S. W.I'm an American visiting Britain and needed to get from York to Whitby, and wanted to do some sightseeing along the way. Andy from Sure Travel and I had discussed an itinerary in advance, and he added some suggestions that worked out quite well.
He picked me up at 9 am in York, then we drove by Yorkshire Lavender before they opened so I could get some photos of the fields and the views. We arrived at Castle Howard around 10 am, so I explored the gardens en route to the house (which opens at 10:30 am). The gardens are spectacular, providing contrasts in colors and styles.
The house was fine, but my interest in rooms stuffed with old furniture ran out about 3 rooms before the end of the self-paced tour route. They did a good job of providing docents in most of the main rooms who could explain the history of the room, the art and the furnishings.
I was done by about 12:30 pm (in the meantime, Andy had walked around the entire perimeter of the estate!), so we drove to Pickering where I'd hoped to have lunch. Unfortunately, the place I'd chosen wasn't at all what I'd expected from on-line photos, and I wasn't all that hungry, so we moved on after a couple of quick photos of the castle walls.
We next went to Cawthorn Roman Camp for the 1 mile easy trail to see the 3(?) rectangular enclosure mounds (and a spectacular view). Followed by another quick stop to see what 'might' be a Roman road across the moors (Wheeldale Roman Road). (If not Roman, certainly old!)
We drove through Goathland and then at Andy's suggestion we detoured to the Hole of Horcum for more great views. We drove to Whitby via Robin Hood's Bay, so I could get an idea if I could walk there from Whitby (my conclusion was 'no'... I could walk TO there, but would never make it back up the hill!). It's awfully cute, though and would be worth visiting.
We arrived in Whitby just before 5 pm, exactly as planned. Andy was very accommodating throughout the day (had even brought water for us both since the weather's been so hot, although Wednesday was actually not boiling). He accompanied me on the walk to the Roman camp, offered several other suggestions of places for walks (which I decided against) and was an interesting traveling companion for the day.
I'd highly recommend his services either for more conventional transfers or for this type of touring. He grew up in Yorkshire, so could tell stories of his dad taking him around to various sites (like the Hole of Horcum).
