Reviews of Mark's Bread
M. H.
Possibly the best sausage, egg and bacon sandwich I've ever eaten in a cafe. A good choice of bread and friendly staff. Will definitely return when I'm next in the area.
a. k.
Delish sandwich... and i managed to get it gluten free!!! Amazing to get the option at a bakery... not only that but they delivered on the ingredients, flavour and size!! Very grateful and full!!
M. R.
I've tried many pastries during the course of my life and this bakery is among the best. Sweet or savoury the flavours are well considered. When I visited mince pie filling was being mixed, it was a delight for the senses.
S. R.
The best cafe ever with delicious and freshly baked breakfast options
L. A.
Today was the first time we visit Mark's bread because we had various breads before, my brother in law used to buy it for us once we live in Gloucester! We love it! It was a first for the breakfast and wow, the most delicious breakfast I ever had! The atmosphere and staff were amazing too, very nice people! We can't wait to go back! Loved the eggs, the bread, thesausage, the bacon and those beans have an incredible sauce, YUM!!! 😍
J. W.
Stopped for a sandwich earlier and it was delicious! The staff were super friendly and there was a really nice welcoming feel once you stepped inside.
K. D.
The bread was absolutely delicious! I had a decaf coffee and, as with most places, the decaf can't compare to the full caf coffee beans but nevertheless, friendly service and gorgeous looking bread!!
J. J.
Massive, nutritious and tasty vegan sandwich for a lunch treat when I was in the area, top marks. I was told they always have a vegan sandwich of the day, though they don't seem to mention it online. Price not so much more than a supermarket sandwich and much better value, and came with a free glass of water which is all I wanted for lunch. Also got an organic rye loaf, which was just slightly drier than I prefer and cost more than my favourite from Herberts, but still good. Server didn't communicate so well, but swapped the wrong loaf and didn't charge the extra so not unhappy about that.
A. W.
Amazing place to go for breakfast - the breads are brilliant too. Great staff, polite and happy. Loved the decor, very popular among the locals. Highly recommend.

Mark's warms up my days everyday just with the smell that comes from their bakery that invades north street and the surrounding area. I love their bread and treats. I am lucky to have them as a local bakery!
D.
I nip into Mark's Bread once a week for lunch as a bit of a treat from the usual routine of packed lunches and it's genuinely something I look forwards to. £5 or so for a freshly made sandwich off the deli, stacked just about as high as is practical with whatever fillings you've picked out. Delicious too!
The only real trouble I find with this place is that the selection of soft drinks leaves me wanting. They've plenty of organic, eco-friendly, healthy things - but you won't find a 'full fat' coke or even just a straight bottle of orange or apple juice. Alas for that I go up the road.
D. W.
Great little spot for breakfast in the morning with a good selection of pastries and hot Sandwiches. Coffee was decent as well and the place has a good feel with friendly staff
L. D.
Always love visiting marks bread- staff are lovely and cheerful and the food/ coffee is great! A lovely little gem on north street.
A. V.
Friendly helpful staff. Bread is very good, lovely and tasty, good variety of Artisan bread.
k. c.
Went in to sample the magic bag. Mainly bread but worth the money.
K. I.
Whoever was baking the Chelsea buns for today has absolutely smashed it! I often get a bun from there and maybe they don't have much icing on or are a bit burnt on top. But today is the best Chelsea bun I've ever had. Thank you Monday baker 👌🏻
E. P.
The vegan, gluten free cake they made for our wedding was incredible. We hadn't tasted it beforehand so were a bit worried but it was absolutely delicious. Vegans and non-vegans both loved it and it went down a massive hit! I'd definitely order again and recommend to others.
R. S. F.
Local bakery with the best sourdough and different special bread every day of the week. The vegan coconut brownie is the most tasty cake I have ever tried. If you look to have full breakfast, this is the best place in North Street to eat it. You don't have to wait long and it is not very pricey. The coffee is not their best but they win on the rest.
V. D.
Amazing sourdough homemade bread and tasty pastries. The celebration cakes are very beautiful and well done. Staff is very helpful and smiley. The only thing I would change is the coffee. Taste is very bitter and kind of burnt flavour. However, I think it is a great place to have lunch and buy bread at the same time.
T. K.
I am so very lucky to have this shop almost on my doorstep. They sell an amazing array of different delicious breads and pastries and have a very good cafe. The cherry on the top for me is the fact that you can get a "builders" mug of tea for £1. The staff serving have always been very friendly and helpful. It is my favourite place for a catch up with friends.
G. G.
You can't really fault this place. It is my local but very, very good. The bread is great, the coffee and teas are very good, the people and service are excellent.
Couldn't recommend more.
They also have daily bread specials... unique breads each day they bake. Always great!
K. S.
The only issue with living behind Mark's is that it's always tempting to go back hours later for another thing! I had their delicious Pain au Chocolat this morning, and then went back for my lunch! Best sandwich in the area, by a country mile!
B. A.
Love this place. They keep the specials list on their website up-to-date too, so you can rely on that. I pop in once or twice a week to get one of the special sourdoughs (the pot set seed one is especially nice, as is the cider one).
