Reviews of Derby Market Hall
H. B.
Lovely building that truly bustled with shoppers in it's heyday. Looking a little sad nowadays due to many stalls being left empty. Could do with more retailers taking up the empty stalls and bring vibrancy back to this great indoor market. Having said that the retailers trading in the market hall are a friendly helpful bunch and you can still find a good variety of products to buy.
m. j.
A bit disappointing not many stalls like there used to be but the stalls that are there are all useful and got what you need so it's OK and the Christmas decorations or features are lovely
D. H.
I love this place, an olde worlde indoor Victorian market hall that is not used to it's full potential, some stalls are lying empty. I fear that if it is not used more and more it may close and that will be a real shame. Prices are good, stall holders are friendly and helpful and goods are of a high quality. Well worth a visit when in town. If you need a cuppa use the cafe outside the main entrance, cheaper than inside the Intu Centre
M. S.
It's a little tired and in need of renovation but saying that what stalls were there, were well stocked and very knowledgeable about there goods and services that they were offering. It's just a shame that the landlords must be asking for a lot of rent, therefore there is a lot of empty stalls. If this could be addressed that would be fantastic. I think the owners of the actual market have a lot to answer for. They could do a lot more to attract more vendors to there market thus making it more attractive to customers.
N. K.
Really nice building especially for those that like architecture. The stalls all looked well stocked with nice products but none were very busy. Pity the market wasn't better used. I hope the council can help this historical buildings and the market thrive again.
A. M.
Derby has a number of markets. The Market Hall has recently been revamped. It is a traditional market and is more than worth a visit when in Derby. You can walk straight from the Market Hall into Derby Market Place.
L. S.
Beautiful design inside this building and only a few stores are open at the moment, the market hall is having more new fixtures at the moment hence why there's not many open .
J. B.
Katz and co craft is a brilliant place to go to get creative. Don't be put off by the lack of other shops and scaffolding. Kate is valid very knowledgeable artist and will give you good advice about the motorcyclist she sells
L. Y. H.
Love the variety of stalls! There is a place for sweets, fruits and veggies, pets, art, eco friendly, fabrics, crafts.. Very lovely to visit and support smaller businesses
M. O.
You can get anything and usually things you need and make. A haberdashery with everything you can, t get anywhere else. A Jewelery shop, friut and veg shop and they have done it all up too.
J. B.
My favourite shopping place in Derby, full of reliable, friendly, great value independent stalls. Historic location, currently undergoing considerable renovation as of 2019 but it's still open throughout the works.
C. M.
I hope there are more traders that consider moving into the market hall once renovations are finished. It saddens me that, a once so busy market hall, only probably half of the stalls are occupied. Maybe Derby City Council should suggest some incentives to local businesses. I have to add Flowers By Joy offers the most beautiful arrangements and bouquets at the best prices in Derby. It would have been 5 stars if there were more stalls inside the market hall
M. R.
See my review of the Eagle market. It's about the same as this really. Beautiful building and the stalls are great but sadly this too needs an incentive to get stall holders interested in the many vacant stalls. DCC needs to halve the rent and get some life back in there
M. F.
Cozy atmosphere caused by the false ceiling while the main roof, high above, is repaired. Staff are working hard to make people welcome. All the usual stalls seem to be open. Many bargens and well worth a visit.
I. B.
It seems to be a shadow of its former self, but there are still some good stalls including a model shop I didn't know was there, addressing a shortage in Derby. Hopefully when the renovation is complete, it'll regain it's reputation as a good place to shop
G. M.
Wonderful building with fantastic potential. The problem is stalls keep closing down, the more close down, footfall drops and it's more difficult for the rest. The council need a proper plan for Derby's markets. There are still plenty of good stalls here - magazine, tobacco, coffee, Italian deli etc.
R.
Small and quaint market however under renavation not many stalls/shops but for the few that are there its a nice oldfashioned atmosphere. Sadly the council are being gready with their rent rates, I've recently been told which makes it expensive for new small business and existing traders.
