Fabulous place love it
there are great restaurants and bars here Charthouse Museum and fabulous church Hidden in the back streets

Always a great place to go especially at Christmas time! All the stalls are stocked and the guys serving are happy to help. The whole environment is pleasant. The car parking is free and the cafes are open. We always go between 3am and 4am and get all the meat we want for at least half the following year. Spend around £300:00 and you'll have meat for ages and ages. Well worth the visit!!
N. N. O.
Very interesting area with loads of great pubs and restaurants. Worth a walk through the market. What a wonderful place London is.
N. F.
The market area for non trade people is quite small and a lot of traders do not except card, cash only. Saying that the choice is good and better value than supermarkets. You need to get up early to make the most. Very busy area with restaurants collecting meat, vans everywhere. They have a large underground car park which is reasonably priced.

This wholesale meat market has everything you would need from poultry, lamb, pork, beef to sausages. There are many different types of cuts that I couldn’t find at other butchers. Not to mention that prices here much lower than others places. Make sure to be here early, around 7am as the market is closed at 8am. Many shops start closing around 7:30 or so.
j. c.
easy, cheap parking. cheap products what more can you ask for?? ah yes that's it No ulez charge! that would improve my experience. putting £12 on your food bill is criminal.

Smithfield's meat market dates from the 10th century and is now London's only remaining wholesale market in continuous operation since medieval times. The current market building is Grade II listed, designed by Victorian architect Sir Horace Jones in the second half of the 19th century.
Meat sales cease early each morning but the building itself is definitely worth a visit. It’s a working market and so not pristine, but it’s history and character shine through at any time of day.
M. S.
Great cuts and much cheaper than local butchers in North West London at least. Best times to go are between 1.30-3am. Abbidjoe Meats staff are great, helpful and very friendly.
A. R.
Can't Go wrong if after Quality and Value! Honestly the effort to be there at 2 a.m, it is totally worth it to make it back home and grill a nice fresh steak!
A. S.

J. G.
Excellent for meat lovers. U can buy everything from eggs to delicious T-bone ! Couldn't believe the prices. I really recommend
D. S.
Not a good week to be up there it's absolutely mad but the selection of meat is the best x
T. R.
It’s best to get here between 2AM and 3AM before it gets busy. This was a great experience with lots of different places to purchase a variety different meats at competitive prices so it’s good to walk around and check out the different shops. Highly enjoyable experience highly recommended.

