I volunteered with Travelteer for 6 weeks this summer doing the medical elective and it was one of the best experiences I’ve had. Everyone was super friendly, the volunteering itself was amazing I was able to learn and see so much, activities were planned for us and overall it was a really positive experience completely unmatched with anything I’ve done before. I 100% recommend Travelteer to anyone

worked in sri lanka for 4 weeks, the marine project is amazing! the staff in house and on projects are supportive, funny, and ready to help volunteers learn all new things. the coordinators were super fun to be around and it felt like a little family :) so many cool activities and days together outside of the projects, its a great experience with friends and memories for life !

I stayed with Travelteer in Sri Lanka for 10 weeks in total over summer. I had the most incredible, life changing experience. All the staff and coordinators at Travelteer were so welcoming and lovely. I mostly did English Development and Marine and Wildlife, but I also got the opportunity to do some of the Sport and Mental Health projects, too. I loved all the projects. Travelteer put a lot of thought and effort into setting up and organising their projects and these projects make such a positive impact within the community.
I also did the Coast2coast tour, which was fantastic and we got to see so many incredible places. Sri Lanka is an absolutely stunning country with an incredible culture. I 100% recommend doing the tour whilst you are there. Overall, Travelteer is a great way to experience Sri Lanka, whilst also knowing you are doing your bit to make a difference in the world.

Travelteer have been amazing from start to finish. I spent 4 weeks on the Marine & Wildlife programme and did the coast 2 coast tour. The tour was amazing and such good value for money, literally saw all the best bits of Sri Lanka in one week. The volunteering was so much fun, and I actually felt like I made a real difference to the community. Accommodation is awesome - it’s on the beach in a cool surf town. Shout out to Laurence, Noah, Ruchi and the rest of the team for organising such an unforgettable experience.
Would 100% recommend !!!

I volunteered with Travelteer for 2 months and it was an amazing experience. I volunteered at Karapitiya Teaching Hospital in Galle & the Maliban Rehabilitation Unit and in various Ayurveda clinics around Hikkaduwa. I learnt so much during my time on the psychiatric ward and got to make a real difference in the lives of patients under treatment at the rehab centre. At the Ayurveda clinics Dr Nalika was amazing in explaining every treatment and giving us presentations on the history and methods of Ayurveda, I am so grateful for all the knowledge she has shared with us. Outside of volunteering was also amazing, the coordinators Lydia, Allie, Steph and Noah were so great to be around, always organising brilliant nights out and trips around Sri Lanka. The staff at Travelteer house, Ruchi, Chef, Anushka, Thisal, Aruni and everyone were the best and always there to help with anything. A truly unforgettable 2 months.

HONEST REVIEW!
I went as part of a large group. The tour week was fantastic but the volunteering week experience let it down in the end. This is an honest review based on mine and my group’s experience.
Positives:
Amazing tour and well informed about Sri Lanka throughout. Jam packed days, great food and mostly lovely accommodation on the tour!
Had such a great insight to beautiful Sri Lanka and how lovely the people are. Our bus driver Nalen and our guide Ed were amazing and really gave us a tour to remember.
Negatives:
In denial founder and staff. E.g. - 6 of us had D.O.B wrong on our visas and had to pay extra when we got to Colombo. One of my friends was also accused of getting their own D.O.B wrong and that it was their fault!
The travelteer house was not well kept, mouldy pillows and walls, stinking floors and walls, and wet dinner plates!
We were being over charged for most things - we offered to have a pool party at our friends hotel for 1500 rupees each (not much at all), but the coordinator wanted to ‘work out how much to charge everyone’ before telling the group the price. It was a 10 minute walk away and no extra costs would be necessary, what could they possibly be charging us extra for an event we organised?
I was also told 4 different prices for the river safari (not a safari), which we did instead of a volunteering day. From £8 to £11 in the same day! Felt as if we were being scammed. Also - £45 each for a transfer to the airport?! I get that you have to make money as a charity but the whole trip for 3 of us was £30 with a local taxi company.
Coordinators were just volunteers that stayed on longer, not first aid trained or well organised at all. Didn’t know what we were doing most volunteering days or seemed like they cared either!
After getting our family and friends to donate to the charity for the marine and wildlife volunteering week, the volunteering didn’t seem worth it. We were sold a dream on that. Didn’t do much work most days (apart from the day we planted loads of baby mangrove trees! Great day!). BUT apparently they changed it up because ‘we didn’t want to’ according to the travelteer main man Laurence Tranfield. Yet when I spoke to staff in Sri Lanka it was because they thought we would be volunteering for 2 weeks, rather than 1? Hmm..
I had a call with Laurence to discuss our experience afterwards, he pretty much didn’t give a f*ck and there was no apology for anything, blaming us for most of the things that went wrong and being super defensive about his organisation. During our phone call, he accused us of being racist towards a member of staff’s family as we watched an amazing parade from the house balcony one evening. Many of us were having a great time with them, playing around with the children and learning lingo from the adults - great vibes! To be called racist after the trip was shocking to hear, especially as nothing at all was mentioned about this at the time. We are a geography society with a ZERO tolerance for racism, homophobia, sexism and any general d*ck head behaviour.
It’s disappointing that these negatives are so exhaustive and that this is not even all of them. It was a great trip and we can only thank travelteer for that, but a lack of transparency, poor communication and an ignorant founder who can’t separate his emotions from his business really tipped our experience to a negative one.
This charity has had great reviews and that’s why we chose them. I can’t vouch for any body else’s experience, but this was mine. 🤟
