Reviews of E5 Bakehouse
S. K.
I’m definitely going to visit here again!
Such an authentic bakery with a very nice ambience, both inside and outside.
F. G.
Looking for bakery pastry stores around East London and this seemed to be rated high for freshly baked bread and delicious pastries. I went for a Danish pastry although can’t remember the name of it but this really tasted great. The coffee was slightly blend and wasn’t as good as some other cafes around the area. Overall it’s a good place for fresh bread and some nice pastries.
D. S.
Mushroom pie out of control, pastries all delicious. Only giving four stars because they weren’t serving coffee.
L. C.
was in the area and stopped to buy their hackney white sourdough loaf. liked the "sourness" taste, but not so much the fact that the bread has almost no crust and it's rather "wet" and doughy. .
C. C.
Got their multi seeded sourdough. Good quality bread, but don't expect much service. Was turned down curtly when asked if they provided slicing service. Pain au Chocolat was good but not stand out.
A. D.
This place really is rather good. Almond 🥐 was still warm in the middle, and the espresso was just right 👌🏻
C. B.
Good coffee, great pastries. Shame the staff are a bit rude/aloof. Made it seem like they were doing us a favour by serving us. Also, they don't have tomato sauce and acted offended when we asked for it.
S. M.
Great coffee, bread and everything but service is slower than treacle and borderline rude. 10-15min at times to make a flat white to the point that it’s can feel like someone is pranking you…
F. R.
Probably one of my favourite bakeries in London. You can clearly taste the quality of the produce in everything they make, my go-to is their Hackney Wild which is always spot on! Can also recommend grabbing a pastry and sit in the backyard.
C. C.
Cozy bakery-cafe. They have a very good choice of baked breads, cakes and sweets. They also have a good choice of vegan sweets. The coffe wasn’t so good for my taste. The atmosphere is very cozy and friendly. The staff is very welcoming and helpful.
I couldn’t see any toilets inside.

At Artisan Bakery under East London's railways arches. This place has set the bar high as far as bread and pastry goes. Their sourdough loaves are phenominal, freshly baked throughout the morning and afternoon (due to demand). The pastry are to rave about, my preferences are in the following order: Cardamon Bun (easilly the winner, however, disappointingly the cardamon flavour has gotten weaker over the last year or so, please go back to the original recipe), Almond Pain Au Chocolat (a blend of my two favourite traditional pastries) and Cinamon Bun.
They also serve brunches/ lunches - their halloumi bun is one of my favourites. Their coffee is also decent.
There is always a queue outside. I highly recommend using their online order form to secure a collection, in which case you can join the collection queue which is generally a lot shorter. I could not recommend more!
J. B.
The best sourdough I’ve had in London, really high quality food - produced right at their bake house
A. B.
Delicious bread...Great coffee...
E. L.
Amazing brunch menu! The mushroom on toast is delicious, I’ve ordered extra 2 eggs and they gave me one more egg!
The soft boiled eggs are perfectly done!
There is more space at the back.
S. M.
Did a sour dough bread course with them, it was amazing. Money well spent. And their rosemary and raspberry jam is SO good!!! And they fed us very well during our day course... which is always a bonus
A. A.
Wonderful place hidden away in the Hackney area - very much in keeping with the changes in the area. Definitely worth the visit for coffee or lunch, but be warned - if you're a meat eater this place isn't for you. And definitely try the "pizzas"
J. E.
The bread and pastries here are excellent. The chocolate salted rye cookie and the choux buns you have to try. And the seeded sourdough! It's in a railway arch - expanded into two now. A very chilled place to work from. The coffee is excellent, too.
C. S.
Ordered two breakfast buns, which I thought was pricy for the amount of ingredients you get- an egg, not much caramelised onions, One/two leaf of veg between a sliced bun (Which was a little tough on the outside) for £6, just slapped together, its saving grace was that it was tasty due to the caramelised onions. Walnut cake was just alright but overly sweet. Cool thing was the huge open kitchen and baking space to churn out baked goods, but limited seating space for customers. It is a decent bakery/cafe but I feel it is quite overhyped.
A. B.
Had the best lunch of my life today, fresh moist sourdough with pickles and cheese, and a gorgeous soup with cream. My partner had the same, sandwich and a lovely coffee, all for under 20 pounds. Seems like such a steal for the quality of food. Love you E5!!!
O. P.
Spacious, pleasant clientele, blankets for the outdoor tables, and oh so many delicious treats to choose from.
K. M.
Worth the vist.
I came from Australia to see and try this beautiful bakery.
Bread was full of flavour and crumb was amazing.
Cookies were a great snack.
Coffee was also nice.
I was super excited to see the mill in store. I hope to see it working next time.
I'll be back very often
J. C.
A popular local bakery with tasty handmade pastry.
Love its brunch and cinnamon roll.
You can also try various handmade jam in the bakery.
The flavor of the jam is quite special.
D. K.
Really phenomenal bread and a helpful friendly staff. They helped me understand the differences between the breads they offered. I chose the multigrain and Hackney Wild. Both are delicious. Perfect with soup or with peanut butter and jelly. I highly recommend their breads!
T.
Fantastic bakery with lots on offer.
Service was quick for my collection order, despite quite a large queue for non-collection items.
Highly recommended to pre-book early in the morning though, to avoid disappointment!
N. C.
One of the best pain au chocolats I've ever had. Nice spelt dough gave it some great personality. The gallete and the goat curd toast are also amazing. The staff is friendly and inviting!
A. K.
Healthiest restaurant in the world. Best coffee. A serious place. Real organic. Great staff. Thank you.
R. O.
Their own coffee milling section is amazing and they have a good sourdough bread as well. We ordered the Hackney wild!
A. S.
This place is a gem! They make their baguettes ever single day and if you’re not early they usually sell out, which pretty much speaks for itself. Dine in atmosphere is also super nice, lots of natural light, you get see people making bread and they’ve got a nice patio tucked away in the back. Everything is delicious! Have been there a few times now and haven’t been disappointed yet!
