My favourite place
C. J.
One of the most beautiful places in Britain. I always come here when in London and it's one of the best Masses I've ever been to. Definitely recommend everyone comes here to see the Church and the beautiful Lady chapel.
R.
This church turned out to be unexpectedly beautiful. It looks nothing from the outside but inside its not only huge but very impressive too.
Built in 1849, there's not much worth mentioning in it's history really. Pictures are not allowed as its a place of worship but its Baroque architecture begs you to take one.
P. C.
The most beautiful Church I've been to in London. It resembles a Cathedral. Attending to Mass here exults you highly.
S. K.
In my opinion one of the most beautiful RC churches in UK.
Magnificent architecture and an outstanding choral sound
in the true catholic tradition.
d. c.
Very quiet - great place to get away from hubbub of Brompton Road - another visit this late morning (24 Aug) - I was the only person there - they have done a good job with signs, one way system and tons of hand cleaners / wipes...
M. T. d. T.
The most beautiful church in the whole of London. Built at the end of the 19th century for the London chapter of the Oratorian Fathers of Saint Philip Neri, this church has a distinctive Roman flavour, and this by explicit intention of the architect. Especially renown for its choir and the extreme attention for the liturgy, you will be stepping back in time and will be carried immediately to the center of Christendom if you decide to attend a Latin high mass on a Sunday.
O. V.
Amazing cathedral and very friendly atmosphere at an annual Art Salon exhibition organized by Father Charles.
I hope to join it the next year with my paintings.
C. C.
I recommend very much to attend the 11 o’clock Mass on Sundays. It is an indescriptible experience!
M. A.
Beautiful church. Amazing atmosphere.
s. L.
What a beautiful church and what lovely people who are looking after the lock up at night. I was wanting to use the bathroom, they took me , showed me and were so wonderful caring and warm to me.
It really is such a nice change and to be surrounded by this beautiful building inside and out.
Thank you for your kindness.
T. P.
Such a beautiful church

