Reviews of Christ Church Cathedral
M. A.
Beautiful location. Audio tour is a must, much information told which i never knew. We went at the end of november and there was construction almost everywhere we looked, so 75% of the time we had an awe inspiring view. Signage for tour were obscure at some places, causing you to miss whole sections. Guides were available but not at the confusing areas. We went when a ceremony was happening as well and it was pretty neat to see the graduates in their full ceremonial dress.
S. P.
Amazing architecture, and the services were amazing. I learned a few things about the way the Catholic Church operates and some of their traditional prayer and rituals which differ from the way we do things in the United States.
V. M. M.
Great walking tour of the history of a living campus. The grounds are also stunning. Best book ahead online so not to disappoint. A bit pricey for the average Brit...
N. F.
Like all of Oxford this is a beautiful cathedral and college, but the admission fee is not worth it any longer.
There’s plenty other colleges with fees under £5 that actually let you walk around and explore!
As a tourist, unless you really wanna see the Harry Potter staircase, it’s not worth it.
T. N.
We were fortunate enough to be here for our daughter's wedding. What an amazing place to have a special service! Felt very blessed.
C. H.
Beautiful cathedral. Lovely place to go for private prayer and reflection
C. N.
Absolutely gorgeous church. I went for a small service in a side Chapel and we were very rudely interrupted in the middle of the service by a tour guide. He was talking very loudly and we could not hear our vicar. We had to ask him three times to be mindful of the service and at the end he didn't wait for us to leave before bringing his tour group into the Chapel and showing them around.
J. D.
Wonderful building, great part of Oxford University, well worth it with comprehensive documentary, £15.50 ea. 👍
T. G.
The Cathedral is the College Chapel as well as the cathedral church for the Diocese of Oxford. The beautiful building is home to a vibrant worshipping community and hosts a wide range of events, music, art and drama.
Worship continues in the Cathedral in spite of the pandemic. You can find all the details of our daily round of worship here.
A. P.
It is definitely worth getting a tour of this place. The little device they give you is interactive and you can get minute-long audio and video explanations of the different parts. Harry Potter fans will easily recognize some of the places and I even saw some children dressed up. The cathedral is absolutely beautiful and full of history. I was lucky enough to witness a piano recital and the music filling up the cathedral was an event in itself.
D. L.
Such a lovely place, it’s free to visit and you get a little book when you enter to tell you all about the Abbey and it’s history. The stain glass windows are amazing and it’s history is very interesting, The sense of calm and peace within the Abbey and grounds is beautiful and it’s just a short walk from the River and park. A must visit if your in the area.
A. A.
The cathedral has a very medieval yet modern feel in it. It reminds of Harry Potter movies, the quidditch games and the clock tower gives an awe inspiring experience. I really enjoyed the food served in the college inside. It's one of the biggest ones around Oxford. The inner fresco of pictures inside the building in the dining hall is fabulous
P. C.
The college is really pretty and I really enjoyed to take a look at the great hall and knowing that students and teachers still have their meals in this rooms these days. I just think it's a bit pricey for the things that you can actually see. probably they overcharged you because Harry Potter was filmed here. 15 pounds for a 45min visit is a bit too much taking into consideration other great buildings that you can see for free or for a smaller amount. but if you're a Harry Potter fan you won't miss it for sure (and they know that 😜). Regardless, the building is truly remarkable even from the outside, and you can get some great pics from the huge park surrounding the building :)
S. C.
I love the architecture inside and I'm a fan of Harry Potter so I visited this place to see the location in Harry Potter film but I could see only the staircase. But overall was so beautiful. You may need to check from the ticket selling counter first to make sure you can see the part you want. If they have an event, they may close some parts you wanna see. Entrance free is about £6-7 for an adult.
J. V.
Great audio tour.
I. S.
Lovely grounds, quite a walk. Mind you, they close the doora at 4 pm during the summer so I did not see much. Make sure to get there early if you want to see everything.
B. M.
Outstanding!!! It really deserves the waiting time to get the tickets. More than the history that envolves Oxford atmosphere I loved all the pieces, the windows, the altarpieces, the chorus...
A. A.
The place where Harry Potter took place.
One part of the Oxford.
Only parts of the place available to visitors while some parts currently under construction or maintenance.
Better be careful when exam or mass taking place. Keep your volume down and enjoy your trip.
Souvenirs shop available at the end of the route viewing the place. Please make sure you follow the route strictly to prevent accident.
Admission fee £20/£8/£7 depends on your identity. Show student card for student discount.