M. C.
Great bread and pastries. Nice cafe, bohemian atmosphere. Worth the travel to check it out
I. S.
Small place with tasty pastries. It was really crowded on Sunday morning though
P. J.
What a lovely place. Friendly staff, the seating is in the middle of the work area so feels immersive. Lentil soup was delicious! Lightly sweet and light in body. Coffee was rich and the brownie has a strong cocoa flavour.
A. F.
E5 is a great bakery - sourdough here is king, as well as housemade jams and chocolate. The breakfast and lunch menus are varied with varied options. They offer courses - the pizza making class is great fun. The shop stock any sort of organic flour and bread making accessories.
Y.
It’s good mood, friendly staff, sooo delicious bread. It was the most delicious bread i’ve ever eaten!
A. R.
e5 is the spot in London Fields, dynamite coffee and food with art, events and a general good vibe. I've been lots and it's always great.
W. D.
Great coffee and a delicious croissant. Lovely service by the man in the yellow top!
R. K. (.
New neighbourhood, new baker, and what a baker. I've heard about E5 even before moving here, and oh my, after having tried their croissants, pains au chocolat and Wholemeal bread, they deserve their reputation. No doubt.
Staff is super friendly & sitting here sipping a capuccino watching those guys work at the back could really become a habit. Looking forward to taste their 7£ pizzas, baked every sunday...oh, and they organise classes!
B. B.
Absolutely delicious. The apple cake was outstanding!
J. E.
The bread and pastries here are excellent. The chocolate salted rye cookie and the choux buns you have to try. And the seeded sourdough! It's in a railway arch - expanded into two now. A very chilled place to work from. The coffee is excellent, too.
R.
Great coffee, cinnamon rolls and banana bread....so much else I need to try!
S. w.
The bread is always amazing, we had lunch there and the food they served is so fresh and tasty and good. The aïoli tortilla and cheddar toasty were both incredible and the back garden is quite cute 😊
C. J.
Great selection of cakes and pastries and the bread is ✨
H.
E5's focus on ingredients shines through in their pizza. Bloody amazing!!! The dough is not traditional... But of course being a bakehouse... fantastic
M. M.
The sourdough course has made me a very happy baker. Huge thanks to Luke for a brilliant class. Come away with skills for life
R. C.
E5 is a very unique Bakery.
G. B.
Excellent and dog friendly.
Y. Y.
Lovely place with healthy food

Great coffee, cinnamon rolls and banana bread....so much else I need to try!
A. J. B.
A wide variety of baked goods. I had lemon drizzle pound cake and chocolate croissant. Sooo good! It was worth every penny.
T. R.
Food and bread is always good. The service times are atrocious. 25 minutes for a vegan porridge, hot water in oats, come on guys.
Other than that no other problems.
V. L.
E5 has the best bread in the world, period. To be fair, works against them, I have to avoid it as I almost eat the entire loaf in one sitting as soon as I get home.
They should be called 'crack' bread. They probably have old druid wizards baking it, it's magical.
C. V.
E5 is just the best bakery in London hands down. The Stockholm sourdough is my favourite currently but they're all extraordinary. Also, their brunch is authentic, cheap, quick. They sell plenty of other cool stuff like local cheese and flour, kitchen tools,... Their coffee is worth the trip just by itself so I guess that's way enough reasons to visit London Fields.
B. X.
Loved the industrial vibes here and the variety of breads!
s.
Well known for sourdoughs but the others are good as well.
S. S.
Bread is good ... customer service ... unhurried at best ....could try harder
B. S.
This place is so peaceful and has such a good vibe. Their jams, bread, desserts, and sandwiches are all homemade. This is my go to place after work and before a yoga class. My boyfriend is Portuguese and he LOVES their bread (so that is saying something and is definitely a compliment!). The staff is always so friendly and sweet as well. They have a beautiful garden outdoor seating area in the back and it truly is a treat to sit there are be surrounded by plants :)
J.
May be a little pricey, but totally worth a try. Coffee is divine, fragrant robust roast and milk is portioned just right. Must get the signature hackney sourdough toast or freshly baked loaf with some soft butter and home made jam. Fantastic place for a break, a catch-up with friends, weekend pizzas, and yummy vegan lunches - takeaway is usually recommended, unless you’re lucky enough to find seats and indulge right there and then.
D. L.
The Coffee is memorable and once tasted you may find it difficult to drink coffee elsewhere that doesn't have the high standards that they have.
The sourdough Breads are exquisite and therefore highly recommended
P. A.
The best sourdough bread you can get in London! I occasionally travel here in Saturday morning and get a loaf whilst it's still warm. The Hackney Wild is incredible, but is definitely on the pricey end considering the fairly small size.
Even so - would still recommend this bakery to anyone looking for great quality sourdough.
J. L.
Very nice place! Coffee and toasties were amazing and loads of interesting things to watch or buy in the store!
G. C.
Great spot in London Fields. Brilliant staff with a wide menu of goodies. Number of different breads, beers and chocolate made on site by a top notch team. Would recommend particularly on a nice day as they have an outside area.
M. A.
The pastries are excellent but the star of the show is the sourdough. Great crumb, taste and texture. The only slightly off note was the pancakes. Far too sweet and the plate was really busy with flavours. Maybe even too busy. 4 stars.
A. F.
Great coffee, simple delicious menu. Loud music...
J. R.
I absolutely love this place, its hidden away in the railway arches by London Fields station. Wine/beer/coffee/pizza they offer it all, the coffee is amazing and they genuinely make the best brownies in London and I have tried so so many across the city. AND its dog friendly!
