Reviews of York Cocoa House
K. P.
A living breathing chocolate factory, shop and cafe in one and a must for any chocolate lovers visiting the chocolate city.
We booked on to the excellent tour of the York coco house. Credit to our guide Josh who was superb at telling us about how they source the cocoa beans directly from individual farms, walking us through the various manufacturing processes from bean to bar and of all the processes among the way. Which were fully visible through glass windows and walls on site.
Highly recommend. And the chocolate is delicious.
After the tour we received a 10% discount on site purchases.

Love this beautiful new place with great decor and very clean shop with many great treats :)!! I love the cute gesture of adding extra chocolate on the hot chocolate and enjoyed their lovely hot chocolate. There were a lot of choices in the menu and great to see that they were affordable as well.
Would love to have the earl grey hot chocolate back!!! That was my favourite one but orange chocolate was nice as well.
M. P.
What an absolutely fantastic experience. Luke (our guide) was so knowledgeable and so engaging with his tour. The chocolate tasting was fascinating, we really loved learning about what goes into the process but also what makes the different flavours so unique. I would definitely come back again.
s. e.
Luke is knowledgeable and a real inspiration in that he encourages interaction. Never failed to answer my many questions. We left with a good knowledge of how and why quality is worth the buy.
Cheers Luke and York coco 😁🍫

This company really excels in events. They are creative and organized in a wide variety of activities. The cakes and bakes are good. A working bean to bar chocolate factory. Watched them pour powdered milk and coco butter into the conching machine and that was fun. They have tours daily, even on weekends. Bean to bar classes. Full coffee bar and even coffee ice! Shakes and summer menu. Milk all the way to 100% cacao. Really fun. I had 85% dark hot chocolate and my sister had coffee. Really happy staff. A joyous place full of activities and families enjoying themselves. We showed up the wrong day for our chocolate indulgence. I thought we signed up to attend December 20 but we signed up for the 21st. They could not have been more accommodating in fixing MY mistake. Very lovely people

Booked for a chocolate indulgence session with the York Cocoa House as I'd noticed on their website that they can cater for different dietary requirements. As a lactose intolerant person life can be pretty dull when it comes to food and I certainly didn't know what to expect from a cocoa house & their dairy free options. I was absolutely blown away, my partner and I had exactly the same experience and food, all dairy free and delicious (you couldnt tell it was dairy free). Couldn't recommend this place highly enough for anyone who is vegan/dairy free/lactose intolerant - they have an extensive selection of chocolate drinks and food that are suitable! The lovely team working also informed me they're one of the only Cocoa houses that can cater to nut free too. Definitely worth a visit.

I booked the chocolate tour and it was absolutely worth. Ample details were provided of materials and processes that are used to manufacture chocolates. Machines were also shown. The minute details were also provided which I am not sharing here to let you go with some excitement and not having pre feeded information :)
The tour was in stages with lot of time to give answers to our curious minds and absorb the information. The girl had good amount of knowledge and we were given lot of interesting information.
At the end of the tour chocolate tasting was also there but in a distinct way.. Enjoyed the chocolates ofcourse and the way thet were provided to us to eat.
After the tour got an offer to buy anything in with 10% off.
Would recommend booking its 1hour long tour. You will like it!

