Reviews of Watermead Country Park
D. T.
Come here for Parkrun shame the coffee man was poorly, still no toilets and nowhere for a snack to eat looking forward to when those things are put in place. However I found a nice peaceful spot to sit and watch the world go by while a Robin sat and sang with all the other birds
E. S.
This is a lovely place to clear your head. Beautiful lake. Lovely walk. £2.50 for parking all day is amazing considering you can fish! The only problem I had was when I forgot my radar key. I was unable to unlock the gate, luckily my electric scooter fitted in the pedestrian walkway.
K. G.
Beautiful peaceful place. No amenities but they are not required
m. g.
Its marvelous but a disgrace the toilets are still not repaired after years of promising, they even could put toilets down and pay for them but to have nothing is disgusting.
o. A.
Such a beautiful, quiet, and scenic place. Certainly recommend!
J. L.
Just off a busy main road is the vast expanse of Watermead Country park with wide vistas, water fowl, geese, elegant swans and a Mammoth. Fresh air in an oasis and a real gem.
N. H.
Lovely walk around the lakes.
S. M.
Alex did a very professional job installing my boiler. Very efficient and kept me updated throughout the day. Even though the replacement boiler was smaller than my original boiler there was very little cosmetic work to be done afterwards. Very friendly and I would highly recommend Alex.
b.
The are two main car parks, north and south. We parked in the north.
It was £2.50 for the day, very reasonable charges for these days.
There is a large pub just outside the gates, and a canal path perfect for arriving by cycle.
You can easily spend a day wandering round the park, it's massive, with lots of wildlife to see, and many picnic areas to relax in.
It was quiet when we visited, we only saw around a dozen people, or just maybe the park does a good job of swallowing up it's visitors
K. O.
A green oasis in the Soar Valley. Managed as a country park it is a haven for wild life and families offering country walks, cycle trails, canal walks, fishing lakes, bird watching, wind surfing /paddle boarding a great place to walk your dog and enjoy a family day out. The main ( and by far the best) carpark off Wanlip Road Nr the Hope and Anchor charges £2-50 on entry all other carparks are free and they can be found opposite Sainsburys, Melton Road,on Alderton Close and at Thurmaston,Mill Lane and Birstall, Meadow Lane. Love it, we walk our dog Molly a Cavalier King Charles here every day.
D. M.
This is a fantastic facility a great area to exercise, explore, walk dogs, run and so on.
P. H.
First visit, but will be back soon to do a lap of entire park and the new Covid Memorial Walk.
B. B.
Walked round the South lakes well worth a visit also mammoth near the south car park
-.
Walked 4 miles to go to the toilet here. Pretty fire worth it. 11/10 will piss again.
H. S.
Brilliant Place to visit with kids, clean abd beautiful scenery, good long walks around the lakes.
T. I.
Great place a walk, free parking off Melton Rd Opposite the big Sainsbury shop. Always an ice cream van on site.
L. G.
Beautiful giant country park surrounding a wonderful lake. Came here with kids and they had a marvellous time
B. N.
Lovely to see the swans and ducks, but shocked to see how many rats and mice were scuttling around in the undergrowth! Makes you feel a bit wary especially if you have little one's with you.
P. F.
Beautiful place to walk with dogs!!!!
A. J.
Lovely walks and set out really well
Great for dogs, highly recommend a visit :-)
M. O.
Great area for to walk for all the family. Lots of wildlife to see also!
S. C.
Love a walk round even seen exotic wildlife a turtle sunbathing on a tree
T. C.
Great place for a walk around the lakes. Dog friendly, although if your dog loves water be aware that the water can at times be stagnant and smelly especially in the summer. Very large park. Various car parks around the park from Thurmaston, Birstal and Wanlip.some toilets at the North end. No cafe but usually ice cream Van's in the summer. Great for kids and riding bikes.
T. F.
Great for relaxing walks around the lakes Pubs near by
F.
Wow picked a lovely day to come here, lots to do, bring the children for a picnic, go cycling, a steady walk around the picturesque watermead lakes on a hot sunny day, walk the dog, sit on a bench in a quiet spot and just watch the view and the wild fowl or the boats on the lake, or the sun on the water, or even take yourself off and go fishing on your own or with friends,
At Watermead lakes, there is plenty of car park spaces, pay and display, a family picnic area, bridges, barges, and what amazed me were the amount of beautiful dragon flys of all sizes and colours really amazing buzzing by as you take in the views, there was also a coffee cart here too and an ice cream van you will have a lovely days out here, where you can go nature watching In man made hide outs to watch birds, or go sailing in your boat, cycling, running, walk the dog, sit and enjoy the beautiful views with plenty of benches, this has plenty to offer you will not be disappointed.
L. S.
Great place. Well looked after and lovely for a nice walk
K. M.
Excellent place to walk lazily around the lake on a summer's day.