Not a place for vegetarian, but the atmosphere of the old victorian market halls are amazing and you get a very good quality of meat and coldmeat, worth a visit to get an impression of an wholesale place, but for that you have to get up in the middle of the night 😴
d. c.
Too early opening for me to be there, but always interesting…
O. I.
19th century victorian architecture. One of the oldest market in london.
D.
Great place to stock up on meats and other little sweet things 😊 go early no congestion charge applies 👍 😉
D. D. (. H. C.
I love going there early in the morning when it's still dark and picking up the best quality meat in London at the best prices.
D. R. R.
Cut the middle guy out and go straight to the supplier. Really good quality meat for a fraction of the normal prices. However, in the last year or so some of the prices have rocketed. Still good value regardless.
M. B.
Good service unbeatable price for the meat
G. B.
Meat house, (chicken ,beef, lamb, pork )fresh at all the time.
S. B.
Have to come here twice a month for the hubby. He says they have best pork and apple sausages around. Bangers and mash for sunday. Great value anyway
K. S.
A really amazing market to visit, if you are in London you should visit.
J. F. 2.
Truly Marvellous. A Victorian Superstructure in the middle of a rather special piece of ground. Avoid trader hours if meat and large vehicles not your thing. Find St Bartholomew the Great and Charterhouse and Beppe's cafe
N. B.
What an amazing building. This building is almost like a piece of artwork!
A. H.
Who doesn't like a bit of BBQ shopping at 4am
E. N.
Night time market, in well placed area. There's a cheap underground parking on other side of the road for about £1.50 an hour.
Not too busy place, we come here every 2 to 3 months. Meat is reasonably priced and good quality.
K. M.
Lived in London over 10 years, always said I would go "one day" finally went and was not disappointed.. quality meat cuts, absolutely great value for money, every vendor so helpful, location is so easy to get to, great public transport links.. Will definitely be going back... 👍
S. Y.
A meat market. Expect to buy in bulk only. Mostly dealing in cash.
R. B.
Love it, I'm like a kid in a sweet shop.
All top quality meat two thirds of the price. You won't get better quality.
Bloody closed over easter
T. K.
All the best but queues are loooong as on airport, 1,5h I was waiting to get in . The roads are close to get there so better leave the car out of the market , and just walk in . If you like to go there make sure to be there before opining otherwise get some food with you .. it’s all about COVIDiot .
P. M.
Best place to buy meat. Best to not go there a week before Christmas or Easter. Too busy.
H. d. (.
Busy Busy Busy
Decent Prices
W. “. P.
Quiet but very interesting. The octopus was outstanding, however.
j. C.
This is the 2nd time I am going there. Those guys are friendly but doing business. I will definitely go back again for the prices and the great experience
R. B.
Best place by far to buy your meat. Always worth the visit and also get to see how London works when you are usually snuggled up with snugglepoops.
Get out and visit.
G. c.
As a person who has been in the premises on a visit in the past all I can say is that I have been blown away by the experience,
Staff were very excellent
Services in the area were spot on.
And i can say that for a northern lad to be welcomed in to a southern environment it is a good place to revisit on any occasion.
j. b.
Mostly still a functioning wholesale meat market with elaborate painted Victorian cast-iron work.
The immediate neighbourhood is rich in historic associations (mostly of an appropriately bloody nature), renowned for a swagger of bar/eatery options, lively and atmospheric.
It can really cook here when an offal lot of carnivores congregate.
P. T.
Buy your meat where your butcher buys
Pay wholesale prices
T. a. L.
Fresh meat for good price? This is your place. Just walk around and soak up the unique atmosphere of this place early in the morning, see how busy the meat traders are. You can have coffee and breakfast around the market, and if you take your time to talk to people here, you can hear amazing stories from "the old days of the market"
C. C.
Variety of meats, great selection. Price were good, reasonable. I recommend this place if you want a high quality meats
D. A.
Prices are quite good to be honest. Staff isn't very social but they work fast for being 2:30 am. I think it was good overall.
b. b.
We've just made our yearly pilgrimage to Smithfield Meat Market early this year for obvious reasons.
Expect to queue from now on ( thanks to covid19!!) as they are only letting in 50 people at a time. On the plus side, it's not the same game of sardines inside the halls.
R. B. -. E. k.
Can understand people wanting to get there in the early hours of the morning for meat.
Personally I love the buildings which were designed by Sir Horace Jones in the Victorian era and are now Grade II listed buildings.
They fell in to a bad state of disrepair during the 1960's and onwards and have been going through a rejuvenation scheme, quite rightfully so.
An area with so much history, lovely to walk around.
C. C.
For Londoners and tourists looking to do something different, visiting this market is a must (assuming you're not vegetarian!). The market starts whilst most are still asleep, but once inside you'll likely forget that it's actually 2am as it's a very busy place. Definitely go as close to opening time as possible if you plan to make purchases, as the best goods will sell out before the market closes.
C. R.
Very good place to buy some serious meatt for a great price and can find meet from around the world.
But look property where you buy it from as they may give you spoil meat underneath double check your meat and the butcher as i didn't check the meat i bought was spoil and is no way i can't returned it as the time i get home and go back they will be close so check
Yes is a great palce good prices but have to look and check that's why i will give 3 stats
M. D.
The only surviving wholesale food market within central London, this is a meat-eater's paradise. Of course, you have to be up early, and there is regularly discussion of closing it to house a museum, or a shopping mall, or more luxury flats but this is well worth a visit. The architecture is stunning.
Of particular note is the Christmas meat auction on Christmas Eve. Real bargains to be found, and the meat is excellent quality. To be done at least once for the atmosphere, before it's gone forever as a market.
C. C.
Excellent visit.
You must go if you want the freshest and thickest steaks.

