Reviews of University of Bristol Botanic Garden

Beautiful gardens - and free if you are a UoB student! (Or alumni or staff). Lovely annual sculpture trail, an events I look forward to! The glasshouses are particularly good when there's a bit of a nip in the air like today, showcasing some great cacti, bird of paradise flowers, and lotuses - sadly not out, but apparently coming in the next few weeks! Apparently everything changes did fast that's it's worth coming back every few weeks anyway because they'll be something new to see :)

This is a hidden gem in a very pleasant residential area. A great place to spend a few hours. We have visited a few times, in particular for the outdoor sculpture exhibition. Fascinating collection of botanical specimens and just a lovely place to spend time. Very relaxed, and you can have coffee or tea on a terrace overlooking an ornamental pool. Very civilised 😊

This lovely garden was a bit smaller than I anticipated but still a joy to walk around. Everything labelled, gorgeous Magnolias and spring meadow at the time of my visit but I imagine there is something lovely in each season. Tropical glasshouses are very interesting, full of unusual and intriguing specimens but sadly no giant lily pads as seen on all the promo shots, perhaps it just wasn't the right time of year.

Free entry for students! Good selection of plants both outside and in glasshouse. A nice afternoon out, particularly enjoyable in the sunny weather.

Really lovely place to visit. Quiet, peaceful but with fascinating tales of botany to educate too. There's a really nice cafe as a bonus.

One of Bristol's hidden gems .... If you can get past the ticket booking process which is needlessly complicated! A lovely way to spend a few hours, kept adults and children engaged and includes lots of interesting plants. One of the highlights was the exceptionally charming and chatty man running the cafe (which provided perfectly acceptable coffee and yummy cakes).

A joy as always to wander through the Bot Garden! The subdued light this morning made the colours even richer.

A real hidden gem! I love the wide selection of plants there from tree ferns to acers, from giant lily pads to pitcher plants. The staff are so friendly and the person in the cafe yesterday was so friendly! If you love gardens and nature then this is really worth a visit. The glass houses are closed at the moment but there is still lots to see.

A great place for a quiet walk away from the noise of the city. As always had a lovely visit.

Interesting and varied gardens, which my children (aged 5, 8, 10) enjoyed exploring for a couple of hours, especially hot houses. Lots of informative signage. Children can enter for free, so only had to pay for myself (£9ish). Plenty of benches to sit on for lunch. Small carpark (free) - adequate for October half term. Clean toilets. Café pleasant but expensive - hot chocolate £3.99, cakes a similar price.

Fantastic collection of plants and trees from all over the globe compacted in to a walk that takes less than an hour! Still looking good in October even after a lack of attention due to the pandemic. Unfortunately the cafe and glass houses aren't open yet but still plenty to see in a colourful displaying particularly outside of the Holmes' house. Perfect for students (who get in for free!) whether you're studying botany or photography!

Beautiful garden full of different plants and trees. Not all facilities are open at the moment but still worth visiting. There is a number of public restrooms and hand sanitizers plus individual time slots for visitors. I would recommend visiting while it's still warm and sunny outside. Note that cafe is not working and there is no convenience store close by.

Beautiful variety of plants, trees & flowers from all over the world. Really good name plaques so you can clearly identify what they are which is great to take overseas visitors who are interested in English gardens. Delightful terrace cafe overlooking the pond and gardens

Amazing. "I never knew that" garden. Loads packed in there, well worth a stroll

Froggy was a wonderful guide, bursting with knowledge and so welcoming to our group.
G. C.
Fascinating collection and well worth a visit for anyone even vaguely interested in plants. I love the tree ferns, and am really looking forward to the glasshouses reopening
M. S.
Really interesting range of plants. Went before lockdown but remember noticing how much work must go into the gardens.

I thought the guided tour was good - our guide explained what a botanic garden was, why plants were planted where they were and how the plant kingdom evolved.

I always like visiting botanic gardens. I was a member of Kew gardens until moving to Bristol. This is a lot smaller than Kew but it did not disappoint. The Bristol botanic garden has a wide variety of plants and they were all very well looked after. As it is smaller, you can see everything within a day, unlike Kew. The garden is well planned and if you follow it's route, you can see everything and will probably give you some surprises. Whether you are planning to visit with friends, family or on your own, it will offer a lovely day out, even on a rainy day. Don't miss out their greenhouses, which offers a wide range of unusual tropical plants. Great one if you are visiting on a cold day :) students, children and University of Bristol staff can visit for free, everyone else will be £5.50. They can only except cash. If you plan to visit frequently, I'd recommend becoming a member, which is £25 a year with unlimited visits. Staff are friendly. They will give you a sticker which is your entry ticket and a map. They encourage you to bring food yourself but there is a cafe. They do shut for a few months over the winter, and I think they closes at 1630. Do check their opening times before going.

