Reviews of St Helen's Church, Bishopsgate
R. C.
I attended St Helens for the best part of a year after leaving Westminster Chapel due to their over charismatic services.
St Helens is a fantastic church that focuses on the most important thing - Christ our Lord. They are a church inspired by the Holy Spirit to preach on the bible and constantly reveal the mysteries within scripture each week.
There are three services, but it’s essentially two services with one repeated twice. The morning is a family service and both the afternoon and evening service are the same content to two audiences.
Throughout the week there are several bible studies, which focus on exploring the bible in great depth over the course of a year.
While no church is perfect in the sense that it will fulfil all individual requirements, this church is as close to biblical perfect as one could hope to achieve. Their focus is right, their heart is open, love is the fixation of the believers and all are truly welcome.
The only criticism, if I had to pick one, would be that everyone asks the same questions when they first meet you which feels prepared or taught. Every time I came I was required to tell people “what brings me to St Helens” and “what brings me to London”.
These are clearly evangelist questions, because there’s a lot of things about a person that you could ask without it being “why are you here right now”

A lovely church located not too far from several major tube and rail stations. I have been invited to a few well attended and engaging events but have not attended a regular service.
M. d. N.
Christ centred, Biblical teaching and a very welcoming team to make anyone from all backgrounds and life stages. The building itself is pretty to look at as well 😋
O. J.
Solid evangelical church where the bible is clearly preached and taught each week. As it is a large church, our weekly bible study has been a great place to get to know other people within the church family.
A. S.
Excellent church in the heart of city of London. Solid bible teaching, very good place to learn about Christianity. Sunday services at 10am, 4pm , and 6pm. The 10am and 4pm have Sunday school for children. Parking can be problematic. Beautiful building.
m. l.
Incredible church: bible centred, Jesus focused, God honouring, spirit led, disciple making, gospel teaching, training, and sending church!
C. W. D.
A very fine church and congregation, and quite welcoming to the visitor from abroad. As is written above the portal, “This is none other but the howse of God, & this is the gate of heaven.”
M. T.
Fantastic! The lights are pretty warm, and they want to keep you in:) I liked it
u. u.
Simply the most outstanding church in London, a city with many outstanding churches. For generations, a center for faithful Bible teaching and warm loving Christian fellowship.
D. A.
This magnificent building is poorly served by the congregation who happen to be using it. The biblebashers here insist that disguise the building, its fine monuments and architecture, behind a series of hideous vanity screens. Even worse served is near by St. Andrew Undershaft, aslo controlled by the Happy Clappies of St. Helen's. One gets the feeling that they would tear the buildings down if they could and build a glass and steel shed, more suited to their austere, narrow view of religion.
D. O.
I was here for 6 years. Great biblical focus. They will set you up for a life of following Jesus.
My wife and I got married here too, great place!
J.
The most friendly, welcoming, church, sound in doctrine. Delightful.
L. B.
A lovely old church nestled amongst the tall, modern buildings of the City. Excellent teaching in the sermons on Sundays, mid-week Bible studies in small groups, and a very friendly and welcoming community. They also offer lunchtime talks during the week, and Christianity Explored courses, open to all.
b. b.
Planned visit to join in the Tuesday lunchtime service. Covid rules apply so pre booked admission was required. Clear and friendly instructions as per seating arrangements. A thoughtful and clear sharing of the need for the Word of God in today's challenging situation was helpful. Online service is also available so as to follow up I the teaching series.
P. C.
Great place to improve your bible ninja skills, make friends and participate in Christian community.
E. A.
Very big and beautiful Church, nice atmosphere
M. H.
Fantastic Church & welcoming Church Family. The lunchtime sermons are very helpful during the working week

I’ve been a student at this church for 3 years and have found it a really incredible place to be.
Through the dedication of the leadership and the clear and simple teaching from the Bible, I have learnt more about who God is, have come to understand more of his love for me, and as a result, I am better equipped to follow him.
I was welcomed really well, encouraged to ask questions and have learnt valuable skills that I use in my everyday life.
If you’re a student coming to London, Christian or not, this would be a brilliant place to get stuck in!

A great Church of England church in the City of London Borough. It is great because they aim with every fibre of their being to teach the Bible faithfully, consistently, and unapologetically. They also channel a lot of resources towards training every member to handle the Bible for themselves. Four stars because of my concerns for the pragmatic trappings of Anglicanism.
L. O. D.
Came for a lunchtime talk. Very warm welcome, clear teaching of biblical truth, everyone I spoke to was friendly regardless of background, and the setting itself is beautiful. Will be returning for a Sunday evening service. Nice and close to Liv St station too
M. A.
A solid church and bible teaching.Very big, so it can take a little time to make it feel like home. Would highly recommend, if you are trying to understand the bible as a whole book. You can ask the difficult questions, which is the most important part for me. Online resource - audio recordings are outstanding. Free download! You can search by topic or bible book verse.
E. R.
A fantastic church that was crowded with people, and the sermon was current, topical, clear and informative. Entertaining as well. They also have a band that performs while hymns are sung. I am not sure if I am using the right terms here, but I must say that it's one of the best churches in the city and is definitely worth a visit.

