Reviews of Somerville College
This is a superb college, within the heart of Oxford. Only women were once permitted to study here, but in recent times it's now mixed. Somerville is probably one of the most inclusive colleges and somewhat more relaxed, than others. The attractive grounds are immaculately kept, with interesting planting throughout the year. Students are allowed to sit on the lawns, which is not something other colleges will entertain. It's a secure place, as all entry points are fitted with heavy gates and card readers. The dining hall is empowering, as portraits of significant female figures adorn the walls. If you are fortunate enough to be invited to a Formal, the service and food is very good with three courses and most dietary requirements covered. Take your own drinks. If you are visiting, limited parking spaces are available on the adjacent streets with 1, or 2 hour slots. Larger car parks are a 5 minute walk away. The location is excellent with bars, restaurants and shops closeby. Somerville has a 'locals' feel to it, as quaint Victorian properties line the streets. For those who enjoy rural areas, Port Meadow is near by. Located next to the river Thames, it's a fabulous place for running and swimming. Somerville accommodation includes older and more modern buildings. Students are responsible and respectful of communal areas, which are kept reasonably clean and tidy. Professional cleaning staff attend every week. Bike racks are available and dotted around the campus.
A marvellous place to study.
One of the best experience in my life, Somerville College its a quiet college, perfect for study in a real international environment, good education, good food and goods installations.
Love this College, Very Historic, Started as a Woman's only in 1879, became unisex in late 1900's. Ghandi family members and Margaret Thatcher are all old pupils.. Pay a Visit... Hopefully open to all sometime after Easter 2021
Biased opinion, but the best of all the colleges. Best four years of my life. Maybe that's sad, but they were really good years! The whole vibe is great, really friendly – both staff and students both – and not nearly as up itself as some other Oxford colleges (I'm looking at you Magdalen). Hell, you can even walk on the grass here, which means one can be out on the grass of the main quad during what we Brits call summer (it gets >20C sometimes!). And that's mighty pleasant.
A beautiful campus with lovely gardens.
Founded in 1879 as Somerville Hall, it was one of the first two women's colleges in Oxford, and its alumnae, such as Margaret Thatcher, Indira Gandhi, Dorothy Hodgkin, Iris Murdoch, Vera Brittain, Cornelia Sorabji, Dorothy L. Sayers and many activists, have played a major role in feminism. Today, around 50 per cent of the students are male.
Tom Szostak aint great
Food alright
The gardeners are working hard, and the spring flowers are beginning to look splendid.
Great college, would definitely recommend applying here. The food is decent too.
Stunning college. Amazing students (might be a bit biased to be fair)