Smells are delicious. Tours are available to learn the process of how they make chocolate. Plenty of different chocolate from around the world. Orderded the daily chocolate which was a 70% and it was tasty a little on the bitter side though. My wife ordered the spanish hot chocolate and it was 85% coco, well lets just say we both had severe reactions to this one it tasted congealed as well almost as if it was not finished being mixed. I will come back and try their chocolate again.
J. K.
Wonderful place, wonderful staff, wonderful chocolate. This is an excellent addition to your trip to York. I highly recommend the Chocolate Manufactory Tasting Journey, as they talk about their process from start to finish, explaining all the machines, and then you get to taste some of their delicious chocolates. I also recommend having a sit down in the cafe afterwards, and enjoying one of their delicious hot chocolates and reading a book.
L. E.
We did a lollipop making experience here, lovely place, great staff, AMAZING hot chocolate and the gift shop is choc-lovers paradise, can't wait to come back!
P. L.
A chocolate lover’s dream. Take part in chocolate workshops, pop in for a hot chocolate, or just stop by to pick up your favourite bar of chocolate - ranging anywhere from 40% to 100% cocoa
W. R.
Amazing. Popped in for a hot chocolate that was so delicious we decided to come back the next day for a tour and a chocolate tasting which was an incredible experience!
Ended up buying a bunch of chocolate to take with us and can't recommend the chocolate milkshake enough!
The biggest bonus for me (severe nut allergy) though, is the whole place is nut free. Meant I could enjoy the whole experience and indulge in whatever I wanted without any anxiety. I can't usually do that at this sort of place.
C.
This place was a great place for chocolate lovers with a selection of confectionery for all. The staff were really accepting and highly welcoming and they were very patient. From other reviews, I have heard that the bean to bar was a scam. Since I did not do this, I cannot say whether this is true or not. The tasting was quite a delight with, as I said before with a ranged variety of cocao percentages.
h. m.
Lovely chocolate shop, the indulgence chocolate tasting was amazing and work every penny! We also did the chocolate lolly pops, might seem boring but we loved it (like we were children). Perfect for a lovely lunch out and to taste lots of yummy treats! Thank you so much for looking after us and making the experience perfect!
M. W.
Thanks to an event arranged in conjunction with the Festival of Ideas, we attended a chocolate tasting here. The staff were so knowledgeable and the chocolate was amazing.
If you get a chance we would definitely recommend the fizzy sherbet chocolate.
A great place to pick up new and original chocolate presents for friends and family.
J. W.
Fantastic hot chocolate with very knowledgeable staff who are passionate about how they manufacture their chocolate.
Sophie who ran the masterclass was superb in explaining the different processes for making chocolate and sharing baking tips. The masterclasses are useful for people of all skill levels and very fun.
A very good experience.
S. M.
Booked a manufactory tasting tour with our York Passes. A great experience and amazing flavours of real chocolate. Had a hot chocolate after - highly recommended. Clean, tidy and smelt of chocolate, but not overpowering. Definitely recommend a visit.
S. N.
The tasting experience was really nice. And so was the chocolates... some really nice dark chocolate compared to the ones you get outside. JESS was Brilliant and even gave us places to dine with York.
E. M.
Took grandchildren aged 5 and 6. First they had the Childrens chocolate milk shake which apparently was the best they ever tasted, and it came with a chocolate too. I had a cup of tea and also got a chocolate. We had the tour where a very knowledgable young lady explained the whole process from growing to eating and everything in between . Then we got to taste various products, and evaluate them. Next the grandchildren made chocolate lolly’s which they decorated with various marshmallows and sprinkles. This went into the fridge to set hard then was presented back to the child looking very professional in a bag with a ribbon on and the child’s name card attached. I thought it was a nice day out in York and feel sure others would also enjoy it. It’s a nice clean place and the staff are all very polite.
H. S.
Definitely check this place out if you are nearby. An excellent selection of chocolate and chocolate-involving drinks. You will find types of chocolate up to 100% dark.
A. H.
Popped in brew as early for appointment. Too find they make chocolates. They gave me one chocolate my brew. Lovery surprised and it was wonderful. Called back next day with friend and bought some there chocolate did not disappointed me..loverly .worth a visit
P. W.
Did the chocolate tour and had a great time. Guide was very knowledgeable and entertaining. Bought some chocolate and had a lovely coffee too!
N. S.
We were on holiday and decided it would be an amazing thing to do to make chocolate. The young man who took the session was very knowledgeable and was polite and friendly throughout would definitely do it again. The best bit was eaten the chocolate we have made...... Mmmmmm xx
N. B.
The best chocolate I've ever had. Highly recommend the salted caramel cake and the chocolate affogato. The cocoa nibs tea is a very refreshing alternative as chocolate drinks go!
A. L.
Friendly staff. High quality chocolate and chocolate drinks. Not only good for trying fine delicious chocolate but also an interesting choice for exploring more variety of chocolate
G. B.
Amazing coffee, got chocolates and chocolate making course! Can't wait till we are next in the area. Thanks team!
S. H.
Wow! If you like chocolate you must try this place; everything we tried was superb.
But we aware there is only chocolate and coffee/tea.
E. P.
My husband booked a tour here for my birthday and it was brilliant! If you're a chocolate lover I highly recommend. Amelia presented the tour and she was fab! Thank you York Cocoa House 🍫
M. B.
Wonderful place! I attended the day-long chocolate explorer masterclass, which was amazingly informative and enjoyable. The intention appeared to convey as much as possible of the knowledge built up over decades worth of learning about chocolate into one day's teaching. They clearly have so much expertise, curiosity and commitment to quality, without being pretentious. I came out with so much appreciation for chocolate, and felt like chocolate-making had been demystified. Totally recommended
R.
High cocoa quality and service. It is a pity the high prices of the bags (2'5£ 50gr), but the taste and the smooth of the hot chocolate were perfect. I will repeat if I come back.
M. C.
Good service , we enjoyed our hot chocolate, it was delicious. Great experience.
J. S.
Best white hot chocolate ever. Often it's just not sweet milk, but this one tastes amazing!
Kids did made chocolate Lolly's. £4, only took about 10 mins to make then similar to let them set, simple but effective and they were very happy with their creations 😃😋🍫
D. B.
Did the chocolate making course with Luke, it was informative interesting and good fun. Would recommend 👌
M. W.
Funny and an experience I would do again. It was a Birthday present off my Niece for my sisters Birthday..
K. G.
Amelia was an entertaining and fun host and guide for the chocolate making tour here. Time flew by and we had a lot of laughs and fun.
g. h.