Excellent bible studies at St Helens Bishopsgate, I would recommend St Helens to anyone who would like to learn to read the Bible properly, looking at the context, background, authors purpose and also relating it to current users; as the bible tells us about God majestic and comprehensive plan to save us. To find out for yourself, visit St Helens Bishopsgate.

A church located just right beside the Girkin. A place where the truth of God is preached. This is Christ centred and Word centred church. Christ has died for our sins and bring his people back to God and whoever believes in Him will be saved.
S. P.
13th Century gem of a church surrounded by 21st century skyscrapers known as the Gherkin, Cheese Grater and the latest No 22 Bishopsgate (nickname?). Badly damaged in 1992 and 1993 by terrorist bombs. Now beautifully restored. I used to work around here in the last century. The surroundings have changed totally but the church looks the same. I like to attend the Thursday 35 minute lunchtime service consisting of a Bible reading, a talk, Q&A and prayers. Sandwiches, fruit and coffee are available for £5. I did check and it's OK to munch away during the service!
J. L.
St Helen's is a beacon of Bible based Christian teaching in the City of London. If you want to understand what the Bible is really saying. I would strongly advise going along to one of their services.
P. S.
St Helens is a great church, this I what you will get:
A church that is centred around the bible alone, nothing more nothing less.
Good gospel centred balanced preaching between Gods righteous judgement and his never ending love.
Uncompromised preaching regardless of society's ever changing standard of morality.
Warm friendly large congregation of real Christian that really love God and honest and authentic.
Reverent Christ centred worship
Here is what you wont get.
Fuzzy, candy floss, bubblegum, watered down, compromised preaching to gets bums on seats.
Seeker sensitive preaching ensuring no one is offended by the gospel.
Weird manifestations not found in the bible.
So that should give you a god idea ;) God bless
J. L.
I love their bible study groups. Especially try to attend weekday's study group. Best one is tuesday 1.10 pm lunch time.
J. O.
St Helen's Church is really close to Liverpool Street station and it is quite small. It has wooden pews and chandeliers. It is open for services during the week and also for public visitations. I like this church because when I went there I was using an audio guide, and this was playing a choral piece that took place at this church.
U. E.
A beautiful church in the middle of the busy city, modestly sitting besides the giant Gherkin building. The church entrance states "Heaven and earth will pass away. But my words will never pass away" from Matthew 24:35.
L. S.
Great Sunday morning service. Mixture of older hymns and more modern songs. Good sermon. Recommended.
M. R.
I have just heard on the radio that Historians believe that the one and only William Shakespeare lived very nearby. They also believe that he may have wrote A Midsummers Night Dream at this house.
Historians have found tax records that include Shakespeare’s name living nearby.
Expect a blue plaque soon!
A. B.
a lovely peaceful church in the middle of a busy city
S. T.
Attended Sunday service, very welcoming congregation.
C. R.
William Shakespeare lived at 35 Great St Helen's 1597 to 1598 overlooking this church whilst he was writing Romeo and Juliet.
J. M.
Sound Biblical doctrine being preached in London. Probably the best teaching in the UK. If Carlsberg made churches, ......
D. W.
Great church and community.. No sensationalism or added fluff but great focus on God's word.
B. S.
I started work on the 17th April 1950 at 35 Great St. Helens, Bishopsgate London EC3 at the Cambrian Insurance Co. Telephone No. Avenue 5418 -Ave 5419. My first experience of St Helens Church was watching Douglas Bader (TinLegs) roar in, in his Morgan sports car come to a quick stop. Climb out and waddle off towards the old Shellmex House I think it was. My second experience was going into the church one lunch time and looking at some of the artifacts and what intrigued me the most and I've never forgotten (as you can see it's more than 60 years ago) was a set of force teeth worn by a nun in the 15th 16th century, I'm not sure now which century it was ut it was one of those two.
I went back to Gt St. Helens in 2005 and it seems that No 35 where I first went to work had been blown up some years early by terrorists, how true this is I don't know, somebodt may have been pulling my leg.
L. F. S.
A great place to go for faithful Bible teaching - ideal for people looking in on the Christian faith and for those who want to grow as disciples of Jesus.

(Translated) Small church located in a very pretty square that contrasts with quite modern buildings. We went to see her and since there was still no cult, they treated us very well by telling us a little about their church and their customs. Inside it is very beautiful and the atmosphere was very familiar, it is seen that they would have some event in a few moments ...... Of course, they invited us to stay, but we were on a tour and we didn't stop anymore. I recommend going to see her if she catches your way on your trip to London, because the enclave that she has is striking.
