Reviews of Salter's Steamers Ltd
J. W.
Enjoyed a really special 2.5 hour cruise on the good ship Leila for our 45th wedding anniversary! Our anticipated public cruise became a private cruise with Skipper Alan who shared his knowledge and love of both the river and the local area freely and with humour.
This added enormously to our enjoyment as did the fact that we spent most of the time upstream of Folly Bridge rather than downstream and we selected the cruise on that basis given the number of trips we have had downstream.
The gourmet picnic lunch was of excellent quality & very tasty. Nice also to be able to choose the filling for the "sandwich" which turned out to be a chunky & well filled baguette!
Highly recommended!

Had a fabulous time on the Alice in Wonderland boat trip. We was well looked after by Will who went above and beyond for us all, so kind and friendly. Very reasonable prices. Lovely day out seeing all the scenery in Oxford in the sunshine

Very accomodating guys as we arrived last minute. We took the short 40 minute journey and it was just right for our young son. Interesting commentary and a nice relaxing round trip. The boat was covered as well, so no worries about the train, or being day in the bright sun.
Could do with some comfier seats - but that's boats for you!

Agree with other reviews in that the tour itself is fairly worthless. It’s 20 min out, 20 min back. Tour guides provide information, but only for the first half, since it’s the same on the way back. The staff was awesome, but the tour is not worth it.

I hired a self-drive boat on a whim from Salter Steamers after lunch at the Head of the River pub at Folly Bridge. 2 hours on the Thames on my own- wonderful and peaceful. The young woman who set me up was professional and had all of the paperwork ready. The boat worked great. Ran into a minor problem in the Osney lock in trying to restart it, but the Salter attendant had shown me that the red battery lever sometimes gets kicked, and yep, I had done that. After putting it back in place all was good.
Can't wait to get back to Oxford and drive on the river again.

We used this company for our wedding reception. We had a fabulous evening sailing from Windsor. The company provided a wonderful buffet, with lots of vegetarian options for our many veggie guests as requested and a great disco.
All the staff were friendly and helpful. Making our event very special.
The most magical moment was the escort of swans as we sailed back in to Windsor.

Great day out to Abingdon and back. Really informative skipper pointing out places of interest along the way. Highly recommended.

Really helpful and accommodating company throughout. Taylor was a real star on the day. The whole experience was worth the journey (we live 2 hours away) and I would certainly come back again.

£20 well spent. Friendly staff with full knowledge of the river. Kids absolutely loved it. Scenery was amazing.

Slightly expensive to hire a diesel boat for an hour but still great fun. I enjoyed every part of it apart from the fairly large spider which tagged along for the ride!

Amazing afternoon down the river. Staff were lovely. All guests had a great time
M. T.
Short boat trip, corny, patronising jokes from the 'skipper' as well as some local knowledge. Better with no commentary. Beautiful scenery.

Wonderful trip for 2 hours and half in the River Thames, many thanks to our guide TOM.
K. W.
Gentle two and a half hour cruise on a small replica Edwardian cruiser steered by our guide Arthur. This took us to Port Meadow and then back to the college boat houses at a leisurely speed. It is definitely a "chill" experience, not one for thrill seekers and all the more enjoyable for that. We took the option of the picnic lunch, which is provided in a traditional individual picnic hamper and contains hand made sandwiches, a cake, crisps, fruit and a drink. Or you could bring your own picnic - but nicer to have someone do all the work for you! A peaceful way to pass a couple of hours and see bits of Oxford that you won't see otherwise all the time looking out for locations where Morse and Endeavour were filmed
M. B.
Lovely 40 minute trip down the river, £8 for adults. Nice and relaxing boat trip.
D. L.
Very friendly staff, good prices and lots of fun
R. C.
Good value for money, friendly staff perfect way to spend 40.minutes on a boat on the Thames in the sunshine

I would definitely recommend. We hired a boat for 6, for a 1 hour tour of the Thames in Oxford. We were given very specific instructions on safety features, how to handle and manoeuvre the boat, the speed we should go at and respecting others on the river. We had an excellent hour and would definitely do again
S. D.
Very pleasant, helpful crew ensured that my son and daughter-in-laws wedding reception went without a hitch. A lovely cruise through the beautiful Oxfordshire countryside rounded off a wonderful day.

A great choice for a day out! We rented a 8 person capacity boat for 3hrs of cruising the Thames and it was brilliant! The friendly and helpful staff made the experience even better!

