Reviews of Grainger Market
M. L.
First time visiting Grainger market and really enjoyed it. Great to see produce from proper butchers, fishmongers and fruit and veg. Also some great street food stores including a fab Chinese Dumpling place and Geordie Bangers to mention just two. Definitely worth a visit.
J. T.
Somewhat underwhelming.
We arrived once it had opened and thought it was quiet because it was early. Came back and it wasn't any different. A few good finds but nothing to write home about. It's also closed on Sundays
M. M.
Great market, the variety of stalls provide for just about everything; fresh produce, clothing, accessories etc. Also many places to eat/drink and hairdressers/barber. Nice place to come and browse, then sit and get some food whilst watching the world go bye. Still quite a few stalls closed, but hopefully all will open in future. It's nice to see this place busy.
R. S.
I always enjoy the atmosphere of this place. Lots of small, interesting businesses all under one roof. You could easily spend a few hours walking around it. I'd give it 5 stars, but it does look a lit run down in places. From the scaffolding up, I hope they're improving it, and in short time the scaffolding will be gone. Definitely worth a visit...
B. S.
I love markets, mostly in the Med. But do love The Grainger. Everything you'd hope to find, from butchers, fruit & veg, bakers, clothing and eateries. Great local vibe. Recommend chinese dumpling bar, freshly made infront of you.
D. W.
What a beautiful example of architect. It's so well preserved. It's well worth popping your head in and just having a look. It's beautiful.
M. R.
Traditional indoor Market that offered a wide range of produce and goods. Fresh fruit and veg at incredibly cheap prices. Lots of good quality eateries and traders available with very friendly and welcoming staff. Lovely to have clean, public conveniences too. Would highly recommend visiting, as probably the best indoor market I've visited in the UK.
K. v.
An excellent range of stalls selling fresh fish, meat, fruit and vegetables. There are also many outlets for ethnic street foods - a fun place to have lunch, with an exciting varietyof choice. The only disappointment was that I would have hoped for a bigger selection of fabric/yarn/haberdashery stalls.
D. M.
Excellent offers on fruit and veg at various stalls in the market. Also fresh fish is very good and plenty of outlets for refreshments and various ho t and cold food selections. Not as big as it used to be but still well worth a visit.
J. M.
What's not to like in the Grainger market, you can still get fresh meat, and veg from the market stall, completed by the great fish counters, where the staff will keep you right on how to cook your purchase.
There the great cheese Matthews that's been there years, the ladies there will expertly tell you about their wonderful produce.
You can see the new businesses now opening with delis, greek, Italian foods and washed down with a beer from the firebrick brewing company.
K. A.
Love all the wonderful little shops here. I went to the new Soju&Gogi express stall. I had korean fried chicken and a bottle of soju. The chicken came with rice cakes in it which were nice and chewy. It was delicious!

