I first went into this beautiful shop in 2018, and though I thought the knitwear was beautiful, I thought a bit over my price range. (Especially since I spend six months of the year in the tropics!). But my friend went back and bought a beautiful sweater. After we left Edinburgh, I kicked myself for a year for not getting one myself! The following year, when I returned to Edinburgh, the first place I went was Bill Baber’s and bought a beautiful sweater! So then COVID hit, no traveling for two years, but I’m coming back in September this year, and straight back for another sweater…or two! Forget all those cheesy souvenirs, fake kilts made in China! This is handmade, quality knitwear you will find no where else. AND… take the time to chat with Bill Baber, who is usually there. Really interesting and fun to talk to. Every time I wear my beautiful sweater, I remember my wonderful visits to Edinburgh, and Bill Baber’s wonderful shop in the Grassmarket. Don’t miss this very special shop.

Found Bill Baber's shop in 2000 whilst exploring the Grass Market and visit occasionally when in Edinburgh. Fabulous individual knitwear, made with the highest quality fabrics. Any alterations are usual done on the spot. Wonderful company.

Years ago, at a conference in Albuquerque, we walked into a men’s clothing store (remember, I said, “years ago“) and saw a Bill Baber sweater. It was pricey, but as someone who’s only public vice is cardigan sweaters, I had to have it. Over the years, I’ve managed to get another. But Baber no longer caters to us guys. But my wife now has a few. If you search the Web, you’ll not find any sweaters like them. They are set apart by their colors, designs, and textures. It’s been a long time since I got that first sweater, but even with the elbow patches it is still the one piece of clothing I have that gathers compliments regularly.

I have not yet been to Edinburgh or the store, but I can’t speak highly enough of their mail order services. I ordered some of their Belle dresses, and they came so quickly, with tracking all the way. Plus, they are just perfect, and gorgeous. Plus, Jack and company were so kind and attentive when I had questions before placing my order. I can’t say enough good things, really, and I anticipate investing in more pieces from the shop. I discovered Bill Baber Knitwear at my local Celtic festival last year. I was immediately drawn to the rich colors, delicate knitting work and traditional Celtic designs on so many of their pieces. I now own a cape and a snood and their newly designed Islay jacket is on my wish list! Every piece is made with care, precision and passion and wearing my Bill Baber Knitwear makes me feel like I am ready to adventure through the highlands! The stunningly innovative collection offers garments made from top quality yarns to a high standard of craftsmanship, all of which have stood the test of time. It is a rare store that excels in artistic beauty as well as natural fibres these days. I have met Bill personally in that store ; he was helpful, polite and showed my friend and I how the knitting machines work. Truly, in a world full of artificial merchandise, this clothing stands out as being exceptional -and it does not harm the environment from start to finish like standard clothing does. I carried Bill Baber's knitwear for years at my shop, Knitworks, located in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Everything is of the highest quality, well-designed and well-priced and utilising the finest natural fibres available. The Babers are a joy to work with, warm and accommodating. THis shop designs AND makes their own gorgous, innovative knitwear from a lovely variety of spcial yarns: silk, linen, cotton, etc. The Celtic designs are especially atractive to me. You can mix/match shells with sweaters and other outerwear.

I first discovered Bill Baber Knitwear during a stroll through the Grassmarket during a holiday to Scotland. I immediately fell in love with the locally designed and made knitwear products. I purchased Pine Wallace which is the perfect weight and material for the Florida climate. When I moved to North Carolina, I mail ordered the Silver Mull cape which is made from Murino wool. Products are totally unique. I always receive compliments when I wear my capes. Super easy to buy on line even from the US. Highly recommend Bill Baber Knitwear!
