Reviews of Greensmiths Grocery & Cafe
H. B.
Okay, but certainly not great.
Lovely shop on the inside and very friendly staff - the thing that let them down is the quality and prices. I went for the spinach and feta roll which by its self is £3.50 (i feel like £2.50 would be more acceptable, as the it was nice but nothing special, just a lot of spinach and barely any feta so no flavour really) .
I figured this might be included in some sort of lunch deal with salad but apparently not - its £5 extra for salad! The greek salad also didn't look very exciting at all for that money? Just a lot of cucumber and tomatoes, no feta and barely any olives to be seen - not worth the money.
In most places you can get a drink, main and snack for a £5 lunch deal, or even £3.50 in some places, so overall pretty disappointing,.
Advice to management - reevaluate your prices and consider the quality you are offering, Offer more appealing prices and deals and your customers will come running - trust me!

One of my favourite places to get lunch on lower marsh! The quiches are really good, and the vegan "SOS roll" is great - it's like a vegan sausage roll, it's really big and only costs £1.80. There is a shop downstairs and a café upstairs, so definitely explore it!
Edit (Feb 2022) - the SOS roll isn't around anymore, but the quiches and focaccia sandwiches are great. The tiramisu remains beautiful.

Cute deli + café, good value, focaccia sandwiches ☕️🥯 although no iced coffee, focaccia sandwich was dry, no mayo or butter on the focaccia or ice in the building, for cold drinks. The deli is excellent tho, great range incl Swiss stuff which is hard to find. Café 3*, Deli 5*
M.
Nice cafe & deli, especially on a sunny day.

Brilliant place to have coffee, relax or do some work at the tables located on the antresola. You can also buy some great groceries.
P. M.
The shop had a good selection of produce but I came to pick up a To Good To Go Bag. It was not a great selection of items to Pick Up .
T.
Great quality food and large selection of stuff but staff and establishment as a whole is pretty pretentious. To be expected, I suppose
T. F.
This shop is perfect: the selection of products is large and of high quality. Prices of vegetables and fruits are very reasonable, why go to the supermarket when you can get excellent in season items at the same price from greensmiths? The staff is very kind and helpful. They also have a nice selection of beers which i am looking forward to choose from.

I'm a big fan of Greensmiths and have been coming as an occasional customer for years. For a premium grocer, it's actually very good value - I am finding myself cycling there more and more often. I go particularly for the cheese, beer and wine (for my very balanced diet). The beer section is excellent and as cheap as you'll find The Kernel anywhere. A very good mix of craft and European beers. Oh, and the tarts. The almond tart is spectacular and, again, really well priced. I don't miss the Ginger Pig being there - there is now a small, decent meat selection, and more space for veg.

The woman staff was so kind

We regularly buy meat here, the gentleman at the meat counter is always very efficient and professional. Steaks are really good.
Self service using paper bags provided above the vegetables and fruits and weight them. Always fresh and top qulity. I love cooking and using the best vegetables gives my meals superb flavours.
Lovely shop you can find a bit of everything, coffee amd cakes are also served here.

Whilst the produce is of exquisite quality and the butcher and junior members of the team are incredibly friendly and helpful they are hugely let down by two of the older members of staff. Living locally, and as an avid supporter of local businesses I almost resent bringing my custom to Greensmiths.
They are unnecessarily rude and this tends to be in the form of snide or sarcastic comments. To expose a few minor incidents:
Upon recently entering the store 10 minutes until the scheduled closing time the older grumpy man remarked “You’re cutting it fine” under his breath which made me feel uncomfortable and my custom unwanted.
I was also horrified after recently visiting the store with a friend who ordered a baked tart, to which the older woman angrily retorted “Well I cant see what you mean, just choose off the menu!”.
This is absolutely not the way to treat valued customers who often spend money here.
This is perhaps the first time I have gone out of my way to leave a review online however, I do not have time for mean or rude people, especially coming out of a hard year for everyone, where a degree of humility should be shown.

