Reviews of Primrose Cafe (Clifton - Outside Seating/Roof Garden/Terrace)
T. P.
Nice and friendly staff, very cute location. The food was good, fresh and tasty but nothing extraordinary. Good place to grab a toasty and coffee id say more than brunch. The croque was definitely the best of what we tried, and the chips were also very good!
M. M.
We had an excellent Saturday brunch here. Despite their being a queue we were seated within 5 minutes and were kept up to date with progress.
Their Bloody Mary is one of the best I've had for a long time, really spicy and a fresh celery stick too!
There are a wide range of dietary options available including vegetarian, vegan and gluten free. The food was delicious, fresh, tasty and generous. I would highly recommend the Straw fries, yum!
J. F.
Lush food, friendly staff, cozy atmosphere. Sometimes there's a long queue but it's worth the wait.
Add matcha to your menu and it will be a perfect place! :)
I mean, just look at this breakfast 😍
C. P.
Lovely place, with a large choice of cakes if you want to eat something in the afternoon. The cake was delicious and soft. Not a lot of vegan option for pastries, at least when I want there. However, worth to try!
V. S.
Excellent food and service in the most iconic and secluded corner of Clifton Village. It is both great for an afternoon tea or hearty breakfast/lunch. We had the most incredible lemon poppyseed cake and amazing goat cheese quiche prepared in the premises.

Pandemic or not we have come to our favourite city for a weekend break! It's our 3rd day and a stroll to Clifton after our first choice for breakfast was Bill's ( it was closed ). Walked through this area many times, the cafe operates half inside and half on the street outside. It's vibrant, busy and thankfully a dry and not to cold morning meant we could sit outside. Mainly youngsters...Uni students racking up their debts but a good atmosphere. The full veggy monty breakfast was excellent as were the coffees. It's not cheap at £10.95 each but well cooked, not greasy and delicious. Its such a perfect spot with various shops aligning the street on both sides and a great fillip for overcoming the Covid blues. Clifton village is such a diverse and wonderfully uplifting place.....

We have here a bit of a Bristol institution. The English breakfast is certainly among the best in the city, but there are no shortage of delectable dishes, such as the baked goat's cheese or soup of the day, whatever that may be when you visit. Always expect a cosy and welcoming atmosphere. A lovely spot for a relaxed brunch with good company
G. S. T.
Lovely little cafe offering a wide variety of vegan, veggie and meat meal options. From British brunch classics to Indian inspired vegetarian burgers. With seating across two floors and outdoor heated options, it has a large choice of atmosphere.
The food was tasty with quick service. Lovely place for a brunch or lunch bite.
M. M.
Really great place, cosy and has excellent vegan breakfast options. Would love to come back again!
S. H.
Great food, great coffee really enjoyed it
S. T.
I had a mini monty and it was delicious. The portion was enough for me. Cozy place for brunch :)
R. R.
Lots of tables outside for easy social distancing. Little signs on the tables asking us to email contact for track and trace, shame that was not encouraged by staff. Anyway the cake was delicious and it was friendly and lovely

