Reviews of St Mary & St David Church
This place is a gem! Absolutely extraordinary piece of work. If you are interested in church architecture or if you are just around the area, I urge you to go and visit it. Located in a small village, surrounded by an idyllic countryside and so peaceful. It dates from about 1140AD and was once adjacent to a Benedictine monastery. It has the most intriguing, elaborated and amazing carvings you will ever see, many of a distinctly un-christian nature. The church itself is unusual for its rounded apse - not a very common element in English parish churches, though not unique by any means. Beautiful and incredible place, totally worth a visit!
Lovely church
Lovely area
Right next door to the castle
And the Kilpeck pub 3 min walk away
Go early morning or later afternoon for the sun angles
Look out for the Sheila na gig
Ladies look away for your own sanity
Spell binding. Such an ancient site-so much history. Marvellous carvings.
What a church! The history in here is rare. I was not expecting to see a Templer church hidden away here on the Herefordshire boarder. How this church has stood the test of time is beyond me. It even sits on the site of an even older Templar church and quite possible it was built on pagan/Celtic place of significant interest as is usually the way.
Went to see Sheela Na Gig. Lovely little Church that was open. Guidebooks were for sale. They're raising funds for a new roof. 15 mins from Hereford.
An architectural wonder! Celtic stone carvings adorn the church doorway and windows and bell tower. There is also the remains of a castle in Kilpeck with a small walk round if you have a dog. If you love history visit the place.
Amazing little church, the carvings are delightful and very quirky. Apparently some of the best of their kind in the country. Inside feels very cosy for a church
Kilpeck church is absolutely worth a little detour to see the remarkable stone carvings around the exterior, including a rare Sheela na gig.
An amazing church built by the Norman's.
Amazingly decorated, unspoiled church, next to quiet castle ruins.
