Reviews of Culloden Battlefield and Visitor Centre
It is not a type of place I had expected to visit as history never particularly interested me.
However, I found it to be interesting and particularly liked the theatre where you could simultaneously see scenes of battle on three walls around you. Not for the faint-hearted or younger visitors.
I didn't stray far from the Centre and didn't go around the battlefield due to the state of my legs.
The place did, however, have views of interest to me (other than that of myself, clearly having fun).
The last photo is of a building where there is a telescope 🔭, which may possibly not be visible by the public. The building is close to the Highland coos.
The visitor's center was very informative, and well maintained. The National Trust of Scotland operates the facility and grounds, and they have done a great work here at Culloden! The battle field has many pathways and plaques describing the events of that day. Overall this was an excellent experience. We spent 4 hours exploring the visitors center and grounds. As we drove away, I looked back over the moor and couldn't help but feel reverence and sadness for the inhabitants of the highlands. This battle essentially marked the beginning of the end for the clan culture and lifestyle. I would recommend visiting the Culloden battlefieldto anyone. It might not be fun for little children though. Also, be sure dress appropriately for the Scotland weather. Thanks for reading.
What a historical visit. The museum is great to understand details of the battle. Take in the guided explanation of the encounter. Walking the battlefield was the most somber and reverent experience I’ve ever had.
Best to visit the place with a guided tour, otherwise it's just a field with a cottage on it. The walk around the field is free. To get into the museum must pay a fee.
We took a tour with an archeologist which was very interesting.
Highly recommended, my first visit-why did I leave it so long?!
Would recommend the battlefield tour, Andy was very knowledgeable and was excellent with detailing the landmarks & history of the site.
Nice visitor centre & plenty of goods available in the shop.
Walked around the battlefield. Had interesting information points on the walk. Unfortunately, the exhibition centre had already closed when we came by at 4pm and the cafe wasn’t serving hot food due to an issue with the kitchen. Well worth a visit. We used bus number 27 to get here from Inverness town centre.
I had wanted to visit Culloden for quite a while and wasn't disappointed. The visitor centre is very informative and as you walk around the battlefield you really get get a sense of what it must have been like.
Even though it was rebuilt is looks authentic... great place to learn about the last stand of the Jacobites. I didn't have time to visit the visitor center but heard it was great.
Fantastic place to visit. Took the battlefield tour which was very informative. The battlefield centre gives you loads more background and plenty of historical memorabilia to look at and even more interactive events. Cafe is good. Great bowl of soup and pot of tea.
The battlefield itself is well laid out and gives a clear delineation of the positions of the two armies and what actually happened. Thoroughly worthwhile
One of the best museum I have done: detailed text understandable by everyone, interactive audio, immersive room, experts guides with live presentations, audio guide. I enjoyed following guides with their 30min resume tour with anecdotes! Thank you guys please do continue your work 👍💪🙌
I forgot to mentioned: it is truly interesting to visit, even if you’re not really into historical topics.
Definitely a must visit place when you're visiting Scotland.
Great place to visit and learn. The Scottish people were oppressed by the British in some of the most severe ways.
Very good place to visit. Our tour quite Alexander was very informative. The centre as a whole is very well put together
Nice paths and concise, clear information boards. The visitors centre has a cafe which had a great coffee cake and an alright scone but we were disappointed that they were nearly sold out of cakes and lunch items at 2.30pm. They also have a shop in the visitors centre as well as a museum.
Loved the history of this place. They also had toilets and a cafe.
This is a very interesting place and the museum is very good. I would recommend the battlefield tour.
Windswept and desolate place(the weather was not kind on the day). Gavin the guide was great.
Even though it was raining slightly we had a great time
Excellent modern museum, cafe and gift shop but the friendly and knowledgeable tour guides make understanding the battle so much easier and the tours are included in the admission price. Good quality food and drink available in the warm and comfortable cafe. Well worth a visit.
Not the war between Scotland and England but rather catholic king and protestant king. Not a victory the English are proud of, due to the Butcher of Cumberland.
Historical site but not really much to see if you are not deeply interested in Scottish history. Cafe with only one way plastic tableware.
Moving to walk the battlefield. Good guided discussion inside center. Nice gift shop.
