Reviews of The Royal Arcade
S.
If you make it to Norwich, seeing the Royal Arcade after touring the castle is a must. Everything about this town has its own character. Every curve of every beam, and every cobblestone street. I couldn’t even tell you the shops that are in the Arcade, because I was too busy admiring the beauty of it all. I could walk around this town forever and still feel like I hadn’t seen it all. So glad I was able to stop in and see this beautiful place!
A. v.
Specially recommend for Art lover. There is so many shop they famous for Art products. And overall nice place to visit
T. G.
Pretty little walkthrough and some nice little shops if you want to get out of the rain or cold for abit it's rather handy too.
R. S.
Beautiful building and flooring. The setting is a little sad, with both ends not having the same glamour as the building. Empty shops also don't help.
K. D.
This is nice and quite old buildings with lots of options to shop. All the shops are unique and old. However shops are less specious and bit old. Seems like old market.
O. S.
A haven for lovers of independent shops, Art Nouveau & George Skipper's architecture, model planes & trains, footwear & sportswear, fine cafes, stationary & cards, jewellery, macaroons, pictures & prints and shortcuts.
R. R.
This has been one of my favourite places in the city centre since I was a small child. The design and detail always amazed me and the unique little shops. Some of those shops still remain but sadly most have closed down and a lot of empty units but still worth a visit for the architecture.
I. S.
Beautiful place. Have seen Handmade chocolate shop, macarons shop,a café where you can have a coffee...
J. S.
Nothing much here anymore I'm afraid, just a way in and out of an area.
M. Y.
Individual shops but a few empty ones, I was expecting more than one arcade but nice to walk through
L. S.
Magical, with original shops, galleries, antiques and lots more. Sadly, I have given 4 stars as several shops are vacant which spoils the experience, slightly. Still, rather a few empty shops than a soleless sprawl of chainstores under one roof. This arcade is charming and deserves support for the local independent businesses.
C. C.
Hadn't been for a couple of years, building is still beautiful, shops are trying to bring it back to former glory. Give it a chance. Worth a visit.
D. M.
I personally use it as a quick cut through, there are shops there that some people might like to shop at and there is a little cafe you can sit outside and relax.
E. E.
A grandeur place, beautiful structure. Have few interesting shops though few good brands already closed aggrevated by pandemic. The place is still magnificent as it is.
D. H.
Very nice small shops.
B. H.
The review Im leaving is purely on the presentation of the arcade and my use of the shop ranges in it (or lack off)
The arcade is a nice looking place and has a certain quirk to it which appeals, however over the years it has starting dropping its selection of shops or appears to have less places open.
The lower rating I am providing is because the range of shops there aren't of interest to myself. However some of the places I do use and I have never had a problem with them.
L. M.
Beautiful, grande, old fashioned. A mix of place to eat, art, jewellery and macaroons....
K. S.
Beautiful building and lots of interesting shops. A few things have closed down this past year, but I'm sure the empty shops will be filled soon.
t.