D. H.
If you're in Oxford, Christchurch College and its cathedral is certainly worth the visit. The audio tour is decent but certainly not required. A couple locations were also used in the Harry Potter movies.
D. S.
It is beautiful, historic, holy. They have done a great job managing through the COVID pandemic.
A. C.
If you are in Oxford, you have to visit Crist Church! For more than 1hour you'll be back in history. Just fantastic!!
J. B.
Beautiful cathedral, very atmospheric. Well worth a visit.
P. D.
Marvellous for Harry Potter fans!
➕ Its beautiful cloisters were transformed into Hogwarts hallways in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.
➕ The dining hall provided the main inspiration for Hogwarts’ own Great Hall.
➕ Staircase in harry potter
E. B.
£6.5 to get in ( church is not available at the moment, picture gallery £4 ) good to have a look if you are around and have time, as the famous Harry Potter dining room is here and it’s quite impressive.
M. B.
Simply stunning. Had a good wander around not just the Cathedral but also the college. Beautiful surroundings and well worth a look.
D. R.
Amazing place! It was an overwhelming visit.
The architecture is really impressive, the outdoors are very tidy. I had a good time and the fact that I later found out about Harry Potter, is even better :)
B. S.
Wow this place is beautiful, relaxing and the views are outstanding. The architectural design is phenomenal. I love it period.
K. K.
Beautiful building and cathedral to tour. Not very large and there is not a lot of information or signs available to learn about the building. Cost £9/adult unless you work/go to Oxford University (employees get themselves and two in for free). If you arrive after they close, you can walk around the grounds which is still very beautiful.
E. E.
Wow! Beautiful cathedral dripping in History, would highly reccomend visiting, the audio tours are worth considering also, very insightful.
D. M.
The surroundings, Choir and cathedral were outstanding. My whole experience.was marred by the bullying manner of one of the staff because I took a photo OUTSIDE
J. T.
We didn't go inside. You can see the facade and area around for free. It's beautiful and a good photo opportunity if you are around Oxford.
L. L.
Beautiful cathedral with lots of details. The stained glass windows were beautiful. Need to pay a fee to get inside, where u can visit the cathedral, college, cloisters and the hall.
F. P.
Really nice architecture, well it's famous for the movie of Harry Potter, it's a magic place, And the conservation of the place it's amazing,
C. T.
Magnificent historic architecture full of wonders, very good multimedia guide, great place to pray/contemplate!!!
C. M.
Already been there twice. Family ticket package available. Love the cathedral and its ceilings. And of course the grand dining hall, with tables set, lamps lit, sending you right into Harry Potter scenes.
R. F. S.
Fantastic place where you can enjoy in Oxford. The hall decorations inspired Harry Potter movies. Is the best place you can visit in the city because the rest of universities are worthless. I do really recommend to visit this place in the morning otherwise it gets really crowded.
A. C.
Part of the tour to Christ Church college in Oxford. Unique stained glass and a storied history. The place of congregation for many renowned thinkers at Oxford.
S. C.
Pictures say a thousand words! The architecture is just plain awesome! And spike up your imagination like you are one of the hogwarts!
T. R.
Outstanding Cathedral. Beautiful architecture. Absolute 'must see' in Oxford.
Speak to the staff in the Cathedral for stories of its history...
L. P.
Let me say this, if you will miss this beautiful Church - you will miss Oxford. Absolutly gorgeos church with stunning view from the tower!
R. K.
Amazing old cathedral, a lot of history and architecture
K. C.
It's beautiful n stunning. I shall come to visit it again !
T. M.
Amazing place to visit when in Oxford. Usually not extremely busy. Be carefulll and pay attention to detail. Please respect the residents!
T. O.
This was expensive but a very interesting place to see
A.
Well looked after. Friendly staff. Visitor guide and access seems a bit steep. The locked down smart phone type device for the tour was interesting and you could go at your own pace with good range of languages. Beautiful cathedral :-) Great pity about the price though.
C. W.
Brief visit to sign book of condolence, looked beautiful
D. C.
Beautiful historic building. Usually very busy with tourists lining up to go inside.
T. M.
Amazingly beautiful church. We attended 6 pm Evensong and loved it!
Е. Б.
Great mixed gothic, the ceiling is amazing and you can come to the Mess and enjoy the service and chirch for free.
G. F.
My Wife and I had a fantastic time at Christ Church Cathedral and College.
D. I.
Beautiful. Historical. A must visit.