Lovely cafe with very helpful staff. A must for chocolate lovers.
Located in a small quiet, historic street but I think this adds to the enjoyment
S. B.
We had a chocolate indulgence experience. At my 4 year olds request!
Everything was delicious, and there was loads of chocolate. I knew we couldn't eat it but they had boxes to take away.
We made lollipops. She thought it was the best thing ever and I have scored major mummy points.
M.
Lovely experience enjoyed it a lot it’s a speciality chocolate place with nice music and atmosphere the white hot chocolate is to die for !!!!
L. C.
Really good range of vegan options, went for a chocolate indulgence and didn't feel at all like we were shorted on choice. lovely cakes, friendly staff!
E. A.
Amazing hot chocolate even better got to see them making chocolate.
D. M.
Best cup of cocoa/hot chocolate I've ever had. Great, friendly service.
E. L.
Nice and professional cocoa store!!!! And wonderful place... also provide soya, almond or rice milk!!!!
A. H.
It was nice, very chocolatey as you expect. Wouldn't recommend the Spanish hot chocolate.very bitter
B. B.
I booked "make your own chocolate bar" for my partner's birthday as he loves chocolate, Sarah was our chocolate expert and she was fabulous, she kept it interesting and explained the process well.
Our chocolate bars were soooooo nice!! It's inspired us to try some more flavours at home!!
C. C.
Staff were amazing! The indulgent experience was so much fun ! 😍
A. J.
Highly recommended! The chocolate tour is wonderful and very knowledgeable! I love the face they try to minimise waste and the chocolate is delicious
P. L.
Fantastic place to visit - amazing hot chocolate where you get to choose which chocolate you want your drink made from (white, milk, or different strengths of dark).
Dog-friendly too!
R.
Great hot chocolate. Not super thick, actual drinking consistency (though would depend on what you get. We got the white and 50% classic) Available with cream and marshmallows on top. They do little factory tours there too.
A. H.
Absolutely delicious chocolate, hot chocolate, and ice cream. They offer several different levels of hot chocolate (milk, classic, moderately dark, quite dark, very dark, completely dark). The mint ice cream is especially good. It has a slightly nutty flavor.
S. P.
We had a tasting experience and really enjoyed it. Very interested, friendly staff and incredible chocolate!
P. D. C.
Loved it!
Wish the chocolate itself was a little cheaper though. It is all delicious and very inviting
E. K.
Great chocolate and hot chocolate was to die for
A. M.
The best place for chocolate decadence in York (possibly anywhere!). The chocolate and apricot slice is divine (and vegan). As is the Spanish style hot chocolate (also vegan when made with Almond or Soya milk). Whether you're in town for the day or for longer this place must be on your essential to do list.
O. W.
Had the Afternoon Tea (Afternoon Chocolate as they call it) which was brilliant. Very friendly staff and the coffee was very good, nice selection of single origin coffees. We planned to go to Betty's for afternoon tea but very happy we went here, was an amazing experience and can't believe how subtle use of chocolate works so well with so many things. Would definitely go again.
T. J.
Really lovely place. I went on the tour and found it very enjoyable. I have anxiety and panic attacks but our guide (James) said that if at any point someone becomes uncomfortable for any reason we can put a hand up and explain that we need to leave so I would reccomend this highly to people who may struggle with mental health or social situations. Our guide was friendly and the tour was highly enjoyable and very funny. One of my favourite places I've visited in york :)
D. L.
A must for hot chocolate fiends. Lots to choose from and high quality chocolate to buy.
R. B.
I've been searching for a venue to have a vegan hot chocolate (I'm milk intolerant).... and found a rare gem amongst what I would of never considered.
I chose a ginger dark chocolate hot chocolate and dark chocolate fondant, I had no reaction to the hot chocolate or little fondant which was great!
The venue is a quietly quirky place, with the feel of an old school classroom (they actually do chocolate making classes here!).
Staff are welcoming and friendly, the chocolateer came out and Greeted me as I'd phoned earlier to check they did vegan hot chocolate. She then guided the staff member how to make one, I then pondered if many knew of this find I had stumbled across!
On the menu is chocolate themed treats and food, which is suitable for most others. It's a perfect venue for either business or families, and well worth a visit.
p. m.
Extremely friendly staff who was very careful about our dietary needs. She was very comforting when my boy had his meltdown. We felt very comfortable and enjoyed our lollipop making to the T. Thank you very much for creating such wonderful memories! Excellent service indeed! Btw, the chocolate tasted amazing!
L. P.
Amazing and authentic chocolate café where you can get anything to do with chocolate, deliciously home made.
j. h.
My sister in law persuaded me to try a hot chocolate. Fabulous, I will return 👍
K. M.
Very interesting and we enjoyed the dark chocolate samples.
C. D.
Lovely cup of tea, clean staff friendly and apricot fruit bar delicious
F. T.
A cosy little setting that's the perfect spot for chocolate lovers. We popped in for some hot drinks - they have a nice selection of milk/dark chocolate drinks. I had the festive hot chocolate that was really tasty, and our drinks also each came with a cute Christmas pudding shaped chocolate! They have a variety of chocolate cakes and cookies that looked good but we were unfortunately too full to try ...
l. h.
Very interesting tour with a lovely guide. We learnt quite a lot about the chocolate making process that we had no idea about. I found i loved the piff that surrounds the cocoa beans (white stuff around oranges) gutted they don't sell it yet though ! Interesting to taste the difference in flavours of cocoa beans from different countries.
L. B.
Excellent introduction to chocolate making, I would recommend to anyone interested in craft chocolate. Sophie and Luke were brilliant hosts. Also the cakes in the cafe are to die for!
C. B.
Small chocolate works with tasting sessions, shop and cafe. Worth a trip if like chocolate cakes.
M. H.
Fantastic experience! Staff so friendly, helpful and accommodating. Well thought out menu. Definitely recommend!!
T. D.
Delicious hot chocolate & coffe. Home made chocolate brownie was delicious as well 😛
s.
Delicious and unusual hot chocolates with good service . A real treat although I kiss the ambience of the old olace. Staff as wonderful as ever.
Seating outside so can be covid safe.
B. S.
Yesterday I went on a tour at the Cocoa works with my partner! The first thing I want to say is James was an excellent host, funny, interesting and an overall credit to the York Cocoa Works brand! It was wonderful learning about how cocoa is cultivated and turned into chocolate and the tasting was brilliant too, especially if you enjoy dark chocolate! They were also brilliant with Covid measures! If you get chance to go, I recommend it and I hope you are as lucky as we were to get James!
I. S.
Did the Make Your Own Chocolate Bar experience and it was a lot of fun. James was really knowledgeable and funny and made it a really good experience! Definitely worth a visit if you're in York.
J. B.
We went for the making chocolate 🍫 experience it was great 👍
G. W.
Excellent demonstration with tasters. Lots of good information on cocoa and chocolate.
J. T.

