Reviews of Durham Market Hall
nice little look round in here has a cafe upstairs which we had a bite to eat
Great selection of shops and lovely friendly traders. You will find things in here without going on the internet!
An old fashioned indoor market full of small trader's
Often overlooked by visitors to the city and not posh enough for the students who want everything for next to nothing.
Good range of stalls. Aisles rather narrow. Stairs to cafe are ridiculously tricky to negotiate, being steep, narrow and made of smooth metal.
A great place with a mixed bad of shops. Compared to other places, this Market Hall is nearly always full of retailers. A beautiful building in a truly beautiful city.
A wide variety of market stalls, something for everyone. Nice cafe upstairs too.
All under cover indoor market lots of shops and a lovely pub by entrance
Great place for independent retailers
Clean and tidy
Nice café
Toilets very clean
So clean not one bit of litter would recommend to anyone who is thinking of visiting Durham
Great place to walk round,do shopping and have some coffee.
Fantastic place ,big variety of stalls easy for disabled people clean ,well thought out.
Like browsing around good DIY stalls, nice cafe upstairs, always good food and staff friendly
Great selection of shops and a comfortable cafe
Brilliant place everyone is really helpful cafe upstairs is lovely and reasonably priced
I love Durham market but rarely go into town now , mostly due to parking issues which are set to get worse and the fact lots of businesses have been squeezed out of town plus I don't like the way the city council have altered the historic market place.
Good old fashioned indoor market, lots of little unusual stalls.
Great selection of stalls, particularly like the fishmonger and cheesemonger
This reminded me of Fleetwood market. Very good and excellent cafe upstairs.
This was the coolest spot in Durham. There were several different markets set up. They would haggle too. Loved walking through and seeing what all was to offer. Great for passing the day.
Great selection of local produce. Has a cafe and toilet facilities within.
Variety of stalls to buy what you need. Cafe is a nice place to have a cuppa. Friendly staff, great service
Everything you need under one roof. A fab market, lovely people. Really traditional feel about it. Was a great visit.
Interesting old fashioned indoor market.

Nice indoor market, food in cafe cenno, well worth the money and is delicious
An absolute treasure trove of shopping stalls. Excellent heritage feeling to it as well
This place is a nice. There is a tonne of stalls with clutter overflowing everywhere. Would be nice if they cleaned up the retail space a bit. A tonne of potential for this spot. Demographic mostly seniors from neighboring villages that have coffee and do little grocery shopping. Definitely worth checking out. You can find a everything you want if you are up for an adventure.
Good few shops in the market cafe does top bacon sarni

Still a good to visit wide range of retailers selling products at reasonable prices

Great market, with lots of great stalls. Cafe is excellent and great for meals, with fast service and great staff. The market is a must too look around.
Be nice if the times that are state on the website that a trader is open would be correct turned up under the impression a trader was open at 9am and at 9.15 they were not open and I had made a special journey just to go to this one traders stalll. It is unacceptable that the times are not kept to so please change the times on your website to reflect when a trader will actually open
Very good bargains, opens at 9 in the morning. Variety of shops etc. Great place to visit for fresh food from the butchers
Brilliant shopping experience, lots of street entertainment for the kids and adults together.

Reasonably good selection of stalls and café. Don't make the mistake of thinking stuff will be cheaper because it's a market.

Tucked away down two doorways off the main market square, the indoor market always feels like a bit of a secret! It's got some unusual stalls, like an armourer and a spice merchant, a good haberdashery stall, fishmongers, butchers, bakers and a wide selection of miscellaneous others. And a cafe! Well worth half an hour to explore and find some bargains.
If your phone needs repair definitely go and check on Paul at stall 45. Fixed my iPhone screen for a great price in double quick time.

Was a bit disappointed to be honest. There are a few hidden gems to be found here, but for the most part it was a bit down trodden, crowded and clearly a hotspot for thieves.

