Reviews of St Bartholomew the Great
B. T.
London’s oldest parish church, with interesting history through the ages - check out the Oriel window, The lady Chapel (also the location where Benjamin Franklin’s printing press career started). More recently, it’s also been used as a filming location for many big films like Four Weddings and a Funeral, Shakespeare in Love, and Elizabeth the Golden Age.
It’s free to enter, though donations appreciated. It’s very peaceful inside and worth a 20-30 minute walk through
D. L.
Beautiful, working, Anglo-Catholic church. Built in the time of King Henry 1. Suffered after the dissolution of 1539, but restored in the mid 1800's. Tucked away - seek it out !
J. M. P.
London’s oldest working church about to celebrate its 900th anniversary. So atmospheric and beautiful. Located spitting distance from Smithfield meat market this wonderful church retains many original features from the twelve hundreds and has some really helpful curation along the way. Loved it!
C. M.
Amazing to think this building is near 1000 years old. Wonderful atmosphere, traditional services with bells and incense, lovely choir, refreshments covid permitting in the old cloisters.
M. P.
A very old church, you certainly step back in time when you enter.
Very atmospheric, with its dark walls, and columns.
The Damian Hurst sculpture is magnificent, but somewhat disturbing after you read the information.
Well worth a visit.
R. L. U.
An amazing old church you can pop in and wander around.
There are lots of points of interest around the church so it was quite interesting to read the signposts of information. It’s also really beautiful!
I spent around 20 minutes here and enjoyed my visit a lot. Thank you
A. K.
Almost 900 years old, this church has a unique atmosphere taking you right back into the early middle ages. A really special place that always amazes me.........
C. S.
Very pretty and quaint church, and the choir and organist were sounding great
T. B.
The oldest church currently in use at London, is well worth a visit. Full of history, going through various periods of construction. Sight of several well known movie scenes
T. P.
Such a fabulous Church
Deep in history
hidden in the back streets of London
R. P.
Atmospheric church giving a real feeling of the history of this iconic building
E. C.
My favorite church in London, a true place of contemplation. Their day music concerts are a must! It is hidden so easy to miss but when you find it, it will be totally worth it!
V. L. G.
Hidden gem! Lots of history in this church, and it’s a very peaceful place (and one of the rare smaller church that remains open to public).
Damien Hirst fans will find an exquisite sculpture here.
S. E. W.
Truly amazing and historic church. One of the most atmospheric buildings you will ever visit. A warmth, a wrap around energy. Truly a remarkable place to spend some time.
N. B.
This church dating from 1123 is possibly one of the oldest churches in London. It has tons of history and is an amazing old building. Very well worth the £5 visitors fee. The tiny gatehouse leading to the church is also amazing. Dating from 1240 this narrow gate house is straight out of fairy tales.
Y. R.
I was on a quest for exploring haunted places in London, when my search came across a church billed as the most haunted and oldest church in London. I was sold immediately. As, I enjoy going to churches in the places I visit, as well as the paranormal. This was a two in one deal- fantastic!
Walking into one of London’s oldest parish church, St Bartholomew the Great (Great St. Bart’s), one will find it truly a gem hidden in Old London. Once you enter you are greeted with the lingering smell of incense and architectural wonder. The atmosphere in this medieval church dating back to 1123 of its foundation filled every molecule of my being with such a sense of spiritual serenity, unexpected of me, tears began to fall from my eyes.
The beauty of this place survived through the tumultuous periods of London, from the Great Fire of London 1666 to the Second World War. Great St. Bart’s has stood fast through the test of time.
Inside the arches of the church display an impressive workmanship of gothic architecture. From the vestibule looking towards the front- the nave flanks the aisle with medieval cylindrical pillars serving as its backdrop leading up the sanctuary. In the sanctuary you find the ceiling ascends towards the heavens as the windows allow the soft glow of the midday sun to spill through. Looking back towards the choir stand, you will see the organs of Great St. Bart’s. Behind the great alter, lays the Lady Chapel, and throughout your exploration of the church- paintings, sculptures, and plaques where people slumber in eternal rest in the dark interiors of the church.