The Brompton Oratory, also known as the Church of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, is located just past the Victoria & Albert Museum on Brompton Road. You can stop here after your visit to the museum. It makes a nice pit stop, before wandering onward to Harrods, Harvey Nichols and other points of interest between the museums and Hyde Park.
The Brompton Oratory is a neo-classical Roman Catholic Church built between 1880 and1884. It was the largest Catholic church in London until Westminster Cathedral was finished in 1903. The exterior of the church resembles a fairly typical Italian basilica, while the interior is Italian Baroque and Renaissance in style. Here you'll find 17th century sculptures, some nice painting, pulpit and alter. Generally speaking, it is quite nice inside the church.
While not as elaborate, decorative or historic as many Catholic churches you may have visited elsewhere in Europe, the Brompton Oratory is a pleasant church to visit in London, if you have energy after your visit to the nearby Victoria & Albert museum.
S. S.
Beautiful place.Shame it needs cleaning of statues interior etc as there seems to be decades of black dust when you examine the interior.
V. D.
We stepped into the church as we were strolling by a year ago today. An unplanned stop on our visit to London. It was breathtakingly beautiful. A quiet place for prayer and to appreciate the antiquities and artistic craftsmanship of old.
R. B.
Very pretty, quiet and freely accessible church. At a stone throw distance from Harrods i did not expect this kind of calmth
M. W.
Amazing, uniquely dignified place. I would recommend a visit for a moment of reflection or to simply catch their breath.
J. F.
Superb Architecture. A calm Oasis in the middle of busy West London.
S. J.
Lovely church. Very
reverent liturgy.
Things are a bit unusual at the moment due to social distancing and other COVID precautions, but making a great effort to keep everyone safe.
Highly recommended for both the beautiful architecture, and for the liturgy.
B. A. M.
I come here because this church makes me feel close to God, its gloom, its candles shining all day long, its silence...
But if you're not catholic but want to see a beauty, don't pass by without entering. It's remind me of an Italian church... Maybe its architectural style, the high ceilings, the paintings,... It's overwhelming!
I feel very calm and relax when I enter here. It's a very nice feeling.
A. G.
Just a beautiful Church that fills my spirit whenever I enter it. This is just one the side alters. A must see for all.
S. D.
Beautiful Catholic Church
G. M.
I had to write a review as before me there were 666 reviews.
It is not only a beautiful Church but the masses there are really worth seeing even if you are not a believer. If you like going to see Gospel celebrations in Harlem, why not attending the sung mass done every Sunday at 11am?
It might or might not be a revelation for you.
This was the way the mass was done since the 16th century, it is very similar to an Orthodox celebration but it is beautifully sung.
D. W.
One of the most beautiful Churches architecturally in London
R. M.
Wonderfull Mass. Beautifull setting. Music...out of this world.
k. f.
Quite simply stunning! The outside gives nothing away. When you enter the vastness of the interior you are immersed in a beautiful, tranquil and above all HUGE space. The several alters are perfectly proportioned. And then you arrive at the main alter. Proportions falter. This cannot be so beautiful and immense. Yet it is. The gloom adds to the unreality. And this is beside the V&A Museum! Unknown and overlooked. Until now perhaps?
J. K.
As a Traditional Catholic, I make it a priority to attend the Latin Mass when I'm in London. The Church of the Immaculate Heart of Mary isn't just one of the most beautiful churches in London, it's one of the most beautiful churches in the United Kingdom. The architectural design is of Italian Baroque and while you have statues and artwork of all the special Saints, this church has a chapel to Saint John Henry Newman - one of England's newest canonused saints and a known Catholic literary figure of the last century. The feeling of being surrounded by different saints exemplifies Catholicism which means Universal so if you're walking in for the first time, do not feel you don't belong, there's a place for you. Upon entering the church, you'll be immersed in beauty and vibrant paradoxes. If you're lucky enough to walk in on a sunny day, pay attention to how sunlight reflects of the perfect geometrical structures illuminating certain regions. When light touches the marble statues of the saints, they luminate and come alive. So, too, when the holy spirit is received, you come alive. Do your utmost best not to focus on taking too many photographs and videos, this church is built on the never dying tradition of the Catholic Church so do away with modernity for a few minutes and let your eyes do the work. If you attend the Solemn Latin Mass, you'll be taken away by the remarkable choir. There are moments when the one hour thirty minute mass feels like a few minutes. If you're just visiting, don't forget to light a candle. God bless you.
E. W. H.
Beautiful church, absolutely stunning. Always like when in London to try to get to Brompton Oratory to lit candles and say prayers.
Definitely worth a visit no matter what your faith just for the architecture
J. R. A.
Latin sung Mass at 11 on Sundays (Novus Ordo, but the "extraordinary rite" every weekday at 8 a.m., on Sundays at 9 a.m., and normally on Saturdays at 11 a.m.). Beautiful music with a professional choir on Sundays. Brilliant sermons. Very easy to go to confession (priests available at various times both weekdays and weekends). Beautiful liturgy with a very devout congregation (including me!).
R. F.
If you have never experienced the wonders of a perfectly executed Catholic mass, do yourself a favor and attend the 11 AM sung mass at the Oratory. Truly a transcendent experience, and it is no exaggeration that I "did not know whether I was in Heaven or on Earth." Counting down the seconds until I can return to London and be encapsulated by such reverent beauty again!
G. a. H.
Amazing place. The photo tells the whole story. Construction started 1880. The architectural style and the atmosphere of the church were deliberately Italianate, in order to bring St. Philip's romanità to nineteenth century London. The present church was restored and redecorated to celebrate its centenary in 1984. Nearest Tube Stations: South Kensington (Piccadilly, District and Circle Lines)
Knightsbridge (Piccadilly Line)
j. b.
Grade II Listed Baroque church, one of 3 oratories in Britain, a formidable and imposing presence.
A resplendent interior dressed with marble, ornate plaster, wood, metal work and rich in accoutrements.
I must confess,
inspiring and quite magnificent
in devotional ornamentation
Home to a renowned choir, choral school and library.
S. M.
Another stunning, historic London building. I have often visited to spend time in the small Chapel to light a candle.
It's a functional church, so it holds regular services. Tourists can visit , but be mindful of those seeking quiet and prayer.
It's just as impressive inside as it is outside. It's right next door to the V&A as well as within reach of other musuems. There are many cafes and restraunts in the area.
Defiently worth a visit, especially if you need time out and time for reflection. 🕯 ♥ ➕
K. T.
Beautiful church, but Latin Mass was done so quickly once, that it felt almost as weakly done novus ordo. That's sad, but despite that, it is still really beautiful. I'm grateful for welcoming a rosary reparation every year. We will meet again this week! So excited!
M. W.
