Reviews of KJ's Bothy Bakery - was Mountain Cafe Aviemore
T. T.
This place was recommended to us by a fellow guest when we mentioned that we were on the hunt for the best scones in the area and we were not disappointed.(take home style) We got a few more sweet buns as we couldn’t resist the temptation to try as much goodies as we can. The whole shop was just full of eye catching and mouth watering creations. But the most beautiful item was the framed story of the existence of the business that pays tribute to its supporters for its survival during the COVID period. It does get busy, but worth the wait

Poppedin whilst waiting for pizza from Andersons next door. Great selectionof cakes breads sandwiches, hot food and pastries.

Amazing fresh bread, savoury muffins, cakes and scones - 8 Yr old claimed best scone he's ever had. Really good coffee too. Great to accidently find this place after searching Aviemore for where their cafe used to be.
M. W.
Our favourite bakery for specialty bread, savoury scones, savoury muffins, soups and great coffee. Wonderful cakes too! There are a few tables outside for warmer days. Friendly service guaranteed.

When you hear about a fellow kiwi doing something great you just have to do your best to support them so we stopped in on our travels through the Cairngorms...and we are both so happy that we did! The Anzac cookies and the pork & haggis sausage roll were incredible, the coffee reminded me of home, and the meringue lasted all of 60 seconds! I highly recommend that you include KJ's Bothy Bakery as a stop on your travels in the area - or even make a special trip JUST to visit, you will not be disappointed! Keep doing what you are doing Kirsten, making fellow kiwis proud! I'm off to buy the cookbook that I couldn't fit in my luggage.

It's a shame it's no longer a cafe/restaurant in Aviemore as they always offered amazing food. I think lots of people are popping into the outdoor pursuits shop asking about it! However, it's now become an amazing bakery selling a massive range of items in an industrial estate near Grantown-on-Spey. So many amazing pastries and loads to choose from. Took us at least 20 minutes and we came away with far more than we needed. Decent decaf coffee too! Highly recommended.
B. M.
And the Lord sent down to Earth a sausage roll of such size and taste it powered a cycle around the Cairngorms. Great selection of pastries and savouries and I'd recommend the chef's flat white pre-cycling. Gave me beans. Looking forward to the 400 mile journey to visit again.

Absolutely fantastic! Staff were so friendly and helpful, and the cakes were delicious!!
R. H.
Highly recommend Mountain Cafe for breakfast/brunch and decent coffee in Aviemore. Tucked above a winter sports shop, it’s a Kiwi run (Tim Tams ARE available - bonus) smallish cafe but with enough space for a party of 6 if you need or a buggy - just beware the narrow staircase up from the shop. We had coffees, a bacon roll and the French toast - which sounded and looked mad but was absolutely delicious. Well worth the money. Baby change is available too.
K. G.
It was closed when we visited them in the afternoon during normal working hours so not fair to rate them low or 5. Heard it’s not the same old mountain cafe that was popular amongst the people since it was taken over by a different owner. Would still want to give it a try.
G. B.
Delicious coffee and cakes! The setting is very unassuming and some may be unsure. We had a delicious banana chocolate and cardamom cake, a biscoff and KitKat brioche and a Nutella doughnut they were delicious. They also sell other bits n bobs like basic groceries and some gifts.
R. W.
Had a great experience here, can’t wait to go back and have already recommended to friends - the scones were the best I’ve ever had (don’t tell my Gran!)

Utterly superb. Drove from Aviemore just for a coffee. Shop is excellent. Food inside incredible and the staff are bloody lovely!
L. W.
Great wee place. Very warm and welcoming. Above the sports shop. Great views and lovely food. Coffee was delicious. We stopped there morning on a way up to John O'groats. Easy to find just off the main road. Carpark accessible to all. Staff very polite and welcoming. Nice cosy place with fireplace and nice wooden decor. Food of plentiful and very yummy. Plenty choice of drink and food. Views for the hills make it very nice. Would recommend and will be back.
H. H.
Had a lovely breakfast here!! Portions are very generous!! Its always busy so you might have to wait, but they have a buzzer system so you don't have to linger on the stairs!!
E. M.
Had one of the best breakfasts ever. Straight off the sleeper from London, it was exactly what was needed. Friendly service and was quiet on a Friday morning although I hear it gets v busy at weekends.
N. M.
Visited twice while on holiday in Scotland absolutely fantastic cakes and great staff well worth a visit if you're in the area
A. C.
Excellent staff, superb food and good views.
Usually busy and have to wait , but pagers/buzzers don’t tie you to the stairs any more.