B. G.
Nice old world shopping arcade. Good to see shops are becoming occupied again after a lean spell.
L. C.
I always love going to the arcade its got beautiful shops in thier and theres a little cafe inside as well. Plus it did have Langleys but that's gone. There now a chocolate show a small one in there too. Shoe shop I believe for kids/children but not sure if that's still open. Macaroon shop at the end near the old Jamie's Italian which is also gone. Just about 3 or 4 shops open at the Royal arcade. It's peaceful to in there not many people go through in the evening but more during the day. Around Norwich we have as well the dinosaurs 🦕 scattered around so go go dinosaurs 🦕. Not far from the Norwich castle museum either just across the road. If you like your history or art, animal not alive but stuffed. My favourite in there is the bear 🐻 Asiant Egyptian with a mummy in its box too in the museum. There's also a teapot area too with a 1000 or more teapot from probably around the world. Even have Norwich dungeons as well. So many things to do near by
M. C.
An important part of Norwich architectural history, the Royal Arcade is always worth a visit just to look at it's design features and artistic elements. You mat also find a shop that offers you something you need too.
C. M.
It's got to be said that the Arcade is looking a bit sad these days with quite a few empty units. However, if you can't find the shop of your dreams there, at least look up and marvel at the Doulton (Lambeth) polychrome tiles from c.1900.
T. W.
Always nice to see the arcade been there for years great for Norwich
S. T.
Unfortunately though several premises here have now ceased trading this is an absolutely gorgeous arcade - full of atmosphere and charm
j. c.
Lovely place but no shops in there.
I. M.
Lovely part of Norwich, seems miles apart from modern malls etc,and Marmalades the coffee shop is out of this world
B. F.
A beautiful place that needs an injection of new business, this place could be the food centre of Norwich on a shopping trip our.
Note to new owners - fill those units fast
Still give it 9/10 as it's such a lovely place.
D. M.
Got to love a good arcade. There are always quirky shops, and this one is no different
S. R.
Only walked through, love the gallery and chocolate shop. Alas colmans mustard is no more.
B. C.
Interesting architecture and ambience. Some trendy up market shops but a few empty units perhaps the costs are high?
N. L.
Lovely atmosphere - like taking a step back in time.
J. O.
A quick walk through didn't stop to shop
A. M.
Very ornate a few shops too x
G. G.
It's adequate, the toy shop and art gallery are the only decent shops inside the arcade, but I don't think it should be described as a shopping centre. It's more of an open hallway between streets. It's clean and the decor is great, but some of the shops are wasted and useless.
G. B.
Beautiful arcade with stunning architecture. Such a shame so many empty shops. Hopefully with new owners this will improve. Iconic part of Norwich.
d. p.
looks royal but no arcade so that's a down point
S. R.
It's ok. Some empty shops and it's lost its spark. We use it for a cut through now rather than a place to shop.
I. J.
A beautiful Edwardian arcade.
It's a delightful stroll through the arcade, resplendent with Edwardian architecture and an Arts and Crafts influenced floor.
Sadly, either the landlords are too greedy, Covid is having a terrible impact on our nation of shopkeepers or hidden development plans are afoot, as many units lie empty. This is a shame, as this would be a really lovely shopping experience otherwise.
M. F.
Sad, very sad. At the time of this visit only 3 shops open. For it's history, beauty and memories it scores 5 🌟's. The toy shop Langleys was the first store we visited following alighting the bus at the back of Bonds, walking quickly past Curls and down towards the Market to the Royal Arcade. Then off to Woolworths in Rampant Horse St for lunch!!
A. B.
Still nice but to many shops empty
I. C.
Is a beautiful street with 3- 4 good brand shops and a amazing short cross to Norwich center.
M. C.
It's a bit run down now especially since Digby (the chocolates shop) left and Langleys is sadly reduced. Marmalades really doesn't cut it as the main attraction...
M. B.
A lovely stroll to browse.
D. “. C.
I had a Caramel Hot Chocolate with Cream in Starbucks and popped in to Select for a look before going to work.
T. M.
It's currently emptier than I can ever remember it being, but what a beautiful building! It was such a shame when Langley's moved out, when Digby's shuttered is doors, when Jamie's replaced Waterstone's and even when Jamie's closed, but the beautiful structure and majestic presence of this historic glass-roofed arcade is, as always, breath taking. Take a stroll through, have a cup of coffee, but some mustard even. Perhaps view some local art, depending on what's there, but do visit at least once if you're in Norwich.
D. L.
A beautiful space that sits between the market and the castle. Unfortunately, Covid has put pay to many of the businesses that were here. Fingers crossed that it recovers.
K.
The Royal Arcade is a beautiful part of Norwich. The shops have changed over the years. But Marmalades is a must for a coffee/tea/beverage or light snacks. And as of today Langley's toy shop has separated (I believe the toys are now in the nearby Chantry Place shopping mall. So you have a fantastic dedicated board game/ hobby shop in there now!
