This chapel is gorgeous! In 1782 there were 365 Catholics in Belfast but no church. The Presbyterian and Church of Ireland people funded the building of St Mary’s - a fact probably a lot of people don’t know. Mass was first celebrated in 1784. The pulpit was donated by the Anglican Vicar of the church in High Street, Belfast in 1813. Back in the day it was common for a new baby to be baptised in St Mary’s but to go on and worship at the Church of Ireland - another little known fact. Outside there’s a beautiful grotto garden.

A peaceful place to be with the Lord Jesus. Come, let go of your sufferings, and go home with peace. He came down from heaven to take your cross, but in one condition: you must let Him take it and stay loyal to Him.
"For I am not ashamed of the gospel; it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who has faith, to the Jew first and also to the Greek."
Romans 1:16

The most silent place In Belfast. Recover from stress inside this wonderful Church. Admire the artistry of the Italian painters.

A beautiful old fashioned religous osasis in a busy modern city, a peaceful place for a prayer and contemplation you get a sense of how Ireland was mid twentieth century

My wife grew up Catholic and her father being from Belfast was raised Protestant. He never attended the Catholic church’s services with the family so to be in the heart of Northern Ireland and find the most historic Catholic church with an open garden to worship publicly, pray to the patron Saint Mary and light a candle for loved ones was priceless to her. She is missing her father who couldn’t make the trip due to his recent health scare, missing friends who passed within this past year and praying for peace & comfort for anyone suffering from afflictions, grief or suffering during this holiday season. May The Lord Hear Her Prayers. Amen

This church in the heart of Belfast as far as I know is the oldest church in Belfast. Even though it is not my parish I would if possible visit here several times a week. There is a beautiful ambience within this historic building. Often during a busy day of shopping I would find myself drawn to St Marys. Once inside it is somewhat of a little oasis you sometimes forget that you are in the heart of a busy city centre. There is also to the side of the church a beautiful grotto within a lovely garden. If you are visiting Belfast this place is definitely worth a visit. You will not be disappointed. I will add some photos in a future post.

Love this church. So steeped in history and a real sanctuary in the midst of city chaos. The grotto of our Lady of Lourdes is just beautiful!

St Mary's is a little moment of personal peace and tranquility in the city especially during peak shopping times. A beautiful atmosphere inside that hasn't changed in a hundred or so years. The grotto and garden area adjacent also a quiet place to pray or just reflect and walk around.