C. J.
Great selection of cakes and pastries and the bread is ✨

The bread is indeed amazing, but sometimes it takes so long to prepare simple orders... Today my simple slice of sourdough with butter took 25 minutes and it only came after ai complained twice. I won't stop coming, I just thing they can improve on the order flow (of course I am not expecting and I don't want it to be fast, just reasonable times)
B. B.
Absolutely delicious. The apple cake was outstanding!
C. B.
Been a regular at E5 bakehouse since it opened and is the best sourdough in London or indeed that I've ever had. Also love heading down for a coffee and 2 slices of toast and local produced jams. It can get quite busy on the weekends as it is a victim of its own success, but worth the wait! I recommend this place to people visiting for a taste of hipster East London (but I mean that in a nice way)
J.
Amazing place - the bread making workshop was great fun and the bread we made there was incredible.
D. S.
Best freshly-baked sourdough bread in London, if not the entire UK. The owners have invested in their own flour grinding machinery, using organic flours. Their breads are baked freshly each day starting at 4:00. The loaves are often warm when visiting the bakery before 9:00 -- it opens at 7:00 daily including Sunday. The cafe is a lovely spot for breakfast or lunch but plan to arrive early as it gets extremely crowded, especially on weekends. My 5 stars are based on the quality of the baked goods -- absolutely first rate without parallel in London.
M. S.
Amazing. Food menu looks lovely, drinks are great, space is impressive. Love being able to walk through the bakery and see all the delicious bread being made. Outdoor space is unexpected and a huge plus.
A. R.
E5 is a lovely place to meet friends - nice coffee - I had a fantastic cheese toasty here - amazing. Nice grocery area to buy flour and various fancy ingredients. But cake is overpriced. The bread is good at E5 but the bread is much better at The Bread Station (Danish bakery) which is on Helmsley place just a couple of minutes away. As soon as I discovered Bread Station I no longer buy bread at E5. Sorry E5
R. S.
This place is a must go, when staying in the Hackney / London Fields area! First of all, they have great coffee! Secondly, they have delicious breads, pastries and prepared snacks/small plates. If you need to use the restroom, you get to walk through the bustling kitchen where you can observe everything being made. Great place! Definitely give it a try!
S. O.
Absolutely loved it they have an amazing selection of home baking as different flours and they are milling in house as well which is amazing being a homemaker have such an amazing place nearby I just regret not knowing about this place before. Went there to get some flour and ended up having a lovely time eating pizza and some coffee. The best around I highly recommend the selection of cheeses too!
C. F.
Lovely atmosphere and staff. Great bread, food and coffee and fermented goods
C. B.
Best bakery in the area (maybe even London!?) hands down. Excellent coffee and a really delicious lunch menu that change everyday. The bread is some of the best you'll find anywhere. And I love that they are open early every day!
T. K.
Best bread in Hackney, the coffee and eat-in experience is also very good although coffee service is at times slow.
Very tolerant of children, animals, bicycles and sweaty runners. Makes for a vibrant and tight atmosphere.
Bread quality is fantastic and the pastries are great, some of my AirBnB guests from Paris said they had the best Croissant from outside Paris there.
B. C.
The E5 Bakehouse is a must visit for anyone vaguely interested in bread, or anyone hungry in London Fields. Well worth jumping of the train for if you happen to be passing through.
Delicious cafe-meals, good coffee and the best bread I might have ever had, made without all the weird ingredients that make up a supermarket's plastic-wrapped sliced loaf.
Go there soon if you haven't been!
f. z.
Great source for overpriced bread and selection of pastries. Bit disappointed by banana bread. Great service and really good hot chocolate balances it out. I wish their staff would be more rude doe so all the Karen types and their kids would keep away and we could sit inside instead of having to stay outside. Maybe ban babyccino?! Spoiled Hackney gremlins everywhere screaming and crying.
K. G.
This is a great little sustainable organic bakery in east London specialising in sourdough. Excellent lunch menu. I've just done the sourdough bread making class and it was fantastic. The cakes are a bit hit and miss. Some are fantastic others are a bit dry but I can't fault the bread! Enjoy.
A. C.
I did the sourdough bread making class here, which was super fun and very educational. I no longer have to knead bread dough with the new technique given to us! We made bagels, ciabattas, rye bread and a country loaf - all wonderful products - and were given recipes and a sourdough starter to take away with us. We were even fed breakfast, lunch, and an afternoon tea selection of cakes. Highly recommend.
K. R.
Just had to leave a review - I had the vegan maple and date cake and an oat latte which were both honestly amazing. The cake was such a lovely flavour (nice to have a different option for vegans not brownie/flapjack) it was sticky and sweet and gone in about 20 seconds. Staff were approachable, welcoming and helpful. My coffee was perfect, one of the best I've had recently. Not usually in the area but will make a beeline for here next time I am!! (Ps the bread was delish too, samples on the counter)
P. K.
One of my all time favourite bakeries. The prices are a bit high (but not really higher than other London artisan bakeries), but everything I ever tried was definitely worth the money. My favourite are definitely the brownies and I have yet to find a bakery with tastier ones. They have a small sitting area, but it gets quite warm since the whole baking and selling operation are in the same huge room. It's best to get some treats there and enjoy them in London Fields just around the corner.
M. V.
To my opinion, the oven doesn't work well because the crust is always burnt and the inside of the bread is very moist. So it feels everything cooks too fast, even the pastries. It's a nice bakery but I'm always disappointed by the cooking
M. M.
I really really wanted to be able to give 5 stars - I travelled a long way to try this place as I had heard it was one of the best bakeries in London. I brought home one of their famous sourdough loaves and a couple of biscuits. Whilst the biscuits were amazing - truly delicious - the sourdough bread was really underbaked. I was so disappointed - cutting into it it defaulted to half its size and the only way to describe it was gooey. A real shame - I will probably come back to try again as everyone raves about the bread - I probably got a bad batch. Almond shortbread and chocolate rye cookie were superb though!