Absolutely humbled by this fabulous shop.
Big thanks to the wonderful lady in the shop ,Jasmine, for delivering first class service . The pride of Jamaica, represented in the N.E. 🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲
J. B.
Good old fashioned market with great service and quality goods.. the butcher's and fruit and veg stalls are fantastic and the prices don't hurt your pocket which is what everyone needs these days and these are small independent trades who need to earn a living.. so come on folks, get yourself to the Granger market and bag yourself a bargain..
F. M.
Such a great market - undercover so no need to get damp on a rainy day. Wide selection of stalls from various types of food, crafts, clothing, vintage items, jewelry, butcher shops, fresh produce, cards, green and recyclable items, handbags and luggage - there really is something for everyone.
D. G. C.
A popular and historic market in the heart of Newcastle. It's possible to find good products as meat, fish and beer from local productors. Clothes shop at cheap prices and also nice restaurants to eat or popular places where take the breakfast. I like this place.
N. K.
Hard to find where your looking for at the moment as a lot of scaffolding is around for doing repairs to the ceiling by the looks of things. Seems to be alot of places to eat at more than anything, lot of change from years ago but still worth a walk through and a walk around. You can get some good stuff hear at great prices especially fruit.
m. k.
Iv being going to the grainger Market since I can remember.. I used to every week with my mam..I still go in when I can and still only shop at the same Butchers.. She used to go to the same Butchers time after time.. And a few other shops.. The market is a great friendly place.. Lovely people...
D. S.
There early on a Saturday morning, very quiet and lacked the atmosphere I remember. Planned to spend a couple of hours and was away after 45 mins!? Still managed to pick up what was lovely fruit.
Y. H.
Nice market, variety of stalls. Cafe served lovely food.
V. P.
Really nice place to visit. Love the old style feel of shopping in there and the shop owners are very friendly and helpful. Definitely recommend the old style sweet shop and the Cafe One 2 One. Really lovely people running both places.
T. S.
Last time we visited was about 18 years ago. Tried to buy some scotties, 18 years back everyone stocked them. This visit only one place had any, and they were not the same taste/texture. Seems another local speciality has disappeared.
Complaint over, its one of the best markets we have been to.
M. G.
Absolutely love it, groceries shopping cost you les with high quality of the products. And, Italian pizza 🍕 sold in slices is absolutely amazing. Love it.
B. M.
Fantastic experience all round, its got plenty of stalls and markets to suit all your shopping needs and the new food stalls that have recently been built inside are absolutely fantastic. I've got plans to go once a week to try a new food stall.
I. W.
Sadly it is now a shadow of it's former self. Hopefully once the roof of the main market hall has been repaired some of the magic will return. Still a good market to visit, especially for fresh produce.
D. H.
Lovely place to visit, shop, eat and drink
N. G.
The veggies and fruits are super cheap in this place.
I was on a day trip and found that the fresh strawberries which you'd get normally for 2 quid were like 75p and a pound for blueberries and grapes 50p.
Most of the places were closed but you'd find great many flowers and some meat shops in there too.
Definitely worth visiting once the lockdown restrictions are lifted completely.
P. S.
We came across this market by accident and was quite surprised to find a lovely collection of small shops and stalls inside. We did visit early in the morning and midweek so it was quiet and nearly empty but wouldn't be surprised if it got busy later and at weekends. Worth a visit.
A. H.
Absolutely loved it, it's got everything and more.
k. o.
Love the grainger Market, lots of great shops and little variety shops down every aisle. Love to sit with a coffee and remember when I used to visit on a Saturday morning as a child
R. S.
Lovely market with terrific range of stalls but slightly spoilt by the ongoing, for a couple of years, structural repairs and alterations. All staff doing their very best during the upheaval, hopefully to end before too much longer.
B. G.
What a cute little market, I loved it!
M. C.
I like the market it's old but still very popular. There is a wide variety of choice. Reasonable prices there are eateries and well worth a visit. There are toilets there and it is wheelchair friendly .....it doesn't have it's own parking but there are parking areas round about
C. H.
Grainger market is an absolute must see for any visitors to Newcastle, with a huge variety of shops, food outlets & general dealers. It could do with an overhaul of sorts as it looks like your typical old city building, but for shopping & eating out the choice is massive.
K. L.
Had a wonderful time exploring the market and city!!
H. S.
Visited this place for 70 years and still think it's the best - great variety, wonderful people- helpful, cheery and a pleasure to meet - love the Cubanos for a quick bite!
A. H.
Great place for having a good walk around many different shops I always enjoy going highly recommend it
p. l. (. G.
Still a great venue 50 years since my first visit. Lots of new food places, Still has the traditional fruit and vegetables and local butchers. Not forgetting Robinson's pet supplies and Scorpio shoes for Doc Marten fans.
A. h.
I shop here all the time it's a great place, you can buy fresh fish, meat, fruits and vegetables, key cutting, cheese stall, plants and flowers and lots more shops. If you need to take a break from shopping they have a few cafes to take the wait off you feet and have a cup of tea or coffee and something to eat.
E.
Despite it always been really cold I like walking around all the little shops. Most shop owners are nice and willing to help. It's worth a walk around even if it's just to see what shops are there, though I do have my favourites
D. S.
At the moment there is some building work going on. Stall holders are very helpful. You can get most things here. Including many places that sell wonderful meals.
P. L.
Cracking market with a lot of history! Another place where if ‘walls could talk’ you would be there for a while!!! Plenty of shops and cafes and the last market M&S in the world apparently. Get yourself weighed there too as it will be the most accurate weigh you will have apparently….
B. N.
Excellent deals available! Nice variety of shops and quite quirky! I like the deli for my Corn Beef square. Paul’s Tobacco for snot!
S. H.
I love markets. This one is special. So many cities have demolished their indoor markets but this one is going strong. Delis, cheesemongers, greengrocers, fishmonger, butchers, bakers, clothes, vintage, street food, cafes, plants and so much more. Step back in history and enjoy the browsing. Open all week.
M. W.
Amazing indoor market, small shop fronts rather than stalls, largest indoor market I have visited!!
Great hot chorizo and Cumberland sausage rolls!!
S. T.
Great market so much of everything within the market. We bought some pork and leek burgers but there was so much choice we could of chosen and wish we now had because the burgers are lovely!
C. J.
Excellent, a step back to how shopping used to be. There is a cafe and different stalls with Fruit and Veg, Clothes etc. There is even a stall (Matthews) that sells every type off Cheese you could want, they also make cheeseboards up for you if you ask. Please visit you won't leave empty handed.
A. G.
Very good for all bargains and a good place to stock up ypur freezer with the meat parcels the butchers sell,
Some stalls sell some unusual types of clothes as well and there are some nice card shops I there, jewellery shops, craft shops and a good shop that sells pet food and doggy outfits, there is something for everyone in all walks of life.
D. T.
It is a fascinating old structure with some unique shops. The cheese shop (Matthews) has some fantastic specialist cheeses and the number of food outlets is increasing all of the time.
R. R.
I genuinely love it here. Some of the best food and best products in the entire city.
J. A.
Lovely old school market. Highly recommend coffee and a brownie at Pet Lamb - tiny little patisserie tucked away in a corner. What a find ❤️❤️
T. k.
Was OK just like any market really
S. A.
Great market place, enjoyed wondering around looking at the different shops and stalls. The butchers and fish displays were excellent.
C. B.
A great place to browse and experience an multitude of vendors. A little bare in places with closed shops and still has a stuck in the 80’s feel about it. It wouldn’t take much to make it into a very trendy place to hang out.
S. B.
Fabulous Market with some good places for lunch or a snack. Also very good butchers and fishmongers. Lots of clothing and miscellaneous stalls to keep you busy!
K. A.
I love this traditional market. Lots of stalls selling very reasonably priced good. In fact some real bargains can be found.
D. R.
Great place to visit. Food places with tables and chairs. All relaxed and picked up an unexpected find in the toy shop.
J. A.
A wonderful place to grab a light lunch or two from the variety of food vendors in here. Variety and quality. I love this place!
V. B.
Been going to this market for over 60 years. Love the choices you get here, & the breakfasts.
V. K.
A good market with a wide range of stalls. We went to the Oliver café for dinner and the food and waiters were perfect. Worth a visit
N. B.
Best market in the universe. If you haven't been for a while get yourself back...the artisan and global food is to die for
E. S.
Nice market with wide variety goods. A great many take away good and a few sit down restaurants. Nice way to spend a 15 minutes.
M. M.
Plenty of local produce with fresh vegetables, fruits and meat. A few small restaurants to relax.
J. Y.
5 STARS FOR THE TRADERS. 3 STARS FOR THE ENVIRONMENT THEY HAVE TO COPE WITH.
Bit disappointed that half of the market is still undergoing massively disruptive maintenance repairs many years after it started. Has the work been abandoned? Is the Cooncil responsible? I feel so sorry for the traders who have to try to survive under these circumstances.
In reality, the Grainger Market is a shrinking and declining retail environment compared with its vibrant past. In July 2019 the Cooncil stated "The Grainger Market and Arcade will remain open for business throughout the works, which are planned to be completed in March 2020". Yawn yawn. Nearly 3 years later ???
Of course there are a lot of excellent traders within a pretty quiet scene. Mathews Cheese Specialist are excellent and well informed about their cheeses.
On my last visit I could only find two!!! Greengrocers. There might be another? The quality/price looked good but the range of produce was pretty ordinary. I prefer say Hutchinsons on Stanhope Street, HiYoU Supermarket on Newgate Street or Morrisons at Byker. Indian, Thai, Cambodian, Vietnamese and Chinese food is pretty much mainstream by now in Newcastle, isn't it?
5+ stars to the traders. 3 stars for the environment they have fo cope with.
d.
Love this place ... have developed a tradition of having an oyster from the fishmonger to start every visit👌... maybe not quite up there with the best continental markets but getting there ... always a great atmosphere
P. L.
Took the kids to see Santa here. Can't wait to return and try out the food stalls.
N. F.
Same as always lovely market could do with some nice up to date shoos like the good od days but with the price of rents they charge doubt that'll happen but always very friendly in there
m.
Grainer Town, the historic heart of the city and Grainger Market is without doubt the very best part of it. The an indoor market and an 19th century development to replace the old markets back in the days. There’s lots of quirky, independent and boutique shops, many of which retained (replicated?) pre-war architecture. There's also lots of eateries dotted around the market and a sort of food court where many of the eateries have seatings.
I came here to Newcastle for the weekend and visited on a Saturday. It’s a shame the market is not opened on Sundays, else I’d visited that day too. Would definitely visit agin the next time I’m in Newcastle.
S. E.
Great place to shop lots of different stalls, and very nice butchers, also some really good cafes with a wide variety of foods.
F. H.
Ok for a wander around, near the Hotel, didn't buy anything there, but was a rushed visit, definitely a place of character.