The only things you want to know are...
1) the CONgestion charge starts at 7am through to 630pm, with emphasis on the CON!!, the mayors stealth tax! So I'd aim to be leaving the area CONgestion charge zone by 650am at the latest !
2) parking is free up to 630am except on the red route! Plenty of parking spaces around the market but it is usually busy there at about midnight until 7am, with white vans all trying to get in a spot so they can deliver or pick-up! If youre a customer, I'd recommend that you park in some of the side roads leading to the market as the ring road around the actual market will be chockablock with the white vans in the early hours.and not all of the drivers are looking out for the safety of the public or even understand the language of the road signs (I'm not slating foreign drivers but you can see my point !) And with the amount of forklifts moving around there as there are plenty of pallets that need moving, If you'd like to see yourself as a good common sense type of person, I'm sure you'll be able to avoid getting run over by a forklift driver who is delivering heavy pallets of fresh meat! So look both ways when crossing the road!! Even if they're one way! Especially in the roads around the market.
3) straight onto the rant about the old boring one ( mayor of London- sadiq khan) who is out to get whatever he can from the taxpayers so he put a parking wardens role on a quota for issued tickets , so I'd recommend that you don't sit around in your car after 7am as I'm sure you'll find it seems to be another scamming method to rob you of your hard earned money by issuing a parking ticket or by you missing the congestion charge times! And heaven knows how much of a jobsworth he's going to be , with the new ultra low carbon emissions charge of £100 per day for Smokey motors, the mayor of seems to think that you are actually doing quite good for money from the fact you can own a vehicle!
4) I hope you find this helpful! If it is somewhat rambling!! I'm really quite tired of all the work I put into this low paid driving job and then I'll be on my way back home , when you're a delivery driver who is delivering to Smithfield market and then driving all the way around London then back to Bourne after all the deliveries have been made! It's either driving or trying to sleep before the next days delivery round! And I go round and round and I won't be writing anymore on it yet but it's all about the money and I'm tired of it all! So no more Mr nice guy, I'm not going to be a mug by working with the minimum wage paying boss I used to work for, sorry if you didn't realise I'm having a rant at the government for robbing us blind with taxes and fines and stuff and I'm sure you'll be fine after all the work you put into reading this !! I hope you find this helpful to see yourself going for a trip to the "butchers shop" to the butchers shops to buy some quality meaty bits and bobs! And getting them at a decent price! I'm sure you'll find something to get the big fan of meat in your family , something to get excited about!! Pheasants and partridge are looking at the end of the season but now it'll be pigeons that sell! And i hate collecting pigeons from the shoots, I like guns but I wouldn't want to kill anything!! Besides pigeons smell!
D. N.
I don't like the prices, but the choice and quality of the products is better
E. N.
Always busy but extremely worthwhile!
m. h.
There are constructions work going on in the market, expect a bit of traffic, but my shopping experience is always fine.
N. A.
Great selection of meats. Chicken is especially cheap compared to supermarket prices. Great for getting food for your bbq
J. A.
It's a nice place to buy meats🍖always buy meats here. I will recommend 👌 👍 ☺
b.
Fabulous with dedicated people that keep the place running smoothly
R. G.
If you need meat and you want good prices and good quality, you won’t beat this place.
R. S.
Waking at 1.00am is so worth the trip up to the market . Meat in all its glory you ask for it and there it is . Will be back next month to top up.Best butcher for pork check out Mickelson.
S. S. J.
Really like this market - go explore the food, art or the homemade clothes. Would have loved to buy more than I did - so many nice things there! Lots of small coffee and lunch places around the area. Worth a visit!
T. H.
The best quality meat, great value for bulk buying.
T. J.
Butcher market of London. Market takes place 2am to 10am everyday. You can smell meat in the day time also. Interesting history associated with this place. Would be good to go with a guided tour to know about it.
A. K.
Smithfield fruit and vegitable market is very attractive to watch. The day i visited it was quite because it was found closed. Much more interesting to watch the market during business hours.
L. H.
I only visited for a short time but this is an interesting place. Have a look around and explore the surrounding area for landmarks. Some great history and stories related to the area. Will visit again to spend some more time here.