Good selection of dairy free cakes
R. R.
When in Aviemore and feeling like a munch and a good coffee, pop into the mountain cafe you wont be disappointed i promise. First of all probably one of the best breakfast 's you will try anywhere in scotland and an excellent filtered cup of coffee to go with it. Cant complain atall about the food. Thought the service was excellent, the waitresses were very friendly and helpful. 👍 . Service with a smile always helps and especially ehen you have came in from the freezing cold . 👏👏👏 . The whole cafe was excellent with some amazing selection of cakes aswell mmm mmm . If you are into outdoor adventures then downstairs is an Aladdin's cave of gear gear gear of all sorts. That eith cakes upstairs you honestly cant go wrong when stopping off here. Will definitely be back . Well done all involved. 10/10 👏👏👏👏
R. H.
Best cake in Scotland!! A must visit. Coffee and food is fantastic too and the views are incredible. If i ever move to Aviemore it will be becuase of this place... well and the mountains! 😍😍 …

This cafe -- opened by a female chef originally from New Zealand -- offers up really innovative eats for tourists just passing through Aviemore while exploring the Cairngorms. We ordered the corn cakes that were stuffed with great veggies and topped with ham, as well as a tomatillo (I think?) salsa. The fish chowder was delicious as well, and came with a lovely savory scone. The dessert selection was boundless -- everything looked delicious and the beetroot chocolate cake (which is what we ended up painfully settling on) was incredible -- moist and sweet without being cloying. I highly recommend stopping by this cafe if you have time!
a. m.
A very friendly welcome by the staff at the cafe on Sunday. My dog absolutely loved the attention , and was looking for her sausage and bacon you offered. When we made it back down in evening, had to drag her past she was trying to get back in to see you all.Thank you from Amanda, Leigh and dog Cameron Diaz.
C. H.
Quite simply, this is the best bakery on earth. From the staff to the building to the tasty, TASTY goodies they sell - nobody does it better.
B. S.
Amazing food, superb cakes, great coffee and really friendly staff. Highly recommended!
L. K.
Fantastic place. Best breakfast I've ever had. Nice service. Always busy and always a small wait. Had to wait 20 minutes.
M. N.
I love this cafe. Food is just what I like to eat. The portions are huge and it's lovely fresh food.
I had the falafel sandwich. Tremendous.
G. M.
Walked the Dava Way in April, and called into KJ's for some supplies - staff put together an epic lunch for us, wrapping everything carefully so it wouldn't get damaged in our bags, and wished us well! The veggie sausage roll was particularly yum, takeaway coffees perfect, and brownies to die for! Really glad the business is still going strong even after Covid and moving from the Aviemore location. Thoroughly recommend if you're passing through Grantown on foot, bike, or car!
L. B. L.
The menu always has a share of trusted traditionals as well as something different thanks to KJ's NZ influence. The sweetcorn fritters today with avocado & bacon was superb and I'm told the burger was the best in a long time. Always worth a visit here (& the baking is not to be missed!)
S.
Stopped for lunch, both enjoyed it. Good service but I wouldn't like to be there at peak season as no doubt large wait times!
S. N.
Awesome bakery with a range of breads, cakes, sandwiches, coffees and a few other assorted gifts. Worth a visit if anywhere in the Grantown area....or even from further away!
D. G.
Beautiful selection of yummy cakes! The pizza place next door is so good as well! Definitely worth the stop 😁 …
J. I.
Amazing quality of food, good portion sizes, and great service. Beautiful views from the dining area.
R. F.
Although packed during season it’s worth to wait a while (or make a reservation before): splendid food, fantastic taste, great experience!
p. s.
Nice views, great service with very friendly staff I had a lovely scone which I would definitely recommend
K. P.
I adore this place. The food is fresh, healthy and incredibly tasty. It is Aviemore's worst-kept secret, though, because there is always a queue for seats!
It's usually only open during the day, but the occasional evening talks are always a great night. Book ahead - your ticket will include a meal, or sometimes cake and tea/mulled wine.
S. W.
We are in the bread club and what a joy it is. I used to make bread and cakes but have become disabled so can't stand up to do so anymore, I had thought beautiful bread was a thing of the past. Tonight I have had the best sandwich ever, roast chicken and mayonnaise in cranberry, nut and honey bread, accompanied by a nice glass of Chardonnay what could be better? Thank you very much.
P. D.
Very long wait but well worth it!
Great allergy information with vegan, gluten free, dairy free, egg free, etc options. While staying in Avimore for two weeks, we ate here 3-4 times including take away and it was lovely each time. They have many options to substitute for your dietary requirements.
A. M.
O MY GOODNESS ! Foodie's paradise A must visit. Red velvet cake made for birthday celebration Divine ! Highly recommend 🙏💫 …
M. H.
Great quality food, well cooked, with good service (well, most of the time). Amazing cakes too!
Does awesome gluten free food, plus also does takeaways for those days when you’re out doing activities with the kids and need a packed lunch.
Although, two of the waitresses today seemed quite stressed out and were pretty rude to customers.
J. E.
Amazing food and coffee. Best sausage roll I've ever had, delicious and filling. And there were three kinds to choose from! Very reasonably priced considering the portion sizes too. I stop by every time I pass though Grantown on Spey.
S. M.
Amazing breakfast and the service is outstanding, we'll be back. Oh and I got an extra hash brown thrown in for free 👍 …
F. R.
This became a firm favourite for us last year due to the awesome food (interesting menu, great veggie and kids options as well as "standard" fare, and good size portions).
We were worried because there have been a few grumpy reviews (due mainly to the buzzers). All I can say is that the food, staff and view are still awesome, and the place is popular. If you visit at busy times, expect to wait! Turn up a bit early and chances are the wait will be shorter or not at all! Definitely try it though.
