Reviews of Jay's Budgens
S. R.
Jays is great and always a lovely welcome! Excellent convenience store and you'll be hard pushed not to find what you want and with lots of extra goodies to tempt you! Fresh Yuzu counter too for all your sushi needs. Enjoy!
L.
Nice store offering a good range of grocery items. Well organised, clean, tidy and easy to navigate. Staff were efficient and friendly and I would happily return if in the area again.
T. R.
A local legend. If you're looking for a rare ingredient, it will be here! Lovely energy and delicious homemade samosas every weekend.
H. C.
Nice supermarket, friendly staff. You can also connect and take parcels here but only Hermes I believe.
M. W.
Friendly and helpful staff. You are able to find most basic foods or an alternative.
N. H.
Really good local shop. Good selection of vegan and plant based products too.
E. M.
I simply love this shop. It is definitely more expensive but reflects the brands, quality and selection. They have lot of healthy food, vegan options, fresh produce and fabulous products.
F. K.
Local supermarket with a great selection of produce, excellent fresh vegetables, good range of vegan and vegetarian meat derivatives. Their cheese selection is fantastic, they are selling freshly baked bread, it's definitely a better selection than most big brand supermarkets. They also have a good micro brewery craft beers on offer.
They're not exactly cheap, but it's great for small errands or if you want to treat yourself.
R. M.
Love Jays - great selection of vegan and gluten free options and you have got to try their veggie curries when they are available.
R. D.
Wonderful experience when I walked inside Budgens. They sell everything 😉
D. L.
What a great convenience store! This is an independent business giving the big supermarket brands a run for its money. Well stocked (even in lockdown) great range of food and drink and everyday essentials. Great quality and range of fine wines! Friendly and helpful staff.
C. G.
Great beers, vegan snacks, and lots of veg to rescue your dinner plans.
S. R.
Jay is a local legend he takes time to say hello and remembers your name as do all the staff, Patrick his son is a really nice guy and the shop is one of the nicest places to go. A great selection of products and if its not there they will source it for you
J. L.
Excellent local supermarket. Can’t walk past Jay’s Budgens without stopping in for some truffle crisps or Haribo giant strawberries. Excellent selection of beer and wine too, and homemade samosas on a weekend.
n. w.
An amazing convenience store that is leading the way in this area for higher end and obscure produce in normal shops.
Yes, of course, if you can afford to the in Jones of Brockley that's great, but realistically a shop like Jay's is a much better compromise. Good craft beer, fancy snacks, pour-you-own cereals and dried fruits and stuff. They did an excellent refit a couple of years ago now and the place has a lot more space and is better organised.
Great shops, great produce, great staff. Hard recommend and a rare five stars from me
R. D.
Well sorted, tidy and clean supermarket. Around crofton park area one of the few places that I can find out my peanut butter, barista oat milk and from time to time an very competitive price for the Ben&Jerry's. And now has some home delivery.
B. J.
Best range of good food locally. Excellent vegan selection. Fresh fruit and veg variable but everything else great. Has large range of products with no packaging which you can refill and bring your own containers. Really great shop, just needs a more consistent quality of fresh stuff and I'd shop there for everything.
A. D.
Good range of products and staff are friendly and helpful
M. G.
This shop has been around for years as have the owners and it is one of the nicest budgens I've been in.
It is what it is, its a regular small supermarket with some free parking outside if you can get a space.
Plenty of products in store if you prefer the smaller shop rather than a big supermarket
P. S.
I love this shop, the staff are really friendly and helpful and the community benefits from the caring spirit of the management. They are always doing things to support the community and are currently providing meals for children during half term.
A. C.
BIG SHOUT OUT to the family running this store. They’ve been working around the clock to be able to supply us all with food during this difficult time. They have been more efficient in restocking than any big chain. And they are always very welcoming, friendly and helpful. The community of Crofton Park is lucky to have them!
J. B.
It's a great little shop with all sorts on offer that you would usually only expect to find in health shops etc. There is a huge range of vegan foods and specialty sauces etc. I think I remember it having a plastic free nuts and cereal dispenser too. He's a really friendly owner with nice staff, too.
N. T.
I'm a neighbor of the neighborhood, and I buy whenever I can here, you have so many things and all kinds of variety. In general, the staff is nice until one day, my roommate went for a while to buy me a bath gel among other things because I just had surgery.