G. T.
Very nice market!
E. B.
I buy meat here regularly, apart from the good quality of the meat, the vast selection and the cheap prices I also like the vibe of this market. It has lots of old cockney blokes chopping up meat through the night, probably some of them has worked the night shift for 30 years straight.
M. M.
Who knows this place, knows how good it is. Everything fresh and good. Only for early birds. Vegans and vegetarians - stay away!
G. T.
What can be said about this London institution? Borough Market gets a lot of the plaudits and rightly so. But if you're a true carnivore, you really do owe it to yourself to check out the home of meat at Smithfield's. Get there early and mingle with the sleep deprived workers at the traders which have been selling meat at this venue for decades. The quality of produce and it's freshness truly needs to be seen to be believed, but more importantly, you'll find it's so much cheaper than the likes of The Ginger Pig, you'll be smiling from ear to ear when devouring your steak at home.
E. T.
Great value, great experience and all night shopping! What's not to love about buying meat here.
K. N.
As the primary source of meat for London restaurants you can understand why taking the time to wake up at completely unreasonable hour, climbing on a night bus and making the journey into a world of meat, meat and more meat!!
You can find any cut you have ever dreamed of and the bulk prices make fillet steak affordable, the hustle and bustle of the market is extrodinary and you'll be back next month to purchase another exorbitant amount of meat.
The market is open between 2am and 7am in the morning from Monday to Thursday.
M. B.
I went to market in smithfeild. They have Goat meat the price was right, the beef was not too bad because iI dont like beef so I Hardley buy it. The pork Price was right and it was delicious when cooked it. They sell other things but you have to visit there for your self.
F. M.
Good old Smithfield! For so long a sad run down relic, and now such great news that it has been saved by a generous donor and this huge edifice will be the new home of the amazing Museum of London!
C. C.
Meat has been traded at Smithfield Market for more than 800 years, making it one of the oldest markets in London. A livestockmarket occupied the site as early as the 10th century.
In 1174 the site was described by William Fitzstephen as:
"a smooth field where every Friday there is a celebrated rendezvous of fine horses to be traded, and in another quarter are placed vendibles of the peasant, swine with their deep flanks, and cows and oxen of immense bulk."
Costs, customs and rules were meticulously laid down. For instance, for an ox, a cow or a dozen sheep one could get 1 penny. The livestock market expanded over the centuries to meet demand from the growing population of the City. In 1710, the market was surrounded by a wooden fence containing the livestock within the market. Until the market's abolition, the Gate House at Cloth Fair ("Fair Gate") employed a chain (le cheyne) on market days. Daniel Defoe referred to the livestock market in 1726 as being "without question, the greatest in the world", and data available appear to corroborate his statement.
Between 1740 and 1750 the average yearly sales at Smithfield were reported to be around 74,000 cattle and 570,000 sheep.By the middle of the 19th century, in the course of a single year 220,000 head of cattle and 1,500,000 sheep would be "violently forced into an area of five acres, in the very heart of London, through its narrowest and most crowded thoroughfares". The volume of cattle driven daily to Smithfield started to raise major concerns.
The Great North Road traditionally began at Smithfield Market and mileages were measured from here. The specific start was Hicks Hall, and its former location continued to be used for mileages even after it was demolished, soon after 1778. The road followed St John Street, and continued north, eventually leading to Edinburgh. This ended in 1829, with the establishment of the General Post Office at St Martin's-le-Grand, which became the new starting point.

Been coming here for years. Going tonight to get me Christmas meat. Great service and great prices. Value for money with quality cuts of meats.
M. H.
Fresh good quality meats, delivery with a friendly smile and service; worth the trip so early in the morning
R. T.
Smithfield Market, just around the corner from me. The pubs surrounding the market famously had a special licence to open from early in the morning, so as to provide refreshments to the porters. As a consequence, the area has been a traditional haunt for insomniac alcoholics. Yet gradually coffee shops and wine bars have replaced the pubs and, like much of working class London, Smithfield has become gentrified and quite chic. But, the alcoholics linger on.
B. M.
Great market wholesale prices if you don't mind staying up half the night