Absolutely enchanting we took 2 greatgrand children 12yr and 9yrs they loved the different zones especially the 500miliion yrs of plant evolution. Then the little pond had the sight of a lifetime Dragonflies hatching out on the sides of pool, what an amazing place loved it😍.

I did not know there was a botanical garden in Bristol, but once I knew it was ontop of the to-do list. It did not disappoint.
We were greeted by friendly staff who gave us a quick synopsis and an umbrella.
The gardens are fantastic, we didn't eat at the restaurant, lots of information and alot to see.
Definitely worth a visit, it doesn't feel like your in the city!

Absolutely wonderful. The variety of plants in the gardens and greenhouses is extensive. The layout of the gardens a delight to the eye . A great experience and I look forward to my next visit.

Absolutely goregous place! I loved being immursed in nature and the wildlife in the heart of Bristol. Definitely would reccomend a visit!

Loved the representation of plants 200 million years ago.... woooowwww I was standing there for 15 minutes... looked like another world

Peaceful gardens on a warm sunny remembrance sunday

Definately worth looking out - just off the Downs so could be part of an afternoon stroll

Beautiful plant collection with stunning green houses

Came by on the off chance so was allowed in. Have visited a few times before and always a 5 star experience. Seems to have suffered during lockdown, lot of overgrown plants and shrubs. Not a good time of year for a lot of colour but just seems dull and a bit uncared for. I would say postpone any visit for a few months and I am sure by then will be back to it's former glory. Staff I met very friendly. No criticism of them. Need to pre book online and limited parking.
C. E.
Fantastic visit, well laid out and interesting.

Very pleasant gardens for a relatively short stroll (1.5 hrs'ish), but a little over-priced.
D. P.
The signage to the gardens is poor but still worth a visit. They are interesting but do not expect well cultured show beds.
G. M.
Beautiful mature gardens which are well tended and clearly labelled for reference purposes. Great place for children to explore too!
M. D.
Small, but well worth a visit. Very relaxing. Visit the greenhouses.
R. C.
Bit of a hidden gem! Amazing selection of plants, some very unusual ones too. Plenty of parking. Cafe facilities and cake quality (!) needs improving (unless it has been since my last visit).
C. S.
Nice gardens and some really interesting plants. Took us about an hour to see everything. They only accept cash for entry which in 2018 is a bit ridiculous - we were told that they’ve been trying to get one for years - can’t be that hard surely!?

A great garden with a strong emphasis on information and history. Good for younger children (6+ yrs) and enthusiastic adults.
L. A.
A lovely haven - free for children and students
S. M.
This garden is like no other I know other than Kew, probably because it is curated by botanists as much as it is gardened. The plants are arranged as collections rather than flower-beds. Witty labelling in places "orchids are surprisingly useless except for aesthetics and vanilla". The glass houses are magnificent - collections of cactus, orchids, carnivores, huge water-lilies. You can see many of the rare plants from the Avon Gorge without having to abseil (although that is still an option elsewhere...). A good place to see what might grow in your Bristol garden. It is £3.50 well spent.

I didn't know this existed, but came here a few years ago and it was quite nice. A peaceful environment, with a diverse array of plants. Overall, nice to walk around.

A lovely oasis.
The prehistoric section was particularly good, as were the tropical greenhouses.
S. P.
We had a lovely morning walking around the gardens and green house and popped in for cup of tea in cafe amittly cake choice was terrible but maybe because it was Sunday who knows! We found this place through hotel leaflet and are glad we did
D. B.
Love the gardens a hidden gem! Like a mini Kew Gradens with everything to offfer on a smaller scale and a brilliant place to host an event. Enjoyed shooting Shaun the Sheep Event here for Dunkleys Chartered Accoutnants. You can see some photos on my page, Dianna Bonner Photographer. :)

Such an array of beautiful plants especially the green houses

Good sized botanical gardens. Tea room and toilets
D. L.
Great place to go. Loads of plants to look at.
C. M.
Wide and fascinating variety of plants, make sure to visit the tropical greenhouse.
A. G.
Hidden away behind a normal looking house entrance, the wealth and variety of displays is quite surprising - well, it is a university endeavour, after all.
S. K.
Fascinating gardens and it feels good to spend a few hours among the green!
A. N.
As ever, a most welcoming and comforting surroundings, ideal for reflective strolls.
