I cannot speak highly enough of Shand. The bike that they have hand-built for me is absolutely beautiful, and service has been brilliant.
Having a bit of a wait comes with the "hand-built" territory which didn't bother me — however my frame was built and painted a month ahead of schedule! The guys were very accommodating of my off-menu component spec which included an illusive and only just released groupset that they went to great effort in sourcing.
Throughout the process the staff at Shand kept in touch via email, offering me great advice on sizing, specs and paint finish, whilst also updating me on the progress. They even sent through a few sneak peek photos of the build.
As for the bike — it's gorgeous to look at, the finish is impeccable and it's a whole lot of fun to ride, especially off-road.

Great experience with Shand (and my Shug) the ordering process was great, despite COVID disruptions and issues related to my location in Singapore. Great flexibility along the way as I changed my mind and flawless delivery once manufactured. The bike is all I wanted and more and the quality of the build and finish is noticeably better than other high end bikes in my riding group.

I bought a Stoater from Shand a couple of months ago and I love it. Super ride quality, finish and versatility. I have done anything from long road rides to proper off road adventures and it does both with real ease.
I really like that the whole thing is designed and built in Scotland and because of that you actually get to know the team during the buying process. This is an initial conversation to make sure it's the right bike and then during the build a call to ensure it is set up just right.
There is a slight lead time but given current global supply chain issues for bikes is wager that shand will deliver your bespoke bike in the same time scale as an off the shelf model from elsewhere. Hopefully I'll be back again when I'm allowed to buy another bike 🤣

The most friendly and helpful team I could have ever hoped to have the pleasure of dealing with, a huge wealth of knowledge among their ranks and the bikes they create are absolutely remarkable. The bike they made me reignited my love of cycling, absolutely bombproof construction, impeccable fit and finish, the welds are flawless as is the paintjob. They went the extra mile to make sure each and every last aspect of the bike was tailored exactly to my preferences, could not recommend any higher, worth every penny

A great bike and superb service.
The Shand team are enthusiasts and tremendously knowledgable. The website implies that the bikes are built to a spec - in practice you can change pretty much anything to suit you. So change handlebars, frame, colour, saddle, gears, tyres etc. And, if you have a real deadline when you need the bike, the team will try to help. And it's great that the bikes are really built in the UK.
My Shand Stooshie is superb - I have 700C and 650B wheelsets so I use it for road/gravel and near mountainbike terrain. Good support too when I had an issue with a brake disc.

Shand Cycles Review
I was introduced to Shand by a friend who has a Stoater Rohloff of which he has nothing but praise.
I decided to go for a Stooshie & made contact with Shand, sent in dimensions of myself & my current bike & they suggested a custom build (I never dreamt I was the sort of person that required a bespoke design, but hey ho). Shand furnished me with custom drawings & after a few tweaks came up with a design. All communications was by email & phone so it was with trepidation I went with there offering. On receipt of the bike all I can say is that it is perfect, a bike designed and built for me.
The process from first contact, design, manufacture & delivery was 10 weeks, it was 10 weeks worth waiting.

Bought a Stoater Rohloff from Shand in summer 2019 after visiting their workshop near Edinburgh and going on some test rides. They were super friendly and accommodating and made time to discuss my requirements and figure out sizing and fit.
The bike is fantastic - it is almost as fast as my Bianchi road bike but much comfier. Riding it fast through rush hour London traffic, the disc brakes and bombproof wheels provide a welcome feeling of security and the ability to change gears while stationary really makes a difference. On a century ride on less-than-perfect country road it is comfortable and forgiving. On hour-long VO2max training rides in freezing rain it holds the road well and shrugs off the horrible conditions. I have ridden it about 3,000 miles and the only maintenance I've needed to perform was to tweak the belt tension, which is a 5-minute job with basic tools. The Gates belt drive and Rohloff hub gear work flawlessly and near-silently whether cruising gently or sprinting at 1,400W. The quality of the craftsmanship on the frame and the overall build is top notch.
Shand offers 50/20 or 50/19 gearing as standard and this is probably fine for gravel and trail riding, but if your main use case is riding on road at 20mph+, consider 55/19.
After a recent crash in which a van drove over the bike's front end I sent it back to Shand for repairs and the service was really impressive - they arranged all the transportation and pulled out all the stops to fix it and get it back to me as quickly as possible, including assessments and itemised breakdowns of cost for insurance claim purposes.
Couldn't be happier with the product and the service from Shand.

I have been cycling to work on my new Leveret for a week now. Couldn't be more delighted - Shimano hub gears are a dream and belt drive silent. Feels like a Rolls Royce bike! I collected the bike from Russ at the Redditch workshop and he spent a great deal of time getting the set up just right. First class service.

Shand Cycles first came to my attention a few years ago in a book called ‘The Bicycle Artisans’ by Will Jones (Thames & Hudson). I was struck by the commitment to craftsmanship and philosophy of “simplicity, and a liking for go-anywhere drop-bar Bikes” of this small Scottish company.
I am now, as of one week, the owner of a Shand ‘Stoater’, the model that probably most closely exemplifies that philosophy. I have already ridden more than 350 miles on my new bike, most of which were on a memorable first journey from Shand’s workshop in Scotland to my home in Yorkshire. The Stoater handled the distances, varied terrain and riding surfaces involved with ease, and has kept a smile on my face throughout 😀.
This is a bike that (with front & rear racks) can tour and explore. Stripped down and set up for lightweight bike-packing/randonneur-style endurance riding, the relaxed frame geometry (and hub dynamo on my build) make for long-distance, independent travel. Chunkier and/or tubeless tyre options will open up rougher stuff 🏔 ...as close as you can get to one bike that does everything!
Shand’s approach to ordering and pre-build service means that bikes can be completely customised to individual needs and preference, and it was reassuring & helpful to be able to speak directly with the staff involved in various stages of production. In addition, I was made very welcome during a special visit to the Shand workshop to collect my bike in person.
There is a rich heritage of engineering and design in Scotland, of which Shand Cycles are part. Their bikes combine reliable, traditional materials (steel, in the case of my Stoater) with an innovative approach to bicycle design.
Shand Cycles anticipated the revolution and current vogue for riding drop-bar/built for speed bikes, off-road (AKA ‘Gravel Bikes’). The original and, IMO, best of its genre. ♥️🚲

I've had a Shand Stoater since 2013. A beautiful, do-it-all bike, from a brilliant company who clearly care about their customers. Each time I've reached out for advice they've been more than happy to take the time to help. A great bunch. And did I say how beautiful the bikes are?

Absolutely faultless service - my bike was delayed due to COVID supply chain issues, but throughout the whole process Shand kept me informed and up-to-date. When my bike did arrive it was perfect! Would highly recommend Shand Cycles

Very impressed by Shand. They built a lovely bike, balanced and comfortable. Finish was top quality. They were happy to customise and experiment. Slightly late on timescales but so what.

Top notch frame and bike builders. Can't rate highly enough. Great bunch of chaps.
