules in all of the Arcade.
Great food department prices vary and some are crazy ,but if you want something special you can get it
Haha the good music shop
Good selection of stores
Lovely area to shop small shops thriving in here are quality
An amazing experience - a traditional indoor arcade containing "Windows" the music shop. A must see for anyone in central Newcastle.
Old world arcade. Windows store in arcade. Well established. Used to have choir singers at Christmas. Hopefully they will again after the "heat" is out of this pandemic
The Central Arcade is worth stepping inside if you are in the heart of Newcastle. This airy Edwardian gem is one of many buildings in the city that are easy on the eye.
Very clean at this moment in Time and although this covid 19 is still playing a huge part in our daily lives .. people are coming together and being polite and very friendly!! The staff as always are very pleased and always have a welcoming smile for you ...
This is a lovely building which was built by Grainger in the Tyneside Classical style during his work in the city centre in 1838. The interior has had a few uses starting out as a corn exchange and then being used as a theatre and art gallery. It was remodelled into the current arcade in 1906 by local architects. The interior is very beautiful and in a late Victorian/Edwardian style. Worth a walk through if you're in town as it's a very unique building and houses JG Windows music shop which has been there almost as long as the arcade has existed.
Beautiful and close to metro station
Great historic place, though would be nice to see more stores take advantage of the location.
A quite classically beautiful Edwardian shopping arcade. Not very big, but very photogenic! It's preserved really as a Grade II* listed structure. Legendary Newcastle shop JG Windows music shop is resident.
I always love a visit to JG Windows, the music shop, who have been here for decades. The actual Arcade was once a place for Victorian concerts and public lectures & it still has that old-fashioned charm. Makes you feel like you're in an old, unspoiled part of the town hidden right in the centre.
These days this is mainly J D Windows music shop which sells everything from tin whistles to pianos. The arcade is however much more. If you look up the interior is an example of the tiles art.
Beautiful old style arcade. Probably destined to be one of them awful Neo Brutalist buildings that the developers and the council are fond of.
Beautiful Arcade from a bygone era
Wet Monday but great
Lovely architectural building and has great shops. Well worth a visit.
Beautiful architecture :Unlike Leeds, Newcastle demolished and 'improved' most of its old arcades - enjoy this one while you can...
Lot of great shops
The machines are all tampered with to reel slip when you're playing them I hit the jackpot of 50 pounds but the reel slipped and I called the staff member over how came back and said that they don't pay out for reel slips all I got was a complementary 20 off them.
The Central Arcade is s magnificent piece of architecture it was built in 1908 and apart from shopping is a must for tourists. Windows the shop in the photo had been in the arcade since it was built. It is a shop of music ....instruments and now modern CDs etc. Catherine Kidson and Starbucks but the arcade is well worth a visit .....step back into Edwardian architecture. Newcastle had lots of beautiful buildings. It hosts the largest private library outside of London
Best looking mall in the town. Not a massive selection of shops but windows is the best shop in town anyways so it's a great place I visit weekly.
Not much to see inside apart from Windows which is a music and instruments mecca - well worth a visit. The arcade itself is a beautiful old Victorian building and worth a look in itself however
A beautiful shopping centre with everything I could need in one place. Easy access and clean. They are Covid ready with masks and sanitised within easy reach. Pleantly of places to eat and easy access by bus train or car 👍👍
The ambience remains magnificent
Best looking shopping experience in town. If you're after vinyl or guitars you can't go wrong with Windows. It's a million times better than it ever has been before.
Good place to find things that you can't find another shops
A centre for buying musical instruments
Great shopping experience
Music shop is the best and some knowledge too
Victorian tiled arcade with specialist shops. Windows is a long-established music shop.
Part subject to building work but businesses still open.
Beautiful architecture, worth a visit if you're in town
Love it
Never hit the town without visiting
Just walked through ut always looks grand 👌
Love it here. A beautiful oasis in the centre of town. Home to the great music shop Windows.
This is a must for any visitors to Newcastle, the architecture inside is stunning and windows music is the best collection of instruments and music in the north east!
Opened in 1906 a small selection of bespoke shops in a arcade awaited eager buyers in newcastle...now. 114 years later all that remains is 1 shop and that being 'JG windows' music store ..been there for as long as i can remember...its a one stop shop for everything any anything music wise..but be warned prices arnt from 114 years ago lol...grand piano in the main window was 24,000 pound...fantastic to look at but not many folks will have that kinda cash...anyway the arcade it self is largely original...worth a visit for the originality
Love the central arcade for its design also for windows record shop holds
Some good memories for me 🙂there is a certain magic about this arcade
Love Central Arcade. It is a small walk threw with Windows Arcade Music Store inside. It is a historic building which is beautifully kept. It has other shops. Neals Yard. Kath Kidson to name but two. A hidden gem worth a visit.
A local gem of a place in Newcastle City centre well worth a look for the historic decor Mainly has a music shop inside but limited number of shops
Bustling City Centre due to the Christmas street Market. Great atmosphere. My only criticism is the availability of public toilets. Food one in the restaurant mall.
Very original place to Newcastle great music shop unfortunately no Marcus Price anymore but still attracting a good type off outlet's good for area.
Stunning architecture and really well maintained. Lovely to walk through and ideally placed fir a days shopping and next to all public transport
Very helpful with mobility discount tickets
It's ok
Whenever I come to Newcastle I visit Windows. I love looking at the musical instruments, sheet music and cds. I often make purchases, the biggest was a Fender Telecaster guitar three years ago.