he Primrose Café has become one of Bristol’s busiest and best-loved cafes. They make almost everything on the premises and take the trouble to source locally and sustainable.
In a perfectly-positioned suntrap, the Primrose is the ideal place to watch the world go by while tucking into breakfast, sampling a lunchtime speciality or savouring a slice of their famous home-made cake.
If you want more privacy, you can tuck yourself away in the secon floor or the private and secluded roof garden.
They are open 7 days a week, serving breakfast till late, morning coffee, lunch and afternoon tea, with a special brunch menu on Sundays.
J. T.
Had breakfast here the last two days, yummy food. Blankets available for the colder mornings. Friendly staff.
L. S.
Great Sunday breakfast kedgeree is as good as it gets...
O. G.
Beautiful cafe and environment. Ordered a delicious cheddar cheese rarebit but it was so small. Didn't realise I'd only receive a single slice of bread! Had to get a sandwich from Nero down the road to make it a full lunch.
Please consider adding another slice to the plate.
S. T.
Good coffee, poor pain au chocolat. New supplier, Hobbs Bakery, for the pastry, they told me. Very cakey & seemed a little stale. Won't be going back there for that type of breakfast but it is a nice place and with the extended outdoor seating you can now eat breakfast in the sunshine...if it is shining that is. Also...30 mins free parking courtesy of Bristol City Council. Finally, there's no shortage of cafes in Bristol, certainly not in Clifton, so you'd think the competition would keep standards high. Primrose has been around for a long time, and does many things well, but it may be a touch of complacency has crept in.
R. C.
A favourite cafe over many years of working in and visiting Bristol. Excellent food and cheery service- seems to maintained its standards and atmosphere despite many other competitors springing up around. Lovely atmosphere and great for people watching- even the odd celebrity or two creeps in from time to time. A Bristol treasure amongst a city of great cafes.
R. T.
Delicious brunch ! We tried the haddock fish cakes , croque señor and mini English breakfast . All were fantastic ! Gets busy on weekends.
P. J.
Great atmosphere and good unusual reasonably priced menu. Had a feeling of being in southern France.
N. B.
The go to place on the edge of Clifton village. Always bustling, friendly and above average cafe food and drinks.
A. L.
Fantastic brunch and quick service. Have always walked past and loved the atmosphere in there. The food was very tasty and reasonably priced.
S. B.
Found this little gem on our way back from a trip away. Cute little cafe, perfect food and the staff were all very nice. Thank you
B. A.
First cafe out of lockdown! Lovely outside seating area. The staff were so friendly and the food is delicious! One of the best cafes in Bristol.
S. M.
Lovely food, very reasonable price. Quick friendly service despite it being very busy.
Will definitely be returning.
T. W.
Excellent breakfast, beautiful produce used. Wouldve got a 5th star if service was just a little more attentive. Other than that all good!!
R. B.
Simple and delicious breakfast. Prompt friendly service. Very busy so get in early!
B. M.
Lovely place for a breakfast or a cake or coffee, but be careful that it can be really busy on the weekends and the wait even for coffee only can be grueling
S. F.
So glad to see staff wearing masks. I have stopped visiting anywhere that does not do this. Contact and trace details recorded too. Food good and came promptly. Even single shot coffee was still quite strong. Seating had been changed to allow more space between tables.
L. M.
My salad was absolutely delicious, and the place was very pleasant though quite busy!
P. M.
Without a doubt, an independent cafe of the highest quality with its own style and atmosphere. Delicious food and drink and helpful, friendly and caring staff. The proprietors take a personal interest in ensuring that your experience at the Primrose is a time to be warmly remembered. A charming and delightful cafe that is rare to find nowadays. My compliments and congratulations to this little cafe with a big heart.
C. A.
Been going here for years, lovely ambiance, friendly service, special to sit outside in the sun in the summer. Food aims high, but sometimes, like today, falls a bit flat. I had the Korean chicken burger and while the flavours were good, the meat was a bit tough.
I. P.
Beautiful place and very tasty! So far I've tried a few items from the menu, all is cooked very well and people serve you with a smile!
The Chocolat on the Belgian waffle does taste a bit cheap, the waffle itself is pretty good.
Q. P.
Lovely location and food
N. K.
Located in a very nice part of Bristol. Parking can be a hassle. We parked further away near the Clifton downs and enjoyed our walk to this cafe. Ample seating space which includes 3 stories and a roof garden. We sat on the ground floor. Good range of brunches and breakfast and waffles! We ordered breakfasts which doubled up as lunch :). My wife ordered a Belgian waffle. The food as expected of good quality and very good. It was a 4 star experience but I have had better coffee, therefore reduced a star.
D. T.
Terrific brunch. Youngest daughter had waffles with bacon and maple syrup £5.95. I had homemade beef hash on sourdough with a fried egg £8.95. Both were excellent with the hash packing a spicy punch. Nice atmosphere and good service too. Loved it.
I. W.
A lovely outdoor breakfast on an interesting shopping street. Staff were brisk and pleasant.
C.
Brunch like a local..... I felt like a Bristolian. great price for the amount of food.
E. P.
One of the best restaurants i have ever visited. I had the vegan full monty. My only slight criticism is i would have preferred my bagel to be more toasted and maybe the tomato should be a skinless plum tomato The mushrooms were an intense flavour which has stayed with me for the rest of the day and the rissoles were great also the hash browns were fantastic. Was all nice and hot the canton tea was excellent. Theres a no smoking garden roof top bit which was brilliant. Got there as early as possible and when we left there were loads of people outside. Its really popular and you can see why. The food is good, the prices are fair and the staff look after and appreciate their customers. I will be going back time and time again.
R. T.
Amazing full Monty. Lovely poached eggs. Hot chocolate and caramel latte was fantastic as well. The queue kept getting longer and longer, but they didn't mess up my order or try to rush anything and end up making it poor quality. Sat outside the cafe and they had heaters and blankets to accomdate as well. Fantastic breakfast place and a great team too, by far my favourite breakfast place in Bristol. Will be back in the future.
a. m.