D. B.
Positives first- the hackney wild is divine, their brunch menu has some solid options like the galette and trout bread, and the babka (on the v rare occasion they make it) is excellent.
Negatives- they have stopped doing the amazing pizza on Sundays, it’s really expensive for baked goods and sometimes miss the mark, and the staff are 9 times out of 10 beyond rude and unfriendly. The latter is why we have stopped going- it’s just not worth it. When we asked about the pizza the woman we spoke to acted as if we had shot her cat in front of her. This isn’t a one-off- say hello, smile, order food, enquire about a cake or menu item- whatever it is prepare for a hostile attitude. A real shame! All it takes is a friendly atmosphere (and the return of the pizza) and this place would be back to one of our faves .
S. L.
I come here for lunch often, every day they serve a different veg main course, usually very good (sometimes I don't like it but it's quite rare) mad above all it's feel fresh, homemade and healthy. I used to come for breakfast too but they stopped doing soy lattes unfortunately. Not so keen on the cashew and oats milk they now serve. 😉 The chocolate brownie is delicious 🤤
B. D. (. B.
The most delicious bread is walnut sourdough
A. A. M.
Best bread in Hackney :) service is not amazing though...
Selection of products that they don’t make is quite good too.
R. R.
Superb easy going bakery in E5. Incredible pizza (and this is an Italian speaking) with quality flour, light full of flavour dough. Really worth the trip alone. Bread is made on the premises using sustainable and local mills. Even the bread making courses are really well organised. All in a superb local business.
J. D.
A customer of several years now who is habitually impressed with the spelt loaf and wood fired pizzas. However, the Hackney Wild and buns lack any sort of dependable consistency, often arriving in varying degrees of size and 'burntness'.
H. M.
Chilled out, excellent sourdough toast, some sweet vegan options and organic spreads (and peanut butter). They use Bonsoy as their dairy free milk, which is always a sign of someone who knows what they're doing with coffee. Staff are grumpy, but who cares: it's a working bakery, not a Michelin restaurant! They probably start baking at 4am or something, give em some slack and enjoy some truly excellent carbohydrate!
M. C.
This is one of the best places in Hackney for coffee, freshly baked breads and cakes. They also do a healthy brunch menu and light lunches. The bakery takes up two arches underneath London Fields overground Station. If you haven't been there already, you are missing a treat.
R. C.
E5 is a very unique Bakery.
E. s.
Nice coffee and good selection of pastries (which are quite pricey but I think that is becoming the standard especially given the location). Staff was friendly and helpful
S.
Quality coffees and friendly staff. Interesting site under the railway arches with a few tables out front and back. The bakery was abuzz with staff. We'd love to have tried the cinnamon buns if we'd hadn't already had breakfast. Only things stopping me putting 5 stars are that the table needed cleaning (think sticky with Marmite, blee) and the waiter plonked down our coffees and spoons (with no saucers) on the dirty table and the loo is literally in the kitchen so hopefully that'll be partitioned off at some point. Recommended for coffee and snacks at the side of London Fields.
y.
Knead I say more - Exceptional sour dough and a great selection of spread to go with your bread and coffee. The raspberry & almond jam, dark roasted peanut butter are my favourites.
Have also been impressed with their initiative to support refugees with training and to up-skill those who seek to learn.
T. T.
Loved it! Had a pot of chai tea with a slice of chocolate ganache cake which were both divine! Hung out in the garden at the back after walking through and seeing all the work it takes to make such wonderful food and the smiley chefs!! Definitely will be back there 😁
E. C.
When they have goats curd - there's no breakfast I crave more than their delicious toasted sourdough bread, chilli butter and 2 eggs with a side of curd! Yum. Always a bit loud in here but you can sit outside and servers are mostly lovely and friendly.
b. m.
MUST ! 1 of the best London bakery and lunch place!
Best bread loaf , coffees and cakes!
My favorit place for quick affordable lunch : extraordinary cheese toastie + super soup= £7.50 in ! Top notch very well sourced organic ingredients
D. M.
Lovely Bakery.
Amazing selection of breads made to perfection !My favourite is the raisin and walnut and also the rugbrod. They serve great coffee and always welcome me with a smile.
Highly recommended.
K. D.
What to say, one of the best bakeries in East London. Delicious jams complement stellar sourdough breads and baked goods. Get there early for the almond croissant. Breakfast and lunch menus both offer winning combos!
N. H.
My favourite bakery in Hackney. The bread is absolutely amazing. I love the one with coriander seeds and rye. They also serve a good coffee and sweets. They also offer baking classes. Thumbs up!
S. S.
I like coming here en route from London Fields for coffee and bread, (and the bread is phenomenal). But what’s up with letting people cram up the space with their laptops? It means no one talks to each other and there’s no space for other folk to eat. It’s become rather charmless as a result. And the last few times I’ve been in the customer service has been a bit aloof too. Shame as it’s awesome otherwise.
N. B.
Good coffee and tasty sandwiches
Sweets are fabulous!
I won't go for pizza again nor bread, not sourdough 3 timesI guess or anyway is a bit heavy, I bought it and didn't enjoy it.
The other food served, not only the sandwiches (that are very out-of-the-box, and I love them, made with the same bread apparently? I cannot understand that, lol! ) but soup and toastie or hot food are quite good. A chilled stop waiting or off the train and one of my favourite place to sit in or out in the sun, watching people out and about
C. T.
E5 Bakehouse came recommended for a reason. I love its little archway of friendliness and decent array of homemade (and slightly unusual) cakes. It has a very honest, wholesome vibe. There are some nice wooden benches and stools inside, with some wooden chairs outside.
Choosing what to eat is a nightmare because it all looks delicious. The staff are friendly and laid back. It's a bit expensive. They also run some cookery courses.
A. F.
Good bakery, good coffee, but the click and collect service doesn't always work, which after a 40 minute walk in the pouring rain can be somewhat annoying.
