A well-priced escorted tour of Switzerland with an excellent guide, Graham Carter. Hats off to Graham for his patience and cheerful leadership of our group of 36 with various levels of mobility and agility. A last minute change of hotel was a bit of a surprise and some of our group were disappointed with the substitution but we found it to be a nice tourist class 3 star with a good choice of buffet style meals. It needs to be remembered before you book that this is an active holiday. There are many train changes, steps and hills. Overall a good holiday but you need to be fairly agile to get the most out of the experience. Luckily we are!

recently returned from Bavaria all inclusive and the first thing I have to say is hats off to the tour manager MR Geoff Powis,he was amazing and extremely patient and polite with a large group of 42 pensioners.I dont really know what has happened to the GERMAN EFFICIENCY but we experienced so many delays and cancellations and Geoff dealt with them all.The Hotel was a good 3 star, with 3 star food, all very pleasant, good beer, although sometimes getting served was a bit of a challenge. The final delay caused us to miss our eurostar connection, but thanks to Rail Dicoveries they put us all in a 5 star hotel in Brussels with a dinner allowance and lunch next day all under the guidance of Geoff.I would recommend the holiday and the hotel, although remembering it is 3 star, but just take note, there is alot of traveling .All in all well done Rail Discoveries and extremely well done Geoff.Bernard and Chris Warner

Excellent trip Yorkshire by Steam, hotel was great, food was good, staff excellent, tour guide Angela was really good. Steam train rides were amazing. Whole trip was better than expected as previous read reviews were unfounded. Well worth a visit. Plenty of things to see and do, very well organised trip.

I've been on one rail holiday with them, to Switzerland, and found them to be an efficient company with pleasant staff. I was kept well informed. I have another holiday booked. They allowed me to change to a different holiday when my original one became difficult because of Covid. But a reminder of when the balance of my holiday money was due would have been helpful. Not to mention an app that actually works.

Seeing so many negative reviews of Rail Discoveries makes you wonder if we have been travelling with the same company for the past 7 years or so! Excelent holidays, good hotels, superb tour managers-what else could you ask for? However it pays to look closely at the brochure -if there are a lot of coach trips, then we usually do NOT book ( please note ,the guy who complained about the Scottish holiday with little train-travel-it's there in the itinerary). Having said that, we ARE travelling to Scotland for just such a holiday this autumn, and we know exactly what to expect, and nothing more. The train-travel to Scotland we treat as part of our rail holiday.
As for comments about the food in some hotels, we have been underwhelmed by some-and delighted with others. As someone said, if you want better food, spend more and go with sister company Great Rail-as we have done in the past, and will do again. And if you don't like a hotel( we had a ghastly one in America-now removed from the tour, thank heavens)-take your comments to the company. They do listen.
So please be assured, thousands of happy travellers book with rail Discoveries, and we have only met one couple out of hundreds we have travelled with who were not happy( with the food)-ALL the others on the tour were delighted with it! You can't please everyone.....

Having recently travelled with Rail Discoveries I was mostly impressed with the quality of the travel experience they offer. However the hotel they put us in for most of the trip was not at all acceptible on numerous counts. When one of my travelling companions filled in their online feedback form and recounted our dismal time at the hotel, they wrote back and said the review was not acceptible because it was too negative, and they would not use it. So I think its fair to assume any reviews and feedback on their site is just marketing hype and should be consequently ignored.

The holiday in Roses Spain is beautiful. Hotel excellent. The train ride in Roses has beautiful views' recommend the 2 hour ride. The visit to Girona is a must do trip. The inclusive trips are good, but did think Barcelona would be better replaced by Girona and the trip to Barcelona optional.
Make sure you travel light and you can cope with carrying your luggage onto trains.
On the downside, our tour guide was not very good. Very pleasant and polite but she was not organised and didn't seem to know her job very well. We became helpers for other people that could not cope. The train tickets from our destination did not include underground tickets to Kings Cross. The London Hotel that was booked put us in a different hotel when we arrived but had to go back there for breakfast!
Apart from these we had a lovely holiday and met a lovely group of people.

We have just returned from a holiday with Rail Discoveries to Switzerland. We received our travel documents from Rail Discoveries but the pack was unclear about how to get from Zurich to Tiefencastel as there were no rail tickets in the pack. This resulted in a phone call to Rail Discoveries who told us the Tour Manager would meet us at Zurich Airport, this should have been explained in the pack. The Tour Manager did ring us a couple of days before departure to explain his plane would be landing approx 20 mins after ours and gave precise instructions on where he would meet us. Our room in the hotel in Tiefencastel was lovely but sadly the dinners let it down. Tiefencastel railway station is at the top of a steep hill which some in our party could not manage although the hotel took them to the railway station in a car. The return journey was awful. We went on the Glacier Express to Andermatt, then we changed trains a further 3 times with very little time given to get to the correct platform if it had not been for our Tour Manager some people would have missed connections, he worked very hard getting peoples suitcases on and off the trains. Thankfully we all arrived together in Basel. The hotel in Basel was lovely and the evening meal was delicious. I wonder though why we had to travel to Basel for our flights home rather than going from Andermatt on a train direct to Zurich with no changes. I cannot sing the praises of the Tour Manager high enough he was very helpful, approachable, patient and gave the impression nothing was too much trouble.
