Was started in 1968, as Neighbours-in-Poplar (NIP). Received a grant and funding to restore this church, built by the British East India Company (which expanded into an empire) and ruled the Indian sub-continent and stretched all the way to China. Once restored - this once church with its 16th-century graves and tombstones (still intact) and original clocktower - became known as the St Matthias Community Centre. It organises (and functions) as a lively centre for the community, in all aspects -including dances, weddings and official functions for the Borough.