I. H.
This is a beautiful cathedral and college.
There are a history of Alice in wonderland, because the man who wrote the story he was a maths teacher here.
So many historical story connection with the royal family to.
Audio tour guide is available several languages and that is really informative and interesting.
The dining room was used for Harry Potter films.
D. B.
I don't think you can visit this Cathedral without paying for the audio tour of Christ Church college. This is a good tour although possibly truncated through Covid.
The Cathedral is very interesting and supported well by the audio tour. Feels very intimate. Possibly not as impressive as Canterbury or York but still worth a visit.
L. A. S.
Fabulous experience, so much history. Highly recommended.
O. R.
Expensive to enter the college to view the cathedral if you're not a member of the university, but other than that, it is a very nice cathedral. I particularly like the stained glass windows and the fact that many things on display in the chapel are very old and yet quite well preserved.
P. C.
Take a special look at the Burne Jones window in the St Frideswide chapel. Charming and deeply moving at the same time.
J. W.
Amazing place to experience medieval Anglican faith.
J. (.
Amazing cathedral in an Oxford college which is otherwise closed to the public currently. Just ask and the porter/ custodians will let you in past the tourists
You may well find that the officiating clergyman happens to be a Regius Professor of Divinity with an international reputation
They have just settled a bizarre, unChristian and enormously expensive war against their own Dean. Probably more Christian to settle it with the spin of a coin than to spend the charity fund money on poor lawyers.
Perhaps better to remove the see back to Dorchester where English Christianity started, and leave the academics to their woke college politics?
j. m.
Evensong was a deeply spiritual event in this atmospheric building. You can feel the history seeping through the walls as you sit and pray by candlelight. Beautiful singing in an awe inspiring setting.
A. 2.
Too expensive to enter 8£/person just to see the cathedral and the dining room ...
M. P.
Very busy with folk who appear to be more interested in Harry potter
S. W.
Good all round experience. Audio tour interesting and informative broken up into differening sections, history, items of importance and what its like for contemporaries. Enjoyed by a 12 year old at his own pace.
M. R.
Nice place to visit but busy.
S. J.
A must visit place if you come to Oxford, it's incredibly beautiful both external and interia design with rich history behide. If you purchase the entry ticket, you can get free audio guide to listen during your visit. You can learn so much of this place that you will not miss any important spot. Spare about 1.30 hours for a visit or at least 1 hour minimum. Do visit the shop before you leave. And if you're a Harry Potter fan, look up pics on google to follow their trails. Have fun!
J. S.
Wow!
K. B.
All the atmosphere of Oxford' churches is here. By far, the best in this "category"
H. S.
Beautiful cathedral steeped in history, with an amazing ceiling and colourful stained glass windows. We were lucky enough to be entertained by phenomenal organ playing
N. M.
The most beautiful Cathedral in Oxford with an amazing view. Must visit!
N. S.
An amazing place to visit, re-visit, and always remember
M. D.
Unfortunately, owing to the Church of England's political response to 'covid', we were unable to visit the chapel of Christ Church Oxford (despite the fact that we were visiting the Dean). The chapel is unique in that it is also the cathedral of the Bishop of Oxford. It also features a n unusual 'pendant' fan-vault; similar to that in the Henry VII chapel of Westminster Abbey. Whilst it is one of England's smallest cathedrals, it's also one of the most historic: and its proximity to the College's art gallery, makes it doubly worth a visit.
B. H.
I come here regularly for Sunday eucharist. The church feels inclusive and the sermon is always well managed. Don't miss out on their majestic choral evensongs 🎶
A. H.
Neat self guided tour, though a little pricey for the overall length. Can easily be completed in under and hour.
H. C.
It's probably the most famous college in Oxford. Amazing ! I like the dinning room ( Harry Potter' sense)
M. W.
The interior of the church looks very nice.
M. N.
The ticket it's a little bit expensive and there are a lot of zones there are closes to the visitors.
B. T.
Recommend here, entry fee is not too high. Nice one!
E. V.
This cathedral is very nice and artistic. It's good for students and also for a day of visiting. Me being a Harry Potter fan I definitely liked it. It has a very good guide to listen to, very detailed and very interesting. I recommend this to people who want a bit of history of the place.
A. A.
Beautiful venue and great backdrop for the Oxford Remembrance Sunday Service at Christ Church cathedral - really beautifully worked ceilings and arches.
A. S.
Great day out, not to be missed when in Oxford.
a. d.