I'm so happy to have this grocer in my neighbourhood. Great selection of bread, cheese, fruit and veg, and the ability to buy the exact amount of produce that you want instead of having to settle for pre-packaged portions at a chain supermarket. The staff is great and I've built a nice rapport with them.
J. J.
Fantastic selection and good prices. I'm always surprised by the specialty items I find in the small space. The wine and beer selection is terrific. Produce is great.
D. K.
I regularly visit when I'm in London and enjoy their produce and the fab cafe and cakes. The quality of everything they sell is excellent and I enjoy their takeaway salads and quiches especially. Their meat counter is very high quality too and they are open late. Would highly recommend : )
J. T.
What a great shop! Superb selection of produce including seasonal vegetables including a range of winter squash. Great selection of quality wine, dried fruit and cheeses.
M. “. T.
Gorgeous independent supermarket with a layout and design aesthetic you wouldn't expect. Much larger than it seems from the outside and packed with all you could need. The butchers and deli are well stocked and extremely competent, and if you don't feel like cooking for yourself, there's a cafe inside serving breakfast and lunchtime favourites.
M. P.
Very nice gourmet foodstore. The variety is remarkable and the quality of the food too. However, I have a couple of suggestions:
1 - it would be great to know the origin of food. For example: Gorgonzola Dolce, or Comte cheese, which suppliers do you buy from? If so, communicate it to the customer somehow. The label does not show any information, but I think this would be great value customers.
2 - opening hours. 8-30am, 4.30pm are not aligned to the working hours of the foodstores in the area. And they don't make much sense for a foodstore in general. Normally I shop before 8am or after 6pm. I would just shop much more if the opening hours weren't so rigid.
D. R.
The decent soups are a value-for-money lunch option and they stock a good selection of quiches, salads and wholefood groceries too (and there's also a Ginger Pig organic meat counter). However, out of a large variety of fresh bread products not one of them was gluten-free! When I enquired about it the staff person simply shrugged, which was sad to see. I expected a better response.
S.
Curiously old fashioned general store with a modern twist. Groser, butcher, Baker, wine merchant and more, closed after 4.30 and on a Sunday. Very good produce locally situated. It's been great at this time of lockdown to have this nearby and I'm keen to give them my business.
M. T.
The kind of grocery store that you can’t visit without a very strict list of what you need, or else you’ll end up leaving with the whole store in tow. Especially the fresh sausage rolls, delicious cakes, and the salads which change regularly.
R. J.
Best place for organic and natural products . A variety of products to choose from. Great staff. Good warm food as well. I buy all my veggies and other stuff from there .
s.
The only neighbourhood grocer+butcher+cafe you'll ever need! Perfect if you'll looking to buy some fresh organic meat/vegetables. Lovely cafe neatly tucked on the upper floor, serving absolutely yummy baked goods (and more).

I have stumbled upon this amazing groceries/cafè while hanging around Lower Marsh. If you want to be inspired and delighted by a fine selection cuts of meats, fresh veggies and local produce, please give it a go. I had brunch here in a couple of occasion and it is really worth a visit: the dishes are simple and tasty, the staff are professional, the asmosphere is relaxed. I found particularly enjoyable the dining room: it is really cozy, with two large windows from which you can see the sky on a sunny day.
A. M.
We shop here mainly due to the fact that the quality of food is generally very high and the fact that the shop allows you not to buy fruit and veg in plastic, as we are trying to go plastic free this is very important to us. I have noticed that the bread is no longer in plastic, another small battle won.
There is a good selection of fruit and veg (apart from the non-Fairtrade bananas), meat, dairy, etc. The beer is also refreshingly different from what you can buy in most shops. The fudge and the chocolate (the majority of it Fairtrade) are great.
Ideally, more of the products would be plastic free or made of compostable materials.
A. K.
Just went there for a quick veg & fruits shopping, I wanted to try this store since I usually go to Whole Foods for organic vegetables. I was very pleased, the selection of vegetables and fruits was large enough for what I needed, but most of all it was way cheaper than the price at Whole Foods, Planet Organic and all these "hype" organic places. Staff was very helpful and friendly. I am definitely going back!
J. M.
A sort of collection of little organic shops in feel-- like if Wholefoods wasn't quite so IndustrialOrganic. Independent, stocks pretty much everything you need, good range of prices and good quality grub. Also worth going to the little cafe-- their food is great, especially the actual meals, and the by-the-glass wine is good, too.
R. R.
Excellent greengrocer with an artisan butcher counter. They do very good fruit and vegs, they also got a great selection of bread, cakes and pantry items. Café has reopen but is a bit expensive, a real shame as they are doing lovely food.
M. M.
A very good grocery store. There are a few floors in this store, and it opens up at the back, so don't be fooled by the first impression when you enter the store.
There is a deli, a bakery, a butcher, greengrocer as well as ambient and speciality items. I found there to be vegan friendly produced located in the basement, with reasonably priced Tempeh. There is also a very good selection of herbs and spices at a good price given the location.
P. K.
More expensive than supermarkets, but you are getting "proper" organic produce here. The store includes a coffee shop, butcher, veg shop, as well as tinned/bottled items. They say we should eat less meat, but better quality: this is the place to get it.

