A lovely 12th century Church, beautiful exterior interior and a blessing to us all.

Very central and beautiful church with its cleaned exterior tower.
Before the first lockdown went to the pleasant Cafe above church serving until 2.30pm,.Tea in a mug was provided at cost price it seemed, given to us with a smile even just after they stopped serving the usual cake and sandwiches. Caring people obviously volunteers with the church.

A few minutes’ walk from Cardiff Castle this church is in the middle of the central market area is the only per-medieval church in the city center I believe. One can’t miss it walking down Church street. I did not go in, but from the outside one can see some beautiful stain glass windows. Again, coming from the states …Wow a church built in 1180 and still active.
The area has everything shopping, restaurants, pubs, historic sites. A weekend would not be enough time to see and visit everything in Central Cardiff. I post some picks along the avenues around the church

Lovely place to get away from the hustle and bustle of Cardiff. The grounds are really well looked after.

The church is a nice place to visit for a little peace and quiet from the hustle and bustle of the city.
The church provides a calming environment to pray and light a candle.
The grounds of the church is rather small but well maintained. There is a cafe located within the church on the top floor and has a nice selection of food. You will need a key and be a customer in order to use the toilet.
The staff are friendly and welcoming.

I joined this church in the summer (2021) even through the awkwardness of Covid restrictions, everyone has been friendly and welcoming.

Amazing place to visit. History is well preserved here. Grounds are well kept. Beautiful building. Didn't feel any pressure to hurry along as a tourist in an active church (there was no session going on). If you like old churches, this is a great visit.

St John the Baptist Church is a Grade I listed parish church in Cardiff, Wales, the only church dating to pre-Medieval times in Cardiff city centre and the only medieval building other than Cardiff Castle.
The church was built in 1180 as a chapel of ease for the larger St Mary's Church, itself founded by Benedictine monks from Tewkesbury Abbey. Originally constructed of blue Lias, a Jurassic stone with layers of fossilised shells, it was sourced from Aberthaw. The walls were then originally dressed with freestone - limestone sourced from Dundry.
St John's was sacked during a rebellion of Owain Glyndŵr in 1404. The church was rebuilt in the second half of the 15th Century and given a perpendicular tower with a peal of ten bells. Today it still has a crown of openwork battlements, reminiscent of churches in the West Country of England, and is dated c.1490 because of the similar Jasper Tower of Llandaff Cathedral which was built at this time.
After the foundations of St Mary's were destroyed by the Bristol Channel flood of 1607, the two churches were worked as a dual-location parish until all main services were moved to St John in 1620.
In 1843, John Crichton-Stuart, 2nd Marquess of Bute paid for the construction of the Church of St. Mary the Virgin and St. Stephen the Martyr in Bute Street as a permanent replacement for St Mary's. This allowed the reconstruction of St John, with extensions to the church made in 1886–1897 using carboniferous limestone quarried from Culverhouse Cross. The churchyard wall was also rebuilt, using original Lias mixed with red sandstone in the walls, topped with coping stones of Devonian sandstones from the Forest of Dean.

Visited a magnificent brass and voice concert. Overall there's an incredably friendly staff, a bit old fashioned interior and the queue at the ladies bathroom might get long, but the acoustic is just perfect.

You will probably end up passing through it quite a few times during your visit to Cardiff. Give it a few minutes.
Surrounded by pubs, bars, restaurants and shopping centers, it remains a cultural protagonist among the surrounding streets.
