J. C.The house that Tom Hayes and William Anderson of Jeffcoate Anderson designed and built for us is stunning.
In September 2019 we purchased a “cottage with planning permission” and approached JAA because they were local to where we then lived. What an excellent choice that turned out to be.
They designed and built our house during the pandemic. Consultations had to be by phone, email and Zoom; and latterly there were some safely distanced outdoor site meetings. Despite many delays and supply problems we were able to move in for Christmas 2021.
In the beginning we were asked what we wanted - we said a house of “glass and wood”, which is what we now have: a beautiful house, full of light, which sits happily in the leafy space that surrounds it.
C. S.I got great support from William before I had even bought a property! He came to look at a couple of places to give me an opinion on what might be possible in terms of reconfiguration and extending. By the time I finally bought somewhere we had developed an easy understanding with each other that made the design process quick and exciting.
William created a kitchen/ dining space to make the most of the light with a corner window seat that has fabulous views of the garden. The exterior design features give a nod to the Georgian surroundings, but are unapologetically modern and strong.
The extension transforms an ordinary New Town basement flat into something fabulous. Its my favourite room in the flat. Even when the rain is pouring down I can sit in my window seat and draw energy from the light.

However, Gavin Jefcoate came up with a practical and imaginative solution which took into account the needs of our family and our budget whilst making the most of the glorious views from our garden which previously couldn’t be fully appreciated from inside the house. Gavin was easy to work with, and rolled his sleeves up and got stuck in more than one occasion to help move things along. We now have the most amazing extension to our house which has had such a positive effect on our family life. The only way we would move now is if we were unexpectedly able to afford to do a new build, for which we would most definitely employ Jefcoate Anderson Architects.

My wife Maite and I can’t praise enough our architect, Gavin Jefcoate of Jefcoate Anderson Architects, Edinburgh, for his plans for a new house were perfect for the circumstances.
Our large garden in Craigleith Road seemed suitable for dividing into two and building a house on the vacant side but although our first architect did his best his plans were rejected and we also lost the appeal.
What was needed was a different approach and Gavin designed a smaller, innovative, and eco friendly modern property that was just right for the space. The design was also sufficiently different, yet appropriate, for the area.
He also advised we engage a consultant, Albert Muckley of Ironside Farrar, and he guided us through the application and appeals, all the way to the Scottish Government, and the plans were finally approved.
We just could not have done this without Gavin and Albert and Jefcoate and Anderson Architects. Fantastic result!

They listened to what we wanted and came up with a creative and innovative solution that fulfilled our brief in full, blending a traditional building with a contrasting modern extension. The resulting house is eco-efficient, maximises the wonderful views and is a joy to live in.
They worked closely with the builders resolving the issues that arise with a complicated build marrying old and new.
