I volunteered here as a group with my work colleagues, organised by my employer. The company does some great work and I got to see a lot of the areas they deliver to on a delivery run.
They accept individuals and groups volunteering. They are a friendly team and good at what they do, efficient in redistributing food to areas around Manchester.

What a wonderful job these people do, it's simply amazing. And what's more, they do it in a cheery, helpful and professional way. Brilliant, absolutely brilliant!!

FareShare is a fantastic charity that takes over-stocked food that's been donated by supermarkets and other suppliers and delivers it to people who are experiencing food poverty.
The Greater Manchester branch of the organisation is based on New Smithfield Market so that it can easily receive the fresh food deliveries that arrive by lorry every day.
The service is run by a small dedicated army of staff and volunteers who take an inventory of the incoming stock, match it to local good causes and then deliver the supplies. Like many charities in these times, funding requirements are an ever-present challenge, and that's reflected to some extent in the appearance of the office. At present this branch of the charity is operating out of an old industrial unit, where the management, admin, logistics and customer service personnel work cheerily, side by side, in a single small room, using pre-loved furniture supplied by its partner organisation EMERGE Recycling, which is based in the same building.
But don't let appearances fool you; this is an extremely well run venture, which manages to create order out of the chaos that sometimes accompanies the regular arrival of fresh supplies, the detail of which the team may have little advance notice of, due to the short shelf life nature of the goods.
In a neighbouring unit sits the business end of the operation; an extremely busy refrigerated warehouse. This is a hive of efficient activity that seems almost like a choreographed dance, with lorries, forklift trucks and delivery vans weaving rapidly to and fro, as goods arrive and depart.
Talking to the staff and volunteers, you quickly get the impression that everyone on the team wants to be there and believes passionately in what they are doing. It makes a refreshing change from some work environments.
It's clear that the charity is rapidly outgrowing its home due to increasing demand for its services, and I understand that in 2019 they are running an appeal to enable them to move to larger premises.
It's a sad state of affairs that the use of philanthropic initiatives like food banks and school holiday lunch clubs is rising at a worrying speed, but it's good to know that charities like FareShare are helping those in need. The other upside to what they do is that they prevent perfectly good food from going to waste in landfill or incinerators, so they're combating climate change too. All in all this is a very worthwhile charity, and the site is a good place to visit with the expectation that going there and talking to the team can be sobering, humbling and uplifting in equal measures.

Great charity fighting food waste and food poverty across Greater ManchesterIn 2018 redistributed 869 tonnes of food which helped served over 2 million meals. Always looking for volunteers to help.