Such a nice lunch. Sitting in the sun, sipping a cold beer and feeling like you’re on holiday. Perfect hangover cure 🤌
M. G. B.
Nice place, we arrived to Bristol and decided to have a quick lunch here before the check in time on the house.
The staff is nice and friendly, the service was quick and the quality of the food was good.
We been siting on the roof terrace because the weather was nice and the street was full and it is a really good environment.
I am sure I’ll be back if I have the opportunity
J. E.
We ordered food for three and there was so much we couldn't eat it. We had to sit outside which we wanted to anyway as it was a lovely day. It was packed and people were waiting for tables even though there were other food areas to use close by. Dogs were everywhere all so well behaved. Our daughter was in her element. The Veg shop across the road was so clean and busy too called Reg Veg lol.!
A. B.
The loveliest spot for breakfast in Clifton village. One of my favourite in Bristol. Is small but has great breakfast choice and brilliant service all the time. Must go for couples, taking mum or grandma out or a cuppa with your best friend.
P. B.
I live locally to this lovely cafe and it's my go to for brunch...
The menu is biiiiig and varied, and I try to have a different thing each time and have had varying levels of quality. Soupa-toastie: excellent. Bubble and squeak: not that great (I had to put a tonne of salt on to get any flavour and mask the flavour of white pepper 🤮)
Coffee is lovely and I like the chilled demeanor of the staff. Even if the queue is 5 people deep (a little annoying if you're out to lunch to catch up with a mate and then you spend 10mins queuing and ordering) the girl serving (Sunday lunchtime I noticed in particular) was v professional, making perfect coffees and cool calm and collected.
One thing I would say to the cafe is please check your salt and pepper grinders. The ones we had on our table just didn't work at all, and we swapped with another table and they weren't much better. Just a minor inconvenience but as a salt lover I wanted to eat!
See you again soon!
G. P.
Nice quiet place at the entrance of the Clifton Arcade. You can seat outside and eat quietly in a lovely pedestrians-only area. We had one of the daily special salads and one beef burger. Both were greatly made with fresh and tasty combinations of ingredients. Maybe the drinks could have been better, but it's just a detail.
J. R.
Good menu, excellent gluten free selection. Friendly, helpful staff.
J. W.
Beautiful cafe, great location. We had bubble & squeak and the haddock fish cakes, both with excellent poached eggs. The food was good, we've marked it down due to both dishes being heavy in the potato department! Could've been a bit more generous with the squeak and fish ;)
K. R.
Delish food. Always extremely busy which is a shame as it can be tricky to find a seat. But, it's busy for a reason. One tiny negative was that my friend ordered an open sandwich and the bread at the bottom was doused in oil, so much so it left puddles on the plate. My veg burger was lovely though!
B. H.
Great local cafe by Victoria Square in Clifton. Good food and drinks, great outside in nice weather and great for visiting Boyces Avenue arcade with interesting shops and antiques. Friendly service, always popular and by now, pretty much a local treasure.
C. M. T.
Lovely spot. Absolutely delicious food with lovely staff who are happy to help with whatever.
I've also had lots of really good vegetarian and vegan meals here. Excellent cafe
R. M.
Delicious Breakfast! Lovely location in Clifton with a good breakfast menu and dogs are allowed inside! The Veggie breakfast is a big portion with no 'fake meat'. We had a lovely chocolatey coffee too :)
T. C.
Mackerel pate to die for!! And highly recommend the lime and ginger presse.
C. C.
Have visited the Primrose for both lunch and dinner. Both were wonderful experiences. The staff are warm and welcoming and the food is fantastic. I love the goats cheese salad at lunchtime and everyone raved about their meal in the evening. The Primrose has gone from strength to strength and am delighted it is expanding as it is always SO popular.
W. W.
Lovely full English breakfast and friendly staff. Very popular place for a reason!
w. J.
have been going here for years, and have always thought it was very good. However i had a beef burger with chips yesturday. Burger was very nice but the portion of chips it came with was tiny, they came in a tiny little pot, there was no more than 2 mouthfuls, if that. I have never seen such a small portion of chips. I asked the waitress who told me that was just how they came. She did get my another portion (the same size) which helped but you'd have needed 4 or 5 of these pots to get close to a normal portion size.
Now maybe i'm out of touch and no one eats carbs any more but if you're ordering the burger and chips lets face it you want a decent sized meal.
I hope they address this. I'm sure i cant be the only one to have complained. Everything else about the place is great.
A. E.
Good food in a lovely setting, but the staff were rushed and at times terse/rude. Don't even dare to ask to substitute or remove anything from the Monty breakfast, you get ripped a new one. This was all just before the cafe was at full capacity on Sunday brunch, I imagine that they'd be friendlier if they had the time.
Z. O.
Lovely armosphere here. We popped in for Sunday brunch and there was quite a queue to get in before it opened..... testimony to its popularity. Food was served quickly though and it was delicious. We will be back :)
T. F.
I took my partner here for dinner last night, at about 7 pm and was fortunately enough to get a table before it got really busy. Both myself and my partner thought our food was some of the best we've ever had - i've had some great food at all kinds of restaurants but this was probably the best. We also got a bottle of Melbec which was beautiful.
The staff were really friendly and nice, and the atmosphere of the whole cafe/restaurant was slightly posh but not stuffy, I would say relaxed for Clifton village (but still Clifton village - we were sat between two doctors and a group of national newspaper journalists just back from safari in Zambia).
Its quite expensive, but not excessive (£80 for both of us, two courses and a bottle of wine but we both had specials for our main that were extra - you could shave this to £55 without much compromise) and I felt very good value. Can highly recommend.
K. R.
Nice little cafe in Clifton. Great to visit on my return trips to Bristol. Outside heating a plus. Always busy. Food a great range and lovely.
H. C.
Our favourite place for coffee and cakes in Clifton Village - the slices of home made cakes are huge and gooey. Don't arrive too late in the day though or they will be throwing you out to get ready for the evening when they turn into a proper restaurant. Looks small but there is a big upstairs too. We like nosing around the Arcade too for antiques and vintage.