Very old fashioned pub. But, that is it's charm. Four poster bed was very comfortable. Steak and Stilton Pie was excellent. Went for the races. Would stay there again.
This is the Black Swan in York

The market is growing on me with every visit. Butchers, groceries, good coffee options, lots of food (dumplings, find Biang Biang noodles for noodles!). Several bargin shops plus traditional cafes. A must visit and try. Highly recommended.
M. T.
Nice shops good variety and even places to sit down have something to eat and drink.
J. C.
Excellent large covered market with a wide range of fresh veg meat & fish as well as clothing, pet supplies, health food as well as the strange and unusual. Currently being renovated but still trading.
T. R.
Unique atmosphere, traders are helpful if you are looking for a particular shop. Good selection of merchandise/goods.
M. S.
Love walking round this market it has a touch of the old and new. Meat and fresh veg. At low prices as well as clothes shops.
N. P.
We had not been to Grainger Market for ages... but will be back very soon, we loved it! The independent shops and cafés are so quirky; the food is great value for money; the people very friendly; and it had clean public toilets. What more could you want? It is going to be one of our regular places from now on.
Update: we have been back and will keep going!
j. m.
Great variety of things on stalls.
Ate in cafe called Olivers had a lovely cream scone and capacino was great 👍
F. B.
With all the repairs going on it's a bit of a mess but it will be worth it to see the finished article, it's a pity there isn't more geordie influence in the outlets, but it has a very international feel about it, too many food outlets in my opinion but it does work.
M. L.
Good indoor Market with great eating and drinking places. Fantastic range of shops and variety of products
I. J. C.
I've known this place, since being a child - some 60+ years ago. It's barely changed. Good old fashioned shopping at good old fashioned prices. Meat, fruit and veg always fresh. I hope developers NEVER pull this place down

Love looking around this market, we get our coffee beans from one stall but we were disappointed with the noodle house, street food, very expensive our meals came out at different times mine 30 minutes after my husbands, no apologies, just an indifference serving Chinese people before others
Will not return and not recommend

B. V.
A place which takes you back into classics. Food chains, food outlets, take aways, coffee shop. All will remind you of a 100 years old or more older way of shopping and eating. Shops are well maintained. Some shops have options for eating out with limited seating.
Indian, Chinese, Middle East, East European food outlets will welcome you.
This place has also got shops for clothing, foot wear, vegetables, beer and liquor shops, etc
L. H.
Brilliant place to shop. Lovely butchers and fruit stalls. Really enjoyed the pizza slice.

C. P. V.
The market is big and you can get varieties of fresh produces with cheap price. Having a coffee break here is also fantastic. I really enjoy it.
J. A.
Many of the smaller retail shops are no longer trading which was very distressing as people's livelihoods have been affected. On a brighter note enjoyed the time in the market looking around and enjoying a very nice lunch. There were a good amount of shoppers it was nice to see people looking about and trading. I was very happy with my purchases.
A. D.
Fabulous. Local produce. Haberdashery. Eco friendly produce. Food. Drink. Funky clothing. What's not to like ?

J. Y.
It's a shame a lot of shops are closed but it's a good place for food products.
T. S.
This was our first visit to the GM. We were filling in time. This was time well spent. The variety available from the many, many stalls is quite astounding. The market was busy but not too busy, this enabled us to wander round and marvel at the variety. We dont have this level of variety where we live. Will certainly return and try some of the amazing looking street food.
UPDATE April 2022
Grainger Market is still a vibrant market with a healthy foot fall.
P. S.
The little micro brewery shop is brilliant, good beers and friendly staff. Worth a try.
W. F.
A nice market to have a look around.
I might be old fashioned but I hope for bargains at a market and while some of the stalls / cafes are cheap, it seems the hipsters are taking over the place and their prices don't seem in line with traditional markets. But maybe that's just me...
S. M.
Love it there. Huge variety and good prices
A. S.
Great place for street food options. Slice pizza is a must try.
D. P.
Not as many butchers or fruit and veg stalls,, more places to take away food, but still a fine old building

