Really personal and responsive - special credit to Helene who worked with me over years to get our holiday sorted thanks to Covid (we originally booked a different destination). They clearly know what works for families and we found the itinerary really well judged. I also think their pricing is fair. I would use them again without hesitation.
R. R.I cannot speak highly enough about Stubborn Mule travel. Everything was smoothly organised and we didn’t have to worry about a thing. Our visit to Costa Rica with a 14yo was amazing. Always something to look forward to but enough downtime that it felt relaxing. The itinerary was perfect for us. Highlights were tubing on the bluest river we had ever seen, rafting, seeing turtles lay eggs, monkeys, sloths and all manner of frog, bird, insect and lizard, beautiful scenery, volcanoes and really great sushi! Oh and the Costa Rican people are unfailingly kind and have a great teasing sense of humour too! Thanks Kelly and the team for making our tour one of the best holidays ever.

B. L.Just returned from an amazing family holiday to Thailand arranged through Stubborn Mule Travel. We did a 3 centre trip with lots of activities and travel. All the hotels, activities and travel were superb and the guides and transfers were really high quality. However the best thing about Stubborn Mule Travel is the care they take and their ability to really understand the type of holiday you want. Claire went to endless effort to recommend and source to get exactly the holiday we wanted. Claire and Carolyn's local knowledge of the area was fabulous and it was such a pleasure dealing with them. Both times we have had the most amazing family holidays with our 2 daughters (aged 13 and 15). Kelly at Stubborn Mule has a wealth of first hand knowledge of these countries and put together brilliant itineraries for us - a great mix of sightseeing, relaxing by the pool/beach time, activities such a zip lining or cycling, going to elephant sanctuaries and cooking lessons. We have only been home a week from Vietnam and are already trying to decide where our next Stubborn Mule adventure should be!

S. W.Amazing trip to Greece for 16 year old daughter and mum. From the moment we enquired to arriving home we were so well looked after and yet still felt like independent travellers. Helene and the team listened to our wishes for a mother, daughter post GCSEs holiday, exploring Greek Gods and Naxos Island.
We snorkelled, swam, learned to cook Greek food, fell in love with Naxos and Athens, kayaked and were thoroughly spoiled by the kindness of the locals in Athens and Naxos.
Our local guide Christina was just so supportive (via messaging) and took all the strain of co-ordinating our itinerary.
We were both left to enjoy Greece and the experiences we wanted to. It really was a perfect trip.

K. M.We have just returned from a wonderful trip to Sri Lanka and Mumbai in January 2019 with your 3 year old daughter which had been expertly organised by Emily. I had become overwhelmed trying to arrange it myself and Emily took all the stress away, she listened to what we wanted and adapted the trip accordingly. She also made sure that every where we stayed and all activities were suitable for our daughter as well as us. Our highlight was definitely afternoon tea with views of the Knuckles Mountains.

The safari in Tanzania and relaxation in Zanzibar with a fascinating introduction to the people and culture was truly memorable. It was carefully matched with our interests and needs (from age 1 to over 60). R. B.Emily at Stubborn Mule put together an action packed 8 day family itinerary to Morocco that worked flawlessly. The kids loved the smells, sights and sounds as we went from the frantic souks to the peaceful mountains, taking in the desert and Atlantic coast in between. S. B.2020 Update!! I know this is a strange addition to the review I posted in 2019 .... but we were due to travel to Vietnam with Stubborn Mule in summer 2020. Obviously this year, it was not to be. I just wanted to say that this company has acted with total honesty and integrity throughout the process of getting flight refunds and returning deposits. Unlike other travel companies, they have responded to every email quickly, and answered every phone call. 2020 has been very tough on the travel industry - and I cannot praise Stubborn Mule highly enough, and I really look forward to travelling with them again when the world re-opens.
I literally cannot recommend Stubborn Mule highly enough! We spent 2 and half idyllic weeks in Bali with our 3 children (14, 12 and 10). Caroline was absolutely fantastic and arranged the most perfect itinerary - cycling, snorkelling, white water rafting, cooking lessons, tree top climbing .. while also getting the measure of my lazy family, and scheduling plenty of "pool loafing" too! Absolutely everything worked perfectly - so a big thank you to their partners in Bali for being so wonderful! Bali is such a beautiful island - but some areas are pretty over crowded with tourists and traffic jams - we didn't see any of that! All we saw were beautiful hotels, beautiful places and beautiful people (we also saw giant turtles swimming over the coral reef, monkeys galore, massages in beautiful spas, ate far too much delicious food .. even a small earthquake!) All the children loved it - Bali was the best holiday ever!