My favourite is to attend the evensong service in this majestic place
F. G.
Very beautiful!! Every Harry Potter fan must see!
L. L.
Full of the peaceful presence of God. An ancient and beautiful place of worship. The Laurelin Singers created ethereal worship to reflect the mood of the medieval and renaissance periods
A. M.
Beautiful place. Must visit
L. T.
Full of interest if you know what to look for. Helpful staffand guide booklets free in 5 languages.
W. B.
Super little cathedral. I love the stained glass windows created by Edward Burne-Jones. You'll have to pay to see it, and the rest of the college, but you get a great audio guide.
T. Q. T.
Wonder Church ❤
J. F.
Gorgeous and Evensong services were lovely
B. K. (.
Amazing place, very beautiful out and inside same. Need buy online the ticket , but possible in the souvenir shop, garden part. Make in here the Harry Potter some parts.
J. D.
The views of all the history are the highlight of this building and grounds as well as the self guided tour tablets. Everything is very picturesque. It's also a must see for Harry Potter fans.
L. S.
What a wonder to look at and wonder around. We were lucky that on the day we arrived it was a free open day. It was great to see the great hall and all the portraits and stained glass windows around the place. The centre court yard was also a great delight to see. Such an epic place thats been around for a long time. Worth the visit......
J. C.
It’s so nice place~!!!
M. S. A. K.
A must visit place if you happen to be in Oxford
Y. T.
Amazing and beautiful historical architecture! Worth coming!
S. C.
Well worth the visit
J. R.
Amazing building. Wandered around quite happily for a good few hours. Jealous of the students who are in the privileged position of studying and living here! And to have your meals in that dining room, awesome!! Definitely go here.
I. C.
One of the must-visit places in Oxford! I was here in June 2019, during summer. The cathedral among blossoming flowers look really beautiful. Unfortunately I didn't have that much time in Oxford. I would love to do more exploring. I hope to get another chance in the future.
C. L.
Really nice inside but the queue is quite long. Price is just affordable. In the Great Hall of the Harry Potter's movie, a queue is formed, which you need to follow - not the greatest experience of the Great hall
S. M.
Fantastic place, rich in gorgeous history and architecture.
T. B.
Worth a visit, right from the gorgeous cottage and gardens at the front, to the majestic entrance, grand hall, quadrangle and Cathedral itself. Good value listening self guided tour with headphones and mini iPad. Loved it!
F.
Beautiful! Loved the audio tour
S. L.
History, beauty, peacefulness
V. W.
Lovely cathedral when we visited there was a guest choir on for an hour which was brilliant. Very well kept, has a lovely atmosphere and good examples of all the usual church architecture windows etc. Shop selling the usual items.
D. B.
Had a tour around today - what an amazing College - students graduating, Harry Potter hall. Brilliant place for young adults on their educational journey! Lovely gardens as well!
G. S.
Spent a week as a student in the Oxford Experience. You live and learn like a student. We saw all the buildings, libraries, gardens. This is a fantastic place with great buildings and structures.
The main entrance great stone carvings are wonderful. The most famous sites are the dining hall, library (which only students can enter), cathedral, gift shop, quads. The dorms (students only) are interesting as they have been updated, but still a lot of old features. There are building a new visitors center which should make the whole experience more enjoyable.
b. J.
Beautiful church windows. A very welcoming atmosphere. We were very lucky to be there for the benediction and Our Father. The gift shop is amazing.
Thank you for such a moving experience.
L. E.
The garden is very nice and great for wildlife. The house is beautiful with an old historical feeling about it. Overall it is a great place to go if you are visiting Oxford and it is FREE! It's a beautiful place to go to in a sunny day.
K. Y.
Amazing place with incredible history. Filled with groups of tourists who seem to have no knowledge or respect for what they are seeing. Came back for the Choral Evensong, which was special and unique to be a part of, and encouraging to witness people of faith and kindness still exist across the globe in a very dark world.
Д. А.
Interesting place with beautiful architecture design
S. G.
Stunning Burne-Jones stained glass windows. A really lovely guide gave me a personal tour of them.
N. F.
Colassal place filled with so many things to do and learn. Beautiful architecture and greenery makes for great pictures. There's truly nothing like it. Would definitely visit again.
D. B.
A great bit of history, and spectacular architecture. Harry Potter fans will recognize many of the filming locations.
A. G. (.
This is my mother church, so it's like home to me, but if you're visiting, there is lots of architectural details to see and you can catch organ recitals, or are always welcome to join a service - there are several a day.