S. P.
Visited this wonderful place last summer. It was (understandably) busy and we had to wait for a table, but this is well managed with a buzzer system that allows you to wander down the high street whilst waiting, so it wasn't a problem. So many delicious sounding options on the menu that I had trouble deciding! Delicious, excellent quality food, great service and lovely views. Looking forward to returning in the future.
J. G.
Popped into KJs for a lunchtime snack during a holiday drive. Both the pork and beef sausage rolls were super tasty (veggie options too)l! The sandwiches, soup and cakes also looked ace. If we were staying locally would be no.1 choice for bread and for hill walking packed lunch!
P. W.
Absolutely fabulous! Great service and wonderful food and drink. A must for any foodie!!!
P. B.
I stumbled across the Mountain Cafe after a quick search for places to eat with vegan options. I was not disappointed at all! I had the vegan breakfast coupled with their beetroot latte and both were simply stunning! I’d highly recommend for vegans and non-vegans alike; great, fresh homemade food, nice atmosphere and friendly, helpful staff!
M. H.
Had some amazing food here, probably the best burger and chips I've ever had! The quality of the beef burger was excellent and the garnishes were perfect. The chips were really crispy and the wee salad on the side was refreshing. My wife has the halloumi flat bread, which was also excellent. The range and quality of the cakes is amazing. I didn't have a coffee but if smelled amazing. We'll definitely visit again when we're back in Aviemore.
J. H.
Superb bakery with so many amazing and original offerings. Great coffee too, and lovely people serving. Not to be missed if you're nearby and we went out of our way on our way back down through Scotland for another visit there. Thank you all.
S.
Really Nice staff, very friendly. The muffins are really good and the biscoff brownie was incredible. They have a dog bowl and allow them in the store on a lead. Would definitely recommend
L. S.
Great tasty sweet treats and the bread, so many choices. Do your taste buds a favour. The service and banter are brilliant too!
R. N.
We adored this place. Though we were only in Aviemore for 36 hours we came back twice! Atmosphere was warm, trendy, and very cozy. We received great, friendly service. Food was sublime, bought the cookbook as we won't be able to visit again soon. Highly recommend the strawberry rhubarb porridge and the vegetarian full Scottish. Also the Turmeric latte! Our kids loved it too.
A. M.
First visit here, but won't be the last - same tremendous baking that you could get at the (much missed) Mountain Cafe in Aviemore. Great coffee & numerous freshly made sandwiches/savoury snacks, as well as the baking. Well worth a detour off the A9! They even grow the herbs that are used onsite....
D. M.
Great quality food, good selection for adults and children. Children’s food in particular was excellent, rather than the usual sausages or nuggets options they have a great range to keep most kids happy. Other cafe owners should look at this place to see how it's done.
It’s usually very busy here so they have introduced a pager system where they give you a pager so you will know when you table is ready. The best thing is that you can actually go outside and wander the nearby shops as it has quite a range.
C. O.
If you coming to Scotland for the views, you will not be disappointed.
If you have experienced the area while passing by or staying over, you no doubt had a great time.
But if you didn't visit the Mountain Café before you left, you didn't get everything from your trip.
The service, eating area and atmosphere are second to none. The food is world class, with fresh ingredients and the most delicious flavors.
Thank you for making the entire trip worthwhile! And for the amazing food.
b. A.
Most beautiful cafe I've ever been. I went 2 years ago and always wanted to go back since. The food is so delicious and fresh. The staff are lovely and friendly can't do enough for you. Can't wait till I return back to the Highlands to come again.
J. M.
We enjoyed a lovely late lunch here yesterday. We sat outside on the balcony looking over the Cairngorms - it was glorious! The food was amazing - I had the sweetcorn fritters, hubby had the special and our son enjoyed a generous meal from the kids menu. These were followed by huge slices (We're on holiday!) of the most delicious cakes ever!! The staff were fantastic - couldn't do enough for you and so friendly and considering it was one of the hottest days on record, this speaks volumes! If you're in the Aviemore area I strongly urge you to try the Mountain Cafe you won't be disappointed!
A. A.
Absolutely superb food! The cafe is continually in demand so aim for off peak times or be happy collecting a buzzer to let you know when your table is free. There's a wait for a reason and it is well worth it. The mains are super but also plan in coffee and cake, either in the same or as separate visits. The cakes and bakes are not to be missed!!!
K. M.
Love this cafe! Fantastic food, coffee and cake. Very friendly staff. You have to try the Humming Bird cake, it is excellent! Very popular and there is sometimes a queue for tables but they have a buzzer system which works as far away as Tesco. It also allows you to browse the outdoor shop downstairs.
S. B.
There aren't loads, but certainly enough vegan options to merit a high rating. The food quality here is EXCEPTIONAL, and is created by a very highly rated chef. I had the all day breakfast, expecting the sausages to be typical shop-bought, instead they were these beautiful home made cutlets. My wife's falafel and tabbouleh sandwich was an absolute beast, with a zesty flavour.