Salters Steamers transferred us from Folly Bridge to The Perch as part of our wedding. The staff were all great, easy to communicate with in the lead up and put on a lovely champagne reception. Highly recommended!
G. D.
Rented a punt on the recommendation of the staff. It was challenging, but good fun, if you don't mind making a spectacle of yourself. Can also hire a variety of other, less challenging g crafts to take for a lovely day or hour on the river.
D.
Great little trip down the river, sit back and relax for 40 minutes with the sound of the water and lovely views of the wildlife.
Tom the guide was very friendly with loads of knowledge.
E. D.
Big wide open stretch of Isis (Thames) and the boats are comfy. Dreadful comms amongst the staff. We pitched up expecting a motorboat (phnar, phnar) but only found a bunch of punts (chortle) as the boats were stuck the day before by a lock fault.
Punting is tough. Watch a video before going.
Tip: Don't miss the left hand turn to double back up the Cherwell otherwise you'll end up at Magdellen Bridge sweating and knackered.
Anyway, a good day out.

We went on the first Monday of the school holidays and booked the last trip of the day. I thought the price was a little high for what you actually get, but as an experience for my three grandchildren it was brilliant. It was a glorious summers day and the duck's, geese and swans kept them entertained as did the rowers. Luckily there were no smokers on the trip as smoking is allowed and I think that is wrong. I have taken a star away because at the end of the 40 minute trip my posterior and back were feeling their age as the seating is very uncomfortable.

Flower Festival, good value day out for keen gardeners

We hired the boat for a party of friends and family for a 4 hour trip on the river starting from Marlow. Dealing with Salters was very easy and they were very accommodating with our plans. This is a great way to treat people to a beautiful afternoon on the Thames.

Tour guide / El captain was very good. Boat was comfortable, and I'd recommend this experience to anyone out in Oxford for the day.
S. S.
Fantastic experience! Great guys and lovely welcome. Casper our friendly driver of boat was fab, happy, chatty and good laugh. Would highly recommend a private boat trip, great for any celebration or get together.
A. N.
Good lads there. Had 3 boats all day and was epic.
S. P.
What a fantastic day! The boat was fantastic, the food was amazing and the crew where lovely. And my self and Charlie can't thank you enough for making our day that little bit extra special. Would highly recommend it to anyone wanting to make their special day that bit more memorable.
A. H.
Fun boat trips. Our guide was really entertaining.
I. T.
Well worth hiring a punt or motor boat from these guys, rates are reasonable and the guys give you a good idea for what routes are best for you. We hired a motor boat for a couple of hours and it cost £120, the deposit is cash only and around £150. It's first come first serve, so on a lovely sunny day it's worth getting down there early.
Z. T.
Took the river experience cruise as part of my exploration of Oxford. At only £8 for a 40 mins ride, this was quite a good deal! Guide was friendly, knowledgeable, and answered all my questions about the area.
The tour goes along the River Thames and passes the many boathouses along the riverbank, turning back at a lock near the isis tavern.
Highly recommend for anyone touring Oxford city as you get to see things you won't normally get to see on foot (unless you're prepared to walk >2 miles along the riverbank)
J. R.
Very good idea to spend hot summer day on the river trip with the picnic boxes delivered and the company man entertaining. There were sandwiches, cold drinks, bananas and cookies to celebrate our friend birthday.
A. W.
Really nice 2 1/2 hour cruise on the Thames. Also purchased the picnic which was really tasty.
N. H.
We've used these guys for our annual Christmas staff and clients party for the last three years and its a brilliant experience. Very accommodating and great value for money as Christmas parties go. Highly recommended!
R. A.
Last week I visited Oxford with family and decided to take a boat trip, this is a fabulous way to explore oxford, the staff made us feel welcome and took good care of us from the moment we stepped aboard. If you're visiting Oxford I would definitely recommend this as something to do whilst in the city.
J. W.
Short trip from Folly Bridge to Iffley Lock and back. Lovely way to see parts of Oxford you wouldn't normally see.
I. G. G.
Fantastic afternoon for my daughters hen party cream tea and proseco on board Leila. Thank you Salters and our lovely skipper for taking so much care of us. We will definitely do this again and bring the boys next time. Thank you.
M. A.
Just brilliant. I hired an entire boat for work and we had a wonderful afternoon. We were well looked after and I was very impressed by the price. I would highly recommend.

Lovely boat ride with my dad, only did the short one, but pleasant enough. The skipper was a bit of a character. Fair price.

Mixed feelings at the moment as the boat trip was great but bought a drink in the bar for £2 with my card the next morning I got a message from my bank saying they had resubmitted the payment for £4 not happy also I have had no reply to my email querying it! 🤬

(Translated) I didn't do a boat ride so I can't comment on that.
I highlight this place because it was where Lewis Carroll, together with the Liddel girls, rented the boats for their walks on the river, in one of which the story that would later become Alice in Wonderland began to take shape.
(Original)

(Translated) the area is very nice, but going by boat moving with the long pole is not easy at all, much better with oars or with a professional guide
(Original)
la zona è molto carina, ma andare in barca spostandosi con la lunga asta non è affatto facile, molto meglio con i remi oppure con un accompagnatore professionista