Amazing hot chocolates!
J. C.
Was given the tour by James. Lovely chap, made the experience memorable. Very knowledgeable and entertaining. Highly recommended as part of a visit to York. The chocolate was delicious!
D. N.
The hot chocolate drink shop for me. If you are a hot chocolate lover like me, you will love this place. They have variety of hot chocolate drink with different density, dark, very dark chocolate. The staff are friendly. Definitely must try.
A.
Lovely range off chocolate based drinks and food. Staff are fine, if slightly slow at service. Menu is quite limited as nothing is not chocolate based, so don't plan on a savory meal! The hot chocolates are all nice so do go and enjoy one of them!
R. H.
Friendly staff , rich tasty chocolate good price
A.
Wonderful hot chocolate, rocky road, cappuccino and chocolate torte. Only minor complaint is the chocolate torte is a bit too rich (coming from two chocoholics) service was great and they were happy to get more tap water for us. A gem within York, we will definitely return on our next visit to York
M. S.
Enjoyed the short guided tour and tasting session.

Georgeous, georgeous, georgeous inside and out. Feels so welcoming and cosy with chocolate everywhere. Such a hive of activity and things to do.
Also a pick up point for York Coffee Emporium, which is handy.
J. S.
Hands down the best place in York! Great service, they cater for different allergies very well. There isn't much seating in the new cafe but great areas for parties. I love the Afternoon tea and my favourite thing there is the torte. Great hot chocolates too! Basically if you love chocolate, visit here!
S. B.
Nice selection of drinks and fantastic cakes.
a. v.
This is a nice place with good service. The most interesting thing though is the menu. They are quit inventive and creative with how they serve you chocolate. If anything, definitely try a hot chocolate.
A. R.
Just came in out of interest because it looked lovely from the outside and very interestingly you can see through the windows staff actually making chocolate. There are lots of little tasting bowls dotted around in front of all of the different chocolates made in the store, we were immediately greeted by a lovely lady, asking if we were okay and to give her a shout if we had any questions. We had a wonder around looking at the amazing selection of chocolates and chose 3 bags, took them to the till and had a good chat with another lovely lady at the till, she was obviously very passionate about chocolate and the process of taking it from a raw material to the finished product! I work in a confectionary factory so it was SO interesting to me to see the smaller, finer details of it all.
I loved this little place and I absolutely will be coming back to do the masterclasses that they offer to get an understanding of the arts and sciences involved in chocolate!
I can't get over how pleasant this little visit was, how passionate both of the women were about chocolate had really left a lasting impression, keep it up!
Absolutely divine!
H. S.
Pleasant atmosphere.friendly service.Good coffee and nice chocolate based snack cakes
Chocolates made on the premises.
Hoping to open chocolate tasting tours in August.also sells tasty Icecream Safety regs in place and followed
A nice place to spend time for a drink .
M. J.
The York Cocoa House is tucked away somewhat from the main attractions in the city, but is well worth seeking out. As the name suggests, they specialise in all things chocolate. The menu is actually relatively simple, but you can pick the chocolate you'd like for your milkshake, hot chocolate or mocha. They also have a selection of cakes on offer, of which the brownie was enjoyed and recommended.
I had the Spanish hot chocolate, which was thick and creamy, made with 85% cocoa chocolate. I chose to have it made with almond milk, and it was excellent.
It's quite small inside with limited seating, but worth trying to get a seat just to try their chocolate drinks!
H. H.
Very Nice hot chocolate selection
A. K.
I was visiting York last week and came across this place. Had the best hot chocolate I've ever tasted (I opted for the classic milk chocolate one). The lady behind the counter was super friendly. Will definitely go back here.
S. D.
The 100% Dark Hot Chocolate was amazing, staff very pleasant and I also enjoyed the space.
S. S.
unforgettable hot chocolate drink. We are recommend to choose classic flavor and which is excellent. And chocolate expresso is a surprise to us, so thick in texture and not bitter, must try.
S. W.
A nice way to spend some time with very informative staff who love their chocolate. I must say that I still love milk more then dark but they came close to changing my mind.
M. J.
My grandaughter loved the experience, making her own chocolate bar..
Lovely staff
M. A.
A delightful place, high quality and great range of chocolate, very good cafe too with friendly and helpful staff.
J. S. A.
This is the place if you want hot chocolate. Coffee is also very nice as are their cakes. And their new biscottis are stupidly good. Their chocolate bars and truffles are great and they have plenty of options.
And if you can get to one of their Chocolatadas food where they prepare very interesting recipes all with chocolate in some form I highly recommend you do.
Personnel is lovely and it's always fun to have a look at how they make the chocolate.
I. E.
Anyone who loves chocolate and especially hot chocolate has to go there sometime! This was by far my best hot chocolate I've ever had and I'm always craving it. The staff is very friendly and the location is very nice and beautiful. Highly (!) recommend going there!
P. G.
Fantastic place to see the process of chocolate making in a small scale manufactory. Really enjoyed the tour and the enthusiasm of our host. Wonderful flavours of chocolate from differing provenance, proving that you can learn something new everyday. Loved the Indian Kerala bean flavour (raisins) and the smoky Solomon islands. Hoping to try new flavours regularly. Brilliant local company.
A. (. i. T.
Great chocolate, delicious hot chocolate and really fun that you can see the chocolate being processed from within the shop too.
d. c.
Gorgeous chocolate. Delicious desserts.
If you are inclined lessons in chocolate making.
Friendly staff.
Amazing hot chocolate drink