Lovely and knowledgeable staff, know what's vegan, Food is exceptional and home made, Very well labelled, vegan things are noted on menu
D. B.
Victim of its own success as its so often very busy. Don't be surprised if you have to wait for a table. Food is generally excellent quality, and generous portions. Good coffee too but avoid the Afghan biscuits.
Update to review: Cake portions are huge. Coffee is excellent. Since its so busy, service isn't as prompt as one would like. They really need more waiting staff.
H. L.
Fantastic cafe, with fabulous food served in an unusual way. Lovely staff. You can buy fresh bread, scones & cake. They do a carryout service too. Scenery from cafe is fantastic. Went 3 times in six days that we stayed in Aviemore. Big portions so go hungry. Loved it.
J. B.
Great menu whatever your food preference. I am vegan and had lots to choose from.
The presentation of the food is beautiful and it tastes fab. The Cafe is upstairs in a very pleasant building with stunning views over the Cairngorm mountain range and the staff presented themselves as friendly, knowledgeable and professional.
Overall, this is my favourite place to eat in the UK - the only bad thing is that it's around 500 miles away from where I live!!
Pros: Many nice vegan options, Meat, non-meat, gluten free options, Fantastic location with stunning views
Cons: May need to wait for a table - but it's definitely worth the wait!
E. M.
The best breakfast we’ve ever had , fantastic quality, already planning a return visit
R. D.
I bought one of every cake on offer and they were all great. The savoury offerings were good too! They are very popular, we waited an hour for a table, they have an electronic buzzer system so we wandered around some nearby shops and that was acceptable.
E. M.
The most delicious breakfast I have ever tasted, hands down. Amazing views, colouring for kids, everything you could want! Very efficient queuing system as well, and I don't mind waiting for food this fresh. Tropical twist to the menu is different!
K. D.
Lovely place. Good coffee, cakes and the fish chowder is really great. Great views of the mountains, too. My favourite part about it is that they could just easily kick back and deliver mediocrity seeing as they have a captive audience of visitors, but fortunately, this isn't London. Keep on being lovely!
F. S.
Great service and amazing food.
We took the pancakes with banana and berries, the plain porridge and the all day brekkie, everything was great, the first and the second were amazing together, the sauce of the pancakes completed perfectly the porridge. The brekkie was huge and tasty, with a perfectly cooked egg and great bread... I’m just sad I didn’t have more space to try their cakes
N. L.
Went to pick up some cakes and bread we had ordered before the lockdown. It was worth the wait. I wish I had a place as amazing as this local to me in Glasgow. You folk in Granton On Spey are so lucky!!
B.
The famous Mountain Cafe certainly lives up to its reputation in terms of the range and quality of the cakes served there. The portions are generous and can quite easily feed two! There are at least fifteen different types of cake served there at any one time with lots of unusual flavours (a particular favourite of mine was a ginger and pistachio slice). It is often busy though so it may be worth avoiding peak times.
K. S.
The most incredible food and coffee!
The food is bursting with flavour which tastes all the better knowing it's locally sourced. The banana bread on the summer breakfast menu is the best thing I ever have or will eat.
Their steamed milk is always silky and smooth and it makes me grudge buying coffee anywhere else- ever!
Also the recipe book is worth a buy- it was my first introduction to proper cooking and baking.
M. M.
Simply delicious, in the 3 days we've been in Aviemore, we went 3 times to this restaurant. Not shy to say that it's the best restaurant we've tried in Scotland. Beautiful view, fancy quality delicious food and good service!
D. T.
Quite expensive, but good quality café/bakery
M. J.
More of a restaurant than a cafe. Don’t come here expecting a simple lunch option. Pricey too. Waited to be seated for a good while to then see the menu. Since we had waited we decided to stay. I asked for a cream tea and asked if I could swap the tea for a coffee. I was told no. Oh well!
I’m sure the food is lovely but it’s definitely not a cafe!
C. Z. O.
Don't make it up here often enough these days, but when we do it's worth the short wait on the stairs to get a table. Beautiful tasty food, often locally sourced and an award winning chef to boot. However ordinary the menu may look at a first glance, you always end up having your taste buds tickled.
To anyone who says otherwise, I'd love to see where you've had that quality and portion size for that price and give it a try.
T. H.
Best lunch I've had in ages. Well worth the wait. Menu was great with so much invention and information on vegan, gluten free meals. This is the way forward for cafés and restaurants. Took a vegan friend for lunch and she was spoilt for choice. I applaud you and your friendly staff. Will certainly be back
C. H.
Stopped here for a bite to eat with friends whilst on a motorbike run. It was so busy we had to get a pocket buzzer that allowed the staff to buzz us when a table was free. This is a great idea as it lets you wander about the town but fully aware that you will get a table. The menu is good, its varied and when our food arrived it was clearly homemade, fresh and well cooked. It was also delicious which helps. Staff could not have been nicer, the mix of guests was varied and the location (on top of the mountain shop) perfect as you are totally unaware of road, traffic or pedestrian noise down below. Being in a popular tourist route the only down side (minus the star) is the pricing which we found slightly higher than expected however it would not put us off returning.
