Reviews of The Priory Church of Saint Mary and Saint Hardulph Breedon on the Hill aka Breedon Priory

Absolutely loved visiting here. If you're NOT afraid of a few inclines, I would strongly recommend walking up. When at the top there's a few routes towards the back of the church that i presume will allow for a circular walk but don't hold me to that.

Stunning church and cemetery with beautiful views you could see for miles

Looks amazing from a distance , so thought I would take a drive up , I wasn't disappointed , looks even better up close , inside and out , and the views are fantastic , plus the history up there was mind blowing

Nice place to have a walk around with great scenery it's really nice to sit up there on a summer's day and watch the sunset not far from here is a place called breedon cloud hill quarry and there is a walk route which I've not explored yet I've only walked down it part of the way it has loads of over hanging trees really peaceful too

This gorgeous church is sat on the top of hill where there was once a Neolithic village fort. It is breath taking up here and we'll worth a visit if you are passing by. It is so peaceful and feels far removed from the daily hustle and bustle of everyday life. Used to park here for 20 winks while working. It gives you chance to imagine back to the days of another age. I kid you not !

Gem of a church with a really interesting history. One of the best collections of Anglo-Saxon sculpture in the country, a former Augustinian priory and some interesting 16th/17th century tombs. The hill is good for lane spotting too as it has a great view of East Midlands airport! No facilities, but there is a cafe at the bottom of the hill for you to reward yourself if you park in the village and walk up to the top, passing the Iron Age ramparts on the way.

Wow, several layers of history here. First the site of the remaining church was an Iron Age Fort and in the undergrowth on the side of the hill that has not been quarried away you can still see the impressive ramparts and ditches.
Second, this was the site of an early Anglo Saxon monastery that has now completely disappeared and then there is the remaining church. On the outside not that impressive but inside it has some real treasures. The pews are those old fashioned ones with doors and are quite high sides, almost like opera boxes. There is a fantastic monument to the local gentry, the Shirley family and finally there are the Anglo Saxon carving of fantastic beasts and creatures that were taken from the original Saxon Church. Some of the human figures look to me to be very reminiscent of Byzantine carvings.
The finest carving is that of an angel but the original is not on view being in the bell tower for some reason. I pushed my way in against the Vicars objections to look at it many years ago.
It really is an excellent place to visit, especially on a fine summer day with a fantastic view.

Very picturesque. Its worth noting for those who are put off by the sheer cliff edge next to the church that pain has been taken to ensure not only your safety but also to make it feel like you aren't stood 5 feet from the edge of a cliff 😁

Beautiful church and setting, however very creapy at night seems to be a hideout for young people and doggers at night. Keep an eye out for the steamy windows.

Wow. Amazing. Has to be seen.

Priory church, once 7th Century monastery sits on top of the remains of an iron age hill fort. Church can be seen for miles around and views from the top are excellent on a clear day. Airport and its activity can be seen. Historic interior and varied history make for an interesting visit. Car parking available up top, and you can drive there on the single track road.
M. A.
Very narrow road up to the top with a couple of very tight turns but worth it when you get there.

Look out for the church from the roads as you approach. Situated so high up above a quarry it can be seen from quite a distance. There's parking at the top of the hill. The Saxon carvings around the church date from the 8th-10th centuries. They originally were on the inside and outside walls of the previous Saxon Minster church. The fabric of the church may be of interest to geology fans. Shirley family memorials include references to Saracens and the crusades. You can walk around the hill but paths may sometimes be a bit overgrown but views are stunning.

Excellent place for an historic visit. I've seen it from the A42 many times and had wondered what the view would be from the site. Unfortunately the day I went the mist did not clear. #greatbritishsummer

I don't go for the church, I go for the views. Great spot for photos, walks, whatever. If you're into Jesus then there's a church, so yeah.

For the information of anybody visiting the church the postcode listed is incorrect so don’t follow the one on Google Maps

(Translated) This place looks like a movie. The church is impressive, just like the old cemetery. At night you can feel like a horror movie;) I recommend