Perfect chocolate. Yum.

The York Cocoa Works provides a carefully created and delicious range of chocolates of their own making, as well as a curated selection of high quality chocolates from other brands they know. Everything here is delicious, and is definitely designed for the chocolate lover rather than those who just want sugary candy. Highly recommended for anyone visiting York / needs a regular supplier of good chocolate.
S. L. (. N. M.
Cosy place loads of chocolates from different origin!
k. Y.
This is the same company that had the Cocoa House, just around the corner from Yorkminster. The range of drinking chocolate seems to be less than before. Some are very tasty, while most are the same flavour, just of different strengths. There is no food, as such, just a small number of sweets. The chocolate bars cost more than in the old shop. Part of the attraction of the former location was its "Old Curiosity Shop" feel, which is lacking completely.
Newcomers will probably be fine with it. Patrons of the old shop will be disappointed.
R. D.
Came back to York a year later just to have this again. Rich and smooth hot chocolate that warmed me up on a rainy morning.
T. L.
Best hot chocolate i have ever had! Also got delicious free chocolate with my drink - love this place!
x.
Rose Hot Chocolate amazing. Choc Gingerbread delish. Great service too.
B. G.
Delicious hot chocolate but terrible service and poor atmosphere.
We waited a long time for a staff member to even come into the cafe area (an hour before close) then they didn’t acknowledge us until I asked to order which was reacted to as if it were a slight inconvenience.
They have the product sussed but need to work on service and presentation.
W. n.
Very good and enjoyable. Would definitely recommend to go there. Very informative, we learned a lot about chocolate and the beans. 😊👍
C. U.
This was a nice and comfortable place, comfy seating too. I found the staff were friendly and the hot chocolate's me and my partner had were probably the best either of us had ever had.
Definitely recommend.
L. A.
Excellent little gem our tour guide obviously knew his chocolate and the process of making it. Windows where you could view each aspects of the process chocolate tasting session and a chocolate bar to go home with, beautiful little place and really good coffees x
T. S.
Good God I love this place, the chocolate is the best! {they also have free samples ;)}
T. W.
Great drinks, even better chocolate and a lovely set of staff. I will make sure to visit again. ☺
J. D.
Loved the tour and the chocolate! Would absolutely recommend both; learned a lot about the place and about chocolate ❤️
A. M.
Great hot chocolate and cake. Even bought some chocolate to take home. Yummy
P. M. (. C.
The hot chocolate here is amazing! We had a white hot chocolate and a moderately dark and they were both astounding.
T. C.
Had a fantastic day today for mothers day. Afternoon tea and at the end my granddaughter gave me a bag of gifts from the shop. The staff couldnt do enough to accomodate our party even though we added 2 more at last minute, they were very attentive and food presented beautifully. Highly recommend thank you
W. C.
Guided tour with a twist, and fun tasting experience. Do try the Spanish Hot Chocolate.
J. R.
Great chocolate. Massively overpriced in my opinion. Food was okay. Just ok.
A. W.
Amazing hot chocolate the taste was amazing likewise the capochino great beans.....staff very welcoming polite and attentive. .....
P. R.
Really nice place. Their chocolate is delicious and makes for a perfect gift. Try the hot chocolate drink but careful with portions, as the big bowl is almost impossible to finish!
L. H.
Good for kids go to for make own chocolate and loiipo.. Is good fun
P. S.
We called in on a cold December day and had a hot chocolate in the little cafe and it’s best I’ve ever had, we’ll be back.
J. B.
Beautiful pastries that taste divine. Very rich, ideal for chocolate lovers. Outside is in the shade so could be cool on a dull day.
P. K.
My wife and I completed the 'bean to bar' chocolate course a couple of weeks ago - although we really enjoyed the course up until the point we got to (5 stars up until then!) - I'm not sure it should really be described as 'bean to bar' - as we didn't actually make a bar! - It finished after the melangering stage. I think after mixing some of the cocoa nibs and sugar in the melanger perhaps a previous class' mixture that was ready to have the cocoa butter added could be brought out so we could have seen what mixing that in would have entailed, then subsequently we could have done some tempering, added flavouring, poured it into moulds etc. (I'm actually non the wiser what happens after the melangering stage) - so on that point it did feel kind of mis-sold. Instead York cocoa works completed the rest of the process after we'd left and sent us our chocolate bar in the post (we've still not received ours but have been told it's on its way). That said, we did have a very nice time up until the point it ended, just maybe an extra hour or two could be added on after a lunch break to complete the full process...