L. D.
Stopped in for some lovely home baking and coffee with my family, it was delicious and the cakes were huge!!! Will hopefully return to sample the lunch menu. Highly recommend. Also instead of queueing you get a buzzer and can still go outside to other places while you wait
C. G.
Possibly the best cafe in the world! Heavenly food. Very very good customer care. I love my coffee and their long black was just perfect, ordered halloumi flatbread which was outstanding and about to choose a cake which will be a hard choice as many gorgeous ones to choose! Can't wait to come back.
T.
A rare 5 star rating. Unbeatable breakfast.
J. H.
Excellent and imaginative food but spoiled by a long wait to get a table. Then we were told we had to wait 25 mins for food. I ordered the Mac and Cheese. I thought I had ordered a cheeseburger. It was actually a very delicious macaroni cheese! Obviously a kiwi description that did not translate across very obviously. Cakes were delicious too.
D. P.
Definitely worth a visit, their cakes are all home made and they have a wonderful variety. Very popular and busy so has a good vibe, might need to wait for a table but they've got pagers to alert you when your table is ready. I'll definitely be back the next time I'm here!
R. A.
Read some good reviews and thought we'd give it a try during our stay in Aviemore.
Went in to find the cafe very busy but we were given a buzzer that we could take away a short distance that would let us know when our table was ready.
At first glance at the menu we found the prices quite high but after the coffee and food arrived realised the quality in the food and drink.
Coffees were probably the best we have had in Aviemore, very strong and they also offered alternatives to dairy milks.
We had the lasagne and the beef burger which were both amazing, the quality really showed when the food arrived. The menu is very adaptable as well, they can change some dishes for anyone veggie, gluten free, etc.
Definitely a place to check out if you are a fussy eater or have dietary requirements! Also has great views of the mountains.
P. H.
Love mountain cafe. Well worth the detour on the road up to Inverness. Cake is some of the best I've ever had and I love the range of options to suit all dietary requirements- their menu is actually colour coded. Cannot recommend enough!!!
P. S.
Been here many times. Food, drinks, service and e environment are all excellent. One of the best places to eat in Aviemore. It can get very busy, so you might have to wait a bit!
P. C.
Wow! What an amazing vegan all day breakfast! Super generous portion with an amazing tasting rosti. A cut above any other vegan brekkie I've ever had and staff were super friendly too - despite me not noticing until afterwards the wait to be seated sign and plonking myself down at the the prime window seat :-).
C. W.
We visited the cafe for the first time. The food was really tasty. It's a bit different but really really good quality food. Loved the Thai noodle soup with a soft cream and chive scone(i think it was)! It was amazing.
j. P.
We had the flat bread and fish cakes which were delicous. There are some great views and the staff are very friendly. It's a very busy cafe so do expect a wee wait before being seated. However, the new buzzer system means you can go for a wonder while yo wait.
C. A. H.
You better come here early for breakfast because it gets busy fast. Wonder why? Because the food is amazing and everyone wants a piece! The staff are so friendly and accomodating and the food has the greastest presentation. Deffo get the pancakes if you want an experience. It's a lil pricier than what you will find in the area, but it's so worth it for the perfect food and the most stunning sunrise over the mountains.
V. R.
Very well deserving of the 2017 Scottish Food Awards winning title. The menu is superb for those with allergies or intolerances, clearly indicating gluten, wheat, dairy free, as well as vegan and vegetarian. There is plenty to choose from, including soup, sandwiches, hot meals, cakes and salads. There are alternative milks available - soya and oat, although there is a 50p supplement for some items. Be prepared to go early in the day, or to wait, as it's very popular. There's a buzzer system in place where you can take a device and go shopping elsewhere while waiting for the buzzer to go off. It has quite a good range so we went to the supermarket. Staff are very friendly and knowledgeable and went out of their way to help with food choices. We diverted into Aviemore to visit this cafe and it's well worth it. Their website has copies of menus so it's easy to see in advance what you could select, and there are additional specials available when you arrive. Dogs are not allowed in. Note that the car park can get full but the car park across the road is only 60p for up to 4 hours. The cafe is above a nice independent outdoor shop too, so there's plenty to look at.
G. G.
A must after a long walk or day out. the raclette is absolutely amazing, and the cakes are to die for. The sandwiches are huge and the coffee is delicious, just what you need to fuel a drive back home! If you can try to get a table by the windows for the fantastic views!
J. R.
Swung by for a super quick snack on our way down the road. The savoury scones-cheddar, asparagus and slow roast tomato-were divine and the banana and caramel cake delicious without being oversweet. Genuinely my favourite cafe!
L. M.
Great ambience, nice buzz, healthy freshly prepared food but made to order and often have to queue to get in for 30 mins which is a drawback with kids or elderly folks. Good selection for dietary requirements. Good views and log stove.
P. K.
Fine foods but some issues
Aviemore's Mountain Cafe is without doubt the place in the village where visitors will get the most contemporary food. Expect to get interesting flavour combinations. We have had their incredible Winter Salad - great stuff! We have had their Fish Cakes, too. They were very tasty, too, although the salad which came with the cakes was lacking much dressing and therefore rather dry.
Most of their cakes are really delicious (we tried several of them). For those with a sweet tooth I cannot recommend this place enough as the choice of cakes is plentyfull and unusuall in the best sense.