B. B.
Hopefully this will once again be a good venue once the extensive reconstruction work is done. At the moment there are lots of empty stalls and shops, a sign of the times maybe. The scaffolding, while necessary, is a bit of an eyesore.
E. M.
Great little indoor market with loads of interesting stalls all very keenly priced. I purchased from a lovely lady selling haberdashery with the cheapest ribbons I've ever seen even better than online. There is a excellent cosmetics stall towards the back with such a friendly couple running it who didn't mind I was taking forever browsing the Nail varnishes, they even helped me find the perfect Halloween orange! Definitely look forward to returning and exploring even more stalls
M. H.
A really wonderful building. There are still quite a few traders inside despite awful Derby City Council paying very little care to this historic market the was once thriving. Still worth a visit. Lovely cafe on balcony
P. H.
The market is a good place to shop but not much room to move due to all the scaffolding still worth a visit
L. A.
Lovely place, although it's in the middle of restoration there is a great diversity in stalls. For those who like to browse it's an oasis upstairs and down.
A. T.
Always liked the mini market, contains a couple a cafes, a pretty cool retro toy shop on the first floor and a memorabilia style shop, from tool stands, a proper butchers and a shop that still sells scalectrix and Airfix its worth a visit .
N. D.
Great place needs more shops
j. h.
Nice for a wander. I do wonder how it stays open as it is always empty. Undergoing renovations which seem to be taking forever. Some cheap plants to be had.
N. C.
The remaining stallholders must be distraught by the business that has been taken away from them by the nearby Eagle Centre. If however, you want traditional foods and goods provided by friendly local people then this is the place to go.
I got my hand made Derbyshire Oatcakes and Pyclets from the market.
S. M.
Some great little local shops in here.
L. P.
I love the market hall. It was the place to go and find a bargin. The works going on there is taking forever. Can not wait for the scaffolding to go.
D. P.
A great selection of stalls all under one roof
M. P.
Great views good food nice staff
M. G.
It's a shame how this place is being allowed to slowly die like this most of the stalls are empty and the Chinese can build a hospital in 7 days and our council cant repair a roof in less than 2 years and counting very sad to see it like this.
L. H.
Always enjoy a walk around the market.
T. D.
I love the old world feel of the place and it has real character! it is a breath of fresh air compared to high street shopping and only needs to be filled up with various specialist traders to become vibrant and busy again!
T. H.
Get those other stalls up and running..its xmas. Should be filled by now. It's a brill market. Best stall is that fantastic sweet stall. I'm from loughborough area and keep comming back so it's very good. We enjoy and look forward to comming here.
S. J.
Is starting to look a little sad. Perhaps if Derby city council charged more competitive rents, and actually promoted it this may not be the case as it stands half the stalls are empty and the foot fall is much reduced from what it once was.
T. G.
Very polite, helpful staff. Well spaced tables and booths.
Great array of restaurants and easy ordering via the app.
R. H.
A wonderful example of Victorian architecture. Embellishing the more mundane buildings to an aesthetic all of their own. Stalls are good too.
S.
It'll look lovely again when the work eventually finishes and we can see the place
p. d.
I adore this place. Great Market when I can purchase anything thing from a scorch bonnet to a pouch of Golden Virginia. Love the independent stalls.
G. B.
The blame for this place being half empty lies squarely with the corrupt labour run derby city council who lack vision and any sense of commercial awareness. Maybe of you introduced favourable rates and free parking, you would find occupancy go up and then build resistance into the rent. London markets would cry out for a building like this!
L. M.
Got everything I needed, wonderful quality and no excessive packaging or supermarket queues!
G. N. (.
It's a weird one. It's like kind of vacant but there's people there. There's run down shops and stuff, it seems like a caricature. I just walk through sometimes to see it. Good veg stand if you want veg.
D. W.
A. D.
Lots of work currently underway to keep this excellent Derby shopping area alive and kicking.
Well done to Derby for preserving this listed building.
Use it or lose it folks.