Lovely coffee and dark chocolate truffles

If you like chocolate, this is the place for you! Great shop and cafe

Chocoholics paradise. Try the Spanish hot chocolate. It's a real experience and you'll need a spoon to drink it.
T. k.
Sublime Hot chocolate with lots of variety! Dark, Milk, White - a special of the day, all made and manufactured on site. Something to match everyones taste buds, including Oat milk and Veggie options with wonderful cakes and treats. A real highlight in the heart of York - Yummy!
P. L.
Best hot chocolate far and wide.
S. K.
The workshop was fantastic. Very interesting, learned loads about chocolate and its history. Also came home with a delicious bar of chocolate, what's not to love?!
L. R.
The make a chocolate bar was an amazing workshop. Where you get to try various chocolates of varying coco percentage before choosing one to turn into your own bar of chocolate. Was very fun!
The chocolate afternoon tea is also worth a try especially if your a chocolate lover.
Would definitely come here again!
J. M.
Delicious, chocolate-y goodness in a beautiful environment with attentive staff.
P. L.
Our first visit to York Cocoa House. Loved it. Clean, smart, lots of delicious things to eat, and interesting stuff to look at. Friendly staff too, well worth a visit.
M. S.
Amazing place, you feel the magic of chocolate once you enter the door, amazing to watch the great chefs doing their work inside, take a cup of hot chocolate 85% , so good😋
D. E.
OUTSTANDING
The best hot chocolate i have ever had, York cocoa house supply's a chocolate drink menu and an assortment of savoury sweets/lite bites.
Afternoon tea is available and looked rather nice.
DEFINITELY worth a try
C. A.
Very cosy. Delicious selection of hot and cold chocolate treats.
L. B.
What a great place to go for afternoon tea or make your own chocolate
R.
Had a lovely visit, children made their own chocolate lollipops! and we all had chocolates and hot drinks. It was chucking it down with rain last saturday, and to get a table for 6 with no notice was good service. Chocolate to die for! we will be back!
W. i. l. l.
The food is incredibly tasty with chocolate woven into even savoury foods. We also did a chocolate making workshop which was very fun and the result was lovely creamy truffles. Definitely would go again if I am back in York!
R.
Great place with lovely drinks and cakes along with very interesting information on chocolate making and lots of varieties to try. Very friendly staff and definitely will be coming back.
M. C.
Excellent as usual 👍 superb hot chocolate and great gluten free 🍰
K. H.
Very friendly helpful staff, quick service, delicious food and comfy seats, only area of improvement would be larger tables as staff were struggling to place trays down
V. B.
Amazing hot chocolate. We did a chocolate making class. Absolutely brilliant
B.
Omg the hot chocolate is fantastic and the cake is delicious little bit pricey but worth the little bit extra
A.
Nice hot chocolate but the manager is just rude! Or at least I think shes the manager mid 30s, glasses. There's always a bit of a wait but no acknowledgement that you are there, no updates. Shes quite full of her own self importance actually. I think someone needs a lesson on Customer Service.
M. F.
The best hot chocolate (made with real chocolate) I've ever had.
A. O.
Friendly staff and drinks/food well worth the money. Will be going again
D. B.
Great staff. Good coffee.
M. R.
Awesome place for food and chocolate. The ice cold milkshakes are amazing!
K. C.
It was a lovely place to visit. It smelled amazing and there were little bits of chocolate you could try. But there wasnt enough seating. There were 8 of us, and we didnt fit in brilliantly. The hot chocolates were lovely, and the lattes were the best I've tasted, but once we ordered the hot chocolates, we had to pay extra for the marshmallows. Only very minor things, but that's why I give it 4 stars
A. K.
Great drink and friendly service
A. W.
The most amazing 'cold hot chocolate' I've ever had (probably the only one, to be fair). On the pricey side but as a treat, well worth it.
M. 0.
Stunning decor, beautiful place to stop for a drink with loads of choices of delicious chocolate drinks (hot and cold) along with mane choices of fancies and cakes. Their chocolate making workshops look fun too. They run at various times throughout the week.
T. B.
This is a real hidden gem in York. They have a large selection of drinks, particularly hot chocolates of almost ever conceivable type. The food is chocolate inspired (of course! :)), but is lovely and fresh.
They also do chocolate making workshops in the shop too.
V. N.
Rich with chocolate, lots of character
J. M.
Phenomenal cocoa and mocha drinks. Not too sweet, no flavourings, no fillers : just pure, quality cocoa bean chocolate. Awesome!
G. S.
We had an afternoon chocolate. It was beautiful. The savouries were a variety of their normal menu, their yorkshire rarebit was so good we will be back to have that by itself. The wife doesn't like fruit scones, but she loved the cherry and chocolate ones on offer. We finished the whole thing and were really impressed. Everyone working there were lovely. We'll definitely be back
S. P.
Loved this place. Great and varied flavours of chocolate.
B. R.
Really cool great value chocolate making experience. Quaint atmosphere worth a try to make and learn about chocolate.
T. E.
Always friendly. Great place for chocoholics. Tremendous effort made to source cocoa beans from individual farms. Passionate about what they do.
Z. L.
The customer service is brilliant, and all the workers are so lovely!! Relaxing atmosphere and great food and drink!
P. G.
