Reviews of University of Birmingham Sport & Fitness
B. A. (.
Gym is reasonably sized - was expecting bigger as it is extremely busy at times.
Swimming pools are great with more than enough room.
Steam room and sauna are nice - only thing to be desired is better placement of them.
H. B.
An excellent gym (although, to be fair, this is the only gym I've been to) with adequate sport and swim facilities too.
While I have had some issues with their IT systems, the staff working there have been very helpful putting in place both temporary and permanent solutions to my problems.
The only other issue I have is that the gym can get a little busy at times - I tend to go late at night, but any other time the machines are too close together and you can't take in a bag.
A. P.
Excellent facilities, good environment and SOPs strictly followed during COVID 19.
Lots of activites for all age groups. Swimming pool and gym are the state of the art...
D. P.
Great, modern facilities here with a nice Costa over looking the pool. Pool is great but changing rooms could a hit cleaner and the showers aren't fantastic for a smaller person! Spin studio is fab and the instructors are first rate.
H. A.
Awesome energy
Nice ambience
Motivated crowd
Good, clean and functional equipment
Perfect place to get back on fitness track
The range of activities is great as well!
R. S.
Attended a wheelchair basketball match. Friendly helpful staff. Love the design of the building.
a.
I like the new UoB Sport and Fitness Center. It has great classes and everything I need (water fountains, a café to relax, showers). Staff is well trained and very nice.
S. M.
First time back in over a year! The equipment is well spaced out with plenty of cleaning materials. Good job UoB 👍
N. A. K.
I went here with a class of children and it was beautiful. Very modern and clean. The instructors were super with the children from the non swimmers to the budding Duncan Goodhews. I have seen it being built on my journey to and from work so was really pleased to visit.
A. G.
I like to swim here a couple of times per week. The only downside is that sometimes the pool closes almost all the lanes, and everybody tries to squeeze into two lanes. I wish they had a schedule for their activities, but did mail them and their reply was that they cannot provide a schedule as it varies too much. Well that's pretty annoying. But other than this, the pool is really really nice.
J. K.
Great selection of classes with some amazing instructors. Gym is busy at peak times,so I tend to avoid. Swimming pool is great. Changing rooms usually clean, but again can be very busy at peak times. It’s a same there are not many individual changing rooms for those that wish to have more privacy. This and the cost of membership is why I’ve given it 4 and not 5 stars. I don’t feel the facilities warrant the amount of membership that is charged.
D. H.
I mostly do classes here which are fantastic value - particularly if you buy a lot of them in one go. There are a range of instructors, some good, some not so good, some great - it's just a matter of trying different classes and seeing what/who suits you. The facility itself is amazing, so clean and modern. I love going here for a mental break from studying.
J. Z.
The swimming pool is good as far as what I have seen. I haven't try the gym yet, but apparently there is too much people inside during peak time. They should do one-off swimming to people who have membership and their friends want to come along.
I. S.
Excellent gym, too busy. I've been a member for over 2 years now. During term times the gym is incredibly busy especially around September. At the most peak time of year and time of day you essentially won't be able to use any equipment. Expect groups of 3-4 people crowding around. The squat rack area is excellent and great to see but once again you won't be able to use it during peak times.
All that said, there is a lot of cardio equipment so you can usually get a cardio workout in any time of day.
If you don't mind going to the gym at 6am when it opens, you'll get at least 45-60 minutes of good strength based training without having to wait for anybody.
The equipment is of the highest standard. Several types of barbell including Texas Barbell for heavy lifting and thin Olympic barbells. All of the weight plates in the squat area are high quality and expensive weight-calibrated bumper plates.
If this gym wasn't so busy, it would be incredible. If you can only gym straight after work I wouldn't join here.
A. H.
Love coming swimming here. Staff are always helpful and approachable. Changing rooms are cleaned often so are clean at all times. Pool is amazing. Steam/sauna facilities are a bonus. Will enjoy continuing coming here.
J. G.
(subscriber of full gym membership for a year) Equipment is top-notch: you can find virtually all varieties of gym equipment to cater for the most demanding of workouts. Car park is a total rip-off for students (driving onto campus and getting a parking ticket is cheaper) and the gym faces capacity issues at peak times. Queuing to use equipment is likely.
P. R.
Good quality sports centre even in a pandemic. Pool is well managed and spacious, very hygienic. Staff are super friendly.
J. U.
Just follow the plan, get through this and its all done, for good. He wanted to believe that this time was actually the last time.