Staff is very relaxed and friendly.
So you might ask: Why only three of five stars then?
Well, there is their coffee. It doesn't have the quality the food has. Their coffee might work in combination with milk (but even then it's nothing exceptional) but once you have it on its own (e. g. as an espresso) you realize that this is a roast I wouldn't travel for...
Then there is their price policy: A piece of Carrot Cake for FOUR pounds? French Toast for 12 pounds?! (OK, it's ladden with fruit and yummy sauce but still: it's breakfast...) They might think: If our customers are willing to pay these prices, why not ask for them? I think: It's a question of fairness towards those folks who keep a place like this busy. Aviemore still is in rural Scotland and not in Mayfair.
I consider these prices even more over the top considering that this isn't an organic place at all.
Then there is the fact that people more than rarely will have to wait for ages for a table - expect an hour at week-ends. They don't take reservations so it's likely to be a highly frustrating business to get in there. (If you aim for a relaxed - and better coffee - the 15 minutes drive to Nethy Bridge might get you a quicker fix of coffein than hanging around outside the Mountain Cafe...)
And finally it's the fact that their menue doesn't really consider the seasons: Plums on French Toast in January? Blueberries with pancakes in winter? Either these things have traveled around half of the world to get them on my plate or they are frozen. I don't like neither.
J. D.
A gem. Iocated upstairs above the outdoor clothing shoo. Great food but very hard to get in. Booking strongly advised. I wouldn't use the ground floor shop as you can get many identical products for far less just next door.
But do book the cafe. Well recommended.

Nice place, good food and coffee.
A. V.
We didn’t eat here but the menu and atmosphere look great. It’s somewhere you would go after a long cold day in the mountains or before you start the day. All we had was a takeaway coffee and the its was a good cuppa!
A. W.
Wowzer was how the all day breakfast was described when placed in front of my daughter and the rest of the meal was to the same high standard.
Have visited a few times and the staff couldn't be more helpful and friendly.
A new buzzer system means you no longer have to queue on the staircase a bonus if you want to have a wee wander.
Excellent guys keep it up
J. T.
Got some takeaway sandwiches and cakes with my colleague on the way home from Inverness. Wow! The food was amazing. Highly recommend this cafe of you are looking for quality food. A tab expensive but the cake made up for that :)
E. G.
A very popular café and it is obvious why once you have dined here. The cafe is a small casual establishment with historical mountain equipment adorning the walls. It is very light and airy.
The menu is short but the food is amazing. I had the halloumi flat bread and it was absolutely delicious. They have a little shop area selling cakes that you can take away.
They had paper and crayons and highchairs for little ones and a child's menu.
I would definitely recommend.
A. B.
as a vege and my wife has food allergies this place is great as it breaks the menu down.
Have been on 4/5 seperate occasions and the queue to get in is testement to how good the place is.
Took a friend in September and he loved it as well, well be visiting at least 2/3 times again this year.
Oh...and my wife and I have travelled 3.5hrs to go for lunch. Yes we like it that much.
D. J.
Ok. So it's wise to book in advance here.
When I first looked at the menu I thought it was a bit pricey!
Until the food is infront of you and in your mouth. Turns out the food was plentiful, full of flavour and worth the money.
Friendly staff and good service
L. P.
We stopped off here for some takeaway goodies for the drive home. There's an amazing selection of homebaking treats. I opted for the carrot and zucchini cake which was beautifully moist and flavourful. They also have a great selection of Eteaket teas (a tea boutique from Edinburgh). It can sometimes queue out the door but if you are looking for a takeaway only just bypass the queue and head in upstairs through the shop.
M.
Great fresh produce, would definitely visit again.
M. B.
Have been here many times over the years and enjoyed the great veggie and vegan choices, particularly the breakfast, but the big thing for us, ad retired baristas, is the amazing coffee. The long black is just soooooo good ☕
A. S.
Absolutely amazing food and fast service highly recommend ❤️
D. H.
The cake selection was fantastic and the quality superb but the service was appalling. Had to wait an age to order then a long wait again for our drinks. Would return but the table service concept only works in a cafe if you can match it with service levels.
J. J.
Very friendly staff, nice atmoshpere, high quality coffee and good service.
N. T.
Best place to eat in Aviemore but a bit annoyed that they advertise on their website that they are open until 5pm but make no mention of the kitchen closing at 4pm. We spent the day in Aviemore with family before arriving at the cafe at 3.30pm for a meal. We were advised that we were too late to be served anything other than cake and coffee as there was a half hour wait for a table and the kitchen would close at 4pm. If we’d known this we could easily have arrived earlier.
V. S.
Always delicious food & incredible cakes. Menu not as extensive as I remember it from January 2019
No all day breakfast offered on this visit. 😟
Staff Efficient and friendly. …
S. C.
Food is great but you are looking at a long wait for a table - they'll give you a buzzer so you can go and wander around the local shops. Staff very pleasant despite busyness. Possibly the best millionaire's shortbread anywhere
C. B.
Great place to buy wonderful baked produce as well as a good variety of biscuits, preserves and some gift ideas. Tremendous variety and yumee tasting quiches.
