Reviews of St Cuthbert's Church
An extremely interesting gem of a church in a quiet corner of Yorkshire with a splendid Norman arch on the South entrance. Inside is an equally fine Norman font. On the west outside of the tower is a fine carving of St Cuthbert holding the head of St Oswald in his cupped hands (reminding the visitor of our Celtic past). A strange gesture to honour his mentor! Pevsner was also fascinated by this unique church. John Spencer
Visited for the week long exhibition on the life and times of St Cuthbert. Interesting exhibits, well displayed in the ancient church. Exhibition includes casts of sculptures by Fenwick Lawson and a video about his work and is on till 24/03/18.
Stunning early carvings in doorway, sadly slipping away like melting ice-cream so not always clear what they depict, but still make a dramatic and breath-taking impact.
Yesterday I spent a wonderful day at Fishlake Church being guided around by Peter who is so knowledgable. Well worth a visit