This medieval wonder was truly mine to enjoy without the overbearing crowds of some of the more touristy places. I spent the whole afternoon relishing in the atmosphere of St. Bart’s to myself, I admit I left bragging to everyone back home how my hands touched the medieval times. I look forward to returning to St. Bart’s on my next visit.

just in the heart of the City of London you come across this beautiful piece of historic heritage. 800+ year old, this church survived the Reformation, Great Fire of London and now is still an active parish church where you can enjoy the peaceful atmosphere today.
Do not miss the opportunity to visit one of the oldest surviving building in London that contains pieces of Norman, Tudor and later architecture styles.
Interesting fact - William Wallace was executed just near the church
M.
This church is a hidden gem. Gorgeous architecture and atmosphere. It will quench your thirst for medieval times. The only downside are the modern looking like "art" objects randomly located here and there which are very much detracting from the otherwise fantastic experience. There is also a hideous Damien Hirst statue which feels totally out of place and is a true eyesore. Very good if you ignore those 2 pain points as it's a truly wonderful place otherwise.

The Church of St Bartholomew the Great is an Anglican church in the Smithfields Part of London. This ancient church is nearly a 1000 years old and built is a Norman Romanesque style with great examples of Oriel windows. All the restoration work over the decades and centuries having been done sympathetically with the original styling. The church gets a lot less touristy footfall and combined with the restored architecture, makes the visit so much more atmospheric.
There's a £5 entrance fee which I feel is a bit high for a visit that would last about 30 minutes. The staff at the front are friendly and helpful. On entry, you're provided with an information sheet and a little bit of advice on where to start the visit. The visit should start in the cloister where there's a lot of information about the history of the church. Which I found very informative and interesting, and well worth the effort get a sense of the history of the church to fully appreciate just how ancient the church is. Inside, the church isn't as richly decorated as I thought it would be, but there a truly outstanding sculpture Damien Hirst of St Bartholomew as well as exceptionally exquisite artwork near the Pulpitum, below the organs.
For film fans, the church is has also featured in Four Weddings and a Funeral and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.
C. B.
Wonderful old historic beautiful church. Features in several movies. Well worth a visit.
R. K.
Magnificent old church, definitely worth to visit.
N. K.
I accidentally discovered this place and was very lucky that I did that. Even they charge £5 for the entrance, it's worth that price. The guy on the entrance gave me nice introduction to the history of the church. I don't know how much it has been changed during the centuries but it does really look like 9 centuries old object. The whole church is full of items from its history and you have that feeling like you're in the museum, not just church. There is also Damien Hirst's statue which I found bit disturbing (like all other his works) and I am still not sure if it should have the place there. But I highly recommend this place if you want to find peaceful spot in the busy Farrington area.
T. g.
Only way to describe it "hidden gem" . This incredible church is tucked away so well you can easily miss it. If you find it, go in. The young lady at the front was super nice and full of great facts. The interior is stunning and packed with history, whole heartedly recommend.
M. D. L. C.
Magnificent Charles Dickens Carol ligth service!! Wounderfull reading performance of the Story and absolute superb 👏 choirs with costumes etc... we will be back next year and maybe visit sometime....
A. F.
This almost 900-year old Anglo-Catholic church is one of the best hidden gems in London. There is an entrance fee but it was worth it. The church is small and tranquil. One could just smell the history of the St Bartholomew the Great!
M.
Beautiful church was founded in 1123.
We were there on Ester service.
Highly recommended
M. S. (.
An elegant and quiet church with a lot of history. Memorials and statuary from the ages of our ancestors
M. M.
Amazing old church. Atmospheric and quirky - you don't expect it from the entrance. Well worth a visit.
A. B.
I attended a special service on the 2nd of November called "All Souls' Day" for the faithful departed and I was deeply impressed by the solemnity of the sermon and Mozart 's Requiem was interpreted beautifully by the choir.
M. G.
The history and luminal nature of this place moves me every time I visit
A. A.
London hidden gem, a wonderful small church from the XII century, just 5 minutes walk from Saint Paul. Location for many movies from Elizabeth, to Sherlock and Avengers. Very very beautiful and not to miss.
