Reviews of The Monastery Manchester
B. S.
We went for After noon tea with the Jersey Boys tribute act. They were fabulous, had everyone singing and dancing. Food OK, slow brining out the food, tea was warm not hot. Coffee was hot and a good taste. Cakes were really nice super soft sponge and tasty. The Monetary is great, beautiful and really interesting. We'll worth a visit, they have regular Afternoon teas with lots of other artists and also Candlelight evenings.

Not only a stunning venue (obviously) but versatile too asking with some really lovely helpful staff makes this one of the most desirable wedding venues in the North West not just Manchester.
G. W.
Went for a visit on Friday night at short notice to the Queen by Candlelight, the venue was stunning inside, obviously alot of work has been completed, the Healing Garden look lovely at night with lights around the trees, the lady at reception on arriving was fantastic, helped us out with advice where to go for a meal and which busses to catch into Manchester Centre,

"Pugins Masterpiece!".... Having gained inclusion on the World Heritage Site list. This amazing example of Gothic architecture(The Houses of Parliament being designed by Pugins father), this Franciscan Monastery, where I attended the youth club as a teenager, is once again serving at the heart of this community. Father Gerrard would stop in the street and chat, everyone in West Gorton knew him. Mrs Cope my mate Jimmy's mum, who lived across our Close, would scrub the floors at the Monastery In the late 70's/early 80's, she was a devout lady and was dedicated to her task, despite the weather, that included early mornings in the winter cold.
The outstanding edifice dominating the landscape, is for me Notre Dame, Canterbury Cathedral, York Minster!, but the heady thing is it's on my doorstep, and I was always able to go in there, as a teenager, I could have, but it was a place of worship for the community, but I didn't either attend that school, or believe particularly in God, which I do now, in the form of Jesus Christ. Enough said go and have a look yourself. Check the website for the future diversity of events, befitting this unique venue, rescued from dereliction and now going from strength to strength. Be assured you won't be disappointed.

Astonishing restoration on one of Manchester's most iconic buildings. Such a beautiful space. A must visit.

Really wasn't expecting to find this little gem hiding in Gorton Manchester. Slightly disappointed to find that it wasn't a working church and that that the friars had left some years ago. Great to see this building has been preserved and restored. Built and designed by Pugin, this is an impressive building which was built not along the standard lines for churches but to maximise the light that will fall on the saints as the sun shines through. The main naive is majestic creating a sense of awe and wonder. The healing garden is an oasis of peace and there is a delightful little coffee shop. If you are in the area well worth a visit.
C. G.

Fantastic venue for all occasions. If you went there as a child as I did to the school and church (St Francis) it holds great memories and at the same time upsetting that theirs so many broken and missing parts to the original church. Great for the whole family. Parking & toilets great.
W. W.
We paid a lot of money for this venue everything went well good buffet. Downside drinks expensive, all so clearing away the food that you have paid for. Also bar staff had to speeds slow and stop. Come on £2-50 a glass coke £5-00 pint

Not what was expected, we were sat in the main room near the reception, not really where we expected to sit. Not much atmosphere. The tea it self was OK but we were not asked what kind of sandwiches we liked, no choice. Wasn't told it was the festive menu untill after we had booked and paid. Only gave it three stars.
A. H.
Great place to pray and authentic landmark of Manchester
S. O.
Well worth a visit. Takes about 1 hour to see what's on show. Next time I would try a guided tour if they do them but can't find anything in their website apart from in the menu and the link doesn't work.

Our first visit to this beautiful Manchester heritage building. There are two cafes. The Victorian Pantry is well worth a visit, it would be wise to book a table. Afternoon tea is £15.95 per person. We attended a book fair and there was plenty to see and do. There is an artisan market on May 19th. Wellbeing Open day on Sunday June 9th this is to do with the PDSA centre that's coming to Gorton. There is ample parking.
C. M.
Wonderful building. Inside is serene and breathtaking. The staff are friendly and most helpful. I visit regularly and am in awe of it each time. Thanks Gorton Monastery.

We were married here in 2012. The main reception has completely changed since then but the main structure of the building hasn't changed. Plenty of parking too and easy to find due to the tall spire.
T. L.
Very impressed place for conference or special events. Staff on highest level of service, tasty food.
M. S.
Attended a wedding there recently and what a fabulous place it is. Loads of character. Secure parking at the venue which was free. Could have done with a couple more bar staff to reduce queuing.
It was winter, and a few of the older guests found it a little cold and spent some of the evening hugging radiators.
Overall, a great venue.
A. A.

The Church and Friary of St Francis, known locally as Gorton Monastery, is a 19th-century former Franciscan friary in Gorton, Manchester, England. The Franciscans arrived in Gorton in December 1861 and built their friary between 1863 and 1867. Most of the building work was done by the friars themselves, with a brother acting as clerk of works. The foundation stone for the church was laid in 1866 and completed in 1872; it closed for worship in 1989. It is a prominent example of High Victorian Gothic architecture, and has been listed with Grade II* status since 1963. It was designed by Edward Welby Pugin (1834–1875), whose father, A.W.N. Pugin, promoted the revival of Gothic as the style of architecture which was the ideal expression of Catholic faith and worship in church buildings.
In 1997, Gorton Monastery was placed on the World Monuments Fund Watch List of 100 Most Endangered Sites in the World alongside Pompeii, the Taj Mahal and the Valley of the Kings.
The church and associated friary buildings underwent a £6 million restoration programme supported by funds from the Heritage Lottery Fund, English Heritage and European Regional Development Fund. The project was completed in June 2007 when the restored buildings opened as a venue for conferences, business meetings and community events. The building is also used for a range of concerts.[citation needed]
Construction of a new "Welcome Wing" with facilities for education and the community, along with further restoration on the altars, decorations, and floor tiles, started in February 2016, following from a £1 million donation from Norman Stoller in September 2014, and £2 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund in December 2014. The wing, designed by Eco Arc, was built by HH Smith & Sons Ltd on the footprint of a building that was demolished in the 1960s

L. S.
Fabulous place staff and orchestra with of course brilliant conductor. Lovely mulled wine!

Beautiful energies. Their monthly health and well being day on the first Sunday each month is a must. It provides opportunity to try a whole range of Spiritual and Healing disciplines for the very reasonable entry fee of £5. The cafe has lovely home made cakes and light meals to choose from but get in early as there is not a massive range and it's very popular with visitors.
A. S.