The Grainger market is an amazing place which houses many interesting and useful shops. There is a shop for almost everything you can imagine, and the restaurants are really nice. In particular, I would recommend Acropolis, which serves traditional Greek cuisine for a low and affordable price. 10/10

Lots of stalls selling same stuff. Cafe was very friendly with quick service and great banter
J. R.
A lovely mix of artisan stores and some fab places to get food. Can't wait to visit again. As an update to this, my daughter has just been diagnosed with coeliac disease. Today we walked around almost all of the food places with none offering a single gluten free option. Such a shame.
J. K.
Love the local atmosphere.,ir looks like the place where normal people go.
K. G.
Still some good stalls selling clothes...old style butchers...and...now craft beer sellers & artisan food outlets....Brilliant to visit for shopping & a few drinks & fantstic food...all within the historic market..
J. H.
Love the Grainger Market, a wide range of retail units from Doc Martin shop, butchers, bakers, cafe, fruit and veg, just to name a few, and best of all, it's all under cover, so even if it's raining, once inside the Grainger Market you remain dry.
L. S.
Old school English bazaar. Lol
It's cool for show to tourist or take my grandma there. Bit old fashion but cool. Not everyone likes this so depends who u go with

If you want to experience the true, traditional North England, don't miss this place. A very unimpressive building conceals a warm, friendly, clean, neat market with butchers, watchmakers, tailors, fruit vendors, farmers and eating places. Grainger market will never fail to cheer you up.
I. D.
I loved it, the market has everything you would expect in a market. It is clean throughout and everyone is friendly.
J. B.
Not like it was which is such a shame lots of traders no longer there end of an era 😕
L. C.
Amazing place, I wish more markets were like this place! Amazing comic book store, lovely retro gaming store, amazing food places, great coffee place, great looking butchers and a food weighhouse stall, some good clothing stores, and a great place to pick up fabric; ribbons; lace etc for craft! It's just a great market.
Only downside is that there are a few unoccupied stalls which is a shame.
a.
A few empty spaces these days. We had had a nice light breakfast cafe was very clean and great value for money. Had a wee wander was a wee bit quieter than I remember but still had lots of choice.
G. L.
Great place to visit and spent time with friends in the different eateries within.
S. K.
Lovely market with a mix of traditional stores and modern
G. K.
A bit cluttered - a map of the shops would be a very nice feature to this cool and atmospheric location.
J. W.
Plenty of good bargains and eateries, an enjoyable day out
A. R.
Hard to argue with somewhere with this many cheap fruit and veg shops or butchers.
We love the Spanish food and wine shop!
P. R.
Great mix of traditional market stalls and trendy food places.
C. S.
Really surprised how nice it is. Will definitely will be shopping there again.
F. V.
I really liked 👍, it's the market that every city should have.
J. B.
Traditional market with many varied eateries. V good cheese stall tucked away at the bottom.
Z. P.
Spectacular Victorian building complete with some original shop fronts including Mark's & Spencer. Lovely food stalls and eclectic mix of clothing, household, decorative items and food stalls. Well worth a visit.
J. P.
Great old market still has a lot of its old features, worth a visit
C. C.
Authentic, atmospheric and unique. A great place to step back in time and wander. Quirky shops and lovely places to buy food on-the-go. Pet Lamb Patisserie is my fav, lip smashing cakes and brilliant brownies. Check it out!
C. B.
Reasonable selection of products but some obvious price hikes
D. A.
In door market very nice foods local and national
J. G.
Great selection of vendors & great atmosphere, well worth a visit.
R. S. (.
They are renovating the roof. The stalls are still open and I found a great all day breakfast.
Went looking for some specific items and found them all.
S. C.
The Grainger market is fantastic. It is great feature to our City. I am wondering though what the big white boxes are doing beside the toilets and Dr Martin shop, Hairdressers as its quiet a struggle for me in my wheelchair.
G. B.
Mint place, love it. Some great food vendors.
G. W.
Traditional market in lovely Victorian building. Wide range of produce, well presented and competitively priced. Excellent to see markets like this still survive.
G. W.
When in Newcastle we always visit granger Market. They have excellent cafes. The range of shops is really good. Butchers Bakers ,a good costermonger not forgetting the greengrocers. It's a fresh produce market all under one roof
J. H.
Nice indoor market out the wind and rain. A bit empty but still plenty business going on. I go a lot.
S. D.
Great and busy market with lots of lovely shops and restaurants
j. f.
This place is like the original heart of Newcastle a shopping center where you can go and get anything from meat and veg to getting jewellery
m. l.
Started gardening last weekend and got beautiful flowers at the market. So pleased I went there
S. N.
It's an institution. Great independent stores selling global culinary delights.
It's still bloody terrifying though. Random crack heads just mincing about and that shop that sells tabs behind a bullet proof screen.
Take the wrong exit and you land on Clayton street. When the sun is out that can be an equally exciting and horrifying experience for the inquisitive. Think of that bar from star wars and multiply it by 10.
Anyways, highly recommend but remain vigilant at all times.
PS Go to the pizza place
P. L.
We had a pleasant walk around. Much more done up than I remembered.
A. R.
They do a good Sunday dinner staff are lovely.
A. L.
A beautiful place with great places to eat and bargains to be found.
J. C.
Had home made soup with dumpling. Excellent.
C. J.
It's been years since I've been to the Grainger Market, but the local atmosphere and buzz is still about the place, a load of new shops and trendy cafes and lots more now since I was last there, brilliant place to shop and have some food and coffee, love it!
P. H. H.
Lovely indoor Market with lots of eateries. Friendly.
D. K.
For years, for whatever reason, we haven't been to Grainger Market. Recently been three times!! Really interesting and wide variety of specialist shops and good shops at that! Genuinely loved the experience and will be going back there on a regular basis now. We had Italian pizzas (some of the best we've ever had!) and Dumplings which were clearly a huge favourite as quite a line, and Greek food and a great coffee from a lovely specialist coffee store and then the range of shops to buy from where surprisingly wide ranging!! Didn't know this was on our doorstep!