Updated - if the arrows have been removed and it's now up to the public to keep a safe distance, great. It means I can now pop in for small items without having to walk the whole market! Thank you Durham Market hall for your reply on my review.
*The arrows on the floor mean you walk places you don't need to walk!*

Old fashioned, quirky maze. Lots of interesting stalls
Lovely traditional indoor market.
Old fashioned markets. I enjoyed walking around here.
The Market Hall, known locally as the indoor market, announces itself as Durham's Independent Department Store. Not a bad description. Stalls include fruit and veg, meat, shoes and clothes, hardware and soft furnishings, toys and cards, books and videos. There is a cafe with public toilets and even a store guide and security.
The prices and range of goods serves local people from the surrounding villages well. It has a great atmosphere, with laughter frequently punctuating the friendly banter. But it's not the kind of place Durham's (mostly affluent) students would frequent.
Saturday is a good day to come as the outdoor market attracts quite a crowd. The Market Square is a good place to sit and chat or watch passers-by and there are often special events.
It was great a variation of stalls and a cafe

A great array of artisan stalls and those type of stalls that people find hard to find elsewhere. health foods, phone and watch repairs, floor coverings, cleaning and DIY supplies, gift stall, antiques, plants, Turkish homewards, electrical goods and hardware, locksmiths, dance wear, flowers, fossils, etc. Worth a couple of hours of your time, spend some money, have a coffee and a cake and help their businesses.

Proper market.
Good place in Ashton to shop.
As a local in Durham I regularly call into the centre at lunchtime. For food I would highly recommend the Akins Bakery (you can get straight there through the back alley between St. Nicholas' church and the city hall). They do some fantastic pasties and if they ever have it in pick up a slice of Russian cake, amazing stuff!
If Pizza's more your thing the Brooklyn Pizza Slice also sells some fantastic pizza slices.
[Since writing this review the Akins Bakery has closed in the indoor market due to a retirement of the staff running this branch. There is still a store though that sells Akins products just inside when entering through the entrance closest to the end where St. Nicholas' church is on the market square.
Brooklyn Pizza Slice has also moved and now has it's own store on North Road close to the Sainsbury's Local]

This is a fantastic place and a must visit if you're at Durham, plenty stalls to look at, I would highly recommend the wet fish stall and the cheese/deli stall. Nice place to call in for hot food to take away from stalls and the licensed cafe upstairs does fantastic food to sit down and eat.
An amazing indoor & historic market slap bang in the city centre that is well supported with local traders offering quality produce. There are a few stalls outside on the Saturday I was there.. If a 1st timer consider the "Park & Ride" which takes you into the city centre.
Nice little market, good book stall some nice local produce with unusual and difficult to find ingredients. Definitely worth a visit.
The market is quite large it has a lot of stalls in side also a place where you can sit and buy a good meal

Great market with one of the best Butchers in town tucked away in the corner. My nephew loves going to the dinosaur fossil stall and I love the fabulous shoe store at the back. The outdoor market has a lovely host of street food and artisan stalls as well.
Just great to visit Durham and all the places, shop's, market's, etc plenty of history there.
The phone guy... Paul is friendly & very good with customers, a nice guy & wont rip you off. Very good with my uncle, who lives in supported living. Always has the time for him. Highly recommend.

