Reviews of St Mary the Virgin Church, Happisburgh

Whilst having a brief stay in North Norfolk, we took advantage of the Open Tower day at St Mary the Virgin, Happisburgh. Kind volunteers and steep and very tight helical staircase led to beautiful views over the fast eroding landscape. I recommend a visit before the sea reclaims the land. Higher than the nearby lighthouse, a lovely way to see Norfolk.

A beautiful Norfolk church that is quiet and also full of light. The church tower is open on some days. There are 133 steps and the views of the coast and countryside are spectacular from the top of the tower.

Stopped for lunch while cycling the area, fabulous church in a elevated position with views of the North Sea; benches placed around the exterior of the church to relax on and enjoy your lunch.

Beautiful church with beautiful surroundings. A very enjoyable visit. Brilliant idea having a contactless machine so that we can easily donate.

Beautiful church, stunning location. Really really interesting history and some intriguing graves, including some from some famous shipwrecks.
Walk into the graveyard and you'll find one of the best sea views I've ever experienced.... truly magical place, i love it! But please don't come here as we like the peace and quiet! 😋

This building is beautiful! It sits, elevated, with views over the sea and along the coast. It has open days where you can climb the tower, which seems to run inline with the opening of the lighthouse. Inside, the church is full of local artefacts and really beautiful pieces. if you are lucky enough to meet one of the wardens there, they will give you the most amazing history of the church. The vicar is also lovely and very community minded.
If you have your camera with you, I recommend that you walk a little along the road that runs alongside the church until you come you a footpath to the left, this will bring you to the bottom edge of the graveyard with an amazing view of the tower. Alternatively, a small walk along the cliffs will give you a wonderful view which has great light on a clear afternoon.

A truly excellent church - big, well maintained and in a fantastic location. Very glad its not been swept away yet (as has been foretold!). Well worth a visit- and then to the pub around the back gate corner : )

On certain days the tower is open to climb onto the rooftop. Fantastic views and knowledgeable assistant. Only for people over a certain height (health and safety!)

Enjoyed a lovely church family service here on 6th August. We were made very welcome. Also enjoyed some ringing on the bells before too.

We went because the tower was open, was a bit tight going up and down but worth the view once you got to the top