L. H. C.
Fabulous church at the ❤ of the city of London, the oldest and exquisite architecture - from the facade to the interior, timeless resists in its grandeur. Located in one of the most ellegant and important areas of London. Its parish is also very contemporary, it offers online services - podcasts and youtube. A must visit. A small fee for visits is charged to help the maintenance of the church which is very expensive. Easy access to wheelchair.
L. C.
Probably the oldest church of London, the Norman architecture of the twelfth century and the whole medieval strong structure give to this church an impressive atmosphere. I'd recommend a visit during a service: the choir is amazing, prayers and liturgy return this old place to life!
S. H.
Wonderful exhibit of Norman architecture. Novelty value is the number of well known films and dramas filmed on site. Admission fee a bit steep at £5 for adults.
M. L.
Is London’s oldest parish church, founded in 1123, survived the great fire of 1666 and both world wars. Is a gem in the city with great romanesque architecture. In this church has been part of films such as Four weddings ans a funeral, Shakespeare in Love, The end of the affair, Amazing Grace, Elizabeth: the golden age and The other Boleyn Girl. Simply beautiful.
L. M.
Very old church amazing architecture and lots of information available.
T. M.
Wonderful building and art, fantastic music in a finely spiritual church
d. c.
Lovely, very old - arguably oldest in London church. You can just sense history when you sit quietly... shame they charge entrance!
J. F.
Definitely a place to go, very beautiful i was impressed. Only £5 entrance but worth the money
j. b.
What remains is a composite of the Centuries with intact fabric segments both internal and exterior dating from the C12 onwards.
The choir, oriel window and medieval tomb especially noteworthy.
Dedicated to a Saint, often portrayed carrying his flayed alter ego and appropriate for a a precinct historically associated with blood, suffering and death.
Hereabouts the brutal, the aesthetic and the scientific merged, cheek by jowl in a gruesome congenital embrace - the slaughter of animals, the torture and executions of humans and medical succour.
Here you will pay the price for admission, its probably worthwhile but no skin off my back.
M. B.
Awesome ancient church should be made a priority on the list of buildings to visit in the Capital.
The admission ticket is worth every penny and staff are friendly.
M. P.
A lovely church to visit with friendly helpful staff. Very old with quite a bit of history. Well worth visiting.
A. P.
With this review,I take again,as said before, the tour of the churches of London, more mown or less to the tourist and that I did in times prior to this particular period. In this review,I described the church of St. Bartolomeo the Great of London. This is but an Anglican Church in the city of London, built near Smithed,in the ward of Farmington without. This sacred place in known not only for its rich history, but above all for its exceptional architecture in Norman style. It was built at first,as an Augustinian convent in the year 1123 and overtime, it’s been catalogued by scholars as the oldest church in this city; so much so that the competent authority, added it among “Classified Monuments “.The tourist,as soon as he is inside this church, can immediately notice the baptismal font that area back .To 1405 and it’s one of the only specimens of the city, dating back to the pre- Reformation period.Mendes you can see a majestic arch of the twelfth century, The only remaining example of the southern gate that connects the nave of the church. Luckily for all of us lovers of ancient history, this precious monument, managed to survive to the great fire of London of 1666 and not ..... resisted also and miraculously, the constant bombing of the city of the two Great World Wars.As a conclusion of the review,I can only advise you to go and see it .
D. W.
Really nice place to here Christmas carols in a very old church.
M. O.
If you can, book a guided tour as well. Very informative.
If not, it's still a wonderful place to look round. Romanesque, Gothic and Victorian (!) parts, with actual cloisters as well.
M. G.
One of the finest medieval buildings still standing in London. Beautiful.
I. M.
Went to an evening concert. Very atmospheric as the light faded. Nice acoustics.
D. A.
An absolutely wonderful find ... hidden gem in the City of London. London's oldest parish church with beautiful architecture and stained glass. Well worth a visit.
F. K.
Great place, I attend a Christmas carols concert. Worth a visit
J. B.
Came across this church today.
Enjoyed a quiet walk around.