M. K.
Lovely park and great for walks
J. S.
Wonderful piece of nature near to the city. Paved walkways and beautiful scenery. Lots if wildlife and good parking at all locations
S. D.
Nice place to wander around for one to two hours, and some good bird watching opportunities.
S. A.
A well maintained urban park a nice get away from it all, lakes, canals, country walks. You wouldn't believe your surrounded by trunk roads and housing estates. Worth a visit if your at a lose end in the Leicester area.
G. W.
What a lovely place, with some unexpected denizens like this grass snake.
S. S.
One of my favourite places to run or go for a walk. Lots of places to sit and chill in the summer. When it's flooded though some of the paths are hard to cross unless you've got wellies :)
P. H.
Very popular area to visit. Lots to do. I cycled but Lots of walkers, joggers and dog walkers. Unfortunately so people can't clean up after themselves.
R. W.
Great for walking the dog 🐕.
K. J.
On a warm summer's day, we took a picnic. Great isolated place in the busy city.
C. B.
I go to Watermead Country park quite often it's so relaxing just taking time out with nature.
Sitting looking over the lake with all the beautiful birds swimming around.
You can cycle or walk round children really love it use some of their energy up.
We had a great day out
D. H.
Had a great two nights fishing on here. Couldn’t believe I had a 37lb carp as well as 3 upper 20lbs. Made out I was fishing the canal after dusk when the bailiff came round he said I couldn’t night fish it. All 7 bites I had came in the night. What a lake. Few bream to get through. But wow. Just wow
D. A.
Nice walks or cycle tracks easy cheap parking at £2.50 all day. Very pleasant calming area.
I. N.
I never been at this part ot the park before. Looks nice and quite. We went to visit the reserve but was closed. We went to see the animal sculptures but because of covid closed as well.
D. O.
Always a great walk. I really enjoy going regularly and see the seasons change the outlook 👍
C. R.
Why do we have to pay at the north entrance?
S. W.
It's a great place to take the dogs or just go for a walk. Unfortunately there are a few people who are not happy in their natural habitat unless they are surrounded by their own litter. The car park is full of litter, the paths are full of litter and the lakes are full of litter, disgusting humans.
D. W.
Lovely peaceful place to walk or just have lunch and look at the scenery
M. P.
Hidden gem of Leicester. I live so close to it but never been here. This lockdown bought me and my family here. We all loved it. Great place to go for a walk/cycle. Kids love it.
A. T.
I walk down here with my Charlie dog. He's friendly with other dogs. You can walk for miles and miles. It's a truly beautiful place.
V. P.
Gorgeous place to go for long walks with the dog and the children love it! We're lucky we live just a 5 minute walk away but I think you can park for free in some car parks.
n. k.
Nice place for a relaxing walk and cycle ride. Keep an eye on the maps as the routes can be a little confusing to follow.
I. F.
Nice place to be.
R. K.
Great country park with nice views. Very nice for birds lovers with many of hides across the park.
Parking is a bit expensive but offers ample spaces. Fantastic place to ride bikes. Enjoy!
K. C.
Always nice to go here for a walk every now and then.
J. H.
Lovely place, but you will have to pay for parking.
J. B.
Beautiful place , nice tarmac main pathways around the lovely lakes with swans and a lot of other wild life, very clean , lots of off the main track winding walkways to explore , plenty of benches and dog litter bins, the only downside is some cyclists go too fast and you can't hear them coming , but most are very considerate, ample parking several car parks 👍
C. M.
Lovely place to spend the day or an afternoon. Many walks of different lengths alongside waterways, mainly flat terrain and most with clear path. Carpark, toilets and ice cream vans on site. There's a pub just across the road from the entrance too!
A. S.
Great for a day out either with mates or family or even just a short visit eg walking the dog or going for a jog. Spacious car park so it’s easily accessible and it’s good to just have a walkabout and look around
R. S.
Great walk for the whole family. Wildlife is abundant and amazing. Canal walk and woodland walk was awesome
P. B.
Restricted access today as pipe laying being carried out on canal side of king lears lake. Used tow path as alternative. Apart from that it was very good.
N. G.
great place to go for a walk or cycle ride. there are two car parks, the one closest to the city is smaller but free to park. As the park is so large and split into two then it's worth parking at both so you can explore more next time you visit !
M. G.
The paths have a lot of litter, food has been left by the river bank, the canal has lots of rubbish in it. This spoils the park when you go for a walk. Some people also forget about social distancing if they are in a group.
A. A.
It was a nice day out for my family. This part is well managed and very clean. We caught a bus from the city centre. It is perfect for walking, cycling and dog walking as well.
I has car park.

K.
A great place for a long walk or bike ride. Would be good though if some cyclists used a bell to warn you that they were behind you!