Wonderful church. Great choir. Latin Mass every Sunday at 11am.
M. D.
A beautiful and ornate church with lots of little aspects to explore. We popped in on our way to the Science Museum and we will be popping again next time we are in South Kensington. A very peaceful break in a hectic day and the little one surprisingly enjoyed it a lot too.
B. P.
Beautiful church. Very nice to look around.
D. S. &. A.
Beautiful building that inspires dedication to God's work on this earth and in heaven... In Jesus's name Amen.
V. M.
Very peaceful and beautiful.
G. B.
Beautiful Church; very accomodating clergy and staff, lovely Mass and services. No tamborines or guitars! The choir is amazing too
T. T. o. R. L.
A nice place to observe. However, be warned that they're unfriendly when it comes to taking photos or videos of the place and if you're carrying a backpack. Strangely, you get asked to leave your stuff somewhere and you can't move around. Would have been an amazing experience if the people there were friendlier.
M. D.
Impressive church with great exteriors and beautifully decorated inside. It is worth a visit
S. J.
Possibly the most beautiful Roman Catholic church in the UK. Mass is said several times a day both in the old and new rite mainly in Latin which is such a special experience. The 9am Sunday Mass is said in the Extraordinary Form and the 11am Sunday Mass is fully sung and again in Latin. They hold excellent lectures and talks along with discussion groups, lessons and a range of volunteering opportunities such as helping the homeless or elderly. Don't forget to check out the shop just outside the church for a selection of books etc.
J. K.
More than a church , it’s more like entering a cathedral . With very high domed roofs . There are several side chapels that a regular church would be happy to have as their main altar . If you enjoy visiting churches then this has to be included in any visit to London ..
K. J.
It's not that old as it looks like but it's still one of the most beautiful churches in London. No photos and videos are allowed inside.
C. R.
If you want to attend solemn Latin or Tridentine Mass this historic Church is the place to go. The side Chapels are beautiful and when there are no services in progress, it is a very peaceful and holy place for private prayer and reflection. Renowned for its three choirs.
Please note that since June 2018 the 10.00am weekday Mass (Mon-Fri) has been suspended until further notice
D. Z.
Beautiful Roman Catholic church. Exquisite art and fine architecture with a uniquely dignified atmosphere. Very peaceful to just quietly admire everything around.
B. O.
I'm not very religious but I love this place. It's all so unashamedly camp and theatrical! Superb choral music and so much cheaper than going to the opera! Just a shame there isn't a bar for the interval!
A. B. S.
Beautiful and peaceful church. There are many small chapels all around where you can stop and contemplate pieces of art or just meditate.
C. S.
Amazing church. One of the few places in central London that seemingly blocks a very noisy world. A noticeable number of Italian expats also visit for Sunday service.
T. M.
Although a Londoner for 35 continuous years and practising Roman Catholic, I'd never visited until today and the experience was wonderful (Sunday 11.00 a.m. Latin rite Mass 07.08.16). The music was all I could have hoped for, despite it being the holiday season. The congregation had a chance to join in at specified points, the traditional way. I hope to go more often, to take friends, Christian and otherwise, and to attend the after-Mass tea/coffee gathering after the August recess.
N. V. O. C.
Nice to visit The Oratory where I served for a while and where I was married and the children were baptized Saw Fr Charles this visit
T. P. D.
Beautiful place for art & history lovers + an amazing community for practising Christians.
T. A. K.
It's a very beautiful church, very peaceful, I always go there when feeling down to pray and light up a candle. I love this place.
M. C.
Came here for the earliest morning mass that I could find at 7am. There are several chapels where mass could be held and God sent an angel to us when an elderly lady motioned to us and said; go to the far right side and that's where you'll find daily mass. May God bless her and the people of London.
A. L.
Lovely mass in Maundy Thursday this Easter, I will visit more often. Fantastic.
k. c.
we have a Christmas carol singing inside the church, with great choirs leading the whole activities with the audience , modern and well furnished, with a trinity church in contrast, historical and more proper and prim
A. S.
I attend mass hear on Sundays. Not as interactive as some of the others but the building, in particular, is extraordinarily beautiful.
M. M.
There are a few Polish Churchs in London. But the location of this one is definitly the most convinient. The Church is nearby Natural History Museum, Sience and V&A Museum. The interior of the Church is in Old, classic style. There are the relics of three saints in the Church. And anyone can feel welcome to pray because the priests are very friendly and open minded.
s. s.
Beautiful church... Holy latin mass
M. F.
It is really impressive when you enter the church. From the outside it looks a bit nondescript but if you enter it it is just WOW. All the details you can find. Even the herringbone parquet looks amazing.
J. M.
Also known as Brompton Oratory, it is a large Catholic church located in Knightsbridge. The Victoria and Albert museum is adjacent. The church is quite cathedral like and was founded by the recently canonised St Cardinal Newman. It has a very fine choir.
M. D.
Stunning church, and the traditional atmosphere with Latin Mass was beautiful to witness. In all, I found it a deeply spiritual experience
V. A.
Beautiful building inside-out. Worth stopping by & checking it out (by mindful service times)
M. P.
A large and imposing Italianate Baroque church sited next door to the Victoria and Albert museum in South Kensington and in the same road as Harrods, the Brompton Oratory is home to the Fathers of the Congregation of the Oratory who run this thriving parish.
Famed for its liturgical tradition and the quality of the Choral music, the Oratory is open all day for quiet prayer and visits. There are lots of daily masses and the choir sings at the principal Sunday services.
Most definitely worth a visit if you find yourself in the Knightsbridge/South Kensington areas
G. M.
First visited c.2008, when I knew v. Little about Catholicism. I knew about it from the
Nick Cave song since 1997. Took my breath away really "What! This is amazing why isn't it world famous?! " only 2nd catholic church I'd been in after Westminster cathedral. Well it had a profound effect and I got really interested in, even obsessed with catholic church etc. A kind of madness really with both good & bad points. I was baptised & confirmed RC Easter 2012, don't go now for complex reasons. May return one day (if they'd have me) . Anyway it was all sparked by this magnificent baroque 'temple' with an extravagant, severe yet peaceful 'vibe'
G. G.
This is one of the most beautiful places on Earth. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is celebrated in both the Novus Ordo and the Tridentine rites - both rites with utter dignity and solemnity, and as far as I can tell, no liturgical abuses as can be found in most Catholic churches nowadays. This is the church where I was received back into the Catholic Church after being lapsed for over a decade. Even my non-believer friends and relatives can attest to the power and majesty of this place and the manner in which the Sacred Mysteries are celebrated here.
K. B.
Lovely mass!
Always a grand pleasure。
S. P.
Amazing experience.