Sitting down for short time to reflect on our world today
R. W.
Atmospheric Church, is well worth visiting with its interesting checker board patterned walls, there is a small charge to visit.
J. M.
One of the very best City churches. Wonderful Norman architecture.
P. S.
This is the second oldest building in London still in use and is amazing. It’s well worth the £4 admission and the cafe is a treat. It’s absolutely amazing, a real jewel hidden away in a secluded location. Fantastic good Friday bun ceremony too! Easy to miss, but if you find it you’ll never want to leave and you’ll remember it forever.
T. M.
Lovely church, definitely worth a visit
P.
Definitely worth a visit. A place steeped in history. Very friendly people welcoming you at the entrance
A. W.
Wonderful bit of British history takes some finding as it is tucked away in a yard next to Smithfield Market but worth the effort as it dates from 1123 but has led a very troubled existence since, with parts demolished being ransacked and then used for other purposes. Restored in the 19C the surviving building is a time capsule of medieval architecture.
L. M.
This is a lovely place to visit on a nice sunny day, the scenery in the shaded gardens makes it an excellent place to relax and enjoy a cold drink and maybe a picnic. There are plenty of restaurants and cafes near by including one on site which I didn’t visit, I was just there for the pretty buildings and to chill out for a little while.
j. h.
What an amazing surprise. So much history in the architecture.
T. F.
Wonderful church. Well worth spending an hour or so exploring every nook and cranny. The Damien Hurst statue is a bit gruesome but fascinating and blends into its surroundings seamlessly. I get great pleasure freaking people out by telling them about the plague mound just outside but that's just me.
If you like this review please give me a thumbs up.
R. D.
This is one of London's few remaining truly ancient buildings. A visit is an absolute must for anyone interested in history. Go, allowing enough time to really take it in. Note, there is a modest admission charge. And beware, as with any church access is sometimes restricted for events like weddings.
M. D. T.
Visited for the Christmas Fair , Very historical church , nice old features, stalls were good , but the place lacked lighting for the stalls so couldn't see what you are buying. I don't think the Minister or congregation were very welcoming or very Christian , think they need to work on their warmth and attitude for the general public.
V. P.
Possibly one of the oldest and most beautiful churches in London. A must see for movie fans - Four Weddings and a Funeral, Shakespeare in Love, The Other Boleyn Girl are all filmed here.
R. W.
It's a nice church off the beaten track
G.
One of the most beautiful and spectacular churches I’ve seen. Absolutely beautiful, we were lucky enough to arrive during an organ practice, the sound echoing through the walls was almost ghostly.
N. D.
The oldest church in the centre of London dating from the 11th century. So much history can be seen by walking through the church and reading the memorials. The program of wonderful events includes some really amazing choir recitals.
R. D.
I have always loved this church, it's long darkness and rounded romanesque arches, the patchwork of overlapping brickwork and stone, the curved ambulatory the darkness the smell. Shame you have to pay to go in nowadays to make contact with what feels like the ancient of days. And the darkness and the.mystery and silence at the heart of things.
c. d.
Very,very God.
P. B.
Beautiful Church inside and out. I've been to a couple of the Easter services, which are very moving and gives you a real sense of the importance St Bartholomew still holds for people today. The Parish is one of the oldest with a long history unique to this part of London. I've sure the Christmas Eve service must be very special.
W. R.
Spectacularly beautiful church with fascinating inscriptions. The ceremony I attended was strongly high church smells and bells, which I prefer but I know isn't to everyone's taste. Very good choir.
R. J.
This church is everything an old church should be, and ore besides. It's the oldest parish church in London (founded in 1123) and you just sense the history the moment you step through the door. It does cost £4 to go in but you won't regret it. You may have seen it in films too as it's been used as a location in Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes, and in Four Weddings and a funeral to name just two movies. But it is the history that makes it worthwhile, and the place is steeped in it.
O. K.
The most beautiful church in London without a doubt. So much history surrounding it since it is in one of the only areas in London not damaged by the great fire. The thirteenth century gate house is stunning and the tomb of Rahere is well worth a visit.
S. B.
Interesting building dating back to Norman Times.