l. M.
Almost a pop up geek to this land mark cafe at cliftons mall. Eclectic menus with the emphasis on healthy the food here always has me wanting more from the menu. Great choice of specials and main stays, blankets and cushions in the winter so you can enjoy the outside. Not just for the cliftonites.
j. j.
Such a cute little place to brunch! Very nice people working there plus the food and drinks are very delicious. Will definitely come back!
C. V. D.
Such a lovely menu and great service. Loads of gluten free options available, often including a cheeky cake! Very busy for lunch so come early or be prepared to wait.. It's usually worth it!
A. M.
My beautiful Rosanna brought us here on a sunny Sunday afternoon. We enjoyed the Croque Monsieur and toasted banana bread which were both served quickly and tasted delicious. Rosanna has excellent taste!
L. P.
Vintage cafe with friendly staff! Delicious & fresh food! Great atmosphere: happy staff, clean tables & airy feeling with large windows! Do recommend (only minutes walk from Clifton Suspension bridge)!
J. T.
Very tasty food, and very helpful and friendly staff.
J.
Probably the best breakfast in Bristol...if you can get a seat. Delicious traditional breakfasts but a slight victim of its own success in that you may yourself waiting for a table. Totally worth said wait though.
R. d. l. O.
Attentive and pleasant. Food very enjoyable.
S. G.
Beautiful little café, lovely in the summer with tables outside and a roof terrace. Great coffee and fabulous cakes; I haven't tried the breakfasts but they look amazing!
R. H.
Attended a 30th birthday dinner. Selection of food was poor even though it was only 7 00 pm also they were already out of lamb!!! Even when the food arrived can't say I was impressed by the dish but I had to make the best of a poor selection! Also we had to go downstairs to find someone so we could pay the bill even though the service charge was included (would like to have been asked before they automatically added this to the bill)?
H. S.
Great staff, best location, brilliant veggie breakfast - one of the best I've had! Would definitely recommend this cafe so thanks all involved!
R. D.
We had breakfast and it was excellent. The place is small and friendly, fairly rustic interior. Clifton Arcade is cute, with this café and a few other shops such as a greengrocer and a couple of stationery shops.
H. P.
Popular venue for breakfast, lunch or just coffee and cake. Always very busy, outside seating in busy intersting location in Clifton Village. Always an employable experience and yummy food.
L. S.
Absolutely great place/venue. Tasty snacks, excellent coffee, pleasant and warm environment
K. L.
Such a lovely venue for outside dining in the sunshine, superb food & friendly staff.
E. S.
Always a favourite brunch spot. Great menu, lovely service and cosy vibe.
J. M.
Alas, this achievement was also its undoing, as at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries, the tower collapsed, taking the crossing, transepts and chancel with it. All that remains of this area are two great crossing arches, and a wall of the south transept. Further disaster came with the Dissolution in 1539, when the Abbey was sold to a local clothier, and given to the townspeople as their parish church, and the other monastery buildings demolished.
D. F.
Very popular cafe in a busy location especially in the Summer.
Service and food quality are great. Breakfast is one of the best in Bristol.
T. J. B.
Great little cafe with great drinks and food options. Very popular. We went on a Saturday lunchtime and struggled to find a table initially.
A. M.
Lovely cafe - staff friendly and helpful (and safe in COVID!), delicious coffee and snacks.
D. K.
Lovely spot for a breakfast or lunch, daily specials. Lots of seating inside and outside in a lovely part of Clifton. Worth a stop by!
I. T.
Excellent, good choice of vegitarian and non-commercial veg dishes. Good surroundings. Service a little slow but that give plenty of time to chat with good friends.
D. T.
Good service and a lovely cup of tea
R. C. N.
Cosy English cafe, very good for weekend brunch or coffee meet up with your friends. Their berry pancake is delightful too!
M. M.
Lovely cakes, ambient and staff! The only maybe small downfall is the setting. Feels a bit cramped and you can listen to all conversations of people sat next to you
P. K.
Fantastic kedgeree
E. W.
The food was lovely and very reasonably priced. Staff were respectful and conscious of the current COVID-19 restrictions.
P. F.
Always popular.....good range of drinks, cakes and snacks. Should find something there for everyone. Usually pretty busy so might have to wait for a table.
B. C.
Consistently great food and fab spot for people watching @ sidewalk tables. However it can get quite crowded so be sure to grab a seat as soon as it becomes available before placing your order.
R. P.
Was recommended by locals and it didn’t disappoint 😉
G. D.
Never disappointed when I come here. Some different and interesting foods. Great bunches and cake. One of my favourite cafes in Bristol.
T. M.
Getting a table in the Primrose Cafe will make your day. Freshly-made, good food delivered quickly with a smile by the indefatigable staff as you rub shoulders with the hip and the trendy of Clifton's burgeoning village life.
T. P.
Really nice food, well presented, good value for money and great location. Quite snail inside but outdoor seating with blankets
G. '. D.
Lovely expressio martinis and staff!
T. Y.
Amazing decor. Such a cosy place to eat and then go for a stroll up to the suspension bridge. It can get quite busy though in here :)
S. M.
Fantastic place to visit, lovely coffee and super friendly service.
I. G.
Great cafe especially for weekend brunch sitting outside. The Mexican eggs were awesome! Good service too.
E. T.
A little gem of village. Nice atmosphere, fresh cakes. The only one suggestion: they don't give you a receipt and sometimes I've payed a different amount for the same dishes
N. K.
Fantastic Quality food in a long-standing Clifton institution. The only downside is it gets so busy and the queue to order and pay snakes awkwardly among the patrons.
I. M.
Slightly hipster but very nice food and friendly staff. Quite snug although does have seating upstairs and outside as well.
F. Q.
This relaxed café supplies lots of homemade organic goodies from breakfast bagels to lunch and even homemade organic ice cream. A few tables escape onto the cobbled pavement when the sun’s out. In the evening, it transforms into a bright yet cosy little bistro with fresh Cornish fish and West country cheeses a speciality.
S. B.
Delicious food with many tasty options that will leave you changing your mind over what to have. Good for brunch
D. B.
A real lovely cafe. The cake was delicious. I have been popping in there for years and always enjoy the food.