Very interesting learned a lot, Gavin was a phenomenal tour guide!
calm and peaceful walk to do with family,
Very interesting to be able to visualize the battleground. The visitor center is very informative.
Great visit. Learned a lot about history of the battle. Beautiful spot
Just heart warming we have been before but visits are always nice. Xx
Very well done museum, and great tour guides who paint a picture of the time leading up to the battle, during, and after.
Wonderful place to visit, lots of things to do. Great guided tours of the battlefield. Fantastic day out, highly recommend.
A very nice effort from Scotland trust. Well done. Do not miss it
No hot food today. Enjoyed the walk around the battlefield.
Great experience with great guide who bought the site to life
It just really wasn’t for me. It’s a beautiful walk, but it really lacks engagement for it being a battleground
A windy walk on the morning we went, but very invigorating and educational.
Good for a half day trip. Lots to see and a good visitor centre with cafe shop and museum
Not enough words, it's atmospheric, yet tangible worth a visit
So much history here- get a guided tour if you can so you can truly picture the battle.
Great Place to Visit
Excellent. Well worth a visit.
Busy but well worth the visit.
A must when in the area. Cafe and toilets are free to enter as is the car park
With one word Impressive

Interesting place a lot of history
Great history!
We just took in the battlefield and didn't bother with the centre
Really informative and interesting

Nice museum with some really good guided tours, especially from the Battlefield (you can also visit it without admission). However, the café closes at around 3pm, which is really borderline in bad or cold weather.

Came here around 10 am and wow, was it an experience. I did not go for the guided tour - but I could tell that the guide was very informative and even answered questions by curious tourists as I walked by on the field. This place offers a great wealth of information about the Jacobite uprising into power and the Battle of Culloden. There are also exhibits that are very engaging that I didn’t check out as I did not have the time but you definitely should check it out if you intend to spend quite a time here!
I only walked the battlefield. It was very interesting. There are some tombstones along the way. It’s a pretty large field. There’s a museum inside but you have to pay to get in.
Went here early in the morning and it was already very full. We only visited the battlefield and did not do a tour. We had our toddler with us and he enjoyed running around.
It feels very cool to be on a field with so much history literally seeping into it. A fierce battle so many years ago.
Loved visiting this place
Wow what an eye opener it is free for national trust members and you got a free tour which runs every hour as it gives you abit more history. Highly recommend for true Scottish history you can walk around the of the battlefield but stick to gravel paths as to this day they are not sure where ALL the graves are. Lovely restaurant and a huge collection of items collected from the battlefield
This is our second visit and it was just as good this time and interesting. We had the good fortune to arrive when a talk about the stone was being given and that was very interesting. The museum was brilliant full of interesting items and artifacts and the immersive interactive displays etc made it even better . It was good value to enter too. We did walk the field which we have done previously but the weather and time constraints for our bus back to Inverness meant we didn't get as much covered as we did before however we found it as moving and interesting as before . Vey much with a visit but please remember the Fraser stone is a grave marker NOT a tourist spot for selfies or Outlander fan fawning /acting up around. This area is a massive war grave treat it with respect . We will return again. Thanks for an interesting day. Can't add pics as not allowed photography in the museum. The cafe and gift shop were lovely
I’ve only ever read about Culloden and what occurred there, but seeing the field was an entirely different experience. The museum itself has so much information, with the events leading up to and after the battle separated Left/Right by Government/Jacobite, but if you are visiting I highly recommend getting the guided tour. There were so many misconceptions I had going in that i now know weren’t correct, just from my guide’s knowledge alone. I’d mention one thing and she instantly knew what I was discussing and corrected my understanding. An amazing experience, and I will take this history back to the US and tell its story for the next generation.
This place has such a rich history. And a sad story that is well told. I enjoyed the private tour, well worth the money.
We spent longer than expected at this historic site and would recommend paying to experience the museum and guided tour. Both were very informative and corrected many misconceptions we had about the events surrounding the battle. A big shout out to Gavin for his brilliant tour and Scott for his helpful explanations in the museum. And also not to forget the re-enactment of how Jacobites post- Culloden were allotted their punishment (or not!) - if you are shy make sure you don’t pick token 20 or 14.