Take the left after Gains street drop off the crew and drive to the bank and wait for the call then pull round behind the van. Wait there for three more minutes then pick up the crew and follow the van to the marina. Simple.
Sixty seconds countdown, engine revving higher than it needed his heart beating faster than he wanted. Be cool, just be cool, we've done this hundreds of times.... This is a five figure retirement job. Just let it happen.
Three minutes up, the doors open and two figures in body armour stride towards the vehicles, one opens the roller shutter on the van, the other gets in the front seat next to him.
The rest of the crew followed at pace carrying large holdalls, loading two each into the van.
Good value and great parking
R. G.
Great, safe and friendly. Good workout atmosphere
K. C.
A new build. There is an Olympic length pool, gym and indoor sports hall. Those accessing the swim pool can also use the steam and sauna rooms. The changing areas are clean with up to date lockers. You need to have a membership to use the facilities. There is a car park available, however if you stay over your allocated time you will have to pay an excessive fee which varies according to your type of membership fee.
J. J.
Brand new sports centre. Huge. Clean. Well equipped gym with latest machines. Lots of equipment. Olympic size pool. Sauna, etc. Lots of sports halls and rooms for classes and indoor events. Not expensive but priority given to university students and staff. Update: gym gets very busy someday even in the off-peak period. Queues.
J. S.
I loved this gym before it moved form the Munrow Centre to the site of the old Gun Barrels. It was great before and is, in many ways, better now, it's like the squeal to a successful film. Everything is bigger better, but it's not quite the original.
Lovely open exercise room, great showers and Costa coffee. My only gripe is the parking is restricted to 2 1/2 hours for free, all day every day and I could happily spend 4 hours or more there.
L. C.
The place is really amazing and the instructors too. But the overcontroling system really get the experience down. To get in a class for example you have to 1) book it online (what is actually very handy), 2) print the receipt at the reception, 3) use your card to enter the facilities (which is only accessible during the booked class) 4) stand by the class room until your instructor arrives and open the door for you, as you not gonna have access to it even though you have a class there. It means that if you arrive a minute late you will not be able to enter unless the instructor sees you, and 5) hand the final proof of your booking to the teacher. And after all that, when I decides to use the toilet after I have left the class, I got to know I did not have access anymore because the class had finished 5min ago. Like, come on!
E. M.
Swam in the pool competing in the british transplant games. Must say it's one of the cleanest swimming changing rooms I've been too. I think this has to do with the shoe hall before you walk into the changing rooms being no footwear aloud. Locker system is quite new to me with an electronic/magnetic wristband to open/lock your locker. Only problem is you have to remember your locker number and being forgetful I forgot it so had to try all the lockers. Also had to get another wristband the second time as it didn't work.
I must say the viewing area for a 50m pool was very tiny.
But all in all great facilities.
N. T.
I only use the gym and it is one of the best gyms ive been to! Plenty of machines, plenty of free weights, and plenty of cardio equipment. It can be busy at peak times but what would you expect? Great range catered for from 20 to 80 men and women, fitness to bodybuilding. My only criticism would be that the showers arent the best. All else is 100% spot on!
T.
This is a nice gym with a large pool and a few floors. There is a climbing wall, courts outside and loads of equipment in the gym. There are so many squat racks, loads of dumbells, a few bench presses, benches, cables, a section for floor exercises and loads of cardio machines. The changing rooms are decent despite sometimes being smelly. Plenty of lockers are available. The only downfall is that this gym is always busy even at 7am.
A. M.
Good place but sadly some staff are not friendly and adults with young kids from 0 to 14 years must be supervised buy adult. I can understand year one to year 11 but above this age still with adults doesn't make sense as I have 13 years old child and confidence strong swimmer And I can't leave my child alone in 1.2m part and go to Suna knowing my child is 1.5 m and confidence swimmer.
s. d.
great facilities clean , pool little cold for me but bearable !!
h. w.
Staff aren't always very professional or approachable, especially on the gym floor where an arrogant attitude is intolerably pervasive. I may look like a youthful student but actually I'm a fully paid up community member so do not appreciate being patronised or dismissed. Costa is a great addition to the facility, but very rarely open as advertised! For example advertised closure at 9pm but staff are reluctant to serve you at 8pm if its even still open?!? As my partner often trains late I find this very frustrating!!! Several of the barristas are fantastic but a small minority are just plain rude.
Great sauna, steam but pitiful cold showers and the pool closes indiscriminately for events without clear prior notice for members.