M. B.
Worth the wait - lovely atmosphere and yummy sandwiches! Gluten free available too!
I. W.
Amazing local cafe, nice menu all catered for 👌

Good breakfast. On this Sunday morning it was rammed with a combination of young parents and their babies, who clearly hadn't slept much and hip twenty somethings who clearly hadn't slept at all 🙂
E. K.
Good food, reasonable prices, friendly atmosphere. Huevos rancheros recommended. Outdoor seating in good weather
M. d.

Sat and had a hot chocolate and cake whilst watching the world go by. Often full up given its perfect location on an interesting Georgian side street and next to a covered internal parade of antique and artisan shops. Service was quick and friendly.

Good food ,good service ,nice atmosphere

Great service and good quality tasty food in this atmospheric setting. Fast service, however, meant plates weren't hot, so food eaten outside got cold too quickly.

(Translated) Incredibly delicious English breakfast (and more) in a nice atmosphere near the famous Bristol Bridge. There are vegetarian and vegan options. Even in winter you can sit comfortably outside with the blankets provided under a radiant heater. The café is really cozy and highly recommended.

(Translated) The brunches are good. The lively, friendly atmosphere. Cool, trendy shouldn't rule out the level of hygiene that really leaves a lot to be desired
(Original)
Les brunchs sont bons. L'ambiance animée, sympa. Cool, branché ne devrait pas exclure le niveau d'hygiène qui laisse vraiment à désirer
