Reviews of Fortitude Bakehouse
R.
The cinnamon sticky bun, the cheese straw, and the Americano were really good!
The bakery location is so nice too.
Z. H.
Went there for a quick breakfast, we wanted to try everything as it's all homemade but 1 piece of pastry was already quite filling! They serve hot drinks as well, it's probably very nice for a dessert and the afternoon's tea. The staff was very nice.
K. D.
Very nice ladies, good coffee but the buns are not particularly outstanding. The filling is very generous but the custard along with the brioche could have been a bit more tasteful.
L. H.
Unassuming location, very close to Russel Square station. The morning bun (I believe) changes flavour regularly - I bought mine in such a rush I didn't read the sign but it was divine. The cup of tea was minutely small, hence the drop of a star.

What a nice bakery !
Being filling them for some time and always liked the decadent creations and offers are. Finally got the chance to pay a visit!
I must say it’s big thumbs up ! Got myself a Berber omelette and period oblige a mince pie 😉 both were very nice and really fresh.
Liked the little alley where it’s located. There are few tables to grab a coffee while munching there amazing creations.
Can’t wait to go back and try something else !
R. S.
The sticky cinnamon buns and the chocolate and custard Morning buns are genuinely some of the most delicious I’ve ever had. Coffee is great too.
R. C.
Insanely good baking. The morning buns are fluffy on the inside with a beautiful crust and great filling. The fermented cakes are superb. We had the chocolate orange one today and it was 10/10, cake perfection.
A. C.
Awesome morning buns (go and get them early, it sold out fast!). All the products I tried were great, I’m not so enthusiast about sticky buns, too sweet to me but still a great place for fresh sweet and savoury baked products!
J. H.
The Morning bun is just divine - What a combination! Given the size of pastries you can't fault their price at all - knowing that I ve had loads of above average price level pastries with stingy portions...
S. C.
Great bakery near the ucl campus.
The cinnamon bun was huge and pretty sweet.
L. J.
I Followed my nose! Its such a great place! Must visit!
L. G.
Paid £7.5 for a banana sourdough and a sticky bun. Both tasted great!
The banana sourdough was moist and got the great banana scent to it. The right amount of sweetness that was so addicting!
The sticky bun was also yummy. The bun was a little hard on the shell and soft on the inside. Not too sticky and both the texture and the flavor was good!
Would love to be back!
D. R.
Literally had the best coconut cake here. It was so moist and flavorful. 10/10. You can smell the bakery from down the street.