The breadth of hot chocolate is incredible; and the savoury chocolate themed menu is a new twist on familiar things. Well worth a visit.
C. W.
Fabulous chocolate and ice cream. Hot chocolate to die for. They also do afternoon tea.
O. B.
Gorgeous hot chocolate (THE BEST) and a lovely atmosphere.
J. G.
Fabulous service and the chocolate is really tasty. Really enjoyed the chocolate tasting
S. N.
If you love chocolate, you really owe it to yourself to visit this lovely shop and cafe.
T. F.
Fantastic coffees and cake. Friendly staff who were ever so polite and helpful. A quirky building with some great dishes on the menu.
J. N. (.
A quaint little chocolate cafe on the edge of the city centre. The four of us had an excellent hot chocolate and cake. Their cocoa meringue was absolutely superb! This proved to be a very good choice for our late afternoon break.
c. j.
Food was delicious but the staff were not very friendly and we felt they rushed us out.
E. G.
It was very interesting. Things I didn't know about chocolate. Been to the Cadbury world many years ago. This was just as good. I would definitely go again. Well worth the second visit. Eileen.
R. P.
Cool little cafe, the tour is a bit expensive but the lad who did it was knowledgable.
The red haired lass on the tills is probably the rudest person I have ever encountered however..!
G. B.
It's a must visit while visiting York!!! Funny tour and best house made chocolate ever ;)
H. C.
Love the use of chocolate in savoury as well as sweet dishes. Sells great chocolate as well.
C. H.
Lovely range of chocolate drinks plus coffee usual variations. Staff nice & friendly.
T. D.
For chocolate lovers in York this is a must. Beautiful place tastefully decorated in an vintage style, with friendly staff and an unusual menu that comes complete with a history of Yorks chocolate trade. There is a selection of drinks, desserts and other snacks all infused with chocolate. A chocolate lovers spiritual home.
C. M.
We had been told that during our stay in York we had to visit Betty's for afternoon tea. I am here to say that I am *so glad* that we didn't. Skipping the queues and hefty prices from the former, we stumbled upon an alternative option: York Cocoa House! Our tickets were easily booked, and we were welcomed with a smile upon arrival. And can I just say how absolutely blown away my husband and I were by this delightful, total novel experience? For starters, our waitress didn't blink an eye at our request for vegetarian options. Not only that, but it turns out the savoury offerings were incredible and all incorporated chocolate in some form: rarebit with chocolate sprinkles, white chocolate stuffed bell pepper, and some sort of mysterious wrap. Honestly it blew any egg and cress boring sandwich totally out of the water. Couple that with cherry and chocolate scones that I now can only dream about, and the delicious chocolate desserts at the top, and well. I was over the moon with our experience. (And we got two chocolate themed alcoholic drinks, and hot cocoas/coffee to start!)
Trust me when I say this y'all. Skip Betty's. If you like chocolate, go to YCH. If you LOVE chocolate though... you OWE IT to yourself. You won't regret it!
D. C.
I’ve been several times now and I’ve never come away disappointed with the quality of the chocolate or drinks.
A somewhat hidden gem of York and a must visit place.
R. H.
Chocolate making with James was great fun and the chocolate was gorgeous.
M. Y.
We had a lovely afternoon tea hot chocolate followed by a truffle work shop in which we made chocolate truffles. They were really really good if you like chocolate it's a great treat mine was a birthday gift from my daughter.
P. S.
Did one of the chocolate making masterclasses here and had the best time. So interesting and so much fun! Delicious, too, obviously!
E. t. N.
The store is filled with the wonderful aroma of chocolate. That's about it. My daughter and I went in and were going to buy some chocolate. Unfortunately, there was no one available to help us. The three types of chocolate we wanted (white, milk, and an assortment) were out of stock at 2pm. However, 4 people were in back of the service counter serving a handful of customers. Two others were preparing chocolates in back (which is interesting to watch). People who came in after us couldn't get any help either. We ended up leaving with nothing.
Might need to teach about customer service on the other side of the counter, perhaps?
J. H.
The young girl amy I think her name was. Very informative.
d. M.
Took my daughter here yesterday and did a ganache course very well run and great for all ages and skill sets.
S. W. (.
Really nice and friendly place with lovely rich hot chocolate
C. L.
Lovely coffee and cake, crockery a little worn however. Staff pleasant and friendly service.
M. D.
You can eat chocolate and you can make chocolates. And nice coffee. And nice staff.
R. b.
York isn't York without a trip to this beautiful little shop. Amazing for kids, making Lolly's. Really friendly staff and beautiful coffee and hot chocolate.
A. B.
Okay food, a little too sweet, poor customer service however. Potentially racist as all British people were served better than us. Will announce this on my YouTube: TECHNO BLAST
K. c.
We had fun making chocolate lollipops, then enjoyed an excellent hot chocolate. Definitely recommend with or without kids.
A. P.
Delicious take away hot choc... lovely decor inside too
C. V.
My husband and I did a cocoa class that was very affordable and so much fun! We learned about chocolate and even got to make our own chocolate bars. Highly recommend!
J. H.
The hot chocolate is amazing I had the 85% going to try the 100 next time
R. S.