When he returned home at the moment I could see that the shower gel was not the right one (it was a transparent container) he immediately went to change it after 5 minutes, basically because my house is on the corner of the street. He went with the receipt and took another to change it, the older man with glasses told him that he did not accept it that he had used it, how is it possible in 5 minutes?
It was seen that the bottle was full, there was only that bath gel left and it could not be compared with another for that man to see. He was so rude with my friend. He bought the new one because I needed it.
I’m still buy there I’ll buy there anyway but my friend he never come back.
A. M.
This is a really lovely high street supermarket. Although it is a little more expensive than the very large supermarkets, this is certainly made up for by the convenience of the location. It really is a pleasant place to shop, they have a great selection of produce that you don't find easily elsewhere and it has a quality feel about the place. Everything is lit and presented extremely well and the staff are amazingly friendly. This is by far my favourite shop in the area; highly recommended.
T. A.
This is a local institution, not just a shop in Crofton Park! It _is_ a Budgens, but much more than that, it is Jay's and that means carefully considered stock that suits local residents, very friendly greetings for all customers, and banging veggie samosas. Strong recommendation!
W. R.
Awesome samosas by Jay and very friendly service.
C. D.
Surprised at the excellent vegan range here and the wide range of dispensers of dried fruit and nuts. Great to find somewhere it's possible to buy with really minimal plastic waste. They also have Cooper's sourdough which is top notch!
V. P.
Lovely friendly staff who are so helpful. Go there after work most days!!
M. C.
Jay's has recently been refurbished, the staff are always welcoming! They have a good selection of vegan and vegetarian foods! I go here specially to buy semolina as nowhere else sells it! Prices are reasonable, if you're buying rude health brands it's always a bit pricey wherever you shop! A great local shop!
W. c.
Great shop. Lots of new things to discover. They sell most things you can expect to find in a co-op plus lots of other vegan friendly treats, nice fruit and veg, etc..... a bit more expensive than most shops but you get what you pay for. One thing I would say though is the pick and mix nuts are very expensive!!
j. M.
This store is well stocked with everything you could need. Plenty of vegeterian food wide range of spices. Lovely bakery bread and plenty of bargains. Staff are very friendly a family run business. Always very helpful. Its the best shop around this area. I love shopping there.
N. O.
Jay's is the best shop. He has quorn lasagna a product that has been out of stock on ocado for months. There are so many products he stocks that ocado keep running out of that I literally cant be bothered to mention them all. He does a great variety of chocolate and icecream including that weird toffee crumble stick icecream from the 1970s. He has a decent wine and beer selection and very good croissants. He also does handmade samosas sometimes. He supports a number of local charities. And Jay and his family and staff are all sound people. Shop at Jay's!
P. A.
Jay's is such a gem of a convenience shop. Has everything you need and everything you didn't know you needed. The hot food on Saturday mornings is not to be missed
c.
The folks are lovely here, they can find anything you are looking for. Try the fancy meals for two - streets above your average oven meal. Thanks Jay
C.
Fantastically presented interior. Really friendly staff. Family owned and family run. Also has a collection point for some online clothing stores. I would of given it five stars if the items in store were not so over priced!
A. W.
Oh this store became quickly one of my favorite shops. I found it conveniently on my way to work, but the welcome, warm vibe of the shop's owner (family business) keeps me returning. I often shop there, for my work lunches or for home - good offer in the shop, I am very satisfied customer there each time.
M. C.
Good variety of stuff but close to double what it costs at a supermarket. Fruit and veg VERY expensive and usually quite low in quality.
J. D.
Jay`s Budgens are one of our favourite shop runs with friendly family. It was only shop near be Crofton park who even due Covid 19 was able to keep`s his stock high.
Thank you!
S. O.
Absolutely love this place. It's small, but you could pretty much get everything you need. Fantastic vegan range. I hope these guys never go!
S.
The finest Budgens around. Lots of produce you'd normally expect at Waitrose or Wholefoods, alongside produce you'd get at asian and continental shops, alongside traditional and popular staples. All served with a smile and compassion for the community. The best convenience shop for miles.
Z. D.
Love this shop. Really nice selection of food and the staff have always been pleasant to deal with.