T. R.
All I can say is.... well worth the money!!!
D. M.
First visit, and it was excellent. Full brekkie for myself, veggie brekkie for my wife, generous portions and each really succulent. Staff are friendly, service is superb. Recommended.
M.
Best veggie breakfast for miles and miles around!
Great staff, great coffee, great food and great views from the terrace.
Always busy and rightly so, the food is second to none and the staff are lovely.
B. K.
The usual great quality food and cakes but the atmosphere is somewhat lacking and the seating area could do with a make over. Would probably be better suited to a dedicated premises rather than above the outdoor clothing shop as it's clearly the star attraction here!
C. B.
Normally a great highlight on any trip to Aviemore, it might be becoming a victim of its own success. There was the usual wait, now with a radio buzzer, which took about 30mins, but once we were in, it was a full 50mins before we got out food.
Food was great, but not amazing and maybe not worth the wait and the prices.
I hope this was just a blip.
M. S.
Amazing cafe! Lovely, quaint spot which seemed to get quite busy around lunchtime, but I can totally understand why. The menu has lots of variety, with a twist on traditional meals, and the outcome is fantastic! The food is well-cooked and so flavourful. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. 10/10, would recommended this to anybody staying in Aviemore and the surrounding area as it is well worth a visit! 😊🤩
C. L.
Really nice cake and coffee, always busy as it is so popular but unfortunately it can take a while for even just a coffee to come. Great for a relaxed spot of tea and cakes if you aren't in a rush.
S. O.
We walked in at 9:30am on a Sunday morning. After a 40 minute wait (the only reason for only four stars), which is managed well with a buzzer system so you can walk around the downstairs shop and even along the street, we were treated to a brilliant menu and very tasty breakfast. The coffee was very good and on the stronger side. Lots of gluten free options available.
P. B.
Thanks for the best Humming Bird cake ever. It was a great treat for my 50th Birthday with family.
B. D.
Fabulous hidden gem above an outdoor store. Great views of the Cairngorms, super friendly staff, and the best breakfasts we’ve had in weeks of traveling throughout the UK. Highly recommend!
A.
Burger 🍔, if you’re hungry that’s for you. Tasty. …
K. M.
The good is lovely but you can't book and it's always far too busy, you can never get a table. We've travelled 2 hours just to go on few occasions and have always been let down with wait times.
F. U.
Was initially put off by the £11 full breakfast but quickly realised it's the best breakfast in Aviemore, we'll worth the extra few quid. Nice atmosphere and lovely staff.
J. G.
Fantastic food, good value.
On the surface seems expensive for breakfast but the portions are very generous and the food delicious.
All day veggie breakfast and gingerbread granola spot on.
Upstairs from outdoor shop which is nice to look around.
Always busy so prepare to have to wait for a table (30 minutes ish usually and they have a buzzer system)
Great for veggies/vegans too.
P. N.
Attractive pricing, excellently served and presented food, great coffee! We really enjoyed full english breakefest in there! Staff super polite !
Thank You.
S. G.
A great wee treat just outside of Aviemore! Recommend the babka! Delicious coffee
C. H.
Love this place. A great variety of products.
W.
The Donut was the best food I have ever tasted
T. P.
Long wait for a table but worth it. Good service. Best salad I've had in ages. Not cheap at £10 for salmon flakes on salad large bed. I'd go again.
J. S.
Fantastic place to eat, food is amazing every time. Staff really friendly. All Cafes should be made this way
F. F.
Excellent food and service, props to the Kiwi lady behind it all 👌🏼 …
R. F.
Food is good although quite expensive. Nice views and staff were friendly and helpful. They have a good system for waiting for tables where they give you a buzzer with enough range to go explore some of the local shops while you wait. I think they should give the buzzers out at the bottom of the steps though as there was congestion just waiting for the buzzer! Gluten free options and coffee were good. Main detraction is the Cafe is quite loud and it's hard to hold a conversation. If there was a way for them to dampen it acoustically that would help
S. H.
Most delicious scones and home made jam!! Great service too 😊 …
S. M.
Delicious food and friendly staff. Much better now they have the buzzer system for waiting for a table rather than waiting on the stairs. Their cakes are out of this world!
A. K.
Lovely food, excellent service and nice atmosphere in the restaurant too. I bought their recipe book, which is full of tasty NZ-inspired dishes.
I. T.
Very good food. Had the veggie breakfast and was perfect. Much better than the bog standard ones you get everywhere else.
b. q.
Amazing little bakery, well worth going out of your way to stop in. Dog friendly with a home made dog treat for every dog!
S. M.
Great place to eat in spite of having to wait for a table. Fantastic soups with their own homemade bread. For those with a sweet tooth, lots of lovely baking.
S. W.
Not been here in a while, but great to see that the food has remained as good as ever. The eggs are so tasty, excellent coffee and, of course, their cake range is one of the absolute best.
Please never change!!
D. C.
Amazing place. Great cake, great food, superb staff and an amazing view. Be prepared to wait for a table. It's that popular!
s. g.