A. B.
Great coffee, big selection of home baked bread, pastries and cakes. Laid back, friendly atmisphere. Occasionally a gluten-and dairy free cake option but not first thing in the morning and not all the time. Coffees can take a while to appear when it's busy.
C. D.
A popular local bakery and cafe, with a good range of bread and cakes. I think it's all made on the premises, organic and locally sourced.
They do pizza on Sundays.
It used to have only a few tables and fill up quickly, but they have now expanded into the next railway arch as well, giving lots more space.
They also do classes, such as bread making.
D. W.
Amazing bakery. Recently redone to include other shop items, both for baking bread at home as well as local grocery items and a few bulk bins. The food is great, of course, but it's really just everything you want in a local bakery. Absolutely love spending time here.
S. H.
Great food, very friendly, just around London Fields station
D. G. S.
E5 is an exceptional place - possibly a movement, if you will - where they are offering the best quality bread, food and coffee. This is not a place where the coffee is tagged on, as an afterthought: they excel at it. Come here to buy organic grains, cheeses, Nordic crockery, and of course sourdough. Love it.
F. F.
Really good bread, probably the best sourdoughs I’ve tried in London! And everything you’ll possibly need to make your own bread (including good advices).
D. S.
Coffee is amazing, bread is incredible. Service is scrappy and prices are insane. £2 for a piece of toast if you eat in, when the whole loaf is £3.50.
r. s.
Wonderful concept for a baker house!!! Just go and try it!!!
T. H.
Coffee was good. Incredibly busy to the point people were bumping into one another. Looks like a great place to buy bougie cooking supplies, kombucha and other Hackneyesque sundries.
P. S.
Great Place to get some proper breakfast. We had Granole and Porridge. Great portions, and the bread is absolutely stunning and fresh. There was some unkind staff, but maybe because we didn´t understand the concept of the marmalades on the table...
F. P.
E5 is serious about quality and sustainability. For me it's the best bakery in the area - and there's a lot of competition. Plus v good lunches served in a relaxed cafe. And you can refill your lentil jars in the shop... The bakery also runs a training programme for refugee women.
F. W.
Nice coffee, good food, healthy & veggie options, eco-friendly groceries and quality gifts etc in shop. Quality, eco friendly and ethical ethos. Roomy seating area inside and out. Lack of high chairs, awkward access to toilets and a long-distance wait for food only slight issues- not enough to put me off coming back!.
B. A.
Great local artisanal breads, wine and beers, sweets and pastries. Cozy back patio and a full flour mill and bread kiln on display. They use local British grains and the results are outstanding.
J. T.
The day-long bread-making course is brilliant. Don't hesitate in signing up! Those on the course got to sample all sorts from the bakery and café too. Everything I ate and drank during the day was absolutely delicious.
c. h.
i THINK THIS IS THE BEST BAKERY IN LONDON THEY ARE POLITE CLEAN SHOP AND DELICIOUS BAKET BREAD. NUMBER ONE IN LONDON
G. C.
It's a bakehouse...the snacks are obviously stellar, as was my macchiato. Small, but conducive to getting some work done. There's another cafe next door...not sure if they're related. Coffee is roasted at their Poplar location (which, btw, is much larger and perfect for working).

I've only been here once for a coffee & a cookie, but both were GREAT! I had a salt chocolate rye cookie. It was amazing & I'll be going back for more. I can only imagine how yummy the bread is!
S. c.
I had a marvellous day in their bakery school. The place is very relaxed and has a hip feeling. The cakes and coffee are to die for. Whilst their watch them milling their own wheat.
M. W.
To taste real bread made from flour ground in front of you is like a childhood memory.
Best soup I ever had and a croissant to die for. A must visit for anyone.
K.
Lovely little bakery with a big choice of breads and pastries. The coffee is good too. Not awarding 5 stars, because in my opinion the staff is not very friendly.
D. A.
Right by london fields station, this trendy Hackney favourite is a bakers paradise! There's delicious toast, grilled cheese sandwiches and cakes to enjoy in store plus a wide selection of breads to take home. They even hold baking classes to help your sour d'oh become sourdough!
The service can be a little hit and miss at times...but well worth a visit!
S. W.
E5 is great find in East London. Casual, friendly and the bread is incredible, definitely worth popping in if you’re in the area. The coffee is fantastic as well.
C.
Hipster bakery with great bread that also sells lunch take-away food and other small kitchen groceries.
J. N.
Best bakery in London
The bread here is out of this world feels like getting a loaf from 16th century France. Cafe is a bit small and cramped but this place is a must see
R. N.
Been going for years always good but lacking creativity on new bread they used to sell coriander seed bread which came off menu. I would like to see turmeric bread , chestnut bread .....etc...
K. R.
I love this place and really miss it now I've moved house! Their bread is incredible - the Hackney Wild in particular is full of flavour. I've been there for breakfast a few times and, despite having to wait for a table many times, it's always been worth it! I also went on their sourdough making course - absolutely brilliant experience. I learnt to make so many things (Hackney Wild, ciabatta, bagels etc) and finally 'got' sourdough - it's hard to follow from a book, but the staff here were clear, patient and super knowledgeable. Now only if they'd move to South Woodford...
L. B.
Small space with communal tables and outside seating. Mediocre coffee. Huge selection of bread to cater to everyone's dietary needs, a simple breakfast menu and lots of sweet baked goods to choose from.
J. A.
Very good bread and coffee
T. M.
Don’t know if it’s the best in town and don’t taste huge difference with other majors but will definitely add it to my list of good bakery. Place was packed in Saturday lunchtime
G. M.
Delicious, artisan food - go-to place for top quality products and great nosh! Outside eating spaces could be improved...
U. E.
Nice place to go for a coffee. I really like the uniqueness of their bread. It is very fresh and has a great texture (from their Hackney Wild flour).
J. P.
Great coffee, pioneer artisan Baker for Hackney. They started the trend and are still the benchmark even tho others might have surpassed them. They also do classes, which one day I'd love to attend.