They do tend to sell out of the large specials before lunch sometimes though, leading only the small specials and the regular sourdoughs, so get on it if you want them :)
Large is about £3.50 and worth every penny.
They also sell hot pizza slices for £2. Doughy and delicious. Very lucky to have this place a 15 minute walk from me.
R. A.
Undoubtedly the best bakery in the immediate area but compared to other bakeries around Bristol, I think it's lacking in passion and creativity. It's sort of ticking over and living off of its initial success. With no other competing bakeries in the area, it doesn't really have to innovate - it's not hard to compete with Parsons!
Some items are clearly very popular - because they're great! Cheese and leek rolls, grilled cheese, cheese sandwiches, they all sell out whilst there's literally mounds of other, inferior items that are never sold out. I'd say over 50% of the time those items are sold out. Surely it's basics - make what the people want! Every other time I go, I forget that they have a £4 minimum spend on card and I'd happily spend over £4 to make up the difference but there's rarely anything else in stock that I'd eat!
I love an almond croissant. Every single one I've had from here is flat and stale. In the pan au chocolate's, the chocolate is always lost inside of pastry and there's not much chocolate in there, the ratios are all off! Like nothing I've had in France. The millionaire shortbread is very unusual, there's no crack of nicely tempered chocolate on top, just thick, soft, unusual tasting chocolate, then mounds of soft filling spills out over your hand - the ratios are all off again. The cakes here just seem big and clumsy, there's no finesse.
I do hope that things change here, otherwise I'll have to venture out to other bakeries instead and I don't think I'll be the only one.
W. x.
Outstanding. Giant portions at very low prices, considering the quality you're getting. I have to stop myself going here daily as I'd get too fat.
A.
Without question the best sourdough I've had in the city. I'm happy to make the 10 mile round trip nearly every Saturday morning to pick some up. What lets it down for me though is the old fashioned payment method. Cash only for anything under £4 means I have to go somewhere else to draw money out then I'm left with change clogging up my pockets which I have no use for. Are people nowadays really expected to always carry cash with them?
M. (.
Whilst in the Cotswold we stopped at a farm shop. They were selling marks bread. Best sourdough we have had. The texture was great. It is something we get when ever we visit now.
D. H.
It's bread Jim, but not as we know it. Proper bread, proper bakers, proper taste, proper flour, proper proving, proper crusts. It's all just proper. Staff always seem very upbeat, and they make a simple purchase a little pleasure. And the cafe next door - best coffee on North Street and really good food.
B. H.
Never really used the cafe but my #1 choice for weekend bread since it first opened. Chelsea buns are amazing. My only minor gripe is the specials don't rotate on the weekend any more, so the fig and pepper bread is never available on Saturdays!
B. G.
One of the best value cafes in Bristol? Great quality and not posy. Light lunch, pastry, fully English the best bread to take away, your choice! Also serve extract coffee to wash it all down.
D. S.
There are some great independent bakers in Bristol but I think Marks is my favourite. Bread is full of texture and flavour, well worth the queue.
A. U.
Their bread.. is worth waking up early - because they sell out fast! :)
C. R.
Marks Bread is one of the best bakeries I'm Bristol. This and Hart's Bakery are in my top two. Both have a non-commercial and local feel with very tasty food. The White Sourdough is delicious. It's busy (like Hart's) but for good reason.
W. o. B.
The very best bread and cakes. Their GF loaf can last for nearly a week, and is so deliciously dense it could break toughened glass. I've only twice managed to call there on the day they offer fig and oat slices - the best ever. The coffee's unusually good too, so the officionados claim
e. p.
Mark's Bread is an award winning bakery made up of a small cafe and shop front.
The bread is made fresh daily with different daily specials that are sure to impress. The popeyseed and olive loafs are some that have already become fast favourites in our home.
The staff are happy and helpful and can arrange orders for pick up. Stock does move quick so be sure to get in earlier than later.
The cafe, which has different hours than the shop, is a local favourite and has a small seating area with a good selection of food to be paired with their breads.
M. B. (.
Tiny little bakery that does some on the best bread I've ever had. They always seem to have something new every time I go there. The 'Pizza Bread' is great for lunch. The cafe next door serves up some of their wares as well.
A. J.
Somewhere that's packed out with locals tells me this is the place to come.
Artisan breads aplenty and you can watch the bakers at work.
The queue for the bread was long but moved quickly.
The adjoining coffee shop offered a wide range of teas as well as coffees which were fab tasting and delivered to our table.
Popular with families.
S. T.
Mark's is a wonderful artisan bakery with friendly, helpful staff. The range of breads is large, with different offerings every day, as well as a few standards. Their cakes, biscuits, and savory pastries are worth trying - I particularly like the chocolate stout cake.
They also have a cafe area where you can enjoy their produce along with great tea or coffee. The bacon sandwiches are a main stay, as is toast served with local jams. But they also serve light meals - soups, sandwiches, salads, along with specials.
Once you've gone there the odds are you'll become a regular.
J. N.
Good coffee and place to stop off for a price of cake or some lunch. There build your own sandwich is always a winner!
