Reviews of St Bride's Church, Fleet Street
B. S.
Beautiful church with a great history. The Journalist's Church. The tiered wedding cake was inspired by the church spire. Go visit it, check out the crypt & the museum
T. Q.
I suppose this place might be eclipsed by it's larger neighbor church but it is still very charming. It's interesting to see the crypt and medieval church below. It also has it's famous spire that influenced wedding cakes.
K. P.
Lovely church just off Fleet Street by Ludgate Circus a tranquil haven in the busy City
I. S.
Went here by accident when there was Open House couple of weeks ago, beautiful church.
J. H.
Great little church. For the full experience, take in the tranquil surrounds of the churchyard with a takeaway curry from the neighbouring Indian curry house, Metropot. Just wonderful.
A. H.
Another little-known gem. Lovely church and lots of interesting material in rhe underground museum crypt.
E. M.
Beautiful church. We dropped in on a rainy afternoon and it had such a relaxing, peaceful atmosphere. I lit a candle for a friend who died the day before which made this special for me.
D. N. T.

It's beautiful little church with a museum in the crypt in the heart of London

THE CHURCH of St Bride's is justly world famous. To enter its doors is to step into 2,000 years of history, which had begun with the Romans some six centuries before the name of St Bride, daughter of an Irish prince, even emerged from legend to become associated forever with the site.
The story of St Bride's is inextricably woven into the history of the City of London. By the time the Great Fire of 1666 left the church in ruins, a succession of churches had existed on the site for about a millennium, and the area had already assumed its unique role in the emergence of English printing. It took nine years for St Bride's to re-appear from the ashes under the inspired direction of Christopher Wren, but for the next two-and-a-half centuries it was in the shadow of the church's unmistakeable wedding-cake spire that the rise of the British newspaper industry into the immensely-powerful Fourth Estate took place.
Then, in 1940, St Bride's fell victim once again to flames as German incendiary bombs reduced Wren's architectural jewel to a roofless shell. This time 17 years elapsed before rebuilding was completed, although a series of important excavations in 1953 amid the skeletal ruins, led by the medieval archaeologist Professor W. F. Grimes, came up with extraordinary results, uncovering the foundations of all six previous churches on the site.

Love the churches of old London City. This has ancient roman reamins in the crypt where you can visit.....quick 10 minutes museum.
D. M.
Destroyed by the Puritans and again by the German airforce, closed by the government in pandemic panic, St Bride's was open again for a beautiful carol service. Go down the little alley off Fleet Street, find this gem of a church, pause and pray
k. c.
great place to have Christmas carol singing together for free , chessboard floor is a signature ,comparatively newer than the ancient ones next to Victoria and Albert
j. b.
Grade I Listed and much rebuilt over 2000 years with the renowned surviving steeple attributed to Nicholas Hawksmoor and steeped in associations with the printing industry.. though in time, but a fleet-ing moment.
A museum, mosaics and sombre charnel remnants in the excavated crypt add a mindful and mournful note.
An active church with a spacious interior and a busy floor.
T. H.
A stunning church just of Fleet Street with a hidden gem of a museum in the crypt, well worth a visit
A. T.
A lovely, quiet church, tucked away in central London. Known as the Journalist's Church, it had many touching dedications to journalists who have died in service to their trade and practice.
B.
St. Bride's Church is Grade I listed building just off Fleet Street. It is one of Sir Christopher Wren's churches (1672) that has a particularly interesting history, it is also one of the more attractive small church visits that you can make in London.
The St. Bride's Church occupies the sight of more ancient church grounds, which date back to at least the sixth century. After the church was gutted during bombing raids in 1940, 6th century Saxon foundations as well as Roman era ruins were discovered during excavations at the church. These, amongst other interesting items and plaques dedicated to Journalists and Printers can be seen within the church crypt.
Another bit of interesting history is the connection the church has to modern day wedding cakes. If you look at the church steeple, you can note its similarity to traditional stacked wedding cakes and this is for good reason. It is believed that back in 1703, a pastry chef used the steeple as the inspiration for a large wedding cake for his bride-to-be. From this act sprung the wedding cake design, which we are today familiar with the world over. Not sure if the tale is true or not but looking at the steeple, you certainly can believe it so. For good views of the St. Bride's Church steeple, stop at Fleet Street and have a look before proceeding to the church. The views are quite good from here.
You can conveniently visit St. Bride's Church along with nearby St. Paul's Cathedral, Temple Church or other area attractions. It is worth your time and is free to visit.

It is a small and beautiful church located in the City. I didn't realise it was designed by Christopher Wren until I visited; you might be lucky enough (as I was) to enjoy one of the recitals.
S. V.
A stunning old church in the centre of London. Over 2000 years of history, redesigned by Christopher Wren after the Great Fire of London. Make sure you take the time to go downstairs where you can see history back to the Romans.
The many tiers of the spire are meant to have inspired the current wedding cake style.
A. E.
Interesting church with a crypt. Has a beautiful inside.

So much to learn about the history of London and the building itself, truly amazing.

Unassuming COE church hidden on Fleet Street, it’s known mainly as the church of the journalist and because it’s distinctive steeple was designed by Sir Christopher Wren. But not many people visit it or know how lovely it is. It sits on an ancient Roman site where Bridgid/ used to be adored. When Romans converted to Christianity, the church was erected to St. Bride. There’s a crypt under the church where you can see the original roman stones and site. They have wonderful organ recitals, it’s worth the visit.

As a Muslim I find it a bit strange writing a review about a Christian church. I’ve been to a wedding and a funeral at this church. It is an amazing place with so much history, culture tradition and an atmosphere that humbles you. A place of worship, but also a place you will surely find peace.
It’s not to far from my work so I might just stop by from time to time at lunch times. 🙂

Never been to St Brides or London, for that matter, but have seen the inside of the place on the Greg Lake video where he plays "I Believe In Father Christmas" along with Ian Anderson and the St Brides Church Choir. Absolutely beautiful space! The tremendous acoustics are evident on this video, as well. You can view this wonderful church on YouTube. Look for "I Believe In Father Christmas" Greg Lake - Ian Anderson.

(Translated) A small church I found by chance. On the ground, the music team was rehearsing.
The crypt (underground cathedral) is a museum where you can see the paving dates back to the Roman era and the basics of the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Period. It seems that the old history was unknown until it was destroyed and excavated in World War II.
Christopher Wren was rebuilt after it was burned down by the Great Fire of London. The cute tower is a modern wedding cake model.
Fleet Street seems to be a place of journalism and printing, and its relationship with them is explained. Go through the narrow passage and you will find a small modern prayer place. Engraved in blue light are the names of journalists who have probably died of truth. I regret that my English was inadequate and I could understand only a part of this wonderful church.

(Translated) The visit to the catacombs is very remarkable.
It is worth looking for and reading some of the history of the church to enjoy the visit more. And if you are lucky enough to coincide, try to listen to a choral concert inside: the sound is impressive.
They have church guides for sale and some interesting books on Wren and the like.