M. F.
Not only is their bread really old school tasty but they do a great full day breadmaking class where you get to see all the behind the scenes bibs and bobs and take home loaves of goodness at the end of the session. A joy.
J.
A must eat in London, very tasty and very healthy as well! We found this place on the internet as we come from Paris! The little garden area is very peaceful for breakfast!
K. G.
E5 Bakehouse, tucked under a railway arch next to London Fields station looks quite unassuming from the outside - in fact, I'm not even sure whether they have a sign. But once inside, the place is cosy and welcoming. The majority of the bakehouse is an open-plan kitchen, so you can watch the staff doing their thing whilst you eat, drink and make merry. The vegetarian food I had was seriously top notch - they clearly know what they are doing. Often veggie dishes are an after-thought, but this stuff was packed full of interesting flavours from herbs and spices. The almond hummus was incredibly tasty - especially with their delicious homebaked bread. I found the staff to be pretty quiet but friendly - they mainly left us to it, which was fine. They run pretty regular supper clubs, so if you haven't been yet, I suggest you check them out!
B. D.
I love this place. From the Heath Robinson looking flour mill to the coffee and buzzing atmosphere. Yeah bemoan the price of bread etc but it is good stuff and you get what you pay for.
Q. C.
Great bread and food at lunch are amazingly healthy and refreshing. To me perhaps the most unique thing about this bakehouse is the aria of Zen. Not sure how to put it in words but you will understand when you visit and talk to them :)
L. P.
Bread is lovely. Staff is more than friendly. A good place to go for a vegetarian meal. It's usual to see bakery workshops in this place. Good vibe!
K. P. (.
Came here for a private evening dinner and they had an absolutely AMAZING vegetarian menu on, complete with a roulade to make all roulades jealous. The staff are super friendly, and the rumbling of the trains overhead sounds like distant thunder. I can't wait to get back and try their bread, and I hope I get to come back for another evening here soon!
a. p.
Excellent baked goods, great coffee, fantastic sourdough loaves. All served in the midst of their working bakery. Definitely recommended.
P. J.
such a special place, get my bread from here twice a week. Hackney loaf and stockhholm are my pick. Lunchtime is divine, always get the soup..and the salad if I have some room. Divine spot.
K.
Great coffee and tasty pastries. Service can be a bit hit and miss ... staff can be lethargic and unbothered at times.
N. W.
There is no doubt that your bread is as good as it gets. But I was really sad today to find that a loaf of Hackney Wild is now £4. I have lived in the area for nearly 25 years and seen enterprises such as yours bring good, nay great things to Hackney. But for me the ceiling has been hit. I have to make a stand. £4 for a loaf of bread is more than I can justify from my charity wages. Sorry guys, need to find something affordable. I am heartbroken.........
A. F.
Very nice place for a coffee and cake
S.
Loved everything about this place. Only popped in to grab a mocha and ended up with a delicious gluten free cake. I'll definitely be going back to have a coffee and cake whilst reading my book...Lovely energy there.

You tend to think east London businesses based in railway arches should contain bald headed boisterous brothers running questionable mechanics outfits. However, the arches next to London Fields not only contains the quirky vintage furniture shop Arch 389, bespoke carpenters and coffee hangouts, but are also home to a bread revolution going by the name of the E5 Bakehouse.
You may have seen the E5 Bakehouse in Saturday mags alongside articles about artisan food and what appears to be an influx of floppy haired men in their early 30s getting their kicks from dough (I’m looking at you the fabulous baker brothers). But it’s not just a bakery selling freshly made loaves of sourdough, sourced from local ingredients; alongside the production of the East end’s finest sliced, is their rugged and perfectly formed coffee shop. With the working bakery as the backdrop, rough and ready tables adorn the front of the arches, spilling out on to the pavements of London Fields – perfect people watching set up.
The lunchtime allure is the doorstop sandwiches made from the day’s batch of sourdough; crackling crusts and hearty fillings at decent prices really do make you question those copious curled edged packeted purchases we default buy. It’s pretty much the freshest thing off Mare Street and did make us consider for a moment attending their bread making course (runs most Saturdays) – fillings on the day we visited were mature cheese and sliced pickle and a rather fetching feta and beetroot salad. But if the noble sandwich isn’t your bag, there’s a range of lunch plates with decent offerings of falafel, robust salads and of course to round it all off some sturdy cakes and sweet treats for afters.
There’s a petite but not over done offering of coffee and teas, plus of course you can pick up a loaf from the morning’s batch along with the mix of lunchtime goers – local workers, East end Broadway market types and surprised passers by getting to grips with the sourdough revolution. The beauty of the bakehouse is that it’s not over done or pristine, it’s honest and has heart, the staff are laid back and clearly care about their creations, whether that be their bread or your lunch.
T. M.
Very nice bakery, with a great variety of bread. They also have tasty handmade jam.
J. h.
Best bread in London... and they do lovely espresso to!! Worth a little treck in the rain to get there 💚
M. S.
Bakery by day, and great little pop-up restaurant by night; a place best described as a little bit boho and very cute. Based in a single railway arch, the decor is modest and the space is relatively small, although the ceiling is high so the bakery/restaurant feels very spacious to spend an evening.
Dinner is served on lightweight tables with fold-up benches, which adds to the boho feel of the evening (!) but my goodness the food that is served-up is superb. A group of us had the most delicious chana dal known to man, and I defy you to make a vegetarian curry that tastes better than the beautiful aubergine green curry we were presented with. We also had a beetroot dish which was served with a side of almond and sherry vinegar sauce (the recipe of which the cook was kind enough to share with us - it was so good).
And as for the monster blackberry pavlova roulade served for pudding, what can I say - the whole table couldn't take its eyes of this work of art. Seriously delicious.
Really lovely service too. Highly recommended.