K. G.
The place has gone down in my evaluation shops empty and blame is on covid
J. S.
Beautiful 19th century shopping arcade in the centre of Norwich. A few of the ships have unfortunately closed since the beginning of lockdown, but the arcade is still as beautiful as ever. Would definitely recommend visiting over Christmas to see the decorations.
S. A.
If you are here dont miss Marmalade
E. S.
Nice detailing inside the building with a good selection of shops inside lady b is the best shop in their if you like vintage clothing
G. G.
Mostly empty of shops atm and dangerously slippery in wet conditions. The shops that do exist are pretty and the cafe/model workshop may be the best in town according to local opinion.
D. H.
Love popping into Artique, always friendly and the staff can talk art all day long. New pieces in every Thursday so you can always see new pieces.
S. T.
Marmalades coffee shop, lots of nice eats.
S.
Had a lovely walk through the arcade. I found Norwich a beautiful place, with friendly people.
L. M.
An architectural gem in the heart of Norwich. Seeing it during the covid pandemic in 2021 it has clearly suffered from closures. Norwich would be wise to recognise it as a major plus for the city and encourage cafes and interesting ….maybe luxury….shops/galleries to open there.
K. R.
Suffering the effects of the pandemic with a fair number of empty shops but clean and inviting.
D. W.
Most of the shops are vacant at the moment. Always enjoy the swinging monkey in the shoe shop window.
C. J.
Lovely place and all dressed up for Christmas, indulging in the cake shop every now and then
C. P.
OK, very good 👍
S. H.
So beautiful to walk through it does need more shops but I just go to look at the art deco setting.
P. S.
An architectural gem in Norwich. A must see
P. G.
There is no businesses open in the royal arcade at the moment due to Covid however you can walk through it I started thinking to myself what a shame for all the people that work in here who are losing there income.however when things get back to normal there is a childrens toy shop called langleys there is also a cafe called marmalade and clothing shops and various other types of shops in here.
T. M.
Although my favourite shop has now closed (Digbys) it does offer so lovely shops inside, I do like the Macaron shop and there is now an artisan chocolate shop
K. J.
Would love to see more independent shops in here..anything. Marmalades is awesome, simple but tasty menu and great staff.
S. M.
Really nice place to shop, very relaxed atmosphere good selection of shops.
J. S.
Visually stunning building with some wonderful shops. I just wish they still had Coleman's Mustard Museum!
E.
Beautiful place and great selection of shops
G. K.
Great looking part of the city centre, but could do with new shops as currently only used as an alley way :/
p. h.
Interested place to visit!
M. S.
Shame alot of shops vacant
H.
Beautiful, but I'd say half the units were empty when I passed through.
D. S.
Jamies closed down, a new store coming soon. The arcade feels a bit abandoned until you get towards the market place. Its a beautiful spot and location and i look forward to see how it will be with a new cafe at the old Colmans shop but for now, its quiet and a shadow of what it used to be. So much more empty nowadays.
A. M.
It was great to see Marmalades fully
open, not much change of staff. Same excellent service. We will be back.
C. D.
Nice clean centre good arrangement of shops
B. E.
A big mall with different shops. Located at the heart of Norwich City centre.
W. A.
Lot of lovely shops
C. A.
A beautiful walk through a very historic building. This place has seen many shops come and go over the years and is home to an eclectic mix of cafes toy shops and more.
P. C.
A top 5 must see within Norwich. Just a shame most of the shops are empty.
H. W.
Beautiful place ,step back in time. Sadly to many shops empty.
S. H.
Lovely place to visit and shop. Well worth a visit
D. N.
Beautiful art nouveau building. However many empty shops there.
E. B.
Love the arcade..Hopefully a few more shops will get tenants soon
C. P.
Few shops have survived COVID here, and most have closed or downsized, still rating 3 stars because of the potential to return to what is was before.
L. A.
Very pretty shop fronts/building but there are a few empty units inside
S. V.

J. G.
Beautiful arcade. Excellent cafe and super toy shop as well as other individual places.
J. T.
Hard to believe that there was once a hotel on this site, but Norwich architect George Skipper transformed the former Royal Hotel into the present Royal Arcade.
H. B.
Lots of shops nice stone floor clean tidy nice place for tourists to visit.
M. L.
A lovely gem in the city of Norwich with the best chocolate shop there too

Lovely shopping Arcade and has a sense of regality to it. It's kept beautiful and it would be a shame if you missed visiting it whilst in Norwich.

Lovely Art Nouveau architecture

(Translated) Mall. This covered shopping mall is located in the center of Norwich, just behind the NORWICH Market. A beautiful "art nouveau" architecture from the end of the 19th century serves as a shelter for some shops that do not particularly attract the client, just the curious. Many shops remain unoccupied. The size and the beauty of these places allows us easily to transpose at the beginning of the last century where this place was to be THE luxury gallery of NORWICH !!!

Galerie marchande.