This is by far one of my favorites Coffee and Bakery Houses in London. Hidden and with an industrial design the quality of the coffee and the bakery is outstanding. One suggestion would be better and more comfortable chairs and tables.
h.
Oh man. This place is too much. Very tasty savouries and amazing cakes. Properly sized too. You will not go hungry and one slice of beautiful cake will keep you going most of the day. They make a good coffee too. Great value and great food.
M. W.
Hidden gem. Lovely coffee and amazing selection of buns and cakes. Morning bun is amazing. Highly recommended.
G. P.
The only bakery that can make people go on a massive hunt to find them. Morning buns are life.
S. P.
Gem of a spot in the city, perfect for a little lunch whether you plan on getting a take-away or sitting outside when the weather is favourable. Really friendly and helpful staff and most importantly absolutely delicious bakes! Treat yourself to a slice of their cake or an indulgent sticky bun, you won't be disappointed. Though if you plan on going for lunch, get there early as they do sell out of their meals fast.
S. G.
Had a great chat with the owner, Dee, about the vital importance of putting quality first. I will return. Am looking forward to the Irish sourdough. Also interesting is the use of the space both as a wholesale supply operation and for retail sales. This is the future. Post-brand, small-scale, integrated. Awesome.
J. T.
Great coffee, great buns.
Service was poor, was not greeted properly or spoken to nicely. New staff perhaps?
C. G.
Pretty good coffee spot. One of the better in town and they’re always open early in the mornings. Their sticky buns are what you want to pick from their bakery menu!
C. C.
Quaint environs, despondent
service, massive, but dry and unremarkable, morning bun.
Will visit again to try the sourdough cakes!
j. h.
Gorgeous cafe . Very friendly attentive staff. Amazing buns. Defo go again
K.
Really good food, if not a bit expensive, but is considerably worth it! They have a lovely array of unusually flavoured loafs which is what I enjoyed. The spinach and feta pie was awesome. Definitely worth to check out!
M. B.
Super friendly staff, respectable prices but most importantly, next level baked goods. Great variety and obviously super fresh as it's made on site each day.
S. A.
I tried their morning bun today and it was simply amazing! I will definitely go back to try also their cinnamon rolls as they looked so delicious!
C. M. S.
Don't really want to tell anyone about it as there's was no queue and I like being served quickly!
It is a lovely place to stop on a run and pick up a coffee and baked yummies.
K. B.
Well that was easy! I love new bakeries, saw this one on the map, dropped in, and I'M IN LOVE. So many delicious things, I couldn't decide! Ended up with an egg sandwich but I want to come back for their sourdough cakes, coffee, brownies, breads.....all looked so good. Lovely staff too :)
J. P.
This was excellent. The morning bun and cheesy twist were just heavenly. Can't wait to go back
B. C.
Discovered this place completely by accident last week. It's tucked away on a side street and only a little sandwich board alerts you to this gem of a coffee shop/bakery. The coffee was very smooth and flavoursome - probably the best I've had in London. I had a sausage roll, also awesome, and a slice of the apple crumble bread for dessert (went down nicely with the coffee). The selection of pastries is incredible, definitely will keep me coming back until I've tried them all.
The only downside is that there is only limited seating inside. Thankfully the weather was pleasant so I was able to sit outside. Actually, another slight downside is that it's only open during the week... However, the positives more than outweigh the slight negatives. Definitely recommend.
C. K.
Yummy bakery offering coffee as well as both sweet and savoury pastries made from scratch on site. Small seating area inside and outside.
W. S.
Marvelous little bake shop with scrumptious delicacies. Their sticky bun morning roll is the best I've ever tasted.
I. D. C.
I love me a little bakery so when I went to Fortitude, I was instantly in love with the cosy and homey vibes that the staff have. Even had to get myself a t shirt because it was just that good of a place. Would definitely recommend to friends and family when they’re in and around the area to grab absolutely anything on the menu. You will not be disappointed
J. D.
I am rather fond of the range of cakes provided by this establishment and have been a regular visitor for the past year or so. However, on several occasions, I have found their buns to be far too yeasty for consumption.
H. G.
My favourite bakery in London, food, coffee, and staff are all amazing. What made me come back after my first time was that they know how to cut a decent slice of cake (feels like two slices in one)!! I'm only ever disappointed when I can't make it to the cafe!
M. K.
Absolutely top of the London's cake scene. Amazing staff, with a huge passion to their work. We're definitely coming back!
T. C.
Great bakery. Worth looking for this place
O. L.
Great cinnamon roles. If you want some you need to arrive early because the sell out fast. Friendly service. Good coffee. Cool cakes and loads of very good looking sandwiches. The place is a bit hidden, however once you get close it is easy to find. Follow the smell of fresh bake and cinnamon.
A. T.
I saw this bakery and decided to go in for a quick breakfast after reading the good reviews. I had the sticky bun and I really regretted it, maybe I should have tried something else. I found it overpriced, and the texture was not as expected (too hard and difficult to eat standing, I had to sit to eat it). Besides, the rest of the products were also expensive and not very appealing. I have to say that I am a tourist from Spain who has also visited France several times and maybe we have different standards for bakery.
T. J.
Lovely coffee and baked goods. Very good with allergies too
M. K.
Absolutely top of the London's cake scene. Amazing staff, with a huge passion to their work. We're definitely coming back!

I tried their morning bun today and it was simply amazing! I will definitely go back to try also their cinnamon rolls as they looked so delicious!

Fantastic cafe. Nice food.
D. C.
Had a very nice brioche chicken roll. Their coffee's always good too
B. G. G.
Amazing coffee and pastries!
j. m.
Great coffee, buns and pastries fantastic but to big, if they were half the size they would just right to have with a coffee.
W. S.
Marvelous little bake shop with scrumptious delicacies. Their sticky bun morning roll is the best I've ever tasted.
F. S.
The best buns in London. If you love "bolas de berlin" it's the place to go on Fridays
Y. R.
Amazing and fresh food. 😍
A. L.
Cool venue, organic food, carefully made coffee, funky food.
j. v.
Moroccan style salads made fresh every day. It's a challenge to resist the delicious fermented cakes. If you get to go for a supper club here you'll be treated to an amazing menu and the staff are so lovely. Great evening out.
K. M.
Very good fresh salad range and soups all organic products and delicious. The special sour dough and pastries are very high grade and a real treat. Expresso Coffee and special tea drinks on offer and office orders can be delivered with 48 hours notice . A great and special lunch treat awaits those that seek this new venue out. Go enjoy .
V. L.
Pastries and baked goods are very nice and fresh. Love their fresh soups as well. Staff are always warm and friendly.
Just a note that there isn't much space for seating so really is designed for takeaway.
O. O.
Simply the best pasties on the planet!
T. J.
One of my favourite places for a coffee and cake fix... their sourdough Morning Bun provides serious satisfaction! Unfortunately they’re closed on Sundays - gutted.
D. S.
Great coffee, and the Morning Bun was delicious. Greeted by the scent of cinnamon as I arrived, a warm welcome on a cold day :)
s. m.
Unique and interesting bakes. Was very impressed by both the Banana & Bilberry loaf and the Pineapple, Coconut & Star Anise. Will definitely be back to try the lunch offerings.
R. S.
Cute little cafe and bakehouse. The cakes are delicious and the servings are more than generous. The breast tortilla was full of savoury flavour!
F. S.
The best buns in London. If you love "bolas de berlin" it's the place to go on Fridays