A. G.
Mark's Bread is an amazing yet quaint bakery that offers a variety of fresh and delicious baked goods. Their sandwiches are the best part of my weekend 😄
J. Z.
Such good bread! I rarely wake up early enough on a weekend to actually get there in time, before they run out of loaves. Expect queues, although they've changed the layout a little now so you don't have to wait in the street. Endorsed by Jamie Oliver!
J. A.
The queue out the door the entire time we were there says it all really. Amazing bread. Tasty breakfast and coffee. Ended up spending a fortune taking various cakes and savoury items home. I'm looking forward to going back!
M. S.
Delicious bread , probably the best and cakes at this friendly cafe .
K. M.
Cosy, unpretentious local bakery and cafe with friendly, helpful staff and a buzzy vibe. Music is always good and its kid friendly. But what makes it special though, is the baked goods which are made fresh on site and are consistently delicious. I only wish it opened on a Sunday!
P. L.
Friendly staff, efficient service magnificent (wheat free) bread.
J. B.
Lovely staff, the Earl Grey tea was beautiful. The three-mint is so refreshing and the Chelsea bun was both soft and moist.
D. S.
Lovely relaxed atmosphere. Clean and modern.
D. P.
Specialists at making bread. Have to admit, their bread with soup takes the soup to a whole new level. They are busy almost all day and run out of stuff quite early in the day. Did not find their pizza breads as good or their cookies. Otherwise, 5*
A. P.
Great sandwich - setting new standards of lunchtime experiences if a little pricey. Good friendly service and worth a visit.
K. S.
Their coffee and sandwiches are world class. Great ambiance and service. :)
M. M.
Family favourite. Huge range of delicious sourdough bread, pastries and other goodness. Also has a nice café next door. Expect queues. Highly recommend.
T. B.
Food good, I wouldn't go far as to say the bread is incredible, although I did expect that after the reviews. The eggs on toast are amazing. The takeaway pizza slices are pretty poor
A. M.
A lovely spot for a cup of tea or coffee. Mark's has a very independent, unique feel. I haven't tried their food, but it all looks and smells amazing!
J. W.
The bread is excellent for one! And the breakfasts they do are great, service has always been great and quick. Well priced. And get a bacon sandwich because they are lush..!
J. W.
Nice staff and service. Great food and drinks. Bread is amazing.
N. P.
Great little bakery, outstanding range of absolutely delicious bread, not cheap but worth every penny. Highly recommended indeed.
G. C.
Love this place, amazing bread/baked goods and brilliant coffee. Would have 5 stars but the customer service is sub par every time I visit
C. B.
Very friendly staff, only had a bacon butty meal deal with cuppa.... Lovely bread with a choice of what tasted like homemade red or brown sauce, bacon was a over cooked to my liking but still very nice!
J. C.
The best bread shop in Bristol, and a gem of a cafe. Their pop-up pizza nights are just amazing if you can get a table.
D. M.
I queue for my Saturday treat....7 seed sourdough and croissants having cycled from Bishopston....because theirs is the best.
J. H.
Great bread. I recommend the build your own sandwiches with a selection of fillings that should cater for everyone.
D. M.
I wish I lived closer to this place - great quality walnut bread and amazing white chocolate and orange cake! When I'm next in Bristol, there is no doubt I'll be back! 😁
m. L.
Lush good and great coffee. Their breakfast offerings are really good and customisable, and there is gluten free bread available.
A. G.
Great place. Sourdough loaf makes lovely toast. White baguette makes great sandwiches. Nice pastries too.
M. K.
Utterly delicious! Not cheap, perhaps, but certainly not overpriced, and so much better than any bread you'll find anywhere else in the city - well worth seeking out.
B. H.
Great coffee and also great bread and pastries, sausage rolls and pizza slices. Queues can be a bit much now the bakery and cafe are in the same room.
S. T.
Great bread. Love their french baguette & spelt & sourdough bread. Transform bread from a staple to a luxury food...flavour, texture. ..not price.
B. P.
Excellent bread and various imaginative other bakery products. Also they do an amazing "pop up pizza" evening once a month which is brilliant quality and great value for money.
R. M.
Best bread in the west, delicious socials board too. We had the salad plate and a garlic mushrooms toastie, delicious every mouthful.
v. t.

e. k.

J. L.
Fab place to get bread and all things baked but can be bit too pricey for regular visits. Be careful to get there early on a Saturday as normally sold out by mid morning.
J. C.
Fantastic, local, independent bakery. Delicious coffees, fresh pastries and breads. Plus a view through to the bakers working away.
A. A.
By far, the best sourdough I've ever tried in the UK.
C. W.
Good luck finding a space in this busy (for good reason) bakery and café. Their bacon buttie on beer sourdough bread is worth making the effort.
S. S.
My favourite place for bread and cosy Saturday breakfasts. Bacon and eggs on sardough, top and incredible veggie options too.
E. M.
Great bread. Have to avoid due to my cheese/sausage roll addiction. Too many mins and tiny toddlers weekdays x
J. C.
Very good food and coffee. Staff are friendly and service is prompt. 20p surcharge on cards and my table was a bit wobbly hence the 4* but overall a great spot