g. c.
Great cakes loads of vegan stuff so yummy
C. D. (. S. H.
Great range of shops in this venerable indoor market. From Italian delis to vintage clothes via butchers! Will be even greater once the renovations are completed!
S. T.
Growing up in this city, Newcastle wouldn't be the same without the Grainger market. It's by far the most traditional English market in the North East.
S. T.
Excellent market and you can make your own sausages! The pizza bar and the dim sum place are also fantastic.
I. D.
Excellent indoor market, with loads of selection
n. d.
Love this place full of individual market stalls selling everything from baby clothes to ironmongery, butcher meat and fresh coffee. Plenty of choice of places to eat and drink to. A must visit if you are in the city
C. P.
Love the street food, especially the Chinese dumplings, just amazing.
s. B.
Work needs to be finished taking to long it's been 12 months and over stop paying the people who run City till its finished it will be done in 6 weeks
M. R.
Has lost a lot of its charm since the proposed roof works were due to be carried out around 2years ago. The huge white columns erected block easy access to stalls around the perimeter of Grainger Market and detract from casual browsing.
K. S.
Good selection of shops, had a breakfast in one of the cafes which was nice but would have liked the option to get a fried egg rather than scrambled.. kids enjoyed there bacon sandwich
T. H.
La Casa Deli are truly superb. The most divine meats and cheeses. The couple who run the place are lovely. Well worth stopping for a delicious lunch!
A. P.
I love the Grainger market go there for a cupper you can get a bargain
A. K.
Really lovely street food loads of great options, and vegan too!
B. M.
Had lunch in the market a number of market traders have closed down. Building work was going on when we were there.
E. B.
Love this place. It has all kinds of shops you have got to go if you are visiting Newcastle.
M.
An old fashioned market with independent traders. Fantastic.
C. E.
First of all, I think we should support the tradesmen by shopping at the shops here. Macro economy develops from micro economy.
J. P.
Fabulous collection of stalls, with fantastic food selections especially
L. F.
GeordieGifts is in here, I highly recommend these quality humorous cards and plaques. People should visit the Grainger market there are lots of bargains to be had, and if you need a bite to eat, food is readily available hot or cold.... Lots of quirky Valentines day cards to be found in Geordie Gifts Alley4... A nostalgic market loved by all that venture through from all corners of the world. History is vast and there is even an underground tunnel which is opened to the public on occasions... Definitely a great go to when visiting Newcastle. 😊
l. j. c.
...always make time to pay a visit here if I'm in the city centre... a vastly underappreciated piece of Newcastles history! 👌🏻
P. L.
Still the main reason to go shopping in town, best butchers and green grocers for any budget and the cheesemonger is out of the world.
R. L.
Excellent value for fruit and a pleasant experience.
J. H.
Love M and S here good bargains
R. H.
Some good little quirky shops and some good old fashioned deli counters and butchers
p. J.
First time visit unfortunately parking let's this place down loads of empty spaces in the surrounding car parks but lots of them reserved for pass holders
S. L.
I love this indoor market. The building its self is sight to see, with many original features. Its has a great fruiters and cheese stalls, not to mention many individual traders there, selling unique things, plus lovely little places to eat if you get hungry
L. B.
Obviously the pandemic has had an effect but a lot of stalls have reopened. It's a great place for fresh produce, clothes and food. The location is handy for the railway station and bus stops.
A. B.
Great place to stroll around. Many different places to eat and lovely staff.
P. H.
Can't wait for it to be all repaired and more stall's being used otherwise fine
G. A.
Good selection of independent retailers but it's unbelievably cold
M. J.
Small traders in a convenient large market hall. Every kind of business and food stalls. Excellent part of a day trip to Newcastle.
M. U.
Good place for buying vegetables, fruits and fishes
N. M.
I like Grainger Market always prowl round it and then get something to eat plenty of eateries to choose from
D. D.
Very busy, loads of stalls and shops well worth a visit.
S. F.
What a place! Shopping and street food a must visit if you are in Newcasty.
G. D. (.
Most but all not all stores are open at the moment but there is still a great selection to choose from. It's easy to get around and they have a well planned system to keep everyone covid safe. Well worth a visit especially to help support these hardworking owners
R. C.
Great combination of stalls and food places. Had some amazing dumplings and a lovely beer shop. Definitely a great place to go for a look around and a quick lunch!
P. D.
There's some nice stalls and food is nice
C. H.
Great mix of tasty street and fresh produce, real gem at the heart of the city
C. S.
Great shops & very friendly and helpful traders. We should all use this place more often !
G. W.
Great indoor market with lots of independent shops. Well worth supporting all year round
A. M.
Only started visiting the market as an older lad, there is a homely vibe about the place. Be that the smell possibly?
Family butchers working away make me feel humble and hungry. The one two one cafe at lot 121 has a good laid back atmosphere if you're of an older generation... cracking fish n chips.
You then realise that it has more range further you go, the grainger market hosts a Doc Marten Custom shoe shop, sure it can be expensive but what would you expect.
N. E. S.
A warm and nice place with variety of shops and restaurants under one roof.
R. U.
Nice clean indoor Market in the heart of the City, wide selection of stalls selling food, clothes, books etc, plenty places to eat, nice place to browse and pick up some bargains.
a. a.
Hundreds of shops to wander. Old-style butchers, fruiterers and florists. Artisan bakers, cheesemongers, jewelers, an original Marks &Spencer Penny Bazzar, a fabulous Spanish deli which is being extended to incorporate a tapas bar, Fresh fish, an oyster bar, flatbread, Turkish, Dim sum, Pet shop, Scorpio shoes, a wig shop and so much more.
I. P.
Quirky,homley,excellent sausage rolls ,geordie bangers.
D. K.
Great place to visit good for meat , fruit , vegetables. and great sea food good for coffee shops and if you have a look around probably the best bacon sandwich in town....one or two empty stalls if full would take it back to *****'s..
S. R.
Still lots of work going on but still great place to visit
M. F.
Beautiful stands with different shops. Fresh fruits, fish and meat. Take a way food or eat in. Spanish shop and the oldest M&S shop. Hairdressers, shoes shop, bakery and clothing.