S. N.
Lovely historic church. Been a parish church since the 11hundreds
S. A.
While on an Original London Walk, we stopped here. So glad we did! If I had gone past on my own, I would never have gone thru the gateway. I was totally enchanted with this church and every time I get to London, I go back, just to sit and contemplate and soak in all the atmosphere. One of the most peaceful places I have ever been. A real jewel.
J. R.
The oldest Parish church in London! Once you step inside, you get a s great sense of calmness, grandeur and positive energy. Well worth experiencing and telling people about it.
N. S.
I've been to the evensong service (every Sunday at 6:30pm) here twice on a couple of separate visits to London. Very Anglo-Catholic, so if that's your thing, this service is a great way to experience the church. The choir is phenomenal.
A. N.
Old school pub with racy adverts.
I. L.
My favourite church in London.
A. N.
Incredibly friendly volunteers on site. A captivating building, well lit in keeping with the locations historic character. Lots of information about the site, with some interesting art work.
L. F.
This church has become famous after being the set of some scenes of the movie "Four weddings and a funeral" starring, among the others, Hugh Grant and Rowan Atkinson.
Surely the normand architecture is breathtaking, it really feels like a jump in the past.
M. S.
A jewel of History and faith in Britain, started by the Augustinians in early 1100s as London’s oldest parish church now hold Anglican services of high veneration
H. T.
A 12th century church hidden in the middle of the financial center of the city. There's an old graveyard and greenspace, as well.
C. J.
One of my fav spots in London... Quite hidden and as it’s close to St. Paul it doesn’t attract too many tourist but I highly recommend to visit it... The light and the environment are incredible, a perfect place for photographers and also if you are looking for a quiet place ...
S. S.
If you like old churches, this is a great stop while in London. Lovely old church with a lot of history amongst its walls. My children also loved seeing the old church.
n. r.
Wow what a place, history - and amazing ambience.
N. M.
Saw Jonathan Antoine perform at this, the oldest church in London...feel very grateful for the experience. Can't share a photo...but it's a simple, small, beautiful church.
v. k.
Excellent food, best prices
J. D.
Wonderful history mixed with pieces of contemporary art
R. S.
Wonderful atmospheric church with a wealth of history. Entrance for 'just a visit' is charged, but worth it for those interested in the history of the area and impact of the dissolution of the monasteries.
P. T.
Black-and-white, positively ancient and spooky tiny church with a pretty good coffee shop in the garden. It looks a bit out of place with the strong Normandy architecture, yet that's what makes it so charming.
S. N. S.
Because we had got lost, we ended up at this church. It turned out to be a less known gem. It's not as shiny as the churches in the touristic aerea, but this is exactly what made me feel more connected to its history. We were warmly greeted an the entrance and afterwards had a really good fresh brewed coffee at the cafè.
S. K.
Been there on a Sunday morning right after the service. Still incense in the atmosphere, sunbeams unsuccessfully trying to brighten the case. No, it's official, this church is really spooky and unwordly. Great!
D. J.
One guide told me that it is still on the level old London streets were at. Then streets were elevated but Church remained where it was, thats why it is 3 feet below the ground level.
Next to it is one of the buildings that survived London fire.
R. T.
This is a very special church. Founded in the 12th century, it survived both the Great Fire and the Blitz. Described by John Betjeman as having the finest Norman interior of any church in London.
C. P.
Might claim to be London’s oldest church, but these days London is much larger than it used to be...still, a very beautiful and historic place to visit and to pray in.
R. M.
Surprisingly ancient, ornate, and interesting. (I've seen a LOT of churches) Benjamin Franklin worked for a time in a print shop in part of the church.
E. B.
A real piece of history. Dating from the early 12th century, St. Bartholomew's story is ingrained with the history if London and in particular the history of medicine around the world. Get beyond the slightly intimidating entrance and a fascinating history of London, English and medical history unfolds. The medical bit comes from the abbey to which the church originally belonged grew in time into St. Barts. hospital.
What you find us a fascinating time capsule of early 12th century architecture.
B. E.
Worth a visit. They also do tours.
A. L.
Quiet but beautiful church. It is the second oldest church in London. £5 entrance fee for tourists is pretty reasonable.
