Reviews of St Mary's Church, Shotley

The resting place of sailors from the Great War, victims of the Spanish Flu and Submariners of the Royal Navy. Great surroundings and historical church.

Go here every year for rememberence service with Shotley Primary school. Always brings a tear in memory of those we have lost that fought for our country.

Interesting church with close links to the sea, and submariners.
Whilst recorded in the Doomsday Survey of 1086 there is no evidence found in the present structure. The present Nave and Aisles were built in 1300 -1300 whilst the Nave roof was raised and Clerestory windows inserted in the1400's with the magnificent double hammerbeam timbers. The tower collapsed in 1638 due to the use of local poor materials which didn't weather well. The graveyard contains the bodies of many naval servicemen whilst the Submariner's memorial serves as a reminder to those people who gave up their lives to serve this country.
