Reviews of Varndean College

As a student who has studied here for 3 years, I can say that this is a really well rounded collage with great facilities, teachers and students. The only thing I would say is if they could have student parking, as the new parking restrictions make it a nightmare for students who drive to find a place to park.

(From my experience and time here as a student)
OVER ALL: GOOD to great
CURRICULUM: GREAT
TEACHERS: GOOD
Some were amazing, as teachers and as people (like the Classical Civilisation teachers), while some were good, and some were ok. Some are ok as teachers but not so great as people, and others are vice versa. I found it frustrating how some of the teachers (psychology teachers for me) wouldn't really teach and would just set us independent work, and straight up refuse to help even when I expressed clearly that I was stuck to the point of not being able to even start the work. However, my classic civ teachers would always be up for helping and supporting me, and Conor was EXTREMELY supportive and a great help and friend. He helped me a lot with school work as well as mental wellbeing. Conor and Carole are lovely. My 3D teachers were also nice and up for helping whenever, and would frequently check up on students to see if they needed help, and at the start of every lesson they would ask if anyone would like to be seen during that lesson.
WELL BEING TEAM/SERVICES: GOOD.
They try to support students from what I've seen and experienced, but did't really work for me and could be better. They are definitely supportive, on it and try though. Like in the real world, for some it works and for some it doesn't.
STUDENTS: RANGES.
Like in the real world, it ranges. But over all it seemed ok, with not that many "hard nuts" trying to be disruptive and 'cool'.
FOOD: VARIES & OVERPRICED
The quality of the food depends on what you get. Everyone that I've spoken to agrees that the food is overpriced. Not that much of a range. From what I remember there were;
Curly fries, chicken burgers, sandwiches & baguettes (not great), pizza (not great), some sort of salad?, fruit pots, pop corn chicken (not as good as I thought it would be), a few muffins and a small range of snacks like a tiny pack of maltesers, kitkat and some crips.
There was a good range of hot and cold drinks though. (water, coffees, tea, sodas, juices).
I loved the curly fries and chicken burger. I was unfortunately disappointed with the pizza.

Both our very different sons had extremely positive experiences with Varndean. The admissions team were able to spot potential with 1 son's lower than ideal entry grades. 3 years later he starts Uni next month where each year 1300 students apply for 105 places. Our other son completes his 4 year degree next summer which was made possible due to Varndean's staff & their dogged focus on his achievements. Their support & vision eased square pegs into round holes. Of course the boys did the work but with the right guidance doors opened.

OFTSTED inspectors have recently given Varndean College a glowing report, confirming it once again as a good college. Inspectors found a “significant amount” of teaching, learning and assessment to be “outstanding,” including all Visual Arts courses. Major strengths identified by the inspectors included:
Enthusiastic and skilled teachers plan and deliver lessons in a thoughtful and imaginative way, enabling students to be successful.
Students appreciate the strong support from staff which promotes learning and enables students to develop positive working relationships with each other.
Students enjoy coming to College and going to lessons and this is reflected in the high attendance.
The overall quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good and a significant amount is outstanding. This reflects the college’s ethos of maintaining a strong focus on learning for all students and staff.
The inspection team also praised the very successful International Baccalaureate Diploma course:
“In 2011/12, all students completing the course passed and the average diploma score per student was very high compared to national and international averages”.