P. T.
Very interesting, lots of changes through the ages if you take the time to look.
J. G.
Find the churchyard by ducking through an old stone archway or wiggle along tiny backstreets. 41-42 cloth fair reportedly oldest house in city of London survived great fire.
N. D.
If you like searching you'll love finding St. Bart's! It is tucked away behind modern buildings, so you'll feel like you've stepped into some other era. Loved it!
p.
Nice old place... Quite and very peaceful. Two mins from the Smithfield market...
F. B.
Amazing place to visit in London!
D. j.
Oldest London Parish church. Originally built as much larger priory.
A. D.
Beautiful church, very interesting and so much history to explore. Opening times: Sun 8.30am-8pm, Mon- Fri 8.30am-5pm, Sat 10.30am-4pm. Well worth a visit if in the area, it's next to the St Bartholomew Hospital and by Smithfield Market, about 10 minute walk from Farringdon or Barbican stations. There is a Cloisters cafe too which you don't have to pay to go in, serving tea/coffee etc and cakes.
M. P.

(Translated) One of the oldest churches in London and well worth a visit. The scent in the church is particularly exciting.

(Translated) The oldest surviving church in London, founded in 1123. It is about a 5-minute walk from the subway Farringdon or Barbican station. There is a fairly large St. Bartholomew Hospital nearby, but the entrance to the church has to enter an alley with small gates that are a bit overlooked. It's a tranquil atmosphere with a solemn or solemn feel of history, and the medieval era remains there. The church is also famous for where Sherlock Holmes and Watson meet and is a film location. Admission fee is payable by card, photography is OK in the hotel, and the London Museum is within walking distance. Come and love the oldest.

(Translated) I had never been to an Anglican church, we even attended a trade. Very nice to see how women and men share the work equally. The place is not ostentatious, very humble, as expected of a church. The organist a machine.
And the patio is worth a visit because it is in a historic but brutal place.

(Translated) The entrance is easy to miss from the street as it is a narrow entrance. Only the historical-looking exterior shows the way to the church, if you have at least inquired in advance.
Unfortunately, we had the misfortune that on the one hand it rained heavily on that day and unfortunately not all areas of the church were accessible due to construction work.
In return, we had the wonderful opportunity to listen to a choir rehearsal that was taking place at that time.
That brought us closer to the wonderful acoustics and the quality of the choir.
Wonderful!!
We would have loved to visit and see the memorial plaque for William Wallace ... but unfortunately the construction work prevented that.
At least another visit is on the agenda next time we're in London.
(Original)

(Translated) It is the oldest church in London, built in Norman style and founded in 1123 as an integral part of a larger building used as an Augustinian convent of which today it is the surviving part. The baptismal font dating back to 1405 is valuable and is one of the only two examples still existing in London dating back to the pre-reform period. Very interesting is the facing Gatehouse (the porter's lodge), a building that includes a 12th century arch (which is what remains of the southern door of the original nave of the church) surmounted by a precious example of a two-storey Tudor building from the 16th ( a two-story wooden framed house with a small attic built in 1595 by a local resident named William Scudamore) miraculously escaped the "Great Fire of London" of 1666.
(Original)

(Translated) The church from the outside makes a beautiful impression. He is one of the elders in London and, like many others, is the remnant of the abbey, in this case the Augustians. At the church you can relax in a small garden which is also a relic of the abbey. The surroundings are metropolitan, but some buildings have been added to the mood. Admission fee 5 GBP

(Translated) Essential!
The oldest church in the City in Norman style and a beautiful place to visit. It is worth reading a little earlier to learn about the history of the church and the surrounding hospital and enjoy not only the visual aspect (which is not minor) of the site.
For those who also like to visit movie locations, scenes from Four Weddings and a Funeral and Robin Hood (Kevin Costner version) were filmed here.

(Translated) Although it was restored in the 19th century, the foundation of this magnificent church dates from the 12th century. How did she escape the great fire of 1666? It is a very happy event that gives this neighborhood of Barbican a charm that cannot be ignored, between the great hospital and the Smithfield market.