A. W.Thank you for an awesome two week trip to Namibia. We spent quite a bit of time planning what we wanted with Claire and Liddy and our itinerary went through a number of changes - thank you ladies for your patience!! We really valued the fact that Stubborn Mule could provide local knowledge and understood about travelling with children; what would and wouldn't work. The in country agent and car hire were great.
We had a stress free 2 weeks with a touch of adventure; some 4x4 driving, remote camping, lovely lodges, amazing wildlife, meals around campfires and in amazing restaurants.
We will definitely use Stubborn Mule again
J. B.We rarely book our holidays with travel agents or participate in 'package tours'. We quickly realized that it would be beneficial to use one for our trip to Tanzania, and Stubborn Mule ticked all of our boxes. Having a 7 year old, we realized that the standard tour itineraries provided by most agencies (with game drive after game drive) would not provide enough variety to keep our son entertained for a week. If he is miserable, we are all miserable. The itinerary suggested by Stubborn Mule provided a great balance of outdoor activities such as canoeing, cycling, hiking and tribal visits including archery to intersperse the game drives.
Emily was very prompt in replying to emails, and very thorough in providing options. She allayed our concerns and made adaptations to suit our preferences. The local partners in Tanzania were attentive and friendly, welcoming us on arrival and reconfirming our plans to ensure there were no surprises/omissions. Our guide/driver was very knowledgeable and kind, made safe driving decisions, yet was aggressive in nosing our safari vehicle in amongst the others for us to get the best photo angles. Our trip of a lifetime was perfect. We had a fabulous time and definitely recommend Stubborn Mule for family holidays.

S. B.I highly recommend Stubborn Mule. We used them for the absolute trip of a lifetime to Egypt. While I can imagine that we didn’t get rock bottom prices, we definitely got our money’s worth. The entire itinerary was perfectly tailored to our family, which was crucial for us, as we really wouldn’t have been able to enjoy one of the “standard” set tours with our child — it simply would have been way too much and too exhausting. Stubborn Mule’s trip was spot-on perfect — we got to see everything, but at a pace that we could enjoy, not be exhausted and grumpy during the trip. Our tour guide, Mohamed, was simply wonderful — he was not only patient and engaging with our daughter, he also came up with new games and activities for her. We all loved the food, and the activities were a real highlight — we all loved the donkey rides more than I would ever have expected. The travel specialist we worked with had been on the same trip with her family, so we really got first-hand insights on the locations and the trip; they were always friendly and easy to work with, even when we didn't know what we wanted to do. We truly had an amazing trip, and now that we're back, I'm already started to look through some of their other itineraries!

E. L.I've travelled with Stubborn Mule before and was really looking forward to our dream family trip to South Africa and Namibia this Easter. Sadly it wasn't meant to be, COVID-19 meant we couldn't travel. I've really struggled with getting refunded for flights (still no news) from a large agency and our travel insurance was hopeless despite buying an expensive policy. Stubborn Mule, however, has been fantastic. Providing really helpful advice from the moment it looked like our trip was in jeopardy and sorting everything out so quickly. I can't wait for the world to settle down so we can rebook with them.

The organisation and communication of the company was first rate and they produced a perfect itinerary for us. I’ve never been driven around a country before, usually doing this myself. All of the accommodation was outstanding, small boutique hotels which we would never have found ourselves on line. S. F.What an amazing family holiday. We have recently returned from travelling around Mexico and into Belize for 2 weeks with my daughters age 12 and 14. Stubborn Mule arranged a fantastic itinerary, visiting such beautiful places we would never have found. Everything was perfectly arranged to make our holiday so easy. We had such amazing experiences from swimming in Cenotes, to visiting pyramids, kayaking, paddle boarding and seeing such amazing wildlife. Thank-you Liddy and team a holiday we will never forget!
J. H.Emily organised a 7 night trip for us ( a couple and 7 year old girl) to Morrocco. We spent 2 nights in Ourigane, 2 nights in Atlas village (one in Imlil), 1 night in Agafey desert camp, 2 nights in Marrakesh. The trip was beyond our expectation. Two things that made us a definite "return customer" are (1) the local travel agency used by Stubborn Mule delivered authentic experience and top notch services (2) accommodations arranged by Stubborn are the best at a given price range. Anyone can book very expensive places themselves which often lack real local touch as you mix with the same crowd as in London in an exclusive compound. Only experienced agent like Stubborn Mule can offer authentic experience with a very reasonable price which is very difficult to replicate by DIY.
Our best meal was at the desert camp which was only opened very recently. Our best experience was 2 day trekking from ouirgane to Imlil, with a guide, a mule, and a mule rider/cook. After well paced 4 hour trekking in the morning (the guide offered local knowledge and helped us - first timer for trekking- keep a manageable speed), they cooked lunch for us at well chosen wild picnic spots: finely chopped Morrocco salad, cooked omelet tagine, fruits. My 7 year old daughter rode mule about 3/4 of the trekking trail and was very well looked after by the guide. Our best take-away from this trip is a cooking class at somebody's home in a Berber village, learning how to cook chicken tagine and brew local tea.
The only bad experience was a rip-off by a taxi driver in Marrakech where we did not use Stubborn Mule's service.
We are now looking to book our next trip with Stubborn Mule Travel and will recommend it to anyone who loves to immerse themselves in local culture at reasonable price.
N. M.Thanks for organising a fabulous family trip to Bali. We are a family of 5 age 14- 55 and wanted a holiday we could get involved with, not just lazing in the sun. Originally we were going to Sri Lanka but sadly with the terrorist attack at Easter the foreign office advised against going there. Stubborn Mule travel were so helpful, they offered a refund or switch to another holiday, recovered the cost of our flights.
So we went to Bali , this time everything went to plan, the standard of accommodation as we traveled got more and more impressive, nothing was too much trouble for our guide (he was great at timing visits away from the crowded tour buses). We did a lot of activities: white water rafting, tree top zip wires, cooking, cycling and walking and the companies that delivered these were all safe, well rehearsed local guides spoke English and were happy to chat about life in Bali. I loved the stay in the mountains in Munduk, our hotel rooms were almost like a tree house; so high up, a rice paddy outside the door and you could walk straight out to the clove and coffee filled hills. If you do the snorkelling trip be sure to wear a T-shirt in the water, you get 2 hours in the water around midday and we got sunburnt. We saw lots of wild life; the Mimpi hotel has monkeys, they were peering at us over the edge of the spa roof and then jumping in the creek, at the Santrian they left out fruit for the squirrels in the tree outside our window and we watched him chasing away the doves all afternoon, there are dogs everywhere lazily sleeping in the sun.
Stubborn Mule has been great and we don’t hesitate to recommend them.
A. G.Really excellent travel company. We have done a Tanzania trip (10 days plus travel) with 2 teenage children. The itinerary was very well thought through, the chosen accommodation was just right for us and the local guides, etc all very good. The costs were very reasonable too. We found customer service - answering our queries, guiding us on finding the right trip, etc - to be prompt, personal and well judged. I have no hesitation in recommending them for a family trip.