B. K.
If you are student membership , you cannot get in all the time when you student ID card is broken. They won’t replace your student ID with a gym card. Actually, they can give you gym card, which only available to use for one day, instead of Student ID card, but only a couple of times. After that, you are not allowed to get in. Personally speaking, if my student ID card is broken and the student hub is closed, it seems like I can only get in a couple of times. And even my student ID card is replaced, I need to wait for a long time until every information is transferred. So as a one year student membership account, why can’t I just give a gym card for a year or even a month instead of a day, while my student ID is broken?
However, the equipments in the gym are good.
T. P.
A new sports centre opened in 2017 is a great addition to the University and the Selly Oak area. Gym is equipped mostly with state of the art Techno Gym equipment. Also, there are numerous squatting platforms with Eleiko equipment. Swimming pool is great, either 25 or 50 meters, just check the timetable for details. I haven't used other services, so cannot comment. The only downside is that the centre can be crowded sometimes.
A.
Gym is decent and the leisure facilities also. However the staff members in the gym are some of the worst I've ever came across in any business. Mainly the younger members of staff. They loiter, are unhelpful and show a complete lack of professionalism in the work place.
J. A.
One of the best gyms in Birmingham for powerlifting, weightlifting, and cardio purposes. Machines are oriented towards beginners, however, and thus are not very useful for bodybuilders. They do not have good range of motion nor do you feel contractions in your muscles. Pool is also excellent.
E. B.
Great gym equipment, variable length and depth Olympic pool with sauna and steam, plus a lot of extras I haven't used (yet). The whole package - if you can get a place!
C. K.
Really good gym with lots of facilities. Staff are also very helpful. It is often extremely busy though and the best time to go often is before 7:30am.
M. S.
Just went for the pool. its ok. parking on site just remember to validate your ticket before you leave the building and make ur way nack to the car park in the swiper in reception. snazzy lockers with touch control wrist band.
A. M.
Very good covid control process. The pool booking system is very useful
S. B.
Fantastic facility and a great addition to the campus. Classes are very well run and the pool is great. The gym however is mega busy.
D. C.
Attended as a balloon modelling entertainer the National Transplant Games on Friday the 3 rd of August 2018. I had to organsize my car parking ticket and dealt with the reception staff and ate and drank in the Costa Coffee shop. Everyone I dealt with was kind, friendly and extremely helpful and nice and a wonderful reflection on the Uni of Birmingham. You have 5 star people who went the extra mile to help people ~ so very very well done ~ this was my first visit and they all created a wonderful impression ~ thank you for a very busy and enjyable day - hope you all loved my balloon creations ~ Lorralaughs The Balloon Modeller!
A. W.
Great facilities, the sauna/steam room could be advertised more clearly (they're at the deep end of the pool) but otherwise no complaints!
F. A.
Newly built and offers a huge range of facilities aimed at leisure and health. The gym does get pretty crowded at times, so I would recommend going off peak times for the best gym experience.
J. S.
Great place. Brand new, so it's very clean and snazzy. Have only swum there but it's a lovely pool.
p. d.
Excellent. The staff are so helpful welcoming and friendly.
I. A.
Great to be back, looking forward to next month when hopefully we can return to indoor classes
D. W.
Lack of free lockers (available in the previous gym) make it a pain for sports clubs who train outside, but facilities are high quality
D. P.
This facility is fantastic. It has everything fitness related under 1 roof. Staff are very helpful.
N. B.
This us my favourite place to swim in Birmingham. The pool is wonderful, especially when they have it in 50m configuration.
P. S.
Good facilities, but don't park in the carpark unless your a student 10 pounds for more than an hour and half
S. P.
Good gym
Plenty of squat racks but no mirrors
Tons of different machines
Great for leg days
R. H.
Wonderful facilities, amazing teachers, efficient staff. What more do you want?
M. L.
Good price for off peak membership. Wish it was a bit bigger, can feel cramped. Plenty of equipment bit can get very busy.
J. J.
Amazing facility. Every sport or class you could wish for in excellent surroundings very good value for money.
S. A.

E. E.

A. T.
Expensive gym for students as we aren't here for full year, but facilities are really good and the layout is nice
M. A.
Really good gym and new equipment. Only problem is there's no mirrors for the squat racks, so harder to judge techniques.
R. M.
Great gym; great staff and in a very spacious setting. Well worth the wait!
R. S.
Good facilities but crazy that membership is closed to staff as a result of opening the place to the public.
