I have bought all bar one of the 8 cars that I have owned in the last 55 years via the second hand market and maintained them myself. Before buying my first car at the age of 17, I read a book on 'How to buy a second hand car' and have used the same basic principles to good effect ever since. I therefore have a practical working knowledge of cars and a realistic view of the risks associated with buying a car this way. I came across the Adam Sendall web page whilst looking for a Volvo XC90. By this stage I had looked at (and crawled underneath) quite a few examples and had gained some useful experience of what to look out for in addition to my other research on the model. The web site has an interesting and eclectic mix of unusual classics through to the basic family car and the more up market models and finally on to the standard builders white van. He obviously has a eye for good cars and a thorough knowledge of his business. The Volvo I looked at was one of the best that I had seen to date and had been exceptonally well prepared with the interior trim in particularly good condition, albeit the basic model. Oddly, the basic trim seems to wear far better with age than the more luxuriously trimmed models. However as an engineer I'm more interested in the mechanical parts of a car particularly the engine. The engine compartment was in good condition and easy to 'read' because it had not been tarted up or steam cleaned. I am always slightly suspiciuos of the super clean engine as its history has been washed away and any leaks are not immediately apparent. Basically, it was a very good car at a very good price with all the necessary paperwork and service records. Having completed all the relevant checks I bought the car. My only reservation was that the car had been on the forecourt for some time and had only done some 500 miles in the last 6 months. It remains a simple fact that cars should be used regularly to avoid problems and modern cars are particularly vulnerable to electrical problems due to dampness if left standing around for any lenght of time. However, given the condition and price it was worth the risk. The car was MOT'd and serviced before I collected it. Of note, Adam agreed to change the cambelt and water pump as these were due for renewal in the near future and declined my offer of paying for the parts required with this additional work. I was impressed. As luck would have it, the car konked out in Tesco's car park about 1 week later and would not start. The indications were that it had an electrical problem within the Engine Control Module. This only goes to show that regardless of the precautions one takes these things can still happen. Indeed, I met someone the other day whose brand new Mazda had konked out with the same problem having just done 67 miles! I phoned Adam the next day and without question or any reference by me to the warranty he asked were the car was and immediately sent a vehicle to collect it. Having confirmed that the problem was the ECM he sent it away to an electrical specialist and returned the car to me at home when the job was done. There have been no further problems and my wife, daughters and grandchildren love the car. As an ex BMW man I. too, am now getting used to driving the 'bus' and really rather like it! Overall, I found Adam to be an very honest and highly reliable dealer with a pleasant and friendly approach. He has a good variety of cars in stock which are not overpriced. More importantly he does have a firm base of returning customers and I would have no hestitation in recommending him to my friends and family.