Lucien was a fabulous tour guide. In the job less than four weeks, he was knowledgeable, well spoken, considerate of such a large party and showed a great sense of humour. He made the visit extra special.
A very solemn place filled with history. It was very interesting. I wish I had more time to look around while we were there.
Great place of a significant history. Get a map and walk the whole thing! Pay your respects to the fallen and stick to the paths!
You don't have to pay to see the moor. You only have to pay to see the exhibition inside.
Really recommend pre-booking the guided tour of the battlefield. Our guide Gavin was great -- really knowledgable about the battle as well as the broader historical context and a very clear communicator.
Was cool to visit, definitely recommend doing a tour. Our guide relayed all kinds of info we would not have got if we had done it on our own. Then go through the museum some pretty cool stuff to see and read about. We enjoyed it. Make reservations for the tour if do it.
Great museum collection, fantastic place
Coach trip first time there the driver told us the story of the moor that no birds fly there and he was right never seen any birds
A wonderfully atmospheric interpretation of the Battle, it's causes and consequences.
Interesting and informative, we took advantage of the fantastic tours and we were entertained by guide Jim who is quite a tall fella and he knew his history. Highly recommended, this was our third visit and we shall visit again in a few years
Brilliant! So much information. The volunteer who demonstrated kilt wearing was fascinating and the costumed soldiers were a wealth of knowledge.
Amazing and insightful experience. I spend many hours there walking through the visitor center and the battlefield. Great and moving tribute to the Jacobites who fell.
Great gift shop that pays attention to sustainability - recycled fabrics, plastic bags etc. (would have loved if they also had scarfs made by recycled wool but maybe they’ll have that in the future).
Easy and cheap to get there by bus.
eh. I was cold. our guide was bored. I needed a MAP of what was going on. Just could have been better. Visitors center is not cheap. really nice staff.
The museum was fascinating, engaging, and informative. The paths in the museum having the government perspective on one side and the Jacobite perspective on the other was brilliant. I had a great time.
Interesting historical location. Highly recommend the guided walking tour about 40 min.
Atmospheric well laid out battle field. Brilliant museum and battle experience giving both sides of the story. Dog friendly except for museum. Friendly and welcoming staff.
A must visit place to see history come alive. The guides do a fantastic job to providing context.
It is impressive to learn from the history of all that has happened here. The Battle of Culloden, fought in 1746 near Inverness, Scotland, was the final clash of the Jacobite Rising. The British government forces, led by the Duke of Cumberland, decisively defeated the Jacobite army led by Charles Edward Stuart ("Bonnie Prince Charlie"). It marked the end of the Jacobite rebellion and had significant cultural and political consequences.
Great history and excellent tour.
Excellent use of audio-visual elements in the exhibits. The guided tour was high quality and well worth the extra £2
Fantastic
Excellent museum.
Great explanation of the battle and events leading up to it. Interesting how they split it up to show both sides. I learned a lot.
Lovely place to visit. Our tour guide Chloe was brilliant. So enthusiastic and knowledgeable
Nice place to wander around
Their cafe is good as well
Very expensive gift shop
A must see. Also, take an official tour . Well worth the cash
Good place ti visit if you are interested of scottish history
So much history. Great tour guide
Great Scotland history spot, Jacobite vs English government.
Lots to do. Very interactive exhibition
Recommend
Absolutely 1st class, well presented
Good place for visit in soctland
During our trip through Scotland, this place was a MUST for me, as an Outlander fan interested in Scottish history.
The Fraser gravestone was unfortunately fenced off at the time, but it was still great to see it.
And the entire area had something magical about it.
The paths are a bit muddy when it rains, but from what I understand the goal is to restore this area to how it was back then anyway.
I can only recommend a trip there.
I hope my review was helpful.
If you are interested in history, it is a place worth knowing. The historic site is very well maintained and the visitor center is amazing. Not only does it contain many historical artifacts, but the volunteers are very knowledgeable, extra friendly, and able to connect with the audience, which is very important. Don't forget to stop by the gift shop where the proceeds go to benefit, to continue caring for historical monuments, or the coffee which is very delicious and at an affordable price. You can go and return by bus from the center, it is very easy to get there. If you want to travel outside, be prepared for the Scottish weather. Don't miss it!
The guided tour was very informative.