It was a bleak early afternoon, rain clouds loomed angrily over me, prompting the urge for a pastry. Thus I decided to spend my hard earned student loan at Greggs where *consistently* meagre meals are provided. On that particular day, the queue at Greggs was unusually long, but this was coupled with even longer service times. My patience was dwindling, and I'd spent enough time in that queue to realise it wasn't even a good idea going to a fast food chain (usually I wouldn't have had that long to reflect on my urges)!
Out I stepped, glad to have avoided that impulse... yet it lingered on, stubborn to be satisfied. Across the road, I spotted a lovely green corner building, meats hanging from the ceiling, the classic butcher costume donned by some friendly looking gentlemen. I entered the established, aptly named Greensmiths, and ambled to the back section, where a tucked away cafe area greeted me. Despite walking past this place many a time, I had not realised its vastness!
Treading past some hearty looking, fresh produce, I ended up in front of a pastry section, which, my oh my, was far better looking than the one in Greensmith's more popular, but tacky cousin across the road. I selected a vegetarian spicy pastry and picked up a homemade tiramisu to accompany it.
Thinking about the meal that followed is stimulating my salivary glands at this very moment. For the sake of my wallet and diet, I will end this post here. You just have to try it for yourself...
I have been back many a time since that first afternoon, and I can confirm that whilst there is consistency in their food options, it's certainly not meagre!
A. C.
Cute little supermarket with a cozy cafe upstairs, the food was made using ingredients found in store, so it was super fresh! The chicken liver pate and pork cheek pate was delicious :) would love to try other items next time we visit London!
S. S.
Truly one of the jewels of Lower Marsh. The complete independent greengrocer, with very high quality produce, cheeses and meats. Naturally by buying independent you must expect to pay a little more, but sometimes walking in here feels a bit like stepping back in time to days of old.
Also, a beautiful, relaxing, skylight-lit cafe is hidden away at the back, and would be a hipsters dream, if only they knew it was here! Sadly Greensmiths is closed on Sundays, so no opportunity for the Sunday coffee-lovers.
I'm as guilty as the next person of shopping at supermarkets maybe too much, but you can do your bit by just by popping in here once a month and telling your friends.
E. B.
I simply love everything about Greensmiths and frequent the store many times a week. If you are looking for high quality foods, service or just a breakfast or a juice this is the place for you. It´s a place I look forward to going to and brings joy to my life. I know the above may sound to good to be true, but it is really that good and in many ways it has set the standard for what I will be looking for in my next move.
Thanks Greensmiths for being such an excellent place to drop by!
M. K.
I like this place so much!! Living in central London it gives me a feeling like I am actually living in small village, and all the local farmers from that village would be selling their produce in this shop. Everything is fresh, trustworthy and people are friendly.
C. v. H.
Favourite place to buy food in the area. Fruit, veg, bakery, small butchery section, cheese, snacks, good coffee, wine and beer, baking supplies, spices, frozen food, homemade lunches etc.
A. P.
Ate in the cafe and found it very tasty and affordable. £4.50 to choose from a range of sausage rolls and 2 salads from a selection. Would definitely recommend!
A. L.
Had a traditional pork sausage roll, they were out of the pork, sage and black pepper. It was lacking a bit in flavour and pastry wasn't great. For £2.50 not bad
a. S.
its the best supermarket i think i have ever been too. amazing butchers, a brilliant selection of fresh veg and pretty much everything you could want. only wish it was open on sundays!!!!
love it.
M. S.
Surprisingly competative prices for some items, same as you would pay in a large supermarket chain. Great selection of healthy and organic products and very helpful staff.
J. T.
Very good value coffee (and good coffee too!) in pedestrianised area. But unfortunately today marred by pneumatic drill noise from roadworks across the road.
C. W.
Greensmith makes the Lower Marsh even more of a cosy and neat neighbourhood than it already is. When friends from abroad visit me, Greensmith is definitely on the London-to do list! I love their breakfast variety that is served in the café and the sausage rolls are a must have, too. The staff is really friendly and their fresh vegetables & fruits, bakery goods and cheese & wine selection are excellent. If I remember correctly they even deliver. But shopping and lingering in the authentic local store is simply part of the experience :)
R. R.
Yes it's not cheap. But where else are you going to get meat this good? The butcher always has good tips for you. This is my place of choice for a high quality meal.
T.
Excellent selection of fresh produce and quality food items. It's like a dose of countryside quality local produce but in the city!
C. P.
It is expensive, but they do really lovely things. I have been buying cheeses during lockdown to cheer myself up and it's made life much better.
L. G.
Fantastic greengrocer, quality butcher, tasty freshly-made takeaway options and the wine cellar has a great selection too. Absolute gem.
U. K.
