Having found Colour & Cloth online, Christine directed me to Brian who kindly overhauled and serviced my lovely treasure of a find: (a beautiful hand crank sewing machine "Sylvia" made by Harrods) and traced the model number back to 1876. The quick turnaround on servicing and knowledge of machines is impressive in itself and Brian's joy on seeing such a machine was obvious.
By way of a one to one lesson, Christine took me through the absolute basics of sewing from how to thread "Sylvia" to stitching in various forms. She has also guided me in the best threads and fabrics to use to get the best from this older machine.
Christine's knowledge and genuine passion of fabrics and sewing is infectious and her patience with me as the beginner has set me up to find joy in using this lovely instrument.
Thank you Brian and Christine.

Having bought a vintage semi-industrial Viking Husqvarna sewing machine to aid me in my leather craft hobby I decided I should get some lessons on how to use it properly. The girl I bought the machine from told me Colour and Cloth had taught her, so I thought I would give it a go. I was a little nervous, as a man, joining a sewing class, but loved every minute of the beginners course. Christine is a great teacher, makes you feel at ease and happily assists you when you need help. She is so passionate about what she does and clearly loves watching people develop a love for creating their own clothes from scratch. I enrolled thinking I'd learn a few basic skills to use my sewing machine, but left with a beautiful me-made Harris Tweed pullover coat, and a few new friends!

Highly recommend the overlocker course. Great tuition, everyone learns regardless of skill level. Learned lots of better ways to use my machine. I realised some bad habits I had and learned how to correct them which was really useful. My stitching is much better now. Fun class and a lovely group.
Christine is an excellent teacher and very thorough. Christine makes sure everyone understands and checks everyone one by one as we worked.
Looking forward to future courses.

Can't wait to start my mixed level sessions next week.

Absolutely loved learning to sew with Christine. She's so patient and clear, and helps each student develope their own style.
I took the beginners' course and the intermediate course and went from knowing literally nothing about sewing to being able to make my own clothes, even changing patterns to suit my shape and look.
If you're thinking about learning to sew, I say definitely go for it. And Christine's course at Colour and Cloth is a great place to start.

Dear Christine, can not thank you enough for your professional sewing course for men. I wasn't convinced that I could do it but you made it so welcoming and focused on the objective. I was immediately settled to the task of understanding my vintage sewing machine it made me so happy. As a beginner to sewing your tutoring skills and patience have help me turn my fashion ideas into reality. Thanks Christine.

Christine is a remarkable teacher - in 7 weeks she transformed a class of absolute beginners into sewists each of whom had made a wearable garment. And it was all fun. I loved it all and I’m looking forward to signing up for intermediate classes.

After an initial glitch…I left my beloved Juki sewing machine in with Brian & Christine to be repaired and serviced. I had little expectation that I’d get a working machine back.
I’d tried many places made several calls and got quotes but repair cost plus carriage made the whole thing well outside my budget.
I explained what I thought the problem was to Brian who agreed to check the machine, sort what was needed and if parts were required he was advise before he purchased or did further work. I had estimated a replacement part was £150-£200 following the calls I’d made previously.
In less than 24 hours I was contacted to advise my machine was ready for collection. I received a full breakdown of what was found to be defective, how it was repaired and shown the repaired element.
Brian was extremely knowledgeable, advised how the machine stitching was checked pre and post repair and the test cloth was retained under the presser foot for me to examine.
I’d recommend anyone to use this service, it’s professional, well priced, and personable. At no time did I feel I was going to get a bill that was beyond my expectations. For me that is invaluable.
I have several sewing machines and it’s my intention to get each serviced, including my vintage ones. There’s been no one convenient and in my opinion sufficiently skilled in repair to undertake sewing machine repair locally for a long time unless you personally know an individual who works at home and doesn’t advertise!.
Having found Colour and Cloth I will be more than happy to both use and promote the business, I feel my machines are in safe hands and there’s a business protecting my asset until it’s returned to me. Thanks Brian & Christine you are now on speed dial in case of emergency

Left my sewing machine and overlocker in with Brian and Christine for a service. Neither machine had been serviced in years. Brian took them apart and cleaned and adjusted every wee cog and Christine made sure that every stich was perfect before I got them back. They did a great job, both machines are running like new.

Christine is an excellent teacher. I enjoyed my first block of classes so much that I am just about to start a second intermediate class. Christine is really good at explaining things and makes simple what can appear as very complex on a pattern. She is generous in sharing her knowledge and lots of hints and tips from her extensive experience. The classes are great fun, informal and a wonderful way to improve sewing skills (or learn as a beginner).