R. B.
Great store with huge variety you might not expect from your regular Budgens. Only minor criticism is that Jay only does his homemade samosas on a Saturday.
J. P.
This is my favourite local, the owner Mr Patel is the most friendly shop owner you coukd ever meet, funny (cheeky even); all the staff / family are, as I believe it is a family run business. They have great offers on at sell by date food for all the bargain hunters out there like me.
N. M.
This may be a little unbelievable to some but this is literally one of the best shops in the world. Not one of the best supermarkets or food shops I mean; just one of the best shops period. As it says on the front of the shop, opened in 1980 as a corner shop and now run by the original owner's sons, it has clearly grown with the area. The stock list is just insane, like a few examples: sourdough (cheaper than posh delis), fresh meringues (I mean like, raspberry and lemon and that), a whole fridge section for vegans with like 8 different vegenaise varieties, half an aisle dedicated to nuts in these amazing huge dispensers, an extensive freezer section, craft beers cans which are fully less than 50% of the price as in the posh offies nearby, a grocer-quality fresh fruit and veg section... There's more than I can describe here tbh; best to just go. There's almost no context I can think of that wouldn't be appropriate as it had healthy stuff, treat stuff, fresh stuff, breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert and booze. Oh, and all with a smile, too. Hats off to you Jay & Bro/Sons!
K. P.
Mr Patel has grown his business into what it is today... a warm, welcoming place for all the locals in Brockley & Crofton Park to get their everyday essentials. Lovely shop, plenty of choice with a very friendly & helpful team too.
O. M.
C'mon down, best, most friendly store in SE London! Really great veg/vegan supplies too!!
P. W.
Always friendly and helpful.
Focusing on us as people rather than customers, considerate of our welfare.
D. 7.
Good local shop with huge variety of fresh and grocery foods. Pay a bit more for the convenience.
S. D.
Very happy to have found a store that sells some bulk grains in Lewisham. It would be nice to see the selection of bulk goods grow in the future. Also not all vegetables are available loose yet which is a shame.
S. B.
Best local grocery shop bar none. Super friendly and accommodating owner (happy for me to leave my bike in the store briefly), stocks everything you need and an excellent beer selection too. 💯%
L. F. (.
This is a great local store. Very helpful and friendly family store with a wide range of goods. Hot bread time is a must.
G. L.
Great family run store with plenty of options not available in local supermarkets, especially good section for vegetarians and vegans.
M. M.
I like Budgens, very friendly staff, can be bit more expensive then your local co op but you get so much more variety on offer more care has gone into to having bespoke products found in health food markets etc, everything looks fresher then your local souless supermarkets. It also sets itself out to be part of the community. The world needs more Jays Budgens
K. W.
They have loads of ethical produce here and great for vegans and other diet needs including specific allergen ftee bread, nut milk etc. Not cheap, but still good value.
M. C.
Super calming shop somehow. Wooden floors contribute to that as well as lots of vegan food. Yep types of gnocchi = good times.
T. A.
The Owner is really lovely/welcoming. Variety of food. Bought ginger biscuits made in Germany for the first time. was yummy. normally has sale on alcohol.
D. L.
Nice owner good selection of food 👍🏻
R. F.
Very special j been there a long time.
Aways use j's everything you need.
S. T.
By far the best supermarket in the area. Far better than Sainsbury's Local or Tesco Express which are dull and uninspiring and have very little on offer. But the selection at Jay's Budgens is amazing. I think it's a bit more expensive than other local shops and supermarkets, but I don't mind. The people who work there are also really nice. The only reason it gets a 4 rather than a 5 is because of the higher prices. But I guess a shop this good that's not a Sainsbury's, Tesco or Co-Op has to make higher margins so that it can compete and get a USP, so I don't mind really.
M. L.
Friendly proprietor and staff, great range, high quality and reasonable prices. Perfect.
K. o. f.
Good local shop staff very friendly and helpful
has western union money sending facility
J. R.
Great selection and friendly family staff. A little too expensive to shop regularly though I'm afraid.
V. P.

K. K.
Fantastic shopping staff could not be more helpful always got what you want...or quickly get it
V. H.
Mid-sized Budgens with a relatively good selection. Absolutely love the local bakery's fresh bread and fresh pressed natural apple juices available.
R. B.