M. W.
A fantastic, historical place. Highly recommended 👌 👍
A. P.
When you visit Christ Church College take your time and go on the guided tour of the cathedral. Times are displayed on the board at the entrance. You'll be surprised, as I was, to find there's so much more about the church than what meets your eye. The very competent and entertaining guide will make the visit a memorable one.
P. C.
I am catholic and I attend Sunday's mass at christ church cathedral in Oxford. The service is great, the choire guys are amazing and the architecture is marvelous. It's wonderful
C. G.
lovely place and a must for Harry Potter fans
G. V. G.
Some things to see for Harry Potter fans. Quite expensive though.
I. L.
Excellent audio video guiding tour with lots of interesting info.
D. P. E.
What a remarkable setting this historic church occupies! I was fortunate enough to attend an academic convention and dine in the Great Hall. Erasmus and Sir Thomas More and countless other 'greats' had eaten there in previous centuries
z. M.
Stunning place definitely worth a visit!! Staff welcoming and friendly. Mostly free to visit there is a fee for the picture hall. The stained gkass windows are breathtaking!
O. E. T.
It's a beautiful place, I enjoyed the visit thoroughly. I know quite a lot about British history but the interactive tour gave me a lot of interesting information.
V. G.
Beautiful place but very expensive
R. P.
Real good tour and lovely staff. Nice to be able to tour at your own pace
A. V.
Although the present building dates from the 12th century, Christ Church acquired cathedral status in 1546. The most striking feature in the interior is the double arcading of the nave, creating an impression of much greater height. In the 14th century, the church was extended to the north, and the choir was created in 1500 with fan vaulting overhanging keystones.
In the south transept is the Thomas Becket window (1320) and five glass windows designed by Edward Burne-Jones and made by William Morris in 1871.
Y. A.
The most iconic place in oxford.
T. C.
It was OK, but nothing much to do actually.
B. R.
Did the Tour of the College & it's Cathedral. Beautiful & interesting! Lewis Carroll was a Professor here & wrote Alice in Wonderland books whilst here. Parts of the Harry Potter films were filmed here too!
W.
Iconic place in Oxford. Really a must see. It is a huge landmark that you couldnt miss when you arrived to Oxford. Both outter and inner sides of the building look mavellous. Though you have to pay a small fee to get inside, I am lucky enough to have a college student to vouch for me so I could enter for free. Definitely will visit again if I were to have another shot to visit Oxford.
M. G.
Beautiful cathedral rich in history. Built 800 years ago, and hosted the ordination of both John and Charles Wesley. The Easter services were excellent.
V. B.
A must do while visiting Oxford. Was very nice inside, last admission at 4.15pm, we arrived at 4.10pm by luck and got to see everything right in time. Definitely recommend !
M. A.
Peaceful. In a beautiful setting.
B. K.
Awesome place to visit
B. A. M.
No words can describe the beauty of this church... I've travelled around the world. I'm catholic. I've visited the most important churches in the main cities of the world, but any like this!!
A. P.
A very nice place to visit. I know they give you audioguides when you buy your ticket, but if you can find a real guide, it's even better.
D. M.
Excellent audio guided tour.
Absolutely loved it, really is a must if you come to Oxford and want to understand why it is there at all.

B. E.
A beautiful small cathedral within the confines of Christchurch College. If you are attending a service you can enter by the main gates on St. Aldates. Chapel of St Grids is lovely, especially the Pre Raphelite stained glad window. Toilet facilities and a shop but no cafe. Wheelchair accessible.
V. S.
It’s an amazing place to visit. It’s beautiful and very well maintained but when I visited was super crowded and some of the points of interest were closed too.
S. B.
Despite various building works, fantastically interesting and welcoming place. Brilliant uplifting music at Evensong from the Cathedral Singers.

Amazing, historic site full of interesting things. Very Wolf Hall. Connections with Methodism, Brooklyn and Pennsylvania. Alice in Wonderland and Harry Potter are also connected with the College and Cathedral.

J. C.
Great place to visit and see real UK

Definitely part of the tour of Oxford so expect it to be busy. Top tip is to book your tickets online as this is one of the most popular colleges and so expect to see long queues to get tickets

Outstanding architecture, felt liked being dropped into history. Would have given the maximum stars but had a very rude man speak to me

Christ Church Cathedral is the cathedral of the diocese of Oxford, which consists of the counties of Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Berkshire. It is also the chapel of Christ Church at the University of Oxford. This dual role as cathedral and college chapel is unique in the Church of England