C. D.
Its nice little place with a upper floor there is a lift here too. There is a cafe and toilets here too. There is a small variety of trade here. Its not like it use to be like but its still nice to shop
M. R.
Quite a few shops, bit under utilised but can only blame internet for that.good cafes, electrical shop deserves special mention,as he keeps huge stock..fruit and veg good.hope it keeps going..
L. E.
Good selection of stalls over most items. The fresh foods stalls were very good and the electrical goods section showed an amazing selection of items.
C. B.
Can't wait till the improvements end.
Y.
I love the market it has Unique shops in it
M. F.
Empty. Not many stalls selling. My kids commented that it smelled bad. I expected to see a good variety of different things for sale.Something interesting.Disappointing!
G. M.
Great to see a market still going. Not as many stalls now but is getting modernised so hopefully will fill up agai.
M. C.
Nice safe place 2 visit.
C. W.
Good variety of stalls and good prices too
N. W.
A great indoor space with an eclectic mix of really good market stalls. Coffee and snacks too. Well worth a visit. Deserves to be more popular.
p. t.
Just starting to get a vibe about the place what with Bunny's etc then this damn pandemic comes along, hopefully back to normal sooner rather than later.
M. L.
Not alot if stalls, the council need to do more to encourage more and new business
C. G.
I'm hoping that when all the works are done it would attract more visitors as I know that the traders are struggling, let's see if the council can make this happen and all the best to all the traders, let's hope it all goes well
S. A.
Everything in one place.. good spectrum of shopping genres..
S. P. C.
Great trip back in time ? Not a lot open because of the virus but will definitely go back when everything is back to normal lol
D. N.
Brilliant .what more could anyone ask for .it has everything
T. D. H.
Not too sure what's going on. Alot of work being done. The shop are small and nice like the small shop you'd have on the corner where you know the people who own it and chat with them.
J. P.
Love derby market hall ,needs more stalls open like the old days but lovely selection of stuff
M. N.
It really needs more stalls. looks a bit sad and lonely! have been visiting for 20 years and can see the sad decline in a once vibrant market
F. A.
At the moment it's a bit dark inside as it's under remodeling, but all the mechents are still there and going strong. Come in to support local buisenes!
L. C.
Got my watch straps replaced. Love the market Hall. It's got great history. Shame not so many stalls open.
M. B.
Wife went nosing such a shame theyspoilt it from years ago when I remember.Derbyin th 50s and 60s taking away the character
M. W.
Steeped in history, been going to this market for over 40 years and its changed a lot. I would hate to lose it. Various stalls offering good quality cheep food.
J. S.
Definitely improving and looks like it will be fabulous when the workmen and scaffolding have gone and new roof plus WiFi fully installed.
S. J. B.
Excellent chilled shopping centre
D. G.
Will be better when all the renovations are done
P. G.
Visited for DCFC exhibition upstairs which was interesting and brought back some happy memories
D. T.
Be better when all the work is done pity people of Derby don't support it more
L. F.
Okay place to have a visit and explore what's on offer
N. D.
A stunning building. Why are Derby having this ridicuolus expensive consultation process to decide what to do with the old Assembly room when the answer is stood in front of them. Put the market in the Assembly rooms with some modernisation to turn it in to a market come art and craft center then put the money they have into turning the Market hall into a performance space and exhibition centre like the Gmex in Manchester or the Design centre in Islingtkn London. Why build another building no one likes
J. S.
Great idea for eating outside and easy to use.
P. B.
Good stalls better when it is refurbished and back to normal
G. P. 2.
More shops required, but great people running stalls, shame some hall staff are a bit too official and power mad.
D. B.
Still undergoing roof repairs, but still very nice Period Building.
L. W.
Will be good when renovations finished I think. Some quality stalls with good variety of products. Hope it's a success.
P. C.
This is a really great place. If you don't want to have a faceless supermarket. Get your self in here it's a great place. And really plenty of bargains.
J. S.
Great place to shop
M. M.
Fab..but needs thoses empty stalls filling up. The downstairs little market is a bit samey..needs a modern twist and look.