P. E.
Great shopping in a covered market. Good variety of shops and lots of ways to turn. Not the same as when I was a lad but then nostalgia is a thing of the past.
L. M.
This is what I wish St johns market in Liverpool could be ... A real mix of fruit, veg, meat fish random stuff & cool places to eat such as the dumpling tea bar. Worth a visit
J. G.
Been there today. Always great selection of goods! Takes me back to when my parents to used take me there at the weekend! Great 👍
J. g.
Some of the stores opening times vary so be careful not to make an early trip thinking they are open for 9 and have to hang around for an hour looking like your lost because you can't remember what aisle they're in. So pleased that after covid things are getting back to normal and the stores I previously enjoyed shopping in have remained open such as the wool shop and card crafting shop.
C.
Best place for street food in Newcastle plus lots of local shops. Greengrocers, tailors, butchers, cheesemongers etc etc. Definitely check this place out.
J. C.
I know the roof is being repaired but it is affecting the ability to get round the market which is a shame
T. J.
Excellent market one off best l have been to
J. M.
Great indoor Market with an excellent range of shops and cafes. Love the cheese shop and the Nepalese clothes shop. The Greek, Italian and Spanish eateries are all excellent, as is the Indian street food. Not forgetting the geordie gifts and the lovely little jewellers.
A.
A Great market,I can't wait to visit again next time in Newcastle
M. S.
Some lovely shops - Nil living, plants, cheese, cakes, fruit and veg, butchers and more, I feel sorry they have had to cope with the building works for so long- that's why I've not given 5 stars.
J. W.
This market closes at 5.30pm, we walked through the market to buy fresh food at 5pm, everything was closed. Either change trading times or stay open. Very poor customer service. If people visitors from other areas/countries were to visit it would be a dissapointment.
P. W.
Fabulous place more people should be shopping there
H. B.
So much amazing variety. Excellent for your every need.
J. N.
Brilliant place to shop could spend hours looking around the different shops had a beautiful pizza from slice at very reasonable price plus a delicious coffee from pumphreys which was by far the best tasted from any outlet I've tried service was exceptional anybody visiting the city should make time to visit
m. c.
Went there before attending a Newcastle United home game, they have some canny stores and they sell alsorts
M. m.
Old victorian Market from flowers to fruit and veg, butchers bakers, shoes, clothes and many more
I. J.
A good place to get fresh groceries for a bargain
M. M.
The Grainger Market is a great place to shop at . There are several kiosks that carry a variety of products including
Food
Drinks
Clothes
Toys
Shoes and boots
and much more .
Pop into the market and have a look at what is available for sale and see if you can find anything that suits your needs .
However , please be aware that if a business lacks returning customers , it will disappear forever .
Like I say in my reviews ,
Always be aware of the prices of what you are looking for .
J. J.
Good selection of stalls and places to get a snack.
A. C.
What a great place. It's COVID safe. It's vibrant, full of great traders selling fresh produce. Takeaway eateries selling beautiful and freshly prepared foods and drink. Greek fayre, pizza by the slice, mac n'cheese to name but a few. Also a great place to grab some Dr Martens, a new light bulb or Pet supplies, or perhaps just have your hair cut. I love this place. Let's all support it.
T. R.
If you are looking for a quick lunch, this is the place to go.
r. s.
Love going there and always a great atmosphere and supporting our small shop keepers.
K. P.
Traditional market place, with something for everyone. Fruit and vegetables, butchers, fish mongers, clothes, haberdashery, cafes, doughnuts and cake shops. Lots of local independent retailers, all within a indoor market place.
s. C.
brilliant for fresh foods and everything else you might need at fabulous prices love it in the Granger market Newcastle
R. H.
The variety of outlets was brilliant. The fish and butcher stalls stood out. If I lived in Newcastle, I'd be in here all the time!
B. P.
Went to get a battery re newed in one watch and a link taken out of another. 15 minutes later both done and only cost £5 but you have to pay in cash. Very friendly service and he explained there was only one cobler/ key cutter in the market now and he told me where to go.
Got 3 keys cut for £10 while we waited.
We also bought fruit at another stall: straws, raspberries, apples a£1 each and lovely moist dates for £2. All fruit much better than you can buy at Aldi.
Just remember to take cash for the market.
H. p.
Great food and fresh seafood here. Yum yum yum
M. H.
Amazing place. Much loved for many years and it gets better with each passing year. The place is steeped in history and a true Newcastle treasure in my eyes. I love the variety of stalls, units and pop up shops. You can always get amazing food and produce. Everyone is more than happy to have a chat and a natter.
S. B.
Lovely place to visit and shop and also very friendly 😊
B. M.
Grainger Market is a Newcastle Upon Tyne institution which despite all the changes that have been going on around it has managed to pretty much maintain it's own identity. If one is looking for a shopping experience with a difference then one can't do any worse than spending time at the Grainger Market. There are cafe and Takeaway establishments including Pumphreys the coffee connoisseurs and a Marks & Spencer's establishment as they used to be and has been there for decades. A new addition to the Market are a number of Micro Breweries which enhances the availability of choices.
C. S.
Spent one of the most enjoyable afternoons I've had in a very long time in the company of some wonderful ..kind.. helpful and interesting people...this is why it's so very important that we make an extra effort to support our local grainger market and places like this to prevent losing them for ever. Some of the conversations I had with the stall owners were probably the best and most interesting I've had in ages ..these people really do want to help you..do the best deals they can for you and get to know the customer whilst kindly sharing information ,stories both topical and, personal about themselves and the area we live in. I for one will be going back very soon and I strongly urge anyone wanting a charming feel good factor afternoon to do the same.
M. J.
Plenty of places to shop from butchers, bakeries and fruit & veg as well as non food places and places to eat
J. M.
Good market plenty of variety and nice grub 👌, worth a wander around if you have the time.