P. P.
Truly beautiful place for a good walk
C. L.
Love this spot! Peaceful, Clean, with long walks & plenty of sports to participate in.
R. W.
Nice walk along the river, £2.50 to park but best to park over the road in the pub and get a beer for your money and just walk across to the lake after.
S. W.
Lovely place for a walk... Would have been 5 but facilities still shut
G. A.
A nice place for a walk or cycle away from traffic. Excellent use of what once was gravel pits I believe.
C. P.
Great for a walk or bike picnic large lakes you can go from syston to leicester or birstall or thurmaston without being all the traffic try it hidden gem no cafe though just icecream van in carpark
D. E.
Extensive wetland habitats and leisure facilities. Plenty of well surfaced walks that link up with variety of locations for shopping, eating and drinking. Take the towpath south to the city or head on out into the riverine countryside to the north.
M. B.
Great green and water space for the family. Tarmac paths for the children to cycle and scooter. Good for running too, but parking isn't cheap.
L.
Nice place, but if BBQ not allowed-why not snacks or hot dogs for sale,a few tables only if you are want to bring yours own food here, only one toilet.
D. b.
This is a great day out, ìt doesn't matter your age as this place is great for all ages, the wild life is great to see as you walk round the grounds.
C. K.
Always worth a visit with level treated surfaces for walkers and cyclists alike.Parking at boating lake end pricey at £2.50 when elsewhere free .
S. L.

Natural park
H. B.
Great for walking, cycling, dog walking, paddle boarding , and sailing and bird watching, miniature boat sailing during the summer, great for photography, there is a lot of pot holes that need filling in it has a nature reserve, open Monday to wednesday , closes 3,pm, no b,b,q allowed, no swimming, sometimes the water gets a toxic blue green algae during the summer ,not good for dogs or animals. Good for picknic s, please take your rubbish.home, coffee and ice cream during summer months, at the moment it is 2 pound 50 pence admission, for the day, pay by cash or card, this can be difficult if the sun is on the instructions, beware of barrier, only go on green,do not tail gate another vehicle this will result in your vehicle been damaged ,you can also get a yearly subscription. It is amazing that the children's maze has just opened, please don't blame covid after all these years, before opening the ground people should have cleared the brambles from the edge of the maze, still waiting for the pot holes to be filled in on the roads . When you are walking on the paths, be aware of the cyclists that brush by you at speed without ringing a bell or an excuse me, this path is for walkers, cyclists alike.I would like to ask the people who run the watermead country park ,when are you going to install the so called temporary toilets ,you say they have been ordered but this sign has been up for ages, and the toilets have been closed for years, what a disgrace ☹️. These toilets are a disgrace and should be knocked down , they are covered in graffiti a total embarrassing situation for people visiting this lovely park this should not go on for any longer. On the Sat. morning run, where do the runners go to the toilet ?. One other thing, the park has new signs fitted around the park in the form of information maps ,please ignore directions for the toilets on John Merrick lake,THEY ARE SHUT,It would be nice if the Wardens put a sign up informing the public that they are closed .If you wish to make a complaint about lack of toilet facilities please write to County Hall ref.
John Merrick toilets, Leicester Rd, Glenfield Leicester LE 3 8RA 🥴20.12 21
14:30. Went for a walk in the Reedbed reserve with my wife and son who is in a wheelchair, nothing unusual about that ,we do this most days when the reserve is open, it closes at 15.00. Today we entered the reserve from the small car park entrance, whilst I was getting the wheelchair ready I waved at the warden as he went by in his vehicle, he acknowledged me, nothing unusual about that we give a wave to each other on previous times .All was well until we reached the other end and found the large gate locked, causing distress, and very annoying we had to negotiate through a small gap with briers, causing bruising to my hand, when I had to lift the wheelchair to clear the gate.I photographed the locked gates showing 14:30 on my watch, half hour before it should be locked, two out of three gates were locked. In my opinion this is a health and safety issue, at least at the gates they should have the Wardens telephone number nearby.
I would like to add that this park closes at 17:00.This time may change as the days get lighter.28.04.22 Please note this time has been extended to 19.00 😀There has been a number of steel structures been erected around the John Merrick lake, depicting various animals, insects and a Hereon these look so out of place, it makes me wonder if they have been put there to stop the fishermen from 🎣 fishing, the fishermen pay good money for the right to fish🥴.I would like to know how much this art work cost, it is my opinion. that this money could have been spent more wisely to put in a much needed TOILET BLOCK 🥴.Why didn't the people who run John Merrick lake, and I mean those at County Hall, commission the Woodcutter at Beacon Hill to do wood carvings instead, I am sure that they would fit in better? I know they look good at Beacon Hill...The wood carvings in the Maze look great, in my opinion any way, a lesson should have been learnt here.