S. D.
Best bakery in london! Has been on TV so many times. The sourdough is excellent. They've even expanded for do baking classes
G. C.
Great little secret spot. You can have a coffee and cake right by where they bake the bread and make their pastries. There’s also a patio at the back for sunny days.
A. S.
Located under the railway arches of London Fields Station, this cosy bakery occasionally turns into an evening supperclub - one that serves up delicious, wholesome meals perfect for sharing. We requested a veggie-friendly meal and our group were treated to several awesome (and mostly vegan), imaginative courses. Highlights for me included salty foccacia, beetroot salad with an almond dip, the creamiest chana dahl with fluffy rice and the most incredible blackberry meringue roulade I've ever seen. Seriously, we spent a full five minutes taking photos before we ate the damn thing. Very impressed by the quality and quantity of the food here - I'll definitely be in line for their next supperclub.
A. S.
The place is very unique and offers so much variety for breakfast and brunch! Go for avocado on toast and kefir with granola! The downside is the chaotic service... but everything else is worth a visit!
J. H.
Wonderful range of breads, cakes and a healthy range of on site cooked hot and cold foods.
The crispy baguette is worth a chew....by the time I get back home half of it is already gone !! Plus 5 stars
P. M.
I've been using E5 for the past 2+years after discovering it on a cycling trip. It's the closest thing to the legendary Ceres Bakery that was on Portobello Road in the 1970s. The bread looks and tastes fantastic and the bakehouse is open, airy and welcoming. Love the Spelt and the Multigrain but to be honest, it's all good.
T. H.
Nice Coffee and tasty pastries.
S. D.
Anyone who lives in North or East London has enjoyed the E5 Bakehouse's fine loaves, so when they said they were running a supperclub in their railway arch, I bought tickets straightaway. The bakery itself is light, cool and huge, given that most arches can be dark and cramped - we were sat at long sharing tables, and luckily I ended up sat next to two lovely people who'd been to one of my Zagat events!
It was £30 per person and for that, we got a cocktail and smallish pre-starter of Moroccan potato cake, served with carroty hummus and (of course) piles of bread with very green peppery olive oil, then creamy pork rillette with broad beans and leaves. The main was a huge garlicky shoulder of lamb that we had to carve up per table served with potatoes, rice, chickpea curry - by this time, we were all pretty full. But the pudding...wow. Moist pistachio cake served with strawberries and cream meant we actually rolled home, with a doggie bag for the rest of our main in hand. You could also buy great-quality wine at £18 a bottle, chosen by a local winery. The only tiny gripe was that the staff weren't as friendly as they could have been - like, I wanted to know why they were called the E5 Bakehouse but located in E8. I also wanted to know a bit more about the bakery...but the staff were pretty quiet. Still, that's a minor complaint for an amazing evening of chat and food.
R. H.
Wonderful bakery with a mill and everything.
N. W.
There is one problem with E5 Bakehouse. One. The bread here is so good that you will never be happy eating bread from anywhere else ever again. I don't say this as an exaggeration but as a warning. I bake my own bread, but almost stopped for a year after realising that my bread couldn't hold a candle to the Hackney Wild sold here. Thankfully as well as selling the best bread in London they also offer bread baking courses so now I am back to regular baking; I just eat more bread to keep my Hackney Wild habit going.
The only other negative I can think of is that the space for sitting and eating is quite small, and there can be a queue, but this is small fish when compared to the quality of the produce.
Other positives: as well as a variety of breads (all using a sourdough starter, so far as I can tell) including the aforementioned Hackney Wild, a rye (Route 66), and a spelt loaf, they sell hot lunches and cakes, as well as serving Nude espresso coffee.
Finally, and whether you consider this a positive or negative is a personal thing, it seems to be frequented by various celebs including Michael Fassbender and Ben Whishaw.
Use this information wisely. And don't buy all the bread.
C. F.
Always delighted to pick up my rugbrød. So good I had to ask the lady to cut to slice off so I could munch it on my way home. Very good place for fresh bread
B. S. P. D.
Outrageously good croissant, straight out of a top level Parisian bakery. Coffee needs some work.
C. O.
Did the advanced sourdough course there recently. Eyal was an excellent and patient teacher and the group was friendly.
As usual e5 put on a lovely spread for lunch.
T.
A huge place. The interior is quite dark. Not a bad place for coffee and a catch up with friends.
Can be a little pricey
There is outdoor seating to the rear.
M. G.
Amazing loaves, super nice staff, quick service. I always buy 3-4 different loaves, slice and freeze, enjoy as toast for a month and travel 1.5 hours again to restock.
D. M.
Tempted not to rate this 5 stars as it’s one of the few bakery/coffee spots around London fields not oversubscribed. Amazing brunch, baked goods and coffee ☕️
L. H.
Coffee is always great, and their lunch food is amazing so tasty. Lunch only between 12-15 weekdays though don't get there late, sometimes they run out before 15 as well.
O. A.
Excellent gem. Delicious food and craft beers. You can use your own Tupperware and everything for local grains.
S. K.
Super cozy cafe with wonderful baked goods.
M. V. J.
I have just discovered this place and it is amazing! Can't stop buying bread here. Food is very good! A hidden spot which is highly recommended
C. B.
Stunning garden area at the back to sit in and enjoy a cuppa. Great to see the inner workings of the bakery and seeing the food prepared right in front of me!
E. D.
Stockholm bread is my favourite. Chewy full sized substantial loaf
R. S.
Such an awesome bakery. I did the bread making course which was fantastic in itself. Produce is exceptional and everyone is very friendly. I recommend doing the course.
D. C.
Really nice cafe with great cake, teas and coffee and amazing bread!! You can also enjoy their daily cooked food it change all the time :)
m. s.
Bakery specialising in sourdough breads, which provides bakery classes, has an onsite café & a shop providing bakery accoutrements in addition to the basics. Hackney Wild is worth a trip on its own, friendly buzzy staff & clientele.