Our guide led us through the battlefield, while detailing the information about the events that occurred on that tragic April 16, 1746.
In the middle of a gray day with intermittent drizzle, it was not difficult to "feel" all the drama of the brutal battle that took place there...
The visit to the museum completed the information with the exhibits and audiovisuals...
I enjoyed the experience that I consider culturally enriching...
Very impressive. The parking lot right at the beginning is free. You have to pay down at the museum. Unfortunately there is no signage for the remaining walks that you can still do to or from (Prisonars Stone etc.)
Very informative museum that provides a comprehensive and varied look at the important Battle of Culloden (1746), including its history and consequences. You can easily imagine yourself in the time depicted. There are also entertaining ideas about the situation of soldiers at the time. After visiting the museum, you can go to the battlefield to see the area where the battle took place; A guided tour is also offered.
Insider tip: you can see real Scottish highland cattle here, which you can hardly find anywhere else!
A unique experience if you know what happened there
A very modern and lavishly designed museum in which history comes to life. The entrance fee is definitely worth it. I recommend booking the guided tour of the field. My guide was called Lucien. He conveyed a lot of background information very clearly and with a lot of passion, despite a strong wind that almost blew him over. I could see the battle in my mind's eye. Thank you for these impressive insights into the tragic history of the Jacobites. A must when in Inverness.
stunning! Don't miss! Tells one of the most fascinating stories in Scottish history
The museum is rich in knowledge and the guides are charming!
There are discounts for students
Nice to have seen. Didn't look inside. Tickets are not required for outside, but for inside you do. Inside you can have a drink and there are toilets and a shop for souvenirs.
It’s a must see. I recommend taking your time and actually walking through the whole field, seeing the different clans memorial plaques, taking in this tragic historic place.
A place steeped in history, a very good museum to start with and get in the mood, before continuing with our guide who immersed us in history!
This tour, museum and memorial is not to be missed, whether you’re a longtime Scottish history buff, an Outlander fan or just a garden variety tourist. This is the final resting place of ~1,500 Jacobite and 50 Government soldiers who fought and died here in 1746. The museum is wonderfully conceived and executed, you can explore the government or rebel view of the events leading up to the conflict throughout the museum, and then walk the lines of each. The guided tour of the battlefield is about 45 minutes. Regardless of whose “side” you are on, it all feels tragic and sad.
Absolutely Amazing!! The museum is nicely set up to take a visitor from start to finish in the battle. They also have a really cool digital live action map of the battle in play. The battle field itself is nicely maintained and the staff is super helpful.
Not an outlander fan, I just went because I like history. Our guide (Iona) was superb, they knew a whole lot about the place and waited for me and my elderly mother in each part of the tour. The museum is gorgeous if you're into antiques, and there were explanations on the warfare methods of the armies and the implications they had. It is worth well over twice the price they charge: I'd recommend seizing up the opportunity. When my mother felt she couldn't walk anymore (the path isn't particularly difficult but it is obviously uneven) the staff gave us a wheelchair and we managed to visit the whole place. They even had ramps to get her to the roof to take pictures and look at the battlefield and some coos! Don't miss this if you're in Inverness.
We had a fantastic and very informative visit to Culloden Battlefield. We started off in the visitor center, looking through the information displayed. We then watched a display of the weapons that were used in the battle. We had some very nice soup in the cafe, and then we went on the Battlefield Tour, which lasted 45 minutes and was totally fascinating. It's well worth a visit.
Great visitors centre, staff are awesome very knowledgeable. Gift shop when you come in and tearoom with very helpful staff. Tea and cake thank you very good. Walk along the battlefield was good
I found the museum disappointing and overpriced. Smaller museums nearby do a better job at telling a story (for other history) logically for half the price or less. Did not follow the rationale for having the government story and the Jacobite story in parallel along both walls. What am I supposed to do? Read one, walk back, then read the other? Alternate randomly? Very text dense which also seems misguided for such a busy centre. The artefacts were cool but I found the layout was not logical. I liked the visual display of Culloden battle right at the end. Could very well have skipped the museum.
Recommend the paid tour. Our guide James was great and full of info
Great experience and guide was very knowledgeable, great place to go around
Have visited this place often over the years, and it never fails to make an impression on me.
Well worth a visit, it's National Trust