L. B.
A beautiful piece of architecture in central London. For those who are religious I would hope it provides comfort and for everyone else it is a stunning part of the cityscape.
j. c.
Went to the Solemn Latin Mass 11:00 am. Sunday. Fantastic experience. Best choir I've ever heard by a mile.
M. M. C.
We were married in St Wilfred's chapel on 12 August 2000. Beautiful ceremony in magnificent chapel in The Oratory.
U. E.
We went to sung Latin Mass here in this beautiful Italianate church, built in the 19th century. Well worth a visit even if you aren't religious.
P. M. A.
You can pray here quately.
T. S.
Inspired to visit by a Nick Cave song. It's a very serious building with some interesting architecture. Well worth a visit.
T. C.
To say it is just a Wonderful oratory is to underrate the greatness of God in the history of man. In fact, God's presense is felt from the structure to all that is used in it. How wonderful it is when mass is celebrated in it
p. c.
Absolutely breathtaking and dripping with history. I could spend hours just looking at the art work but sadly it was a wedding and time did not permit.
S. K.
Best church I’ve ever been to, so glad I was lucky enough to go here as a child, will be returning soon
C. L.

My favourite Roman Catholic Church in London .
The service on Sunday 11am is fantastic for family.
S. W.
Very peaceful, beautiful interior.
D. H.
I only ever come here for midnight mass. And much more for the beautiful choir than the ramblings of an old man in a dress. Stunningly self-indulgent architecture.
W. M.
Lovely old church with lots of history
B. K.
Grand place for everyone . The best in the world in fact .
A. P. H.
Gorgeous church with solemn and dignified liturgies to match. The Oratory priests celebrate both the Novus Ordo Mass and the Traditional Latin Mass with great reverence.
P. M.
It looked really smashing as we drove past. I fancied it might be the the arc du triomphe but my girlfriend said don’t be silly that’s in Paris. So I looked it up on google. The google description is accurate. So well done everyone.
T.
Powerful solemn vesper and procession of the Blessed Sacrament . Enjoyed it
M. R.
It feels like being in Italy. Good art. It's a church though, and religion is bad news anyway, but the building is worth a visit.