Amazing food and cake and the staff are so attentive.the place gets really busy so turn up 30 min's to an hour before you want to be seated as you will get a buzzer to let you know once they have a table free for you so you can wonder around the shops in the mean time
C. D.
Fantastic place! Great food that has imagination. It's always a treat to go the the Mountain Cafe. Lovely cozy atmosphere.
A. C.
Good menu range for vegetarians. Excellent service, good tastes and flavours. I liked the fennel seeded potato rodti in the all day vegetarian breakfast..
C. K.
Great views, busy place there is often a wait. Food was good, staff (except one smiley lady with ginger hair) were not at all friendly which was a big shame
A. C.
Very friendly, food is so so good, recommend anyone that's in the area to go there. Just keep in mind you will have to wait for a table. It will be worth waiting though!
V. X.
Best sourdough bread for miles! Well worth a visit if driving by.
N. M.
Expensive and you'll probably need to wait but completely worth it!
E. L.
Culinary awesomeness, just off the A95 outside Granton
A. B.
Amazing sandwiches and cake . Lovely friendly and helpful staff. Excellent dog biscuits too !!
G. J.
Fantastic food and options for people with special dietary needs. Very busy so we had to wait for a table but we'll worth the wait!
G. M.
Must have been the most expensive breakfast I ever had but it was good.
F. T.
Plenty of choice, also for people with intolerances such as gluten, nuts and dairy. Very friendly staff and nice atmosphere. Would recommend this for visitors to Aviemore.
J. D.
I once described Jay jays cafe near great Yarmouth as the greatest cafe in the universe... I'm sorry, but I lied, THIS cafe is the best in the universe. The service, food and staff are all first class, everyone there has the perfect qualities to be a waitress, if you have one complain about this place, go see a doctor
G. M.
Excellent coffees and cakes. Grand views of the Northern Corries to boot. So good food, good cakes with views of the mountains, what's there not to like!
C. F.
Cakes are out of this world! Phenomenal cheesecake and marshmallows as well...
B. S.
A tad expensive for some items but very much worth it. Great cakes and the sandwiches are really good too.
S. L.
Been coming here for years; sublime cake and good strong coffee. Well worth the wait for a table every time
R. Y.
Really friendly and funny staff, food is good quality, coffee and cakes are great! Also kind nifty view from the top of the cafe.
E. C.
SO GOOOOOOOOD. Worth the wait. Worth the drive. We randomly wandered in after our hike in the park and were treated to a fantastic lunch.
A. M.
Bakes are delicious and they have a great selection of local produce.
K. B.
Fantastic spot for some lunch or coffee and cake. Good wervice despite being very busy on an Easter Sunday afternoon. Chef puts a deliscous twist on the lunch menu options, we had a blue cheese, poached pear and pomegranate salad and a harrisa falafel burger with a delicious carrot salad. A must-visit if you find yourself in Aviemore. We are already looking forward to going again
v. h.
A busy cafe but worth the wait. Had falfel sandwich for lots of trimmings. Husband had gluten free ham cheese and chutney.
A. O.
Cafe that serves excellent coffee and cakes, as well as a number of heartier dishes. It's upstairs and there's often a wait on the stairs to get in, but it's well worth it.
T. M.
We stopped here on the way through to Ft William for a coffee and had to have some of the amazing looking cakes , the coffee cake was fabulous and with a well made flat white this place hit the spot , prices were good and service was friendly and quick , definitely somewhere to come back to when back in Aviemore.
N. O.
So many cakes to choose from. Great coffee. Even better views.
Shop below and cafe and have lovely staff.
Stop and have a break here.
G. P.
The beef burger was amazing, and so was the milkshake. Friendly staff and great atmosphere topped it off, would recommend to everyone
M. E.
Good comfortable place to eat. Great menu, a bit expensive but, that doesn't prevent it being very popular
r. c.
It's seemed to always be packed but easily had the best coffee in Aviemore. Did a fantastic breakfast as well
G. R.
Great coffee and cakes and lovely view
N. F.
Me and my Friend came here although quite busy we got through the que quickly the wait was paid off by the excellent food we received. The staff are extremely friendly and give a great service
J. M.
Terrific food, fabulous cakes!, happy staff, best view of Cairngorms in Aviemore plus, top notch outdoor shop downstairs. Perfect 👌 …
H. F.

J. D.
One of the best all day breakfasts we'd ever had. Wonderfully stodgey but with a fantastic attention to detail!
M. G.
Amazing food. Good portion sizes make sure you leave space for the excellent cakes
M. S. C.
Great selection of cakes and best views of any cafe in Highlands. Very popular may have to wait for a table, but worth the wait
E. C.
Great place for food . Lots of choice .
You need to get there early for a table but wait isn't usually that bad.
M. B.
Fish soup was so complex and special. Brilliant view of Cairngorms whilst enjoying a coffee from v. large selection
K. M.
Been here many times over the years and have never been disappointed. Very glad to see they have a new digital queuing system which prevents patrons being forced to wait on the stairs.
J. M.
Just wow. If you haven't been go. It's not the cheapest place but the quality of food is so good it is definitely the best value for money in Aviemore.
M. C.
Some awersome food with spectacular views of Cairngormes. Can get very busy but booking system excellent. Pancakes mouthwatering good. 🤩 …