Lee put together our itinerary and was always on hand to make adjustments and change dates to incorporate other places and activities. They're all parents with young children and (to the best of my knowledge) they've all visited the countries and been through most of the itineraries, and this makes a massive difference. Lee talked us through all the details, gave us tips, checked up on us and gave us peace of mind. Plus she managed to sneak in some tickets to see Sri Lanka play South Africa in Dambulla.
Yes, there are things I'd probably change about our trip in hindsight (we might have skipped one of the temple trips as the kids struggled to take them all in), and yes, we paid a bit (maybe 5-10%?) more than what I budgeted when I was initially planning everything myself. But if you're thinking about a trip to SL with kids then you'll save yourself a load of time, hassle, worry and stress by giving them a call. Plus it'll feel like you've actually had a holiday. S.We have just spent three weeks in Sri Lanka, part organised by Stubborn Mule (myself and my teenage son). Their service was excellent - Charlotte listened well to our needs, offered us lots of useful advice and set us up with a flexible programme that suited us perfectly. We had the family holiday of a lifetime, a 2 week trip to Tanzania with our 3 boys (13,11,9). We had an amazing action packed itinerary created for us, incorporating activities that gave us a deeper insight into the country and it's people. It all went like clockwork, seamlessly from one adventure to another. Local guides were brilliant, hotels were fantastic, I couldn't have chosen our lodge in the Serengeti and hotel in Pongwe, Zanzibar better myself!
They are so knowledgeable, creating memorable and exciting experiences that you would not think of alone. We went on a walking safari, canoeing, cycling through banana plantations, lunch with local family, went hunting with Hadzabe tribe, eating the guinea fowl they caught, then teaching my children how to make fire and use bows and arrows, hiking with a Masai warrior, safari to Ngorogoro crater, beautiful Serengeti, lions, cheetahs, leopards, rhino, a kill by 3 lionesses and a poor gazelle, exploring the streets of Stonetown, Zanzibar and finished with the most idyllic beach and hotel in Pongwe, Zanzibar. WOW.

N. W.Just back from an amazing trip with our family to Egypt. Liddy & team put together a great itinerary which was a perfect mix of travel, culture, new experiences, fun & relaxation. Our guide Khaled was fantastic - he made the whole trip run smoothly whilst giving us a great insight into modern Egyptian life as well as that of the Ancient Egyptians.
We travelled independently a lot pre-kids but have definitely found that, with limited time & slightly more demands for comfort & safety, having a tailor-made tour works perfectly, and we experienced things we'd never have done on our own! It was also very welcome having their support when needed - our hotel in Luxor turned out to be less than ideal, but within a couple of hours we had been given a tour of an alternative venue & were moved across with minimum fuss. Again, had we been travelling solo that would have been a whole different experience!

Claire at Stubborn Mule Travel organised a great family holiday with teenagers to Vietnam. Vietnam is a fantastic country to visit with wonderful Karst scenery, beaches, bustling cities, and colourful markets. During our stay we cooked crickets, learnt how to make spring rolls, rode a water buffalo, cycled along rural lanes, reef snorkelling, overnight on a train, and visited majestic. Personable staff and friendly. Happy to answer any queries. Claire had visited the destination previously so was able to provide first hand knowledge.
