After what had seemed to be a losing battle I contacted Nelsons after finding them of the Headway website for people who have had brain injury. Melanie was was solicitor, and I have to say how remarkable she was in dealing with a very stubborn ex. She was clear, pulled no punches in what to expect, worked very hard in a short space on time to get my family an out of court agreement that was ratified by the court. Even the Judge expressed his congratulations to her for dealing with this in a very professional, efficient manner and a good out come for my family. You get what you pay for, and I am certain that the outcome would not have been so good with out her in our corner.

TL;DR Pros * Initial forms and ID checks could be completed via email/phone * Offered to fully refund fee when I had to cancel my conveyancing within the cancellation period * Cancellation could be completed via email Cons * Required form and payment in order to instruct them (which slowed down initial process) * Often took several days to respond to emails - emails sent on a Thurs wouldn't get a response until Tues * Spoke to seller's side before giving me contact details * Had to chase refund as not sent within specified period -- I'm a first time buyer and aimed to sign up with Nelsons for my conveyancing. In order to instruct them, I was asked to fill in a lengthy form, send proof of ID and pay £300. Due to the current pandemic, all of this could be completed via email/phone, or you could choose to send the forms back via post. This took me a few days as I had to hunt down some information and provide proof of funds etc. But I completed all 3 steps on a Thursday afternoon and expected to hear back on the Friday with details of the Nelson's representative that would be my point of contact. However, the next email I received wasn't until the Tuesday afternoon. In this email I learned that they had already tried to speak to the seller's estate agent, but the agent wanted me to confirm the name of my solicitor before releasing any information. I was a little disappointed by this - not only because they had spoken to the seller's side before contacting me, but also because I felt it made me look bad for not passing on my solicitor's details (which I couldn't have done as no one from Nelsons had been in touch). Nonetheless, I now had the name and contact number for a member of the conveyancing team, and passed these to the estate agent and my mortgage broker to allow things to progress. Given that a week had elapsed between my offer and being able to submit my mortgage paperwork, my broker found that the mortgage we aimed to apply for was no longer available. Unfortunately the new lender did not have Nelsons on the list of approved solicitors, so I was given two options; wait 6-8 weeks for Nelsons to apply to the lender for approval, or change solicitor. I opted for the latter and sent a cancellation email a week after my initial instruction email, again on a Thursday afternoon. And yet again, I heard nothing back from Nelsons until the following Tuesday. Thankfully they offered to refund the £300 in full, and told me this would take 3-5 days to come through. But over a week later, I still didn't have the funds in my bank. I emailed them to follow this up and was told there had been a delay on their end, and they would chase this up, and the money did come through a couple of days later. Given my experience with them, I can't actually comment on the quality of their conveyancing as I didn't get that far. But I was a little bit disappointed by the whole process. I think in total I ended up having contact with about 4 different people, none of which was actually my given contact at the firm. Whilst they can't be blamed for me having to choose another mortgage lender, I do feel that the requirement to fill in the detailed form in order to instruct them and the delay in getting back to me with contact details did slow down my mortgage application. If this had been quicker I may have been able to go with the initial lender, and would still be using Nelsons. Overall I've given the whole experience 3* - it wasn't fantastic but it wasn't terrible, and I'm thankful that I could get a full refund. That said, I'm much happier with my new solicitor. They allowed me to instruct them via email and complete the lengthy form (including ID and initial payment) within 2 weeks. I had the name of my contact within 3 hours, and any emails I send get a response within about 45 minutes. So maybe this whole thing was a blessing in disguise?