I recently completed an Advanced Course with Christine and loved it so much that I've enrolled to start another course this January 22.
For my piece to work on during the class, I chose a jacket with over 50 individual pieces which I am still slowly completing. During the classes Christine was extremely attentive and willingly shared her knowledge. I not only leant how to properly fit clothing to myself but I also acquired new sewing skills and understood the importance of patience when making tailored clothing.
Another positive of the class was that whenever another student was being given tips, everyone was able to listen and benefit. So although I was only sewing one jacket, I obtained knowledge in relation to other garments as well.

I had a one to one sewing lesson with Christine just before Christmas 2021 and it was amazing! We covered so much in such a short period of time and she gave me confidence to go away and develop my skills on my own. She was so warm and welcoming! Can't recommend her highly enough!

I had an amazing time at Christine's beginners sewing class. She is an amazing teacher and has taught me so much in such a short space of time. Extremely insightful and patient and made every class so enjoyable! I am so grateful for my new skill and excited to continue making and learning. Looking forward to getting back in the studio for the next round.

Thank you Christine at Colour and Cloth for the professional, relaxed and creatively intuitive sewing classes you taught us. The sewing skills I've learnt as a man really helped me in making my own motorhome curtains and seat covers. FABULOUS!!! :-)
The way you patiently, calmly and professionally handled us learning sewing students is 100% amazing. Your creative ideas and suggestions go far beyond my own, so I was able to actually make much better curtains, cushions and seat covers.
The other ladies in the sewing group class where excellent and made me feel relaxed as you did. So thank you! Christine for all your brilliant talents in teaching us all how to sew. I'll be back to enhance my skills.

Christine is a lovely woman and a fantastic teacher. Despite the pandemic, she did everything in her power to make sure we were still chugging along. She went above and beyond to make sure we finished our garments.
I have now made a lovely dress that is fitted well to me, and is exactly my style, despite never having sewn before in my life. I was literally taking the packaging off my sewing machine during my first class.
I have learned so much that I know I can take with me into future projects. This class has really accelerated my learning process and gotten me to a point where I feel comfortable tackling new projects. I’m excited to see what else I will make in the future. I am very grateful to Christine for all her hard work and all of the wisdom she has passed on from her years of experience!

Did the beginner's sewing class and I got everything I wanted from the class and more, including a pair of culottes that I made from scratch. Highly, highly recommend.

I cannot recommend Christine as a teacher highly enough, I had a series of one to one lessons with her. She has a fantastic way of explaining the hows and whys of different techniques which I found incredibly helpful. I was very much a novice sewer, she taught me such a range of techniques and with such patience that I have since made several things both from scratch and via upcycling existing things and am completely hooked!

If you want to learn or improve your sewing Christine is the lady you need. Despite sewing for over 40 years i learnt a lot of finer details from Christine. Brilliant teacher.

I have taken 2 sets of classes with Christine. I absolutely loved learning, not something I say often! Christine takes the time with everyone to ensure that we all understand the lessons she is teaching. An incredible woman, not only did learning to sew improve my mental health, save money and inspire me, I also met a wonderful mentor and very special person in Christine x

Christine is a fantastic teacher. I felt completely at ease learning the basics of how to use a sewing machine. Even though I learned in a group setting, I feel as if I had constant individual support as Christine made sure everyone understood the principles before moving on. I feel confident sewing at home but I do hope to try a next stage course with Colour and Cloth some day soon.

Went from being totally clueless to making a dress within just a few weeks. The beginners lessons taught everything from learning how to sew a seam to pattern cutting. A relaxed environment and Christine was a great teacher with a whole breadth of knowledge on all things sewing that you probably wouldn't find with anyone else. Would highly recommend to anyone looking to invest some time to gain knowledge and confidence in a skill that is tricky to get the hang of without a little guidance!
Worth it 100%

I have just finished Christine's beginners class and had an amazing time. So happy with my first top and looking forward to making more and doing the intermediate class. Thanks so much for all your help.

I attended the intermediate workshop Jan - Feb & learnt so much - got my confidence back again! Then the overlocker course - great! I really enjoyed the classes and learning from Christine’s creativity! She seems to have solutions for everything & can see well outside the box!
Today I completed a lockdown project of toddler dungarees taking from Christine the ideas of upcycling! These dungarees stemmed from my son’s jeans that were heading for the dump! I can’t wait to see them on my grandson!
Thanks Christine for giving me the inspiration. I’m looking forward to attending another course, perhaps in the autumn.

Can't recommend Christine's classes enough. Before I started I couldn't thread my machine. Now I've made numerous items of clothing.
Also learnt about fabrics and how to work with differnt fabrics.

I did the Beginners' Class with Christine earlier this year and I cannot recommend highly enough. The pace was perfect, there was ample personal attention and all done with great grace and good humour. Can't wait to start my Covid-delayed Intermediate class in September, Niamh