A. C.
Coffee and snacks are great lots to choose from
A. T.
It's a lovely traditional market with a wide diversity of vendors. It's WC's are attended and well looked after. Great for fruit, meat, fish. Best place in Newcastle to buy coffee beans/ground, Pumphrey's. Cafe's cheap and good for eat in take away. You must go in and have a look, it's a covered market if you need to get out of the rain!
M. W.
Fantastic indoor market. Plenty of choice and good value. Beats shopping in plastic malls.
R. d. G.
I like how the place offers opportunities for more responsible and sustainable grocery shopping. I often return a little disappointed however, as the plastic use is still massive and the extend of unsustainable products is always more than I hope for when I enter. It would be really great if Grainger Market would adopt a vision of being a place for responsible shopping. It definitely is the right setting for it and some shops are seeming to take a lead, like the amazing Indian fast food place that can be found here
A. T.
Beautiful market , proper butchers ,café etc
A. E.
An experience in itself. Wide variety of goods on sale. Veg fish meat clothing cafes
N. W.
The best bangers in the country. I'd have given it 6 stars if it were possible.
J. B.
Nice little market place. Lots of stalls were closed but that could be due to the fact we're only coming out of the pandemic. Plenty fruit and veg stalls and wax melts and records stall.
T. F.
Great love buying fruit top notch
K. F.
Since lockdown I have regularly got deliveries from the Market. Fruit and veg, meat, bread, even a whole pizza! Fresh, great quality, and often next day delivery. I haven’t used the supermarkets except for few exceptions. Fantastic
D. B.
One of the best places you can go. Amazing food and I love the M&S as well.
A. M.
Love this place. Some great butcher's, fishmongers and greengrocers for all of your good needs. There's also a place where you can full up on soap, shampoo etc by refilling your own receptacles, so you can cut back on plastic!! Great idea!!
A. J.
If you're Irish, then imagine English Market and you'll get an idea. For the rest of you, it is an open market hall (with roofs) built in 1800's, featuring 100+ vendors selling produce, meat & vintage goods.
Old school vibes.
A. D.
Love these covered market places. Great combination of different stall/shops. The fruit stalls were incredible. We bought some grapes and they were delicious and have lasted a week! The pack was huge! Just going to finish them off today. If I lived closer I'd always buy fruit from here.
N. S.
Lovely little indoor Market for everything from food drinks baby clothes and eco friendly refill station
S. H.
Lots of lovely small businesses who will try there best to get you what you want big up the zero water store
S. S.
Went back 3 times in one day it was brilliant
G. W.
Brilliant City Centre traditional market, get you weekly shop here and ignore the supermarkets, especially if you want good quality fish. But there us everything you need here except for tins.