It is so iconic & holds so many happy memories for me, from my youth...Saturday afternoons sifting through LP's, downstairs in Widows👌Happy days 😁
This small but exquisite Victorian arcade is one of the finest historic buildings in the North East of England. The stained glass ceiling and the tiny mosaic tiled floor is absolutely stunning. The trippy colours are simply gorgeous. This is a unique building that is always kept immaculately clean and well preserved. Personally I think it's the most beautiful building on Tyneside. It houses several interesting shops the main one being JG Windows an expensive but very classy music store that sells all kinds of musical instruments, sterios as well as Vinyl records, DVDs and CDs. It's worth a walk around even if you don't intend to buy anything.
Beautiful place if you have 3k above to buy a piano i just like walking through it, nice shopping centre.
Lovely historic Arcade. Nice shops. Always immaculately clean and well looked after. Right next to Greys Monument in Newcastle town centre. Also moments walk away from the Monument Metro Station and plenty local bus services only a few moments walk away. Near the Tyne Theatre. Lots of restaurants. Eldon Square shoping centre is literally on its door step along with Northumberland Street.
Wonderful old Victorian arcade in fantastic condition worth a visit in its own right but some good stores in it too... including the legendary Windows music shop
Walked through arcade to admire the shops and architecture, well worth a visit, will try the shops next time
Not really functioning cos of the lockdown but if you wanna feed your eyes, it is a place to be.
Just it seems to lack atmosphere lovely and clean
Friendly helpful staff, room excellent, food good and price reasonable.
Right in the heart of the city centre, smaller bespoke shops rather than the usual high street
Great choice of food, but not enough checkouts on when it's busy!! 😏
Didn't buy today
What an amazing building, the ornate decor inside is some of the finest in Newcastle. The shops may come and go but this place is a real gem in the heart of the city
Big and has lots of shops inside, something for everyone
Well presented shops selling a variety of products pains me to say it being from sunderland but Newcastle is a much better place to shop
Beautiful architecture, very well kept and tidy, nice selection of shops too.
Really nice place but a wasted opportunity here so much more to this arcade that's not getting used like the old exchange hotel which could be converted into an extention of the arcade to provide more shopping areas
fun place
Great selection of shops so keeps wife happy
Stunning architecture in the city centre which houses J. G Windows, where Mark Knopfler got his first ever guitar.
An amazing little arcade at the heart of the city. Very small not anywhere near the ones in Leeds but yet beautiful.
Good range of shops
Windows is a great store for anything music related!
Has not changed for years
Great place for quality items, nice gifts.
Windows for easy shopping of CDs and videos. No crowds. Got a great old feel about it.
It was OK the town is not what it used to be really run down and tattie
The Central Arcade is situated in the Exchange Buildings: " ..a grand triangular composition between Market Street, Grey Street and Grainger Street, probably designed by Wardle, and built by Grainger c1837 as the Central Exchange and News Rooms. The three corners are rounded with ribbed domes on emphatic columned drums. Nash's London schemes seem to have been the inspiration for the composition (West Strand improvements of the 1830s) and for the finials of bronze feathers on each dome( Sussex Place of 1822). The Central Arcade, with its glorious profusion of yellow and brown faience, was cut through in 1906 by J.Oswald & Sons; paving by Rust's Vitreous Mosaics of Battersea." ( Sir Nikolaus Pevsner et al " The Buildings of England").
The Arcade is home to J.G. Windows, the finest music shop in the North of England and from whom I purchased my guitar and sheet music as well as many LPs, cassettes and CDs over a period of many years; long may they thrive.
Such a lush little arcade. Has a great music shop in too!!
different shopping experience
Not slot of shops but the tiling on the walls is beautiful
Excellent set up
Just love heading there from Sunderland very cheap prices
Pleasant but not a huge array of shops

Very beautiful place. Clean and old place we love it
Beautiful part of the town, we're lucky to have it based on the loss of other parts of Newcastle, like the Handyside Arcade. Worth a regular visit
Not as full of life as it used to be but such a beautiful place.
Hadn't been for years but realised not much if anything had changed lovely Victorian buildings
The architecture and design on the walls and floor is brilliant. Whether you're shopping or not, it's worth visiting.
Very beautiful architecture, love it! I have to pass by whenever I'm town
Theres lots to like about the arcade and how some of the shops are local or not on the high street however the shops which are unique are very small and parking is a struggle
I like the Central arcade. Windows record shop has been there for ever, it's a shop where over the years I have spent quite a lot of money.
Beautiful building & Windows is a fantastic shop
A lovely place to take a walk, especially in December. There are just a few shops in the Arcade so don't expect too much shopping.
Lovely quaint little shops

It's a great place to be its were i bought a lot of music from etc.
Most of the shops still here, I don't use. It has seen better days.
Very small arcade but this was a mini equivalent to the modern day shopping centre and has been here for absolutely years. Everybody in the North East has heard of this place.
Shopping in a little bit of history love going in just to admirer the building as a whole a great bit of victorian architecture and still as it was built if memory serves me right
Lovely old arcade with fantastic detailing, windows is a great music store.
Very nice place, clean and tidy, never to busy, and very nice architecture, great place if you're into photography