G. C.
Good music, good bread and pastry! Organic... and bread-making classes!
P. G.
This is a really great place to relax and enjoy good organic food and tasty bread made on site. The staff are great too and very friendly. Well worth a visit.
A.
Quality tea, freshly baked cakes. Carrot (cup)cake was great, not too sweet and moist. Coconut macaroni were soft and refreshing.
J. S. E.
Great spot for brunch and coffee. Love it!!!
E. P.
As good as everyone says. A must-eat in London—as demanding as this sounds, just wish there were a little more variety in the offering. But what they do, they do extremely well.
D. T.
This place is great. Really not cheap, but still good value given the quality. Great coffee, cakes and even the ice lollies are good. I visit whenever I'm in London Fields.
M. S.
Good looseleaf tea, tasty cakes; Warm welcoming staff. Only downside was music too loud to hold a normal conversation - otherwise nice place to go.
P. J.
Small artisan cafe with bakery The bread constantly being made. The breads have long lingering tastes and are I believe worth the money.
Y. Y.
Lovely place with healthy food
M. F.
Perfect brunch in East London. Great veggie and vegan options. If it's sunny, make sure you grab a table outside.
j. h.
Delicious bread buns and cakes in a busy environment . I love it .
Especially the Bircher muesli with kefir and compote - yes it's that kinda place
E. S.
Delicious food and great atmosphere
C. M.
Nice cosy place, excellent quality of products, but service lately has fallen as it is already second time I bought a bread that was not up to the usual standard: either it was not wholemeal sourdough as I asked or it turned out completely burnt and totally flat... pity they gave it to me already wrapped from the annexed shop and I trusted them...
J. R.
Great food and coffee. Just needs to laid out better. It always feels like chaos in there and the coffees take ages.
J. T.
It's OK, great bread! Coffee not so much! But we all have differing taste buds....so worth a try..
G. R.
Delicious smoked salmon and cheeses in the deli. Coffeeshop is just like the thousand other coffee shops in the area.
A. L.
Lemon cake was decent, however I expected it to taste more of lemon. Only the icing was very lemony. The mocha cake was bland. Not impressed.
J. P. T.
Good coffee and warm atmosphere. A large bakery. But a little hectic and slow service. Avoid at peak times.
A. J.
Great fresh bread. You can walk into the kitchen to see the bakers at work. And they give lessons!
T. L.
I love this place. Amazing bakery, the coffees and pastries are insane good! lovely staff as well.
W. R.
Cracking place, had a veggie bahn mi out back with a tasty coffee. Class.
R. K.
Best sourdough bread in the area. Also a coffee shop with a good pastries. Greatly appreciated and recommended.
J. P.
Great coffee and cake. The bread to buy is great as well, but a bit expensive (although I think it's in line with other similar bakeries)
S. V. N.
discovered at home, that the lady in sales didn't supply me with the right bread I had asked for. We need this to improve please! Its upsetting, since we love the multigrain bread so much.
B. S.
Very nice and local place. Take a cup of coffee and some sweets made there. Make sure you pick a bread of your choice and enjoy ot at home later.
J. B.
Amazing coffee. And if you like the smell of freshly baked bread it's the best place without a doubt
T. A.
It was the best bakery and cafe in London, and is rapidly branching into other areas. One of the best places for bread, and most other food stuffs
D. T.
Great little garden seating area, flour ground in front of you, the smell of baking and good food and coffee.
J. T.
Exceptional bread and everything you need for home baking.
R. D.

Would have been 5* if they sliced their loaves! Always buy bread from here but would much prefer it if they could slice it for me. Not sure why they don't do this?!
M. H.
Excellent coffee, wonderful cheesecake, amazing people, lovely ambiance. Definitely one of my top 5 cafes in London.
T. R.
up there with very few others producing the best bread in London - at least as good as Gale but much less pretentious and great people and concept - shame they don't do home deliveries
M. R.
Some of the best bread in London. Brunches are tasty. Very 'trendy East London' if that's your thing.
A. M.
Love to come here, grab coffee and head out to their backyard. At times service can be a bit rude, hence only 4*.
M. C.
Great place! 4 stars only for not enough seating places, but it was still amazing to stay there and smell fresh bread!
h. m.
You know it's your lucky day when you walk into E5 early in the morning and there are fresh cinnamon rolls. Be careful they are more addictive than fibre optics internet.
G. B.
Excellent and dog friendly.
S. E.
Amazing place with passionate people and the best breads in East London. Also did a baking class there, which was great.
M. W.
I love this place. Been coming here for10 years and its wonderful to see this business grow. Im highly addicted to their Stockholm bread.

M. F. H. M.
Love bread and pastries here, excellent breakfast. Coffee could be a bit more carefully prepared.
F. A.
There’s nothing else to say, this place is an institution: try the cinnamon rolls, explore the back of the place and, if there for lunch, try the soups! The coffee is good too, nothing to cry about though.
F. K.

Probably the best bread in East London. Cafe can be busy and staff can sometimes be visibly stressed or a little terse.
A. R.
Great sourdough bread (Hackney Wild) and could be the best Pain Au Chocolat in London perhaps the world!!
m. m.
A great place for coffee and cake, relaxed, friendly and the very definition of local. The Hackney Wild loaf is an absolute must!
C. M.
Learnt how to make sourdough here what a great course. Their bread, cake and coffee is always Spot on.
מ. כ.
Amazing bread! Cute cozy place, super cool environment. The best pizza I had ever!
B. W.
Food is great but it's a shame the staff aren't friendlier to customers. We're not out to make your life difficult!
C. A.
Amazing food coffee and music. Sadly the most moody and miserable staff I’ve ever encountered (bar one or two of them) who are clearly in the wrong industry.
J. K.
Great value for money. Fresh seasonal menu. Generous portions. Excellent biscuits too. Some of the best!