Most amazing and beautiful church I have ever been in. Absolutely massive and so tall to the ceiling. It is incredible. Which is why it is such a shame that there is no photos or video allowed ever. I think they could add a few hours a day for tourists to come and take pictures. Because of this being a non touristy place there was barely any people there which was nice.

(Translated) Beautiful neoclassical Catholic church, built in the 19th century in the Brompton - Knightsbridge area. Also known as the London Oratory. Provides mass in Latin and English. Place often used for concerts.

(Translated) The Oratory is the place where Cardinal Newman was active. His modest monument is nearby. The church itself has a Baroque décor and is similar to the Italian temples. After watching Anglican protestant temples, here you can experience the sacred beauty. And find time to pray in one of the chapels. Actually, this is the first church in London where I met people immersed in prayer
(Original)
Właściwie to pierwszy kościół w Londynie w którym spotkałem ludzi zatopionych w modlitwie

(Translated) The oratory is a Catholic church. It is a gem well hidden behind its majestic facade. A beautiful place to gather away from the noise of the city and admire the sumptuous architecture.
(Original)

(Translated) Have you planned to go shopping at Harrods and continue to the Victoria and Albert Museum? So, seeing that you pass by and you can not not see it, why not enter this beautiful Catholic church of the late '800, Baroque style and with a dome? The entrance costs nothing, it's free!
Although it is all English, from the client to the architect, here is the imprint of Italian art and Catholic devotion. Nothing empty like the reformed churches, here we are surrounded by statues of saints, stucco altars and lit devotional candles, in short here there is warmth. It's really beautiful.
(Original)

(Translated) I find this Church while walking to the museums. Full of peace and beauty. Each chapel carefully maintained. Be sure to contemplate the marble sculpture of the oratory in the background on the right. Who does it represent? I knew it. Beautiful place to pray. Do not stop looking at the Blessed Virgin from above, before entering.
(Original)
A quien representa? Lo so supe.

(Translated) A unique place for our spirit. In the quiet atmosphere of the walls of this church, God speaks to us the loudest!
The only place in all of England, and probably all of Western Europe, where there are relics of the first degree of Saint Charbel and you can be blessed after Sunday service with graces famous for the oils from the saint's tomb. The relics are looked after by the pastor of the Polish parish of Saint Wojciech.
(Original)
Wyjątkowe miejsce dla naszego ducha. W cichej atmosferze murów tego kościoła Bóg mówi do nas najgłośniej!
Jedyne miejsce w całej Anglii i prawdopodobnie całej zachodniej Europie gdzie znajdują się relikwie pierwszego stopnia świętego Charbela i można po niedzielnym nabożeństwie zostać pobłogosławionym łaskami słynącymi olejami z grobu świętego. Relikwiami opiekuje się proboszcz polskiej parafii świętego Wojciecha.

(Translated) Mass is celebrated with due faith and veneration. The faithful who gather here are genuinely immersed in prayer. One of the last such place in London.
(Original)
Jedno z ostatnich takich miejsce w z Londynie.

(Translated) For the devotees of Newman and the revival of English Catholicism, this London church imitating the Roman style (even with the same statue of Saint Peter in bronze) is too much: everything brings back memories of that glorious time.
There is a good schedule for masses, but in addition the church is normally open to the public.
Its grandeur is surprising, but also its strangeness within the English environment, due to its marked Italianate style.
It was built by the alterego of Card. Newman, William Faber, converted to Catholicism at the same time as Newman, and who chose the Oratory of San Felipe Neri as a place for his priestly vocation.
A very fruitful enmity that of these two characters.
(Original)