Surprisingly spacious with quite a good variety of stalls, worth a quick look if your in the area
Outdoor pursuits. Have moved from down stairs ,into the main hall.
Where the pipe shop used to be.
They still give a first class service and have a great variety of stuff in shop plus the knowledge to go with it.
Good luck on this new stage of the venture.
Great old school market with a good selection of shops, well worth a visit.
Love Durham market, just the place it's in is fascinating. It has a decent mix of stalls to browse. Have to visit as it's been around since 1850.
Fabulous stalls and friendly staff, cafe definitely worth a visit.
Good little market always find what I want. Decent stuff as well
Good selection of shops. Not too many empty stalls. Can recommend.
Got my cowboy t-shirt there
Great place full of really good shops. Can get a little cramped in here though.
Great very local Market Hall and the outdoor market too. You might find food and other things that you can't find anywhere else. Surely recommendable if you're visiting Durham
Excellent place loads to look at recommend it
Really good market very friendly store holders, you never know what you might be able to get.
Love Durham market hall it has a vast range of stalls.100% better than Darlington indoor market which has been decimated by the new owners, which is a shame because it was a good indoor market. There's a saying if it ain't broke don't fix it!
The indoor market at Durham is a wonderful place to visit. Open 6 days a week, there are numerous stalls here including a fishmonger, butcher and bakery. There is a lovely cafe upstairs and it is easy to spend time here.
It's ok, there are some nice shops like the fish monger and green grocers, but overall it's very disappointing in comparison to the Newcastle one. I know it's a lot smaller, but street food-wise there's nothing. You'd think there would be some choice, at least.
It's also very packed in and hard to navigate. I think they could improve business a lot by widening up the walkways and making it much more welcoming, even if there were less room for traders. The opening hours are also very poor, closing at least an hour earlier than all of the shops in the centre do. I'm sure many traders would be happy to open longer if allowed.
Overall I'd recommend whomever manages it to go visit Newcastle's markethall on a Saturday and see the difference. The street food and walkability is what attracts people in, allowing the less profitable businesses to thrive.
Lovely traditional city market. Lot's of different types of stalls. Well worth a visit
A really nice indoor Market just about anything you need is there
Really good selection of independent retailers. Many of the stalls have been here a long time and are really knowledgeable about what they sell.
Great indoor market. What ever your shopping for , or just needing somewhere to eat . You'll find it here.
It's alright not very organised seems like every thing is on top of everything all bunched together. Still quite quaint worth a visit.
It's a really nice small market to explore and one can find almost everything!
First time for years guitar shop was not open after Christmas holidays.
Used veg stall very friendly.
Great place to buy anything.
Historic undercover market hall in Durham market place. Some really good stalls selling books, quality footwear, records/cds, fresh fish, butchers, cakes, toys, tobacco and loads more besides. On the upper level is a cafe which looks out over the market. Worth a wander round.
I love visiting this place whenever i'm in Durham. There are lots of unique stalls selling everything from jewellery to food. Its inside so no matter what the weather is, you can browse till your heart's content. The retailers are all super friendly and nothing is ever too much bother for them. If your after a unique gift or just want a bargain, visit here, you won't be disappointed!
A place worth a visit. Go and see for yourself. A great selection of independent traders all friendly with a restaurant upstairs 👌
Nice unique stuff for sell.
Good old fashioned market gud cafe upstairs
Amongst the usual market stalls which are great and sell the stuff we all need: you will also find real artisans and specialist traders that are absolute diamonds. Please support local traders.
Lovely, cheap a d good food upstairs at cafe Cenno.
Quite a Nice little market in the square. Indoor market is great too.
Love this old indoor Victorian Market,I was born in a mining village near Durham although that's long gone, so used to come here as a child with my family, I was fascinated by this wonderful market, now it's many years later and live near Darlington now but always go back to Durham and first place I head for is the market, it doesn't seemed to have changed much, think there's about 60 stalls, everything you need, people are very friendly and helpful, and of course upstairs there is a great cafe, plenty to choose from and very reasonable price, you can spend ages in this market you get the feel you have gone back in time, you can't go to Durham and not pay this place a visit.
A traditional English market hall with a good selection of stalls from greengrocers and butchers to guitars and pizza counters, via household goods and watch repairers. Always spotlessly clean and fresh, it's a good place to just browse, even if you are not expecting to buy anything!
Quite a nice clean busy place and very nice just to have a walk around.also I must say the cafe on the top of the market is highly recommended a cracking cup of tea or coffee nice pleasant staff, do a cracking bacon sandwich what else do you want
Great choice of articles and produce available.Very popular, well worth a visit.
A great selection of small (non-chain) shops selling a wide range of items. Inside there are a greengrocer, a baker, a butcher and cheesemonger, a fishmonger, an ironmonger, a haberdasher and a cobbler. There are also shops selling craft items, soft furnishings, toys, second hand books and CD/DVDs. There are also a range of takeaway/sit-in food outlets including a cafe, and a pizza counter.
Enjoyable market to visit - excellent variety. Always surprising what you can discover there...
Great marketplace with a large range of different trades for reasonable prices
VERY GOOD WILL GO BACK
Good venue for good value merchandise