Great place to find great food
J. D.
Lovely old fashioned indoor market. This took me back in time. Fantastic ambience.
M. B.

g. w. E.
Good range of stalls love the cheese selection
R. A. W.
Fantastic local market.
Fresh produce, high quality goods and services.
I had a haircut in here and the barber was fast, friendly and cheap.
Support local businesses, they don't come any more local than this. Get off Northumberland street and get into the grainger market. Yeah!
B. N.
Love it now with all the little foodie places
M. T.
Love this market. You can find everything here, from second hand clothes and books to fresh vegetables and pizza 🍕. It's also very quaint and feels like it's jumped right out of a previous era 😊
S. a. E. d.
Brilliant place to come. Loved all the market stalls. We bought so much fruit and veg could quite easily have become vegans. Except the fish stalls tempted us a little much. Thing we are going to need bigger arms to carry all the stuff we wanted to buy.
D. T.
Weĺl it's The Grainger Market... all other teviews are superfluous.
M. D.
Lovely atmosphere well stocked stalls more food stalls big choice
C. B.
Was great and market was nice and clean

E. R.
Great indoor Market and place to eat. Fantastic eclectic mix of independent shops/stalls and places to eat. Worth a visit just to browse and soak in the atmosphere.
K. J.
Brilliant place. Loads of hidden gems
G. P.
Undergoing work at the moment but fantastic traditional market, with the traditional trades you would expect. Plus some modern spins on thrift
M.
Far better than any supermarket 👍
J. M.
Very traditional market in great condition
V. K.
Soon after lockdown the fabulous traders, management and staff of the Grainger Market pulled all the stops out and quickly set up their wonderful home delivery service. I have now had over half a dozen deliveries, including fruit, veg, cheeses, bread, baked goods, milk, butter and plants. I can honestly say they and the great drivers have been a lifesaver to me and I can heartily recommend them. I really hope that they can see their way to retaining this fabulous delivery service long after everything starts opening up again. I for one will never use large supermarkets again. Thank you, Grainger Deliveries 💕
J. Y.
this is definitely a " go to " place in newcastle..some great cafes , great place for fresh fish .meat .fruit and veg
great prices also ...
M. C.
As a result of COVID-19, its a lot quieter with fewer store fronts open. However, social distancing is well taken care of with some fronts keeping a good eye on track and trace. My personal favourite shop is matthews cheese. I do thoroughly enjoy a visit here and would definitely recommend it.
j. l.
Always loved the grainger market. Things have changed in the years but I still go in for my fruit. Meat and veg. The people around will tell you where best to go. But generally all places you cantgo wrong. I like the fish stalls. The lads are helpful and know their stuff. I always ask for Tom. He has been their years even when my children were small and hes a great help and his produce are delicious
E. S.
Love this place! You can find anything you need. The atmosphere is so great, the shops, the food market. Love it. 💘
T. D.
Lot of different small shops under one roof, supporting local businesses
a. C.
Always seems to be getting repered but is very good for a good butcher and with ther been a few choices the prices are cept low ISH as well and you can always get your veggies here as well
T. P.
Love coming to the Grainger Market. Just wished I lived closer as I would buy alot of my fresh fruit and veg and fish from here. Lots of variety. Brings back so many memories of visiting here when I was a child
g. m.
Great market full of history and great shopping
D. L.
Great market with lots of good stalls selling a wide range of stuff. A lot of building work going on at the moment detracts from the appeal but hopefully they will be finished soon.
C. P.
Fantastic place, has always had all I need.
Steeped in history & has a tone of different stalls & shops with great prices.
I have not been in for a few years now but went today & though it has changed a little in one part, where the Butchers & Fruit stalls are based it was like stepping back in time. I felt young again.
K. M.
Great selection of stalls. In particular the fresh pizza stall and the Pet Lamb patisserie are faves. A must on a visit!
c. u.
There are many very interesting quirky shops and good food vendors from excellent dumpling to epic chicken wings you can't go wrong.
L. W.
I love this place, everything you need under one roof, fab coffee, pizza, fresh fruit and vegetables, nice little gift shops and essential items can be found
J.
Love markets! The meat, vegetables, fish, cheeses, hams, bakery, and cooked food stalls are affordable and of good quality. I particularly enjoy the cheese stall <3 also, there is a small chinese stall around the corner that does freshly made dumplings and buns every hour. Totally yummy! This market also has very popular pizzas and burgers that are absolutely delicious. Worth visiting and frequenting :)
P. j.
Nice mince & dumplings sold here
F. M.
Lots of interesting international food stalls. Liked look of veggie Indian and made a note to stop there next time. Usual excellent fruit options. Quick friendly service from the shoe repair shop. Wrap up warm when you visit on cold days though
P. C.
One of the must visits in Newcastle. Great selection of good from food to essentials all locally sourced. A great place for street food with authentic flavours and locally sourced meats, fruits vegetables and fish. Alternative shops in which you can find pretty much everything. Just get in and get lost and explore
D.
Cheap fair, locals will enjoy getting fresh food produce. Interesting sadly nothing for us there.
D. B.
I used to visit the market a lot when I lived in Newcastle,it has a great atmosphere.
I plan more visits to try new and well reviewed eating places, especially an Indian one.
Meat eaters will find a good choice of visible products, not all plastic wrapped.I used to get a good deal on bones for our dog.
It is a great place for browsing, especially in wet weather. There are competitive prices on clothing, trinkets, cheeses.Vegetable shops used to be plentiful, not so much now. Unfortunately ,the cheap fruit I carried home was not so good.
The market is very accessible, with lots of bus stops right outside,do visit.
R. B.
Grainger Market is a gem in my opinion. I have only known it since Covid19 came and had a huge impact on Newcastle's economy, but shopping in the covered market is still a pleasure. A number of the shops remain closed, but others appear to be thriving - a marvellous cheesemonger, well-stocked butchers and greengrocers, a French patisserie, a specialist coffee and tea shop, and plenty more. If your appetite is whetted then there is a choice of takeaway foods on offer (while the café is still closed). I can recommend Redhead for a very gourmet mac & cheese, which is simply the very best I have ever tasted. There is also a proper Chinese dumpling shop that has been recommended to me, but its popularity means there's often a queue there too. Apart from being a foodie's paradise, Grainger is home to other businesses that sell things you really want and need. And if it's raining outside, you won't get wet!
M. G.
Historic indoor market, with interesting stalls and facades. Would be five stars, but by 4pm most of it was closed/closing.
J.
This place is full of history, a great place for a mooch; for me it's usually for a quick snack from the lush food stalls- the pizza place is amazing (pepperoni or margherita) however, they do get a bit busy around lunch so best to come just before or after. Occasionally there is a few bargains to be found in the different shops. It's so different from what's on the streets outside so it's brilliant! Come and look around the independent traders- don't forget to grab a pic n mix on your way out

Many stalls and specialist sellers such as Redbrick Brewery based in Blaydon On Tyne. Many craft and vintage clothes stores and specialist food retailers. They are just getting up and running again and need local support more than ever!

Lots of choice and varieties of different traders. Food, shoes, butchers, veg and bread. Worth a visit

Great place for fruit and Meat although it has all sorts.
I go to the hairdresser there it has a waiting your turn system which is great for me not having to make an appointment.
It's got a good old-fashioned weight house to get yourself weight.
A proper good market worth giving it a look

Got some great bargains today. 2 bags of organic flour from the zero waste shop for a £2.00 and 3 small witch sole from Lindsays fishmongers for £1.20. Lots of friendly chat. Always love the Grainger Market.

A fabulous resource at the heart of Newcastle. Undergoing renovations and hard times due to covid but mostly open as usual. Great fresh food, clothes, shoes. Essential part of any shopping trip to the toon.

Loads of good independent shops here, Let There Be Music is phenomenal and the owner is a canny bloke

Great market place for fresh fruits and vegetables. Butchers and an any Chinese dumplings and tea shop. Really nice to walk around and explore this market place just that a lot of the shops are shut during these difficult times.

Cheese shop amazing very friendly and helpful staff

It's ok but not what it used to be, the rude behaver from a certain goth/alternative shop leaves a lot to be desired

A good old fashioned indoor market set in what seems to be the original victorian market. All nice privately owned local market stalls where the prices are very competitive and bargains to be had. A worth a visit.

A lovely indoor market with a huge range of products. Well worth a visit as some stalls sell unusual things like a stall selling Turkish lamps with a twist. They are beautiful if only I had room for one!

Good for tourists or locals looking to browse.
Been on our doorstep for years but never really took the time to have a look and see what was available. We were pleasantly surprised, a huge variety of stalls and shops, mostly very reasonable in terms of price and quality. Very easy to get lost, so pick a direction and stick with it.

A little treasure trove. Each stall has its own strengths and weaknesses. Some are better than others, but whatever your interest you will find something. The butcher's are amazing, neat clothes, gaming shops, books, food, special interests...

Fruit and veg shops great bargains. The meat is also good - you get 2 x gammon hocks for £5. What a bargain!!!

Lots of units shut or turned into coffee places. Unpleasant attitude from staff in one place due to my taking a slice of pizza from one stall in with me. Certainly won't be going to that one again.