C. A.
Its under renovation so I can't fully review it
H. G.
Very interesting market to visit.
C. B.
A Victorian building renovated in the 80s a selection of filled stalls is available, although smaller than the nearby Eagle market I find a useful selection of goods
F. E.
I like the market hall, it's the last remnant of what feels like a real market in Derby. There's a bit of something for everyone. Nice fruit and veg stalls, ladys nightwear and underwear, plants, and I had a new battery in my watch for only £4.50p fitted for me
M. B.
Market Hall is quiet, but thankfully the only place where I found one illusive present!
N. C.
It will get better when the work has finished
G. H.
It's. Good for the local community
s. s.
As with many markets this is struggling, many empty stalls. Shame because the traders that are there offer a decent range of products at reasonable prices.
S. C.
It will be nice when fully renovated
L. C.
Would like to see more stores in Market Hall. I remember from sixties lots of market stores. Favourite stores Poyntons news store and the pet store ( sorry can't remember the name)
A. S.
Threads, what a nostalgia trip this way, remembering all the "vintage" clothes from the first time round. Anyone mid 40's with any of that stuff in their lofts would make a fortune!!!
D. M. (.
Undergoibg a refurb. Half tge stalls empty. Hopefully landlords will charge sensible rents so retailers want to be there.
P. S.
Well it's a bit of a mess with all the scaffolding at the moment I feel so sorry for the traders.
h. b.
Lots of empty shops. Some very good shops ,vegetable market is cheap and a place does nice bread/baked goods. Lots of places for fabric.
A. S.
Not much in the market could do with new stalls and help the other stall holder's
G. L.
Such a shame this market is on the decline, more empty stalls than occupied stalls.
P. S.
A traditional market hall. Great cast iron structure. Variety of interesting traditional and non-traditional stalls.
D. C.
I found the whole situation to be a sorry mess.. these hard working stall holders deserve so much better ..shame on the city council...🙄
I. M. G.
Lovely place older building being brought back to life with trades coming into the place most are small businesses and they are lovely people cheap and cheerful.
E. M.
Lovely old building with lots of friendly stallholders. Pyclets are tasty as hell and the events they do there are cracking!
A. M.
It's a great market hall and at the moment because of the work being done just go to see the scaffolding it's a work of art
R.

J. T. C.
Typical market hall, like the interior of this market. It's very clean and very well managed.
A. L.
Revisiting Derby market after leaving 40 yrs ago. Still looks the same and reminiscing over the Crumpet and pikelet sales stalls in the entrance. Derby town centre is undergoing a big clean up. Some super nightspots and bars as well as the old traditional pubs. Compared to many the town centre seems to be thriving.
M. l.
Firstly, the picture associated with this place is in fact wrong and represents the intu shopping centre not the market hall, I often shop in this market. The chilled deli store is excellent quality and regularly but my fridge bits here as is the plant stall in the market. My home has been made to look a little like a indoor garden with the excellent variety of indoor plants I've purchased as well as floral tributes I buy for remembrance occasions and the lady cant do enough to help. Always bring my own and the families custom to this stall.
D. H.
Great indoor market. Covering mobile phones, fruit and veg stalls and a gallery of little shops
D. C.
Few small stands, model stall pretty good for collectable vehicles
R. B.
Nice pleasant building. Plenty of variety of stalls.
C. P.
Derby Market Hall is an outstanding example of a mid nineteenth century town market hall. It is currently undergoing renovation but unfortunately it has, for many years, been a much underused asset. It would make a great place in the evening for bars and cafès and daytime specialist food outlets, particularly if the Assembly Rooms reopen.
M. D.
Lovely now it is refurbished. Very trending eating/ drinking venue.
G. C.
A free to enter MAZE. But the stalls are still there. Plenty of choice and friendly people.
S. S.

Derbys hidden gem! An Aladdin cave of fabulous small local businesses!!
D. S.
Ailing, historical Market Hall, with dwindling occupancy. Needs help from the people of Derby, as the City Council doesn't appear to know what to do.