A. L.
Fantastic hot chocolate in a variety of cocoa strengths. Great Rocky Road slice too!
K. K.
The idea of having a chocolate afternoon tea is brilliant and delicious. Both savory and sweet parts were great and lasted until the next day.
M. M.
Didn't stay very long in there as it was our first stop before a busy day ahead. Friendly staff, enjoyed making our chocolate lollies.
S. S.
the coco was SO DELICIOUS!! IT was hand made and had floating soft slivers of chocolate in it...it was soooooo gooood!
There are a few tables to sit in, a teaching area (looks really interesting), and a nice gift shop.
Did I mention the coco was sooooo goooooood (I had one on the darker range - choosing the "strength" was fun, too).
oh - and the Hot Chocolate was sooooooo gooooood!!!
B. K.
Great experience here, definitely come if you have a sweet tooth!
G. L.
Staff are so lovely and friendly! Amazing flavours and such a nice place

In York Cocoa house there is some chocolate to try. Dark and light and white made the chocolate shop amazing. Review from my daughter
J. T.
Very welcoming, great chocolate. I would come back here!
H. F.
Quirky place with a good selection of chocolate. Lacks atmosphere and the staff, though very pleasant, seem a bit uncoordinated in their approach.
T. S.
A chocolate fest in a quaint little café. Staff mostly friendly, but Alice was particularly helpful and friendly. Was understandably busy and had to wait, probably could have been less of a wait if host had been more focused!! Chocolate drinks quite imaginative and unusual, had peanut chocolate, but wished I'd tried chilli chocolate drink!!
j.
my hot chocolate was gorgeous, only one niggle is that a got a flavoured one and the taste was a little insipid, I went with my brother and his was really strong, I wish I got his! nevertheless, I would go again.
I. M.
Definitely the place to go, friendly staff, and the cakes created on the site are to die for,
G. l.
Nice choco tour and salted caramel/choco slice was just out of this world!!!
A. K.
Everything is very tasty. It's quite small so getting a table can be a challenge
P. H.
Good friendly cafe with an unusual and tasty range of food.
L. C.

K. G.
I got the quite dark chocolate milkshake which was amazing and rich, loads of dark chocolate bits. Okay pricing- £3.40 for a regular This store is comparable to Dark Sugar in London
D. H.
Reasonably good service, jam packed at all times, seating two groups to a large table was uncomfortable, drinks we're okay, but I expected more.
K. W.
We made chocolate lollipops with our children. Delicious chocolate, very friendly staff, highly recommended.

K. R.
Special birthday trip... We hoped for something special and to be surrounded in chocolate ly magic.....
Did not disappoint ! Lots of help getting me and my wheelchair in, discreet adaptations made the trip easy. Large toilet though chest of drawers could do with being moved from behind the doors...
However stunning menu of everything chocolate. The best Spanish hot chocolate I've ever had: thick, rich, just a shade before bitter.... Would totally recommend the afternoon tea for 1 shared between 2. For £13.50 we had a special hot chocolate (priced at £3.95} chocolate truffle on the side... Plus a proper lovely cake stand with chicken wrap, canopies, rarebit, all savoury but with chocolate adding a special flavour. Plus and divine cherry and chocolate scone with cream and jam and taste sizes of the torte and meringue. Absolutely divine and we felt very good value.
For the sheer chocolately birthday fun of it we made a chocolate lolly each. The ritual of choosing toppings, following instructions, shaping and decorating our lolly was really fun. After eating they had set in the fridge and we were given cellophane bag, ribbon and tag to take them home with. £4 sounds a lot for a chocolate lolly but for the time spent entertaining our family and the sheer treat of it all it was well worth it.
A little gem, obviously so much love and knowledge has gone into this place. Definitely recommend and hopefully we will revisit!
m. d.

M. W.
Polite staff very clean and lots to see and learn
M. R.
Some of the best food in York. The salted caramel torte is amazing, but the chocolate and cheese scones and chocolate stout cake are lovely too.
Then there are the drinks... thick hot chocolates with peanut butter in them, chilli, white chocolate, caramel... you name it... they have it. And they're all even better than they sound. If you're nearby and thinking of going to Bettys, walk 100yrds down the road and go here instead, it's way, way better.