Excellent bakery, sausage roll was the best I have ever had - very big and very filling. Cakes looked delicious and will go back to try one.
J. M. M.
Wonderful bakery/cafe tucked behind the Principle hotel. I work locally and usually call in for a breakfast treat, today I tried the lunch menu. Hands down one of the most flavoursome chicken casear salad I've had.
E. s.
Wonderful setting in a quiet mews (you just sit outside in the mews) and absolutely delicious pastries as well as good coffee, get there early to avoid missing out on the full selection. Just a word of caution, it is quite pricey
A. N.
The apple custard morning bun was a revelation
H. M.
Loved my lunch visit at Fortitude - had a carrot and chickpea salad and a grainy cucumber salad followed by a slice of their amazing chocolate and berry loaf cake. The salads needed a little more seasoning and the grain salad didn't have many additional ingredients!
T. L.
Very good coffee spot. The sticky buns are very tasty.
D. C.
Had a very nice brioche chicken roll. Their coffee's always good too

Passion You Can Taste In The Coffees & The Cakes....
I arrived to this establishment on it's second day of opening to claim my free "launch" cup of coffee.
You wander down a small back-street of a London Mews (which on this day was snow-covered making it even more beautiful & quirky than normal) just around the corner from Russel Square Tube Station on the Piccadilly Line.
The first thing that hits you, is this feels like an old fashioned bakery from the outside, no pretentious signage, just old fashioned doors that will fully open for the summer and a small hanging sign to give you a nudge to where you go.
There's some seating outside, that will be fought over with much contention in the summer months and a few seats inside, so this is in essence very much a take-away establishment in the main,
Inside though, whilst the food and activity remains rooted in the past, this is definitely a 21st Century establishment. In fact just a little too much for my liking, they don't take cash here and purchases can only be made on card payments on what's now become the obligatory tablet (which I suspect, also means email receipts, another pet hate of mine),
I know many venues in London have tried this approach & ultimately acquiesced to market pressure (Filling Station, Kings Cross/Wolfes Bar & Grill - Covent Garden) but the reasoning for having it here is sound.
Cash money, unequivocally is filthy (in London it's also drenched in Cocaine) & in this environment with hand to food being so close it is a fair approach to have (But for me, someone who stopped using electronic, credit & debit cards of any kind nearly a decade ago, prevented me from trying an incredibly tempting cookie).
That said, it's the only minor quibble I have of the whole establishment.
From the moment you step in the door, the venue feels familiar. Staff greet you warmly, as if you've been coming here for years & its open plan nature means you can see the entire process of baking from start to finish unfold before your eyes.
Fortunately they were doing free tastings of the Bara Brith (2 words folks - Bread & Speckled, being a Welshman and this being the day after St. David's Day, I have good take on this Welsh Tea Loaf) which I can tell you was a moist rich delight - but boy did I want one of those enticing Oat & Brown Sugar biscuits that were sitting nearby (I had money in my pocket too).
This smelt like a bakery before you entered the building, wafts of bread, cake and biscuits emanating from the door & kick starting a memory explosion of traipsing to get my family's loaves of bread from the small bakery in my village back in the Valleys as a child).
This is most definitely a passion project for Jorge Fernandez (who was co-founder of the now firmly established London Chain "Fernandez & Wells") & his baker Dee Rettali (Who 1st supplied F&W with cakes before latterly becoming its operations manager).
Both are seen working hard in the background here, preparing the delights on display.
This is definitely up there with my favourite spots in London (joining the likes of Peter Lloyd's Sticky Mango in Waterloo & Neil Wager's Dokke In St. Katharine's Dock) in the last couple of years.
They are all driven by the passion for the food above all else & whilst they are clearly all businesses, these businesses work because the love goes into the food not into the marketing,
And here that shows in every part of the offering from vegan & gluten free biscuits & cakes, to the savoury pastries, to that delicious coffee I opened this review with
Bloomsbury has been beset with chains & this establishment is such a welcome diamond in the rough of mediocrity.
I understand it took a while to find a secure an affordable location for this venue but I'm so glad they did.
You will be too...
It's a new saving grace for London, long may it continue.

Sourdough muffin tastes a bit like a honey cake but to me like a lesser version thereof.

Fantastic bakery with a sourdough focus. Something really special in the area and innovative, freshly made products available in a spotlessly clean open bakery.

Passion comes out of every nook and cranny of this bakery. The coffee is superb and the baked items are nutritional not sugary confections.
